Students show their appreciation for another record-setting scholarship benefit. The 2005 Black Tie Blue Jeans netted $200,000; BTBJ 2006 netted $250,000; and this year’s gala event raised $400,000, a 60 percent increase over the previous year. Note, this year’s BTBJ sponsors, contributors and volunteers will appear in the 2007-2008 annual report, which covers the fiscal year ending June 30, 2008.

One stands out for supporting our students.

You can see a lot of license plates on campus and around town, but that license plate in the lower right of the photo is special. Rocky Mountain College extends sincere thanks to our alumni and friends who support student scholarships through the State of Montana license plate program!

Due to a change in software at the license plate bureau, we have been unable to obtain the names of our license plate donors or to personally acknowledge them during the 20062007 fiscal year.

We hope the State of Montana will be able to resume providing the College with our donor information for 2007-2008.

Meanwhile, if an RMC plate rides your car, we thank you!

ll the natural seasons come to us at Rocky Mountain College with unique beauty, accentuated by the loveliness of our campus. Spring comes and the new grass rolls like a long green robe down to Poly Drive. In autumn, the gold doubloons of aspens glow in the crisp air. Winter brings a silent sermon of snow-neatened walkways. With summer, the vibrant palette of roses is revealed.

And yet, in the sequence of the natural seasons, Rocky Mountain College also enjoys other seasons. There is the season of learning. There is no clock to it. It is a constant season. Students hover over texts into the wee hours. As students have done since the beginning of learning, they have all-night dialogues solving the world’s problems.

Mornings find campus buildings alight with activity, beginning with the clatter of breakfast-goers to Bair. Early morning classes sparkle with creative energy. Nights find robust participation in athletic events, theatre, and musical performances.

Always, at the heart of this campus is the resource that we covet over any other, our students. Their curiosity and intellect is limitless. Nurturing an endless learning season is our challenge and mission. All of you listed in this annual report are essential contributors to that constant season. Your donations ensure this constant season is neither disrupted nor reduced.

Another season we appreciate is a constant season of generosity. The support of our alumni and friends was recognized this past year by Charity Navigator, the largest evaluator of charities in the United States. For the third consecutive year, Rocky Mountain College received the highest four-star rating for the level of support it receives, and the fiscal responsibility it exercises in using those precious dollars. When you believe in something, you support it. We’re fortunate you believe in this College.

The third season we enjoy is a season of sharing. Rocky Mountain College reaches out to the community with a variety of good works. We offer music and theatre, summer camps and conferences. The campus embraces its guests as they use our Fortin Education Center, attend our concerts, and participate in events ranging from the annul Festival of Cultures to the Symposium on Religion and Culture. Our graduates go out into the world, sharing their talents in healing and educating, in business and in other professional fields.

The fourth season that is constant here is our season of gratitude. I cannot shake the hand of everyone who has helped improve the College’s finances, which is why we publish this report. At the very least, in print, we can recognize all of you who have helped us. Our gratitude is as inexhaustible as your generosity.

et me share highlights from this past year. I can report today the College has never been healthier. ! We have a budget surplus. That may surprise most of you who recall not too long ago that we weren’t even sure we could balance a budget. ! We also have a balanced budget, for the second consecutive year. That was one of our primary goals when I was asked to be president, and the board, administration, staff, and faculty all worked very hard to get there and stay there. ! The Northwest Commission of Colleges and Universities reaffirmed our accreditation. ! Our annual scholarship benefit, Black Tie Blue Jeans, set phenomenal new records, two years in a row, going to $200,000 in 2005, and then, $250,000 last year. This year those records toppled as the event reached $400,000, a 60 percent increase. ! We won a $2 million Title III grant from the U.S. Department of Education, which will help tremendously with our student recruitment and retention, and with our replacement of old computer systems with new technology. ! We were awarded a Getty Foundation grant which will help with our campus wide assessment of our historic buildings, and which already helped us find a donor willing to pay for a new roof for Technology Hall. ! We have completed a makeover of Fortin Education Center, which is widely used by the community.

One facet of that renovation, the Klindt Athletic Hall of Fame Conference Room, gave us the opportunity to celebrate Clara Klindt’s 100th birthday as we dedicated Klindt Corner in her husband, Herb’s, honor. ! U.S. News & World Report once again ranked us in the top 10 of best baccalaureate colleges in the West. We ranked first out of 320 colleges in the alumni support category. A second important part of that rating is for our ethnic diversity. We have a strong American Indian Studies program that is partially responsible for this high ranking. And we have students from foreign countries, who add to our diversity. ! We have made great strides with our physician assistant program, which involved some difficult decisions and diligent effort. The result is demonstrated by the fact that our program rose from 15th from the bottom of more than 130 schools, to 11th from the top.

