I encourage you to take advantage of all of the opportunities and services available at OU. Above all, the source of our greatest pride is our students. I want to thank you again for sending your daughters and sons to be part of our OU family. I feel privileged to work with them not only as president, but also as a faculty member for the past 40 semesters. Being able to interact with our students in the classroom gives me a chance to truly sense their values and assess their abilities. It has only deepened my respect and admiration for them. In partnership with you, we are truly making OU a center of excellence and source of pride for our students and their families.

Greetings from Sooner Parents!
Welcome to the Sooner Family! As returning parents know, and new parents will soon find out, OU is an exceptional place. It is rich in heritage, tradition and educational excellence. The university is fortunate to be led by David L. Boren, whose vision and personal involvement are unparalleled. He sets the standard for the University of Oklahoma as a value-based, student-centered academic institution. 8
As parents, we can continue to support our students by guiding them to reach for their goals. We can encourage them to develop relationships with professors and staff members, and take advantage of the many resources and student opportunities on campus. Creating partnerships through “Sooner Parents” allows us to provide helpful parent resources, scholarships and increased support needed for student services across campus. If you have not already done so, I invite you to join Sooner Parents, OU’s parents association, online at parents.ou.edu and follow us on our new Facebook page. Our primary goal is to keep you informed about important dates, announcements University of Oklahoma
and opportunities for your students on campus. Please feel free to reach out to me or any of our volunteers with questions, comments or concerns regarding your student’s OU experience. Sooner Parents is your association and we are here for you! This year we plan to continue our current Sooner Parents programs: home football game ticket access, local business discounts, numerous $1,000 scholarships, a drawing each semester for a $500 scholarship (just for being a member of Sooner Parents), support for our signature Sooner Parent Mini-Grant program by funding $10,000 of initiatives across campus, monthly e-newsletters and continued support for worthwhile programs such as Sooners Helping Sooners and student emergency funds. There are many areas and programs in which you can participate as your schedule allows. You also will enjoy the opportunity to work with great university professionals who are guiding our students toward a successful future. My husband, Mark, and I have been fortunate to send all three of our children to OU. Laura will be a junior this year, ready to tackle the academic challenges and excitement of the Price College of Business. Recently she met with her major adviser to review course options and to successfully “Graduate Sooner” in four years. Eric and Caitlin have graduated with

jobs.ou.edu for On-Campus Jobs Students can find a wide variety of on-campus work-study and regular jobs at jobs.ou.edu. Students can apply by completing the OU online application 24 hours a day/seven days a week. They also can track their application status and apply to multiple jobs with a single application.
hr.ou.edu/jlp for Off-Campus Jobs
Student Jobs Human Resources helps students find part-time jobs that fit their school schedule. Does your student want to work on campus or in the community? All student job listings are posted online at the following locations:
34
Off-campus jobs are available through the Job Location Program (JLP). This program connects local employers with student workers at hr.ou.edu/jlp. Students can browse job offerings 24 hours a day, seven days a week and can contact the employer directly to apply for a job. An OU job application is not required for off-campus jobs. Students also can subscribe to an RSS feed of newly posted vacancies so they always know what off-campus jobs are currently available.
Work-Study Jobs Students can apply for work-study jobs when they receive a work-study award through the financial aid office. Qualifying for a work-study award is not a guarantee of employment, but many job postings list a hiring preference for students who qualify for work-study funding. Work-study funding is paid as wages throughout the semester. Contact the Office of Financial Aid Services for more information about work study and other forms of financial aid.

Student Health Insurance Coverage: Now Required
Health insurance isn’t just a good idea — it’s a necessity, and it’s the law. A medical emergency, sudden illness or serious accident could end the educational dreams of an uninsured student and cause financial devastation for them and their family. Additionally, starting in 2014, the federal Affordable Care Act requires individuals to have medical insurance. The provisions of the law impose an additional fee on a person’s income taxes for being uninsured. Visit healthcare.gov for more information. Your son or daughter can avoid the uninsured medical insurance penalty by enrolling in the OU Student Health Plan. This university-sponsored plan meets the medical insurance requirements of the
www.universityparent.com/ou
Affordable Care Act and is a cost-effective way for your student to purchase medical coverage during their time at the university. Plan enrollment and coverage periods follow the academic year calendar and premiums can be billed to the student’s university Bursar’s account. To learn more about the student health plan and review the premium rates, go to hr.ou.edu/studenthealth. The OU Student Health Plan covers most routine medical care, lab work, prescription drugs and care for a serious illness, injury, surgery or a hospital stay. Most of your student’s medical needs will be fully covered in the university’s on-campus health care facility. The plan also provides coverage to refer your student to other health care providers when they need care that is not available on-campus.

