Elevate Excellence with the USI Foundation

12

The USI Foundation accepts and manages gifts from alumni, friends and organizations that benefit diverse and deserving USI students.

In 2013-14, the USI Foundation provided over $1.8 million in scholarships to USI students. These scholarships are made possible by generous donors and allow our students to achieve their academic goals and so much more.

The USI Foundation’s Campaign USI: Elevating Excellence continues. Generous donors have committed $46.7 million to help students and faculty. With a campaign goal of $50 million, Campaign USI: Elevating Excellence aims to build scholarship endowments, broaden student experiential learning and endow faculty professorships, among other components.

Joining the Parents and Families Association is a wonderful way to become involved. You can make a gift any time and your student can contribute to the new Student Fund to begin his or her legacy of support of USI’s students and programs. FERPA:

Access to My Student’s Records The University of Southern Indiana recognizes that parents play an important role in their student’s life, and we want to assist you in your role as coach. We also recognize and act in full compliance with the regulations set in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA), as amended. Knowing this information may be helpful in discussions with your son or daughter to have an understanding of the University of Southern Indiana’s policies. The University expects your son or daughter to take full responsibility for his or her education, including the academic policies in the University of Southern Indiana Bulletin (bulletin.usi.edu), Schedule of Classes www.universityparent.com/usi

and the Student Handbook (usi.edu/deanofstudents/code). Parents will find it helpful to acquaint themselves with the policies and procedures found in these publications, and additional information that can be found at: usi.edu/ registrar/academic-records/privacy.

What is FERPA? FERPA, also known as the Buckley Amendment, is a federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. FERPA applies to all schools that receive funds under an applicable program of the Department of Education.

Can I access my student’s academic records? At the post-secondary level, parents have no inherent right to access or inspect their student’s educational records. The right of access is limited solely to the student.

13

Can I receive my student’s grades? Mid-term grades, final grades, transcripts and other indicators of classroom performance are examples of the confidential information that make up part of a student’s educational record. This information is protected under FERPA; parents do not have access to it unless the student chooses to provide the information. Students can view their semester grades and unofficial transcript online via myUSI, and share their records with a parent if they choose to do so. If an official transcript is needed, the student can submit a transcript request. Parents cannot order a transcript for their student.

Parents may access a student’s education record at USI under the following circumstances: •

The student completes a “Permission to Release Education Record Information” form in the Registrar’s Office. This form entitles a parent or authorized person named by the student to obtain specific information upon written request and proof of identity. The student may rescind this form at any time.

The parent establishes the student’s dependent status by presenting the University with the most recently filed tax return showing the student was claimed as a dependent and also completing the “Request for Confidential Data of a Dependent Child” form in the Registrar’s Office.

I pay the bill for my student. Why can’t I see his/her academic records? It can sometimes be hard to accept the fact that a parent’s choice to pay for their student’s education does not supersede the student’s right of academic privacy. Even when a third party is financing their enrollment, the right of access still remains with the student. However, an open line of communication can help facilitate the exchange of information between parent and student.

How can I receive an Enrollment Verification for my student? There are times when formal verification of a student’s enrollment, GPA or a degree earned is needed (for a student loan deferment, good student insurance discounts, coverage on parents’ insurance, potential employment, etc.). USI participates in the National Student Clearinghouse (studentclearinghouse.org), providing enrollment data that is accessible by various loan companies for the purpose of loan deferments. If an enrollment verification is needed for another purpose, the student must initiate the request and authorize the release of their information.

14

Questions on accessing your student’s information should be directed to the Registrar’s Office at 812-464-1762, 800-467-1965 (#3), or registrar@usi.edu.

University of Southern Indiana

Registration, Payment and Financial Assistance A college education is an investment in your student’s future. USI has departments and resources to help you through the financial and registration processes.

are distributed through your student’s USI email account. A student has the ability to set up authorized payer(s) who are able to view billing statements and make payments to the student’s account. The University sends statements on the 10th of each month with a due date of the 20th of each month.

Office of the Registrar

Student workers pick up their campus paychecks at this office. Students may cash a check here and have items notarized. The Bursar’s Office is located in the lower level of the Orr Center and can be reached at 812-464-1842 or bursar@usi.edu.

