Kia ora, A massive thank you to the team of whanau/parents who are working together to keep the pool open over the summer break. Our amazing pool helpers are the: Wright, Douglas, Moore, Coxon, Hill, Bloxham and Urlich whanau.

With the hot weather coming, our community will appreciate this leisure option. As with all fun things, we can have a smidgen of a group who do not follow the rules. Please phone 111. Silly actions can sometimes lead to awful accidents and we certainly do not want that.

Our Year 6 art project looks amazing. A massive thank you to Mr. Phil Gurnick and Room 2 on the fabulous art work on the bike container. Your artwork enhances this area and will be a lasting memory of the time you shared at Waihi East School. Year 7 class placements are currently being discussed at Waihi College. Individual interviews with College staff will take place in January and Phil is meeting with Heather Tucker prior to this as support to transition your child into a new learning environment. Prize Giving is nearly upon us. I look forward to celebrating our successes with you.

Last week, I had the opportunity to do some Facebook investigating at school due to some tricky comments directed at our students. Facebook is not a site children use at school, however when the issues spill over into the school community, I need to get involved. Without being rude, and thinking of your tamariki/children, I ask that if your child has a Facebook account, please check it out every now and again. Please consider putting protections in place so that only friends can view photos and leads. Some beautiful students look much older than their age and some comments/friends may be worth checking out. I leave this in your very capable hands.

Our school garden is producing beautiful kai. My thanks to our caretaker Ross Cowan and Lynette Steele who weed and water this area daily, ensuring we harvest some top quality veg. Please help yourself to the produce over the summer season and give the garden a water with the hose if you have a free moment or two.

SCHOOL NOTICES ** PRIZEGIVING INFORMATION ** A reminder that our prizegiving will be held next Wednesday 16th December at 10.30am. We would love to see as many of you here as possible. Prizegiving is a great opportunity to celebrate with us as we acknowledge individual student classroom achievements as well as farewell our Year 6 students as they move into their next exciting schooling phase—the shift to College! Following assembly there will be a yummy shared kai of Christmas ham rolls with homemade coleslaw. Our thanks to the Tai whanau for catering our prizegiving lunch and for feeding our school pig during this year. Children are welcome to leave after prizegiving lunch but please ensure your child’s teacher is made aware.

Helpers are required from 9am to help make the rolls before prizegiving. Please let the office know if you can help.

LAST DAY OF SCHOOL 2015 Our last school day this year is Thursday 17th December.

School will be closing at 12.15pm on this day.

TOUCH RUGBY Congratulations to East Beta (yr 5/6) who have made it through to the semi-finals tonight. East Dragons (yr 3/4) will play in the finals tonight, and East Eels (yr 3/4) will play off for 5th & 6th place. Well done to all of our students who committed to their team and gave it heaps this year!

LIBRARY Our library is now closed and we are running our annual stock take. Please return all books - 250 books are currently outstanding. Sharon has a prize for the class who is the first to return all books. Fantastic!

TOUCH RUGBY DRAW—9 DECEMBER Semi finals and finals will be played today. Sausage sizzle (home made farm sausages) and juicies available to purchase. $2 each.

POOL KEYS Pool keys are now available through the office at a cost of $20 per key ($5 will be refunded to you on return of your key in 2016). It is a requirement to purchase one key per whanau. Keys are not to be shared. This money goes towards the costs of chlorine and maintenance of our pool during the summer season.

SANTAS COMING TO ATHENREE HOMESTEAD Ho ho ho…… Santa will be at the Athenree Homestead this Sunday (13 December) from 1—4pm. Dear Parents and Whānau The Leadership Team presented the 2015 school wide data to the Board of Trustees on Monday evening. We were impressed by the outcomes and the next steps that have been formulated for our children.

Celebrations and the school in action

Buddy programmes (tuakana teina) across the school has supported achievement levels and positive interactions between students, allowing our leaders in the senior school the opportunity to form relationships with our juniors.



Whānau programmes have been well received eg: Reading Together and homework tips.



IEPs are initiated for ALL students who sit just below, below and well below National Standards. Students who graduate from IEPs are celebrated at whole school assembly where whānau are invited and students receive a certificate and kai voucher.



The Leadership Team has closely monitored all underachievers every term.

Teacher aide programmes are modified to accelerate this group from the findings, using recent data and designed around needs and interests.



External programmes provided by the Ministry of Education- focus 2015 was Accelerated Literacy Learning- with a reading focus.



The use of the teaching for inquiry model has had impact in all classes. The use of video and personal reflection has supported staff to consider new practices.



Teachers as experts, are working with underachievers every day (as expected in our school wide curriculum delivery agreements). Student ownership of the tuakana-teina program process - students supporting each other’s learning.

Areas for improvement for 2016

A continued shift for all students working at or above National Standards, with particular focus on our priority Pacifika and Maori learners (note our Maori students are tracking above National data).



Focus on reading in the junior school, and raising achievement and engagement with our boys in all areas.



Further communication and shared understanding of curriculum goals with whānau to design programmes with joint activities for their tamariki (IEPs).



Proactively draw on community resources and expertise to improve learning opportunities for students, with a particular focus on Pasifika.



Continuation of teaching as an inquiry with a key competency focus alongside a teaching strategy as our main focus for 2016.



Continuation of the use of video and personal reflection has supported staff to consider new practices. Next step is to view each other’s teaching (or video) with a critical eye to develop practice, generate ideas and consider options.



Staff led workshops for whānau once a term. These may include pizza and puzzles, bring a bloke/shelia day (a special role model), chips and challenges.

Progress Statements Maths, reading and writing each have their celebrations and tricky bits. We are well on track to meet the Ministry of Education target of 85% achieving at or above National Standard by the end of 2017.

School Charter Our Charter is ready for implementation in 2016. Each of the goals has been fleshed out into manageable chunks of mahi/work for next year. In addition to these we have our targets of raising achievement in mathematics, reading and writing. Our full Charter will be available on our website once the Ministry of Education have signed it off in March.

Goal 1 Utilizing innovative practices, teaching staff will nurture a passion for learning in students with a strong emphasis in literacy and numeracy.

Goal 2 Engage all students effectively, with a particular focus on Treaty of Waitangi partners.

Goal 3 Develop/maintain reciprocal partnerships with parents and whﾄ］au within the Waihi East community.

Goal 4 Supporting and engaging Pasifika students and families, with the intent of all Pasifika students reaching National Standards.

Goal 5 Supporting inclusion for students with special education needs.

Technology Proposal Rachael Coll presented a very informative proposal about strengthening our ICT tools in the school to strengthen achievement outcomes for our tamariki/children. We will be sharing her proposal with you in the New Year and consulting with the school community as to how you would like us to move forward.
