WAIHI EAST SCHOOL SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 02/2015

11th February 2015

Kia ora Thank you for your empathy and messages of support during this incredibly sad time for Maren and her whanau/friends. Your messages have been beautiful and of great assistance during this time. Zenya’s funeral is this Saturday at the Waihi Beach Community Centre at 1 p.m. Together we will support our friend, colleague and teacher. I would like to pass on thanks Robin Douglas who, over Waitangi weekend at short notice, was able to come to school and take away significant debris caused by the high winds which brought down a large tree branch. Thanks Robin! Next week our school will be missing our year 5 and 6 students as they head to camp. Phil and Robbie have a massive camp planned and a good group of parents who will support new learning and participation. I look forward to visiting you during this time. All Year 3 and 4 children are also getting ready for tent city, another exciting activity to kick of the year. Kapahaka is starting up in week four. Matua Larn Wilkinson is our kaiako and is very excited about leading our school with kapahaka, mau rakau (sticks), waka arma (canoes) and in class support. Kapahaka will be available to all children and will run on a Thursday afternoon. Have a chat to your tamariki about joining in. Thank you to whanau for supporting with supervision and transport of our mine tours. Phil Salmon from the Mine Education Center has led exciting and informative lessons, a great motivator for our GOLD teaching and learning this term. Remember our Splash and Dash on Wednesday 25th of February. Pack a picnic lunch and come hang out with us at Waihi Beach. This is a great day to mix and mingle with our school community. Nga mihi nui, Emily (ehargreaves@east.school.nz) SCHOOL PICNIC AND SPLASH & DASH We will be holding this on Wednesday 25th February (weather permitting) at Bowentown’s Anzac Bay. We will be leaving school at 9am and returning in time for buses, leaving Bowentown at 2.00pm. The Splash and Dash (duathlon) will start approximately 9.30am. No boats will be operating on this day. PUPIL ABSENCE FROM SCHOOL So there is no doubt as to a child's whereabouts, parents are asked to inform the school whenever their child is going to be absent. If the child is away for several days it is only necessary to let the school know on the first day of absence. It is still appropriate to send a note of explanation or make contact with the teacher after a lengthy absence. On the first day of absence the school can be notified in either of the following ways: 1) by telephoning - 863 8693 2) by sending a note to the child's teacher via another child. 3) sending a text to 021 0258 4817 Sharon or another staff member will take the message and note it on a form that is circulated to all classes by 9.30am each day. Note: It is a legal requirement for schools to be advised of children's absences. NITS Please ensure you are regularly checking your child/ren’s hair for nits, and treating accordingly if and when necessary. Lice treatment and combes are available at no charge through the office.

MUSIC LESSONS 2015 Mrs Wella Tasma’s music lessons will start from Wednesday 11th February at school. Individual or group lessons are available in: Recorder, flute, singing, keyboard, guitar, ukulele and saxophone. For information and enrolment phone: 863 6322 or e-mail rtzsong134@gmail.com SCHOOL NEWSLETTERS Wednesday is school newsletter day and a newsletter is issued every Wednesday - ask your child for it each Wednesday or check it out on our school website. Usually school newsletters are given to the eldest child in a family or the only child going to East School. These newsletters are the main means of communicating with parents and I would ask that parents read them carefully. Quite often a reply slip is attached and it is most helpful if we get an early response to such requests. Many thanks! We appreciate the support of those who pay for adverts on the newsletter. Please support them with your patronage. If you would prefer your newsletter emailed to you please email Sharon in the office.
