RMC President Michael Mace has focused on two major efforts for the coming years: Growing enrollment and growing the endowment. Both efforts have been well served by the Morledge family support.

T

he dedication this month of Morledge – Kimball Hall has been an invigorating process.

With the staunch support of the Morledge family, we will see it bustling with energy this fall.

Faculty will be in new offices.

Students will attend new classrooms.

Conference rooms will find seminars and meetings conducted.

There are places to sit and relax, to converse, and to read and study.

It is the realization of what Dr. Charles and Patricia Morledge dreamed of accomplishing with one of the campus’s most notable aged buildings for many years.

Renovation and new construction occurred during a time when financial stresses nationwide halted many construction projects, but Rocky Mountain College could point with pride to the progress on its campus.

When I think of the Morledges I recall so many wonderful stories. Brad Nason, our vice president and dean of student life, recounts the establishment of a fund the Morledges created for nonacademic purposes.

One time some of the money was used to fly a student, whose family had no money, to New Jersey so he could attend his father’s memorial service.

only be treated for leukemia in Portland, Ore. He had a car, but the tires were bald. They bought him new tires. Another student needed to be home with her disabled mom, who was facing surgery. The Morledges made sure she had a ticket to fly home.

Jim Baken, one of our two fine arts professors, tells of the Morledge’s consideration for faculty. The annual scholarship

benefit, Black Tie Blue Jeans, was not something a young faculty member like Jim could afford to attend.

“But Charlie and Patti would invite faculty to join their table,” Jim said. “I remember Charlie called and asked my wife and me to be their guests and we were delighted we would get to go,” he said.

The next day Charlie called again. “He wanted to tell me to be sure and go to this place to get my tuxedo,” Jim said. “He even took care of that because he probably knew there was no way I could afford that either.”

Shari VanDelinder, our executive director of development, was amazed at the keen interest and attention to detail the Morledges shared when reviewing designs for new signs, another project they helped fund. The same kind of interest was there when Patti participated in the renovation of Kimball Hall, and the construction of the new annex.

“Patti wanted to make sure as much of the building that could be preserved was,” Shari said. “She pored over the plans and discussed everything from door knobs to molding with the architects.”

Dan Burkhart recalls how he was walking across campus one day, a relatively new employee, when Charlie helloed from a distance.

He wanted to introduce Dan, who was the news and information director, to Delmar Jones, one of our board members. “You two are Buckeyes,” Charlie said, referring to their Ohio connection.

“Here I was impressed meeting Delmar because he had been such a phenomenal athlete, but I was also so impressed that Charlie remembered where I was from,” Dan said.

There are hundreds of those kinds of stories, all which would make Charlie, if he were still alive, shyly nod his head with embarrassment.

Patti also dislikes the limelight. They always did what they did to make Rocky a better place because they loved this place and what happened here. They loved fellowship and learning.

I sometimes walk across the campus early in the morning before people arrive to work. I admire the long sweeping walkways, not just boring sidewalks, but pavement art, with red brick ovals sweeping alongside the gray cement, (PLEASE CONTINUE, PAGE 4)

(CONTINUED FROM PAGE 3) and with curving flower beds accenting the path. There are other walkers, sometimes with dogs, their paws flicking up dew from the long green robes of grass. The ivy on Losekamp stirs in a warm breeze. The sculptures cast long shadows beneath sweet smelling linden trees.

I think of just how much all of this has been made better for everyone by the Morledge family's devotion and generosity. I wonder if we have done enough to thank them. Sure, we've named the walkway for them. Yes, Kimball Hall will be renamed Morledge - Kimball Hall. But they have honored us in so many ways. They were the first to agree to be honorary chairs for Black Tie Blue Jeans.

They agreed to serve on the RMC Board of Trustees. Naming a walkway and a building for them is really a small thing to do. Did we thank Patti enough when she shows up to decorate the Great Hall? I still see her petite person dwarfed by the large decorations needed for such a majestic hall. Did we thank Charlie enough when he was alive for all his service and time, as well as the financial support?

And then it hits me that remembering them is not what they really want. They have not done what they've done to be remembered. They have done what they've done to show they remember us!

Their gifts, their compassion, their empathy and their service were ways they expressed that they knew who we were, what

we were doing and what needed to be done were important.

They remembered what this campus meant to them, from Charlie's early years, when he played as child while Kimball was being built to Patti's early years when her father was called to the ministry here, and her mother worked for the College, even driving off to recruit students. They remembered the joy they felt when their wedding reception was held in the Great Hall.

They are too humble to relish our ways of remembering their gifts.

ocky Mountain College, situated on 60 tree-shaded acres with walkways weaving past flowered gardens and beautiful sculptures, preserves its past while recognizing its obligation to provide progressive learning centers.