The Office of the Registrar is responsible for maintaining the accuracy and integrity of academic records at USI. They coordinate many University services including registration, reporting midterm and final grades, non-attendance, class schedule publication and the degree audit system. Additional services include schedule revisions, release of USI transcripts, enrollment verification (for loan deferment, insurance coverage, etc.), undergraduate readmission, various record-keeping functions (change of address, change of major, etc.), application for graduation and conferral of degrees. Several of these services are available online. For more information, visit usi.edu/registrar.

Bursar’s Office The Bursar’s Office, or Cashier’s Office, at the University of Southern Indiana issues billing statements, accepts payments and issues refunds. Billing statements from USI www.universityparent.com/usi

Student Financial Assistance Student Financial Assistance is committed to supporting the University’s goals of enrolling and graduating a talented and diverse student body. Our studentfocused team works to help students and their families seek, obtain and make the best use of all resources available to help finance the costs of attending the University of Southern Indiana. In partnership with internal, federal, state and other organizations, team members coordinate the administration of all student financial assistance awarded to ensure equity and consistency in the delivery of funds to students.

FINANCIAL AID CHECKLIST 2015–2016 ACADEMIC YEAR Use this checklist as a guide to help you through the financial aid process. If you have questions or need additional information, contact Student Financial Assistance at 812-464-1767 or 800-467-1965. You can find helpful information by visiting usi.edu/finaid. oo Your student should complete the FAFSA online at fafsa.gov. March 10 is the State of Indiana’s deadline for state-funded programs. oo Early February 2015, you will be able to select the IRS Data Retrieval option on your FAFSA. We strongly recommend that parents and students select this option during the initial filing or when subsequent corrections are made to a 2015-2016 FAFSA application. This option streamlines and expedites the processing of your financial aid application. oo Financial aid awards are calculated once your student is admitted and we receive the FAFSA. Financial Aid awards may be viewed via the student’s myUSI. In addition, paper award notices are mailed to new students. oo The Direct Loan, a federal student loan, will be packaged to eligible students upon receipt of the FAFSA. oo Beginning July 1, your student will need to log on to myUSI and accept, decline or reduce the Direct Loan. First time

16

borrowers must electronically sign the Master Promissory Note at usi.edu/finaid/mpn.asp and must complete Direct Loan entrance counseling online at usi.edu/finaid/ entrance.asp. oo If your student has received results from the FAFSA and is interested in applying for federal work study, he/she may complete a Work Study Resume. The Work Study Resume may be obtained at usi.edu/finaid/sfaforms.asp. oo Approximately 30 percent of all financial aid students are selected for verification. Verification involves evaluating the FAFSA for accuracy. Beginning with the 2013-2014 academic year, the Department of Education is moving to customized verification. Verification requirements may vary from student to student. Your student should check myUSI to determine what documents might be required. Verification can take four to six weeks or more to complete depending on the time of year. Student awards will not be finalized until verification is complete. oo Provided the student has completed all requirements, financial aid will be applied to the account balance, which normally takes place by the end of the second week of each semester.

Freshman Year Initiatives The University has several programs designed for new students. These programs support them as they become integrated into USI’s culture and student body, develop the skills and drive necessary to excel in their college courses and recognize their responsibility and potential to achieve great success. Living-Learning Communities At the University of Southern Indiana, first-year students with similar interests, goals and academic programs can be placed on designated floors within the residence halls. These living-learning communities (LLC) help students create a strong link between their lives in the residence hall and learning experiences in the classroom. Students who reside in a LLC enjoy the same amenities as other www.universityparent.com/usi

residents, yet they benefit from a different living experience. Students on the floor work together to develop a community that relates to a common theme. University departments sponsor the floors and assist in organizing programs, activities and events that highlight the major or area of interest. Themes can be selected from these topics: Business, Education, Exploring Majors, Global Community, Honors, English and Theatre Arts, Nursing and Health Professions, Social Justice and STEM.

Special programs and services available to students who select LLCs: •

Academic tutoring and advising

Increased faculty contact

Roommates who share similar majors or interests

Programs and activities available only to LLC residents

Tips for Connecting Your Commuter Student to Campus

Commuter students make up 75 percent of the campus population at the University of Southern Indiana. Oftentimes, commuter students don’t feel as connected to campus as those living in the residence halls or on-campus apartments. Parents who understand the unique challenges of commuter students can help make the college experience better for their student.

20

1

Encourage your student to stay on campus during the day. The more they stay on campus, the more people and places they have the opportunity to see and meet.

