The Professional Staff Assembly at The University of Alabama is raffling off a Nick Saban autographed football during Family Weekend. All monies collected will go directly to support the Mark G. Foster Scholarship that is given each year to a professional staff member pursuing an academic degree. You can buy your tickets at the Professional Staff Assembly table during check-in on Friday, September 25, from 11:00–6:00 or at the Off-Campus Housing Open House between 3:00–5:00pm that afternoon at Presidential Village. Tickets are $5 each. 8

5th Annual Chocolate Festival
The Chocolate Festival promotes sharing of meaningful information critical to women’s health while fostering engaging relationships throughout the campus and community. In addition to delectable chocolate treats, the festival features a silent auction and musical entertainment. Local chocolatiers and bakers donate special chocolates for participants to sample while learning about women’s health issues. Cost is $8 per ticket. Location: The Rotunda of Shelby Hall

Off-Campus Housing Information
The Off-Campus Housing staff will provide information to assist students and parents in the search for off-campus housing for the coming year. We will have four information sessions that parents can chose from to attend. Times will be 3:00, 3:30, 4:00, & 4:30. Many students will make the choice to live off campus next year. Our staff will be providing information so students and parents can make educated decisions about off-campus living. Location: Conference Room in Student Activity Center at Presidential Village

Lip Sync Hero
Students submitting the most popular videos online to www.lipsynchero.ua.edu will be asked to perform on stage for the live Lip Sync Hero event. The audience will be asked to vote digitally during the performance to help determine the winner. Door prizes will be given out during the evening to members of the audience. Cost is $5 per ticket with part of the proceeds going to a charity benefitting students. Location: Ferguson Center Theater

Gameday 101 Football is one of the most popular sporting events during the fall, and gameday in Tuscaloosa is an experience like no other. Learn all you need to know to make gameday a fun, safe and enjoyable experience at www.uagameday.com. Getting Around Three hours prior to kickoff, the entire core of campus is closed to all vehicle traffic. This allows for increased pedestrian traffic on the Quad, the Strip and to BryantDenny Stadium. These streets remain closed until after post-game traffic clears. However, the Crimson Ride transit system 14
has over 20 buses running gameday routes starting at 7 a.m. and is free for all fans on gameday.
Parking Public parking is available on and off campus. The east side of campus has the most convenient and large amount of parking featuring the ability to prepurchase parking passes the week of the game at www.uagameday.com. On gameday, public parking will also be available for purchase on a first-come, first-served basis on the east side of campus. Fans can then use the Crimson Ride system to travel to the Quad. The bus stop is about 250 yards from the Parent Programs tent at Presidential Park.

2. Free car parking is available at the University Mall. A shuttle will run from this lot to the south end zone of Bryant-Denny Stadium for $10 round-trip per person. Both bus stops are about 0.4 miles from Presidential Park, the location of the Family Weekend tailgate.
Tailgating A big football tradition is tailgating before, during and after the game. This includes the elaborate tent set-ups that go up on the Quad on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings before the game. Families will bring food, drinks and even TVs to their tents. These set-ups are a point of pride to the Tide fans. Come out early to enjoy pregame festivities with the UA family. The Quad activities will end 1–1.5 hours after the game. For more information about the Quad or tailgating rules/regulations, visit www.uagameday.com.
There are also various non-university public parking opportunities off campus that include shuttles to and from the stadium. 1. Free car parking is also available at the Downtown Intermodal Facility (601 23rd Ave.), starting 3 hours prior to game time. The cost to ride the bus (per trip): •