Former U.S. Senator Conrad Burns, RMont., is fond of saying that “history is a blueprint for the future.” At Rocky Mountain College, that certainly is true. A case in point, featured in this publication, is Kimball Hall, built in 1914 as a women’s residence hall. A complete renovation with major new construction has transformed the 94-year-old structure into an expanded building, which will have new classrooms, conference rooms and faculty offices. Thanks to the generosity of the Charles and Patricia Morledge family, the new building will not only be larger, nearly doubled in size with the attached 8,700 sq. ft. annex, but it will also be more energy efficient. Almost 50 percent of the older materials that could not be refurbished and reused were recycled.

Some of the plaster from old walls and dirt dug from foundations was used as fill for a new soccer field. Recycling efforts and energy-saving features are part of the College’s effort to have the complex certified under Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, a program that rates buildings on energy use and other environmental factors.

ndowed by a $110,000 grant from the Getty Foundation, Rocky Mountain College embarked on a comprehensive campus assessment. The grant funded the study of older buildings and landscaping on campus to help Rocky preserve the structures and manage its trees. Rocky now has a long-term plan to keep its “urban forest” vigorous, and for maintenance for its historic buildings. It also has long-term goals for renovation and construction.

The Campus

The campus of Rocky Mountain College occupies approximately 60 park-like acres in the northwest residential section of Billings.

Deciduous and evergreen trees, shrubs, and perennials make the campus particularly welcoming.

the Rocky Green, this structure houses the dining room, snack bar, bookstore, game room, Fraley Lounge, campus mail services, the offices of ASRMC, career services, and the office of the dean for student life. The building has been extensively expanded and remodeled.

+ Facilities and buildings that are located on campus include:

4a. LILLIS CHAPEL, 2007. Located in the lower level of the Bair Family Student Center.

1. ALDEN HALL, 1937. This attractive stone and stucco building, the gift of the Alden Trust and founded by the late George Alden, Worcester, Mass., served as a residence hall for men until 1973. Currently, it houses faculty offices and the Institute for Peace Studies.

4b. ROCKY MOUNTAIN COLLEGE BOOKSTORE, 1961; 1997. The College bookstore, stocked to meet students' needs for books and supplies, is located in the Bair Family Student Center.

2. ANDERSON HALL, 1970; 1998. Anderson Hall offers traditional residence hall housing for 72 students, with common restrooms, showers, and kitchens. One of the campus's most popular spots, the ASRMC lounge, is located in the basement. Yoder Lounge, a comfortable space for study, computer use, and relaxation, connects Anderson to Widenhouse Hall. Anderson is named for Lula Anderson, a member of the first graduating class of Billings Polytechnic Institute.

3. BAIR FAMILY SCIENCE CENTER, 1981.

Named for the family of Montana pioneer and rancher, Charles M. Bair, Rocky Mountain College's major science facility houses the science and mathematics disciplines and is complete with classrooms, laboratories, seminar rooms, and faculty offices. It also houses the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Spectrometer. The facility was made possible by a major gift from Alberta M. Bair, daughter of Charles M. Bair, together with gifts from other donors to the Second Century Fund.

4. BAIR FAMILY STUDENT CENTER, 1961; 1997.

5. EATON HALL, 1909. Originally known as Science Hall, this building, the gift of a group of pioneer businessmen in Billings, houses administrative offices. The hall is named for the founders of Billings Polytechnic Institute, Lewis T. and Ernest T. Eaton.

6. EDUCATIONAL RESOURCE CENTER, 1958; 1999. This building houses the Paul M. Adams Memorial Library, computer-equipped writing, data, and business classrooms, and a distance learning center. The library, now the largest part of the ERC, contains a collection of over 85,000 books and periodicals accessible via the library's computer catalog. The ERC also houses the Alice Giddings King Memorial Archives, the College's Heritage Archives and collections belonging to the United Methodist Church and the United Church of Christ.

7. FORTIN EDUCATION CENTER, 1969. Fortin Education Center houses several academic programs, a gymnasium, auxiliary exercise areas, a swimming pool, a health suite, a large lecture hall, classrooms, laboratories, and offices for faculty and administrators. It is named for Philip Fortin, a Billings businessman and philanthropist.

8. JORGENSON HALL, 1964; 1998. This residence hall consists of 48 apartment units with private entrances. On the west end of campus,

It was not unusual in the early days of the College to have a few cowboy visitors ride down Zimmerman Trail to look over the campus.

Jorgenson is a fine retreat for our upper-class, nontraditional, and married students, as well as students with families.

9. KIMBALL HALL, 1914; 2009. This stone and stucco building, formerly a residence hall for women, was named for the principal donor of funds, the late Mrs. Flora Kimball. Mrs. Flora Kimball was from Portsmouth, New Hampshire. This facility was renovated thanks to the generosity of the Morledge Family and will opened this fall with faculty offices and classrooms. It is named Morledge-Kimball Hall.

10. LOSEKAMP HALL, 1917. This sandstone building, in a modified collegiate gothic style, was a gift of the late John D. Losekamp, a pioneer merchant of Billings. It houses the music and theatre arts programs and the Ruth and Vernon F. Taylor Auditorium, which is used for convocations, chapel services, drama productions, recitals, and other special events.

Losekamp houses studios, practice rooms, and classrooms.