2

Advise your student to study on campus. USI has study areas all across campus. Computers, desks, printers and private rooms are available, and your student’s studying won’t have to compete with chores, siblings, pets or other at-home distractions. University of Southern Indiana

3

Promote an on-campus job. Student workers normally work 12 to 15 hours per week, and USI employers respect that school is your student’s Number One priority. Plus, when the University is closed, student workers don’t have to work.

4

Suggest that your student venture back to campus for evening or weekend events and meetings. Activities Programming Board sponsors concerts, movies, karaoke, lectures and dances during these times. Don’t miss out on the fun by staying at home!

5

Encourage involvement. With more than 120 student organizations, it’s easy to find one that fits every student. Your student will feel connected to USI, learn valuable skills, meet other students and faculty and have fun!

6

Be aware of campus news and events. Get to know more about USI. Read the literature that comes from campus, check out the website and sign up for the Parents & Families Association eNews to be in the know about happenings on campus. If you acknowledge the importance of what’s happening at USI, your student will, too.

Counseling Center The Counseling Center’s primary purpose is to provide support and counseling to help students develop the personal awareness and skills necessary to overcome problems, make effective decisions and grow in a manner that will allow them to maximize their total educational experience at the University of Southern Indiana. While some individuals seek counseling during a state of crisis, it is not necessary to have a serious problem to see a counselor. Information shared in counseling is kept private/confidential, separate from academic records and only disclosed to relevant individuals in the rarest of circumstances.

The Center’s services may be billed to insurance, billed to the patient or students may enroll in the Office Visit Plan (OVP). The OVP is required for students living in campus housing and optional for all other students. The OVP is $47 each semester and provides unlimited office visits to the University Health Center including a flu vaccine for no additional fee. All immunizations and pap screens must be paid for in full at time of service. Lab and www.universityparent.com/usi

Counseling is provided under a brief therapy model, and sessions are typically 45 to 50 minutes long, once a week or every other week. If a staff member feels they cannot address a student’s needs because they are beyond the role and/or scope of services available, an appropriate referral will be provided. All services are supported by tuition and student fees, and students do not pay extra to access counseling services. However, students found responsible for certain violations of the Code of Student Behavior may be charged an additional administrative fee for a Substance Abuse Assessment. 25

The Counseling Center celebrates all aspects of diversity and seeks to support the development of a healthy University community for all students. (continued from page 27) Students need to be aware that often assaults happen when alcohol is involved. Someone who has been drinking may not be able to give consent for sexual activity. We encourage students to intervene if they think someone is in an unsafe situation, either by direct action or by letting a University official know immediately. We ask that you encourage your student to program the 24-hour Public Safety emergency number (812-492-7777) in his or her cell phone for easy access during an emergency. Any student who has been assaulted is encouraged to report the assault as soon as possible to USI Public Safety, the Dean of Students Office or to the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office. Reporting may be done anonymously through both Public Safety and the Dean of Students. Confidential reporting is available at the USI Counseling Center and the Albion Fellows Bacon Center, a local community domestic violence and sexual assault agency, which can be reached at 812-424-7273, 24 hours a day. More information can be found at usi.edu/rfw/sap.

Substance Use Many USI students choose not to drink, and most USI students who do drink tend to do so in a reasonable manner. However, some students do engage in high-risk drinking. According to University data, 73.8 percent of USI freshmen report not drinking when hanging out with friends. USI’s policies prohibit alcohol and drugs on campus, and we need parents to be partners in our efforts to keep students safe. All parents should talk to their students about drinking and drug use. Students who choose to drink should do so in a responsible manner. Students are encouraged to eat before and while drinking, go out with trusted friends and make plans to get home safely. Drinking 30

large amounts of alcohol (drinking to get drunk) and being unaware of what one is consuming is considered high-risk behavior. Using prescription drugs in a manner not prescribed, or that does not belong to the individual, is also considered a violation of policy. There are plenty of alcohol-free activities on campus: movies, athletics, student organizations, intramural and club sports, outdoor adventure trips, music and more. Students that are concerned about their use of substances, or about a friend, can talk to someone at the USI Counseling Center 812-464-1867. Parents and students can find additional resources at usi.edu/rfw/aod.

It is essential you encourage your student to take responsibility for their education by meeting regularly with their academic advisor. As parents and family members, USI recognizes that you play an important role in supporting your student through the academic process. Asking questions about how their classes are going, engaging your student on what they find real passion for and supporting your student in the college experience are specific ways you can help your student be successful at USI.