Campus Safety
The University of Oklahoma is committed to the safety, health and well-being of students, faculty and staff. OU has zero tolerance for violence on campus as well as other inappropriate behaviors, which include but are not limited to, threats, bullying and harassment. University of Oklahoma staff members, from the university police to the landscaping department, are dedicated to creating a safe and secure environment. Landscaping is designed and maintained to minimize concealment and complement campus lighting. Students are encouraged to take advantage of SafeWalk, an oncampus escort service, and the reliable trolley bus system for safer travel after dark. Outdoor emergency blue telephones are located throughout the academic and 36
housing areas. Additionally, the university offers SafeRide, a complimentary taxi transportation service. SafeRide provides a student a ride home any place within the Norman city limits from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday when classes are in session. Police services for the university community are provided by the OU Police Department. Officers with OUPD are state-certified, fully-empowered law enforcement professionals. Officers are on duty 24 hours a day yearround, and response time to emergencies on campus is usually under five minutes. Visiting hours at the residence centers are enforced by the resident advisers and uniformed OUPD community service officers. These community service officers are on duty in the centers all night and patrol the hallways, public spaces and adjacent parking areas. Outside doors and internal security doors are locked by 10 p.m. every night, and visitors must be admitted by residents.

can be obtained by contacting OUPD. Additional information on security and related subjects is available from many offices, including Housing and Food Services and Student Affairs.
Emergency Communication System
Crime statistics for the Norman campus are published annually in the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report, available at most public libraries. OU’s crime rate compares favorably with other demographically similar institutions. Annual statistical reports and campus safety programs are summarized in the Sooner Safety report published each October by OU. Sooner Safety is available on the OU website at ou.edu/oupd/safety.pdf. Individual copies are available year-round to the public and

The University of Oklahoma has an Emergency Communication System that allows the university to contact students, faculty and staff with precautionary information and guidelines for critical campus incidents. ECS automatically transmits messages by multimedia sources to home, office and cell phones via text messaging, email and instant messaging. ECS requires that students, faculty and staff keep their contact information current by regularly checking and updating it at account.ou.edu. Additionally, the University of Oklahoma has a committee of top-level administrators that meets monthly, or on an as-needed basis, to review any concern brought to the committee. This committee assists in maintaining a safe and secure campus environment. Parents can make the university’s efforts more productive by encouraging their students to participate in crime prevention and personal safety programs; mark their property; use available security equipment; and promptly report suspicious persons, vehicles or activity to the university police.

safe. Complete information, as well as a convenient online reporting form, is available at ou.edu/normanbit. The online reporting form is available by selecting “How to Make a Report.”
Be aware. Show you care. The University of Oklahoma’s Behavior Intervention Team (BIT) promotes student, faculty and staff success and campus safety by identifying individuals who demonstrate behaviors that may be early warning signs of possible disruptive or violent behavior and intervening at the earliest possible point. The focus of OU’s Behavior Intervention Team is care and concern for students, faculty members or staff members who may be in distress. Team members coordinate resources and implement a coordinated response with the goal of providing assistance to the individual while mitigating risk in an effort to keep the OU community healthy and

Housing Beyond the Freshman Year
Traditions Square, the university’s premier apartment complex, offers first-class amenities and residence life programs to support students’ academic and intellectual life. Students enjoy a resortstyle pool, basketball and volleyball courts, a luxurious clubhouse and wireless Internet. The apartments are fully furnished, have a full kitchen, offer individual contracts, and include all bills and utilities. Many students prefer the convenience the residence halls offer after their freshman year. Upperclassmen have access to exclusive upperclass communities, the option to select suitemates and others with whom they want to live, and meal plan flexibility.
Studies show that students who live on campus perform better academically and are better adjusted, which is why students are encouraged to continue living on campus beyond their freshman year.
www.universityparent.com/ou
In fall 2017, new Residential Colleges will open to students. Designed as oncampus living and learning communities for upperclassmen, these Residential Colleges — patterned after residential colleges at Oxford, Yale and Cambridge — will build strong communities. The colleges will have their own dining rooms, study areas, seminar rooms, intramural teams, crests and mottos. They also will have faculty fellows with offices in the colleges. The rooms are a mix of suite and semi-suite configurations, and are located in the middle of campus. For more information about all on-campus housing, visit ou.edu/housingandfood.

Parents Campaign – University Development
Parents realize that students learn both inside and outside of the classroom. In fact, for every hour spent in the classroom, OU students spend four hours in informal gatherings, such as studying, meetings, visiting or exercising, all of which contribute to their intellectual and emotional growth.
42
University of Oklahoma
That’s why many OU parents believe it’s important to support these activities through the annual Parents Campaign, conducted through the university development office. Each year, this campaign raises funds to support activities and programs that enrich students’ OU experiences, as well as benefit their lives after college. To participate in the campaign, indicate “Parents Fund” at the “Make a Gift” site, www.ou.edu/givenow. Additionally, you may receive a phone call from an OU student during the annual parent campaign. For additional information about the campaign, please contact Kirk Garton at (405) 325-3701 or kgarton@ou.edu.
Through the Parents Campaign, more than 2,300 parent donors support such programs as: • Camp Crimson • Tutoring • The SafeWalk and SafeRide Program • Campus awards programs • A resource guide for students with disabilities • Leadership education programs • Health and alcohol education programs