The campus has plenty of Bama Dining options for families on gameday. Store locations are: 1. Ferguson Student Center (Food Court on the 2nd floor) 2. Lakeside Dining (corner of McCorvey Dr. and Hackberry Ln.) 3. Stewart’s Corner at Lloyd Hall (East side of 6th Ave. near the Quad) In need of great tasting and convenient gameday catering? Bama Dining also offers great gameday catering packages. Call Bama Dining at (205) 348-9881 for more information. If that wasn’t enough, the Quad has exclusive vendors along 6th Ave. (east side) with a wide array of food options, such as BBQ, chicken, steak sandwiches, and many more. Also, located just steps away from BryantDenny Stadium and the Quad, the Strip is an area of shops and restaurants that is a popular gameday destination. Whether you want to enjoy delicious food before kickoff or buy Alabama merchandise, you can find it all on the Strip.
Restrooms Shopping and Dining Make sure that you take time during gameday to check out all the great things at the SUPe Store. The SUPe Store has all the latest fan apparel and gameday novelties. There are three separate merchandise stores that will be open with an extensive supply of Bama gameday souvenirs, apparel and books. Store locations are: 1. Ferguson Student Center (on the ground floor) 2. Bryant Museum (inside the museum on Bryant Dr. across from Coleman Coliseum) 3. SUPe Store Tent (on the southeast side of the Quad)

There are restroom trailers on the north, west and east sides of the Quad, as well as portable toilets in areas around the Quad.
Re-entrance into the Stadium By University of Alabama and SEC policy, no re-entrance is allowed once a guest leaves the stadium.
Ticket Policies The Bryant-Denny ticket office opens three hours prior to kickoff. The University of Alabama is not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged tickets. This includes tickets left at home on gameday.

Every individual entering the stadium must have a ticket, regardless of age (including infants). The University of Alabama reserves the right to change the date, opponent, and start time of any game without entitling the ticket holder to a refund.
Lost and Found/Lost Children We encourage you to stop at the Ferguson Student Center Info Desk or the gameday information center in front of Reese Phifer Hall and pick up an ID bracelet for your children. Lost children and lost articles can be picked up at Gate 17.

Elevators The Gate 5 elevator gives easy access to the U2 level on the west side (U1 and U3 levels can be accessed by the spiral walkway from that level). The Gate 37 elevator gives easy access to the U4 level on the east side and north upper (400 level). *A proper ticket is required to use public elevators
Smoking is prohibited in seated and ticketed areas, portals, and aisles of Bryant-Denny. Designated smoking areas are located on the main concourse and other designated areas near suites.
Getting Out of Town Many roads become one-way streets to accommodate traffic after the game. There are four main routes from campus to access the interstate after the game: I-359 Route (quickest route to the interstate) 1. Find your way to University Blvd. or Paul W. Bear Bryant Dr. (whichever is easiest) and proceed west. 2. Continuing west, turn left onto Lurleen B. Wallace Blvd. South (this is a one-way street). 3. Lurleen B. Wallace Blvd. South will become I-359 (no turns, just a lane change). 4. Continue on I-359 and it will lead you to I-20/59. •
I-20/59 north toward Birmingham is to the left.

I-20/59 south toward Meridian is to the right.
Cottondale Route (next quickest route to interstate) 1. Find your way to University Blvd. and proceed east. 2. Continue on University Blvd. (HWY 215 N) beyond the McFarland Blvd. intersection. 3. Continue on University Blvd. East (US HWY 11) to I-20/59.

University of Alabama History and Traditions The University of Alabama, known as “The Capstone” for being the first higher education institution in Alabama, is rich in history and tradition that dates back to before the Crimson Tide got its name. University of Alabama Today The University of Alabama ranked among the top 50 public universities in the nation in U.S. News and World Report’s annual college rankings for more than a decade. UA was ranked 32nd in the 2013 rankings. Last year’s freshman class, with more than 6,800 students, is the largest in school history—bringing total enrollment to more than 36,000 students.

Alabama Traditions The Crimson Tide/Roll Tide When people referred to Alabama’s football team in the 1900s, they simply called it “the varsity” or the “Crimson White” after the school’s colors. Hugh Roberts, a sports editor for the Birmingham Age-Herald, coined the term “Crimson Tide” during the 1907 matchup between Auburn and Alabama. The game, played in a sea of crimson mud, was the last game played between the two rivals until 1948 when the series resumed. Although Auburn was heavily favored to win, Alabama held Auburn to a 6–6 tie. Hugh used the term “Crimson Tide” to describe the great game played by Alabama and the name has followed ever since.

“Roll Tide” was said to illustrate the Alabama varsity team running on the field. It was said the team looked like the tide was rolling in, thus gaining the chant “Roll Tide.”