David L. Rice Library Named for USI’s first president, the David L. Rice Library is the go-to spot on campus for students to study, access their online course materials, get items their instructors put on reserve, check out a laptop, iPad, or Galaxy tablet, collaborate with classmates, find a good book to enjoy, recharge their electronic devices or recharge themselves with a nap! •

Using email, chat, text and faceto-face consultations, reference librarians provide in-person and virtual help with finding needed information. They also teach classes on searching, selecting and evaluating that information while avoiding plagiarism.

University Archives and Special Collections have great state, local and University history.

Computers (Macs included!) are on all floors, offering access through the library’s website to the online catalog, databases, helpful research guides and online tutorials.

Study and gathering spaces on all four floors include tables, carrels, comfortable seating, two large quiet study reading rooms, 30 group study rooms and two computer labs.

Students can get connected with the library’s services and resources through social media such as Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and the David L. Rice Library blog.

With a Starbucks store inside the building, students can relax with a beverage and enjoy reading a paperback, or have fun finding a good DVD for the weekend.

Career Counseling Students who are exploring or rethinking their major and career options are encouraged to utilize University Division Advising’s career counseling services. Through interest assessments and other resources, staff members work one-onone with students to help them clarify their interests and skills and identify the major and career options that closely match their goals. Appointments will be tailored to students’ specific needs and concerns. Students can schedule a career counseling appointment by calling University Division Advising at 812-465-1606 or visiting us on the first floor of the Education Center, room 1142.

As parents and family members, USI recognizes that you play an important role in supporting your student through the academic process.

34

Parents can relax too, knowing that the library offers many services to help your student succeed and that she or he can get great advice on term paper research. Check out usi.edu/library to see what we offer your student! University of Southern Indiana

Student Life and Activities The University of Southern Indiana wants your son or daughter to gain the full college experience. We provide many activities and services to help students get connected and involved. Student Development Programs Earning your degree at USI should be your student’s number one goal, but success in college also should include gaining leadership skills by getting involved in campus life. With so many choices, it may be hard to know where to start. The answer is Student Development Programs. The staff helps students make the most of their college experience. Encourage your student to contact them and get involved. They work with student organizations, fraternities and sororities, Activities Programming Board, Welcome Week, leadership programs and new student orientation. Through involvement with these activities, students can build skills in communication, critical thinking, self-confidence, motivation and conflict management. Your student can learn more about these programs at usi.edu/sdv. 40

Student Organizations USI has a variety of student organizations with which your student can get involved. They range from academic and professional organizations to service organizations, special interest and sports clubs. Membership in an organization should reflect personal and academic interests. Multicultural Center

Religious Life

The Multicultural Center provides a range of cultural and social programs that promote awareness and appreciation of diverse cultures. The Center hosts speakers, who, in the past, have ranged from actor/author Hill Harper — widely known for his starring roles on CSI: NY, Spike Lee’s Get on the Bus, and Tyler Perry’s For Colored Girls Only — to Judge Glenda Hatchett, who presides over the syndicated show, “Judge Hatchett,” and is the founder of Parent Power Now, the premier online parenting network.

Religious Life provides religious guidance and worship opportunities for students, faculty and staff. While our primary goal is to encourage students to stay active in the faith life of their choice while at USI, we also house the Spiritual Diversity Project that aims to educate and coordinate a greater understanding of the diverse religions on campus and within the community. Religious Life offers services and information for multiple denominations. Students can take part in retreats, fellowship, bible studies, worship services, spiritual guidance and service opportunities. To find out more, visit usi.edu/religiouslife.

The Multicultural Center supports organizations that encourage academic achievement and personal development of its members. Membership is open to all races, cultures and ethnic backgrounds. •

The Black Student Union sponsors activities on campus such as MLK birthday holiday observance, Black History Month Celebration, performing arts productions and social activities.

The Hispanic Student Union/ Latinos Unidos (HSU/LU) promotes programs that enhance and increase knowledge and appreciation of cultural diversity such as Latino(a) Leadership Conference, Salsa Dance Night and Dia de los Muertos.

The South Asian Union coordinates Indian Culture Night, Global Communities, Diwali Lecture and the International Food Expo.

The American Indian and Indigenous Peoples of the Americas is a new student organization that is in its infancy stages. The University has rallied behind this new organization in support of its vision.