11. PRESCOTT HALL, 1916; 2001. This stone building was erected through the generosity of the late Amos L. Prescott of New York City.

The commons, a large paneled room with a wood-and-beam ceiling, has large fireplaces at each end. Before 1961 it served as the

College's dining hall. Extensive renovation and expansion were completed in fall 2001. It currently houses administrative offices and serves as a gathering place for the campus community.

12. RIMVIEW HALL, 2004. Located on the western edge of campus, this residence hall provides 200 private rooms within a suite-style complex (four students with private sleeping quarters per suite). Each suite is equipped with a micro-kitchen and 1.5 baths. Occupancy of this facility is restricted to students with sophomore status or higher.

13. TECHNOLOGY HALL, 1922. This sandstone structure contains offices, classrooms, an art gallery, art labs, and the College's maintenance department. It is also home to the RynikerMorrison Art Gallery, which features continual public exhibitions and artist receptions.

14. TYLER HALL, 1930. This beautiful sandstone building in the collegiate gothic style is architecturally one of the finest on campus.

This gift of Mrs. G. W. Mehaffey, Brookline, Mass., is a memorial to her father, the late W. Graham Tyler. It served until 1971 as a men's residence hall. It now houses faculty offices, laboratories for the computer science program, and facilities for the teacher education program.

15. WIDENHOUSE HALL, 1961; 1998. Dedicated in 1973 to the memory of Philip M. Widenhouse, third president of Rocky Mountain College, this residence hall provides traditional and suite-style accommodations for 176 students. Each room has a private bathroom and kitchenette with refrigerator, sink, and microwave with adjoining storage rooms and personal laundry facilities.

+ Facilities and buildings that are not located on campus include:

A. FLIGHT TRAINING OPERATIONS, 2007. The fleet of Piper Archer IIIs, with modern navigation and avionics systems, provides basic training aircraft for students. Beechcraft Bonanza and Baron aircraft round out the fleet. The new location at the Billings Logan International Airport provides closed access to flight training and Class C airport operations.

B. ROCKY HALL, 1989. This stucco building, located on the corner of Rimrock Road and Augusta Lane, houses the aviation program and a daycare center.

C. INTERMOUNTAIN EQUESTRIAN CENTER, 1999.

Located nine miles from campus, Rocky Mountain College contracts facilities that include a large heated indoor arena, two extensive outdoor arenas, round pens, numerous trails for pleasure riding, and top-notch stabling for 60 horses.

The photographers

A

portion of the Getty grant was used to commission Paul Whiting to capture images of the buildings on campus, focusing on some of the unique architectural detail in the historic buildings.

Whiting has devoted a great deal of his time to photography for several historic preservation groups in the Midwest and here, in Billings, as well for architects and landscape architects. Much of his work is with black and white photography. His interest in historic sites and structures extends to vernacular architecture as well. He believes this “architecture of the people” contributes to a community's sense of place and identity, in contrast to cookie-cutter urban sprawl.

Whiting, whom has a bachelor's degree in math and physics from St. Olaf College and a master's in French from Northwestern University, spent much of his career teaching high school French, helping communities establish their own cable casting facilities, and serving as communications director for several Lutheran bishops. This latter work led to a video project in Mexico, where he lived for a year and a half.

There, he produced videotape in English and in Spanish in collaboration with a grass roots Mexico organization dedicated to improving the lives of urban and rural marginalized people.

Whiting has exhibited at the School of Architecture at MSUBozeman, and in several galleries in and around Billings.

Currently he is pursuing a relatively new method of printing archival carbon-ink photographs from scanned black and white film negatives. It's a process holding great promise for documentation of historic sites as well as family histories.

Dave M. Shumway, from Batavia, Illinois, was drawn to Rocky Mountain College by its location -- close to the mountains, Yellowstone National Park, and pristine rivers. Shumway interned in the marketing and publications department at Rocky, where he provided valuable service with Web content, as well as photographing and videotaping campus events.

Now, the summa cum laude graduate, who double majored in business management and economics, is the Web content manager and photographer for the College. Shumway also has five years of camera sales experience and developed the curriculum for digital photography classes for Best Buy. Shumway has two passions, one for the outdoors and one for photography. To this end he spends much of his time in the ecosystems in and around Yellowstone National Park, to the extent of at least one trip to the Park each month of the year.

Working as the photographer for RMC, Shumway's assignments include all campus activities, from the academic to the athletic, both of which help keep his eye prepared for his next trip into nature. He is also adjunct landscape and nature photography instructor. He is the recent recipient of the Prestigious Garrison Art Show “Best in Show” award.

Shumway has a unique image library of more than 10,000 images available for stock use or print. His work can be seen online at daveshumway.com. An extensive collection of his event and sports work is hosted at photos.rocky.edu.

Historic photos: Sadly, the names of the photographers who captured early images of the College were not recorded.

Fortunately, the images of buildings and of student life survive. They are archived online at www.rocky.edu. The Western Heritage Center staff helped create the archival files for a special exhibition when Rocky celebrated its 125th anniversary.
