EKU is committed to excellence and to academic and personal growth of every student, thus we strive to provide students with an enriched educational experience.

Faculty and staff at EKU are committed to providing a challenging academic experience in the classroom. We also believe that a supportive learning environment outside the classroom will enhance student success by helping students to develop attitudes, abilities, and skills necessary to compete in a global environment. Great journeys begin at EKU. Come Here. Go Anywhere.

Sincerely, Elizabeth Rehm Wachtel, Ph.D. Interim Vice President for Student Success

UNIVERSITY HISTORY The Kentucky General Assembly of 1906 enacted legislation establishing the Eastern Kentucky State Normal School. Governor J.C. Beckham signed the bill into law on March 21, 1906. On May 7 of that year, the Normal School Commission selected the campus of the old Central University, founded in 1874 in Richmond, as the site of the new school. On June 2, 1906, Ruric Nevel Roark was chosen president of the Normal School and teacher training began. In 1922, Eastern became a four-year institution known as the Eastern Kentucky State Normal School and Teachers College. The first degrees were awarded by this institution in 1925. In 1928, the College was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. In 1930, the General Assembly renamed the school the Eastern Kentucky State Teachers College. In 1935, a graduate program was approved at Eastern, leading to the Master of Arts degree in Education. In 1948, the General Assembly removed the word

“Teachers” from the name of the College and granted the College the right to award nonprofessional degrees. The most significant day since its founding came for Eastern on February 26, 1966, when Governor Edward T. Breathitt signed into law a bill renaming the institution Eastern Kentucky University and sanctioning the awarding of graduate degrees in academic fields other than education. The University today serves thousands of Kentuckians, hundreds of students throughout the United States and many

international students. The curriculum leads to associate degrees, baccalaureate degrees, and an expanding graduate program that currently offers degrees at the master’s level in many other fields, as well as various fifth-and sixthyear leadership programs in education, psychology, and technology. Eastern also offers three doctoral degrees: in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, in Nursing Practice and in Occupational Therapy. The programs offered enable Eastern to serve the Commonwealth and beyond as a leading regional comprehensive university.

This guide was designed to answer common questions, educate parents and families on campus services, and provide information about EKU events and activities. Whitlock Building Room 571 (859) 622-1303 www.counseling.eku.edu

Powell Student Center Room 110 (859) 622-4373 www.culturalcenter.eku.edu/

The Counseling Center provides services designed to enhance the emotional, social, and intellectual development of EKU students. The Counseling Center mission is to assist students in successfully achieving their academic and personal goals. Services include personal counseling, career counseling, substance abuse counseling, a Career Counseling Seminar (GCS 199, career decision-making course), and group counseling (anxiety, men’s group, general therapy group, non-traditional student group, adult children of alcoholics group, mindfulness group). The counselor/student relationship is confidential as delineated by the American Psychological Association and Kentucky State Law.

The EKU Cultural Center brings issues of cultural diversity to the foreground of campus conversation through educational programs and services. The Center exists to serve all students as they question personal and collective notions of race, ethnicity, sexuality, ability, and culture.

Students desiring personal or career counseling can drop by the center. Parents who wish to refer a student or have questions regarding services can call and speak with one of the counselors. Students who have graduated from high school and are currently enrolled at EKU during the time they are seeking counseling are eligible for services. In cases where the student’s needs are beyond the role and scope of the center, referral information will be provided so that the student may pursue services elsewhere. Since the services provided by the Counseling Center are short-term in nature, referrals to outside agencies will be provided if longer-term therapy is indicated.

Eastern Kentucky University

The Center is engaged in collaborative efforts with other departments and academic areas on campus, provides co-curricular learning experiences, and encourages tolerance, inclusiveness, and the understanding and respecting of cultural differences. The center promotes life-long learning and global citizenship by providing programs, workshops, trainings, study groups, panel discussions, and events on cultural awareness, sensitivity, and competence.