In addition, the Center also helps coordinate College Mentors for Kids, Designed by Grace Gospel Choir and the Executive Diversity Scholars Program. More about these programs can be found at usi.edu/mcc or by calling 812-465-7188. 42

Studentathletes compete in 17 different varsity sports including basketball, cross country/ track, golf, soccer, baseball, softball, tennis and volleyball. Admission to home regular season athletic events is free to USI students. Students also can support the Eagles from the sidelines by joining Red Zone through the Student Government Association. The University of Southern Indiana invites parents and family members to get involved by becoming members of the USI Varsity Club, USI’s athletic booster club. Varsity Club membership money (100 percent) supports athletic scholarships. Season tickets also are available. Find out more by visiting gousieagles.com or call 812-464-1846. Students interested in being involved with Archie (USI’s mascot), USI’s dance team, cheer team or pep band also may visit the Athletic Department website at gousieagles.com for more information.

University of Southern Indiana

Performing Arts USI offers students opportunities to share their talent via the performing arts. While majors and minors take numerous classes in acting, dance, technology and design, any student interested in theatre may audition for productions by the University of Southern Indiana’s Theatre Program. Currently, four main stage shows are produced each academic year. Beginning in 2015, these productions are staged in the brand new $17.5 million Teaching Theatre, located in the heart of campus. During the season, the “Repertory Project” brings members of the Actors Equity Association — the professional union of stage actors and stage managers — to the USI stage. This opportunity allows USI students to work alongside professional actors and with a professional production stage manager on one of the main stage productions. A second performance

space, the Mallette Studio in the Liberal Arts Center, features independent student productions and second season offerings. Learn more at usi.edu/libarts/arts or contact Elliot Wasserman, chair, at wasserma@usi.edu. Students also may choose to be a part of a music group. USI’s sponsored groups include the Chamber Choir, Women’s Choir, Designed by Grace Gospel Choir and Jazz Band. Students audition for inclusion into these groups. Each year, students in these groups present numerous performances to the public, and many students in the USI Chamber Choir take yearly trips to perform abroad. Both Theatre and Music have experienced significant growth in recent years as they have begun a program of facilities expansion and sought to expand scholarship offerings to Performing Arts majors.

Campus Housing Resources USI offers two options for oncampus living arrangements: campus apartments and residence halls. Both are located within walking distance of the academic buildings for an added degree of convenience. •

Campus apartments are available to all students with the exception of students with families. Each apartment comes fully furnished and has a full-sized living room and kitchen. Residence halls are open to freshmen only. The halls are designed as suites that combine the benefits of traditional residence hall living with popular apartment-style housing and include two bedrooms and two baths with a common living area for four students.

Resident Assistants live on site in order to serve as a resource for students, provide programs and activities and assist during crisis situations.

Around-the-clock security regularly patrols campus housing — these officers also are first responders in case of medical emergencies.

Shuttle bus service from the apartments to main campus is provided.

On-site laundry facilities that use either coins or Eagle Bucks on your student’s Eagle Access Card are available.

24-hour emergency maintenance is provided.

Programs and activities are provided only to on-campus residents, such as the Residence Life Intramural League, Student Housing Association Block Party and Residence Life sponsored programs.

Historic New Harmony: Experience, Explore, Create Since 1985, Historic New Harmony, a department in USI’s Division of Outreach and Engagement, has encouraged cultural and educational programs related to New Harmony’s important historic resources. Historic New Harmony is a unified program of USI and the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites.

www.universityparent.com/usi

Opportunities shared by USI faculty, staff, students and New Harmony include research projects and service learning courses, professional and personal development retreats, New Harmony Theatre summer productions and New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art workshops and exhibits. New Harmony started nearly 200 years ago as an experimental utopian community. The Harmonie Society was organized in Bavaria and immigrated to the United States in 1804. During their 100 years in this country, they built three complete towns, including New Harmony. 49

When they moved back east, the Harmonie Society sold the entire town to social reformer Robert Owen of New Lanark, Scotland. Owen believed education should be available to all people, regardless of social status or income, inspiring our public education system today. Along with his partner, William Maclure of the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, Owen attracted leading educators and scientists to New Harmony for their grand experiment in community living. Today, New Harmony is a small town of 900 residents. It offers world-class accommodations and meeting facilities, dining, shopping and entertainment. Located on the Wabash River, natural amenities abound for every interest,

50

including walking trails, bike paths, public gardens and nearby Harmonie State Park. Guided tours of New Harmony’s historic sites begin at the award-winning Atheneum, New Harmony’s visitor center, designed by world-renowned architect Richard Meier. USI nurtures New Harmony as a living laboratory where students and teachers, tourists and scholars and leaders and seekers can come together to experience, explore and create.