The Elephant
Originally, the stadium had a capacity of 12,000. Currently Bryant-Denny is one of the largest on-campus football stadiums in the nation and holds more than 101,000 fans.
UA has not always been associated with the elephant. In fact, it was not until 1930 that Alabama and elephants were linked. During that season, Sports Writer Everett Strupper of the Atlanta Journal wrote a story describing the Alabama-Ole Miss football game. He described the Alabama players’ size and power: “At the end of the quarter, the earth started to tremble, there was a distant rumble that continued to grow. Some excited fan in the stands bellowed, ‘Hold your horses, the elephants are coming,’ and out stamped the Alabama varsity. It was the first time that I had seen it, and the size of the entire eleven nearly knocked me cold; men that I had seen play last year looking like they had nearly doubled in size.” From then on, he and other writers continued to refer to Alabama’s linemen as the “Red Elephants,” beginning the long association of UA and the elephant. In 1979, the University saw a need for a mascot. At that time, the cheer coach, Dr. Kathleen Cramer, visited Coach Paul W. Bryant’s office and asked for permission to implement a mascot program. He initially said no, because elephants were known as slower animals. After observing his office, they pointed out the number of elephants he had on display. He had no choice but to agree. The SGA allowed the student body to vote on a name. The three names were “Dixie,” “Tusk,” and “Big Al.” The students chose Big Al, and he made his first appearance at the 1979 Sugar Bowl against Penn State.

Alabama’s first football game was played in 1892 in Birmingham against a team of selected students from Birmingham high schools. Alabama won, 56–0.

Million Dollar Band Made up of more than 400 students, the nationally recognized “Million Dollar Band” is a very prominent part of the Crimson Tide spirit and tradition. The “Million Dollar Band” was named in 1922 after Alabama played Georgia Tech. Alabama football struggled during the year and lost to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 33–7. During the game, an Atlanta sports writer asked W. C. “Champ” Pickens, an Alabama alumnus, “You don’t have much of a team; what do you have?” Pickens responded, “A Million Dollar Band.” 27
Houndstooth At every game and around Tuscaloosa, many Alabama fans dress in houndstoothpatterned attire. Some wonder where this pattern came from and why it has become synonymous with The University of Alabama.

When Alabama fans think of houndstooth, they think of coach Paul W. “Bear” Bryant, who led the Crimson Tide to a record six national championships. Coach Bryant always wore suits and hats on the sideline, but it was not until Sonny Werblin, owner of the New York Jets, gave him his first houndstooth hat in 1964 that the trend began.
The Capstone Creed This statement of values, written by the Student Leadership Council, is the pledge made at convocation by each incoming freshman class at the start of the academic year.

History of The University of Alabama April 18, 1831 – Inaugural ceremonies were held and the University was opened. By May 28, 52 students had enrolled. 1860 – UA became a military school. 1865 – Union troops spared only seven of the buildings on the UA campus, including the President’s Mansion, during the Civil War. 1871 – During the Reconstruction era, a reorganized University opened with 107 students enrolled. 1892 – The University’s first football team assembled – the “Thin Red Line” that later became the “Crimson Tide.” 1893 – The first women students enrolled for the fall semester at the University due to successful lobbying of the UA Board of Trustees by Julia S. Tutwiler. 1894 – The student newspaper, The Crimson White, made its first appearance. 1903 – The Alabama Legislature decreed that the military system of organization at the University be abandoned.

1912 – Dr. George H. Denny became University president; the campus consisted of 652 students and nine principal buildings. His presidency began an era of unprecedented physical and enrollment growth. When he retired in 1936, there were more than 5,000 students and 23 major buildings, which form the central core of the modern campus. 1914–1915 – The University band organized (later to be named the “Million Dollar Band”). 1963 – The first sustained enrollment of African-American students was achieved. 1979 – Big Al made his first official appearance at The Sugar Bowl, where Alabama beat Penn State for the National Championship. 1986 – University Honors Program was established. University’s enrollment reached approximately 19,000. 2011 – University enrollment reached 30,000 students. 2014 – University enrollments reaches 36,000 students.