Academic Advising Whitlock Building Room 347 (859) 622-2276 www.advising.eku.edu Once accepted to EKU, each student is assigned an academic advisor. Students who have not yet declared an academic major will be assigned a staff advisor in the University Advising Office. Students who enter with a declared major will be assigned an advisor within their program

or college advising center. Students may talk with their advisor regarding any issues relating to student success throughout the semester. Students will also schedule to meet with their advisor during the advising and registration period to create a semester-by-semester graduation plan.

EKU Office of Financial Assistance Whitlock Building Room 251 (859) 622-2361 www.finaid.eku.edu Go to www.studentaid.ed.gov to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), or contact the EKU Office of Financial Assistance. Parking Mattox Hall Suite A (859) 622-PARK (7275) www.parking.eku.edu Students bringing vehicles to campus must understand the Vehicle Parking Regulations and the different parking options available. Parking permits are required to park in all campus parking areas. If students have a change in their vehicle or the license plate number, they need to email parking@eku.edu with the new information and their EKU ID number. Specific parking areas are designated for employees, commuting students, or students living in the residence halls. Signs located at the entrance of parking lots and streets where parking is allowed designate all parking areas. The parking zones are also shown on the map located on the inside of the University’s Parking Rules and Regulations brochure. There is a fee for parking permits. Students may register their vehicles online through the Bosscars link in EKU Direct. Visitor permits are available at the Parking and Transportation Office. After hours visitor permits may be obtained from the Division of Public Safety located in Mattox Hall. There is no charge for temporary permits.

Police Mattox Hall (859) 622-1111 www.police.eku.edu The EKU Police Department provides around-the-clock full-service police protection to all campus buildings, parking lots, residence halls, and grounds. It has concurrent jurisdiction on streets adjacent to the campus. Sworn officers patrol and answer calls for service in cruisers, on bicycle, on motorcycle and on foot. In

6

emergencies, police can be contacted at 911. There are numerous call boxes strategically located around the campus, which ring directly into the police dispatch center. The department is committed to maintaining a safe campus, and an environment that is conducive to academic pursuits, for the University’s students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

Health Services Rowlett Building Room 103 (859) 622-1761 www.healthservices.eku.edu Student Health Services (SHS) offers the following services for all eligible EKU students: acute ambulatory primary medical care, clinic laboratory services, allergy shots, minor emergency care, mental health services, TB and BP screening, health education (pamphlets, consultation with health care provider, etc.), immunizations (Tdap [Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis], MMR [measles, mumps, rubella], Varicella, and Hepatitis B). Due to lack of demand, Flu shots, the Meningitis vaccine, and Gardasil (HPV vaccine) are no longer available at SHS. These are, however, highly recommended; the Meningitis vaccine is especially advised for all first-year students living in the residence halls. It can be obtained through one’s local health department or primary care doctor’s office and should be covered by most insurance plans. Immunizations and TB skin tests have a charge associated with them, which the student must prepay (at Student Accounts, Room 210, in the Whitlock Building, or via credit card at SHS); all other services provided to students on premises are free. Charges for services obtained outside the SHS (ER/ UTC visits, specialist consultation, X-rays / MRI’s / CT scans) will be billed to the student or his/her insurance plan by the service provider. These costs can be quite substantial. Health insurance coverage, therefore, is highly encouraged. Students not currently covered by any other health insurance plan should explore policies offered by Academic Health Plans, which is the current Student Health Insurance provider for EKU; details of the plan can be obtained at www.ahpcare.com/eku. REMINDER: Eligibility for services at SHS ends once an individual ceases to be a student; thus, upon withdrawal from school, dismissal for any reason, or upon graduation, a person can no longer be seen at SHS and must find an outside health