! It was a difficult time during the previous administration when the elimination of the chaplain position was just one of several controversial decisions made to trim staff to save money. When I became president I made a vow to find a way to have a full time campus chaplain as soon as I could. I am happy to announce that the College now has that position filled with the acceptance of the job by Chris Cormack. We welcome Chris and his wife, Amanda, who come to RMC from The Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California, where they completed their seminary studies. This is an exciting new development that goes hand-in-hand with our new Lillis Chapel and Religious Life Center in the garden level of the Bair Family Student Center. This new facility was made possible by a $200,000 gift from the Bert Lillis Estate. I believe one of the great strengths of this College is its spiritual life. It is one of our core values, expressed in our mission statement: “As an independent college founded in the Christian tradition, we seek to understand that tradition in an open and nonsectarian way. We uphold the importance of one's own beliefs with respect for and fair consideration of others’ beliefs.” ! With all these benchmarks, one of my personal favorites, with my background in business, is from an organization called Charity Navigator, which is the largest evaluator of charities in the country. Remarkably, this year, for the third consecutive year, we got the highest rating they give: Four Stars. That rating indicates we are as fiscally responsible as you can get. When we are given a dollar, it goes where it should, to educating a young person. We are thrifty. That award and what it means will be more and more a part of our core message: When you give to Rocky, you know it will be money well spent. ! In the area of athletics, we welcome a new sport, cross country, coached

by Alan King, who was named Male Athlete of the Year in the 2007 Big Sky State Games. We herald a collegiate national championship in men's skiing. Our campus is home to Rachel Warren, who captured the Montana State Women's Golf Championship. Our women's volleyball team, under our new Hall of Fame coach, Laurie Kelly, succeeded in earning a berth at Regionals.

As a college president, I acknowledge I am more familiar with business than academe. That is not really so unusual. Of the 60 plus new college presidents named last year, less than 10 percent came from academe. That’s because, as much as a college is measured by educational output and faculty productivity, it is also measured as an economic enterprise.

With that basic premise in mind, in the coming months, we will be directing our attention more and more to lessons we’ve learned: ! We’ve learned that we have to invest more resources in faculty development and retention as well as persistence initiatives. ! We’ve learned that we have to upgrade our science building and put more emphasis into the sciences and math. ! We’’ve learned that we have to create new brand awareness at Rocky Mountain College and we are doing that.

! If you take the 5,096 Montana high school students who went on to college this year from the 10,823 Montana high school graduates of the class of 2007 and equally divided that number by the state’s 28 institutions of higher learning, you would find that each of us would get 182 students. So, we’ve come to accept as fact that we need to be a tuition-driven institution recruiting farther from home than we have in the past. ! We’ve learned that the average cost of recruiting a student today is $2,819.00 and successful recruiting starts at the 9th grade level. ! We’ve learned that 83 percent of all juniors and seniors in high school prefer to be recruited via the Internet or a text message to their cell phone. Without an impressive Web presence you won’t attract inquiries. ! We’ve learned that only 8 percent of students who inquire to a college today actually enroll, and that 90 percent of all college students who inquire have seven choices before they make their final enrollment decision.

So, we face challenges. But, we are already tackling those issues. ! We will have that more impressive Web presence

by January. ! We’ve learned that we have to be better at marketing, sales and financial awarding. We are doing that now. ! In order to meet our goal of 300 new freshmen each year, we will send out nearly 30,000 promotional pieces of collateral material and text messages in order to

We’ve learned from our research that although the College is rooted in the liberal arts, it is no longer a liberal arts college. We have become a school of professional studies; our graduates enter the job market, or the best graduate schools, medical schools and law schools that money can buy. We have an astounding 99 percent placement rate. ! Our model for education mirrors that of the Associated New American College (ANAC) model. As more and more of our students come from out of state, they and their parents see our faculty as one of the best in the nation and our education as a very good value for the money. I’m often asked what makes RMC’s brand of the liberal arts, science and professional schools relevant and attractive to today’s career- focused students and families. My answer is that one-dimensional talent won’t take you very far in the 21st century. We offer students a much more complete package. We develop exceptional graduates who have the competence to become organizational leaders, self-assured and adept. They are prepared, no matter what their major, with the versatile experience to thrive in a world that changes at a mind-bending rate. It is this kind of education that guides our graduates through seasons of challenges.

Change challenges traditions. We have constant seasons to see us through those changes, preserving the best of our heritage and enabling us to adapt to the changes.