Eastern Kentucky University

care provider to continue his/her medical care. SHS staff will be happy to assist with locating a health care provider in the community and with transfer of medical records to the provider of choice. SHS is designed to provide acute ambulatory medical care; the SHS cannot manage chronic medical conditions requiring regular visits, close follow-up, and provider availability 24/7. For individuals with such conditions (e.g. diabetes, asthma, high blood pressure, inflammatory bowel disease, etc.) the SHS recommends an appropriate specialist in town who can provide the needed close supervision and medical management. The SHS can address any acute situations related to these chronic conditions, e.g. asthma flare-up due to acute respiratory illness or allergies, but students must rely on their local health care providers for routine management of their chronic conditions. In order to minimize the wait time in the lobby to see a provider, all patients are seen by appointment only. Exceptions include true emergencies, which are worked in immediately. Appointments can be easily made online from any computer with internet access; the Appointment Scheduler is accessible through the SHS website, www.healthservices.eku.edu. For any problems encountered, please call (859) 622-1761, and select “1” to reach the front desk.

Office of the Registrar Whitlock Building Room 239 (859) 622-3876 www.registrar.eku.edu/ferpa Powell Student Center Room 128 (859) 622-3855 www.studentlife.eku.edu Student Life is the home for involvement and leadership for EKU students. Our mission is to enhance the quality of life of students by supporting the University’s commitment to the academic success and holistic development of each student. We foster intellectual, physical, and social development through programs and services which challenge and support students as they develop skills for life-long learning. We are dedicated to providing a wide range of opportunities, activities, and events designed to enhance the EKU experience! Student Life consists of Community Service, Fraternity & Sorority Life, Leadership, Registered Student Organizations (RSO’s), and Student Activities. Each of these entities offers programming and involvement opportunities for Eastern students.

Community Service Community service extends learning and development opportunities outside of the traditional classroom setting. Student Life works to promote a culture of service at EKU to enhance student learning and personal development through participation in monthly days of service and our Alternative Break programs. Students can learn valuable life skills, explore career interests, and make new friends.

Fraternity & Sorority Life Fraternities and sororities consist of individuals bound together by common values, interests, and purposes. Each

fraternity and sorority encourages individual development by setting high ideals in scholarship, leadership, service to others, and social maturity. Membership can offer your student the opportunity to get the most from his or her collegiate experience in an atmosphere of brotherhood and sisterhood.

Leadership Development Our co-curricular leadership programs focus on helping EKU students cultivate skills that will bolster their collegiate experience as well as help them be better prepared for successfully leading in life after graduation. We offer a variety of Leadership Development programs, including workshops and the Emerging Leader’s program, which is specifically for first-year EKU students.

Registered Student Organizations (RSO’s) EKU offers more than 230 organizations. RSO’s categories are: departmental, governance, religious, honorary, residence hall, service, sports, social fraternities, social sororities, and activity organizations. If your student has a special hobby or interest, EKU will most likely have an organization to meet his or her needs. If not, students can create their own!

Student Activities Student Life hosts dozens of events each semester aimed at educating, entertaining, and meeting the needs of our students. Various guests include comedians, singer/ songwriters, and illusionists that are free for students to attend. Many programs in which we collaborate with various departments across campus enhance the out-of-classroom experience.

www.universityparent.com/eky

The most efficient method for parents or legal guardians to track their student’s academic progress is through the central data resource called “EKU Direct.” EKUDirect is an online secure access student self-service data depot. The student can securely log in to retrieve and view official grade reports, unofficial academic transcripts, his or her degree audit (roadmap to graduation), financial aid award information, official enrollment verification for health insurance and other needs, tuition bill, and other information that comprises the student’s educational record. The Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) is a federal law that protects the privacy of educational records, and it addresses the maintenance, inspection, and release of student records. FERPA dictates that information in a student’s record may not be released by a university without the student’s written permission regardless of the age of the student. Students are not allowed to share their EKUDirect password with anyone. EKU has a “WEB-4Parent” portal to help keep parents informed and engaged in their student’s academic progress. The Registrar’s Office assists students with establishing WEB-4-Parent accounts. This FERPA compliant process is a way for students to provide parents convenient access to important information.

7

Make sure your student knows that while change is exciting, it can also be quite stressful. Whether your student is a first-time freshman, a transfer student or living off campus for the first time, acknowledge the impact of this change in his or her life.

1 2

Talk with your students about how often you will communicate with them. Talk about visits home or family visits to campus.

3

Reassure your student that initial adjustments are common and expected for the first year, as well as for continuing students.

Learning to deal with their new freedom and independence is one of the biggest adjustments for students during their first year. Remind them often to make good choices. Be sure to let them know that you are proud of their decision to continue their education.

4

8

EKU offers many free tutoring services in a variety of academic areas for students. Encourage your student to find out more about our tutoring services by visiting www.tutoring.eku.edu.

5 6

Classes may be canceled or delayed due to inclement weather. For cancellation or delay information, you can call (859) 622-2239.

Is the academic pressure from midterms and finals getting your student down? Encourage him to seek counseling or help from instructors early. For test anxiety tips see counseling.eku.edu.

7

Advise your student to start thinking about co-op and summer internship opportunities. For more information, visit www.career-coop.eku.edu.

8

Eastern Kentucky University

Encourage your student to see an academic advisor early and schedule classes at the earliest possible date for the next semester. This will provide the best class selection option.

9

Moving back home at the end of the semester can be a trying experience. Students may be worried about how the family will react to grades and their newfound independence. Keeping this in mind may help everyone adjust to being back together.

Q

How can I access my student’s grades, academic standing, tuition, and fees status?

A

The disclosure of student records is governed by the Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA), which allows records to be released once permission is given from the student. For more information on privacy and access to student records, please look at the FERPA information on the Registrar’s web page: www.registrar.colostate.edu. Students can access many parts of their education records and conduct secure transactions with the University through their RAMweb accounts at www.ramweb.colostate.edu. Students can also grant access to end of term grades, unofficial transcripts, e-Billing, and class schedules to trusted individuals via FAMweb: parentsandfamily.colostate.edu/famweb.

Q

How does my student set up an e-mail account?

A

All Colorado State University students, faculty, and staff are given a free e-mail account on one of Academic Computing & Network Service’s (ACNS’s) central servers with the creation of an eID. Visit the eID web site www.eid.colostate.edu to create an eID.

Q

How can my student find information about jobs on campus?

A

Students can find job listings online at RAMweb. Students go to www.ramweb.colostate.edu and log in using their eID, then select the Job Listing link. Students have also shared they learn about jobs through word of mouth, fliers, and independent office/department advertising.

Q

Does my student need a parking permit?

A

Yes! All vehicles parked on campus require a Colorado State University parking permit. Annual and daily parking permits are available for purchase at Parking Services in the Lake Street Parking Garage. Permit prices can be found online at www.parking.colostate.edu. Students should also register bicycles for only $10 in Green Hall.

Eastern Kentucky University

Q

How do I receive my student’s CSU bill and when is the payment for tuition, housing, and other charges due?

A

CSU uses e-Billing to notify students, parents, and families of the amount due for tuition, University housing, and other charges. The payment due dates are: September 10 for the fall semester and February 10 for the spring semester. Learn more at www.sfs.colostate.edu.

Q

My student has a hold that prevents them from registering for classes. Why?

A

The University utilizes holds to stop registration and other transactions when the student fails to fulfill some obligation. While there are multiple reasons for holds, most holds reflect past due accounts or disciplinary actions. The reason behind a hold is provided to the student when they log on to RAMweb. The University can only discuss a student’s educational record (including holds) with parents or family members if the student has provided consent or the parents have established the right to access. Students who wish to discuss a financial hold are encouraged to contact Student Financial Services, either in Centennial Hall or via phone at (970) 491-6321. Students can also discuss academic holds with their academic advisor or faculty member.

Q

Where can we find information on scholarships and/or financial aid?

A

The CSU Scholarship Application becomes available on students’ RAMweb accounts beginning December 1. The deadline for submission is March 1 at 11 p.m. (MST). To be considered for need-based scholarships through the CSUSA, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must be submitted no later than March 1. The FAFSA is the federal government’s application to determine financial aid eligibility for most types of financial aid. Learn more about the FAFSA and CSUSA on the Student Financial Services website: www.sfs.colostate.edu.
