Kia ora Yesterday the NED show rolled into Waihi East School. The message of kindness was shared in an engaging way of magic tricks and humour. As you know, there was no cost to this show. You may choose to support the NED team by buying a yoyo- $8, $15 and $20. These are sold at school with our awesome sales team of Tash, Lily and Brooke.

A huge thank you for supporting our mufti day last week. Over $200 was raised to support the St John’s Education programme. A massive effort.

Please take the time to read our news from the Board of Trustees. It’s a catch up of what the Board is up to and plans for the months ahead. A particular focus is the achievement data this month.

Staff are using this information to refine programmes and purchase resources. Our next Board of Trustees meeting is on Monday 31 of August at 5.30pm. All Welcome!

Miniball starts at the Events Centre next Thursday for year one and two children. If you would like to manage this group, please let us know. Parent helpers are always welcome.

Our prizegiving kai is looking very tasty. Our poaka/pig is growing due to all our lunch scraps.

School Notices AGRICULTURE DAY—Monday 2 November This year Waihi East School’s Agriculture Day will be held on Monday 2nd November. Group Day will be on Friday 6th November at Waimata School.

SCHOLASTIC ISSUE # 5 Scholastic brochures have been issued and orders close on Friday August 28th. All orders to the office.

NETBALL There are 2 more weeks of netball this term.

‘THE LUNCH BOX CLUB’ LUNCHES Due to the lower than expected orders for school lunches, Farm Gate Deli Waihi Beach will no longer be providing the school lunches to our school. ‘The Lunch Box Club’ are in the process of finding a great replacement café to provide our school lunches, and we will let you know the details and menu once this service re-commences. Any credits on your account will remain with ‘The Lunch Box Club’ and be available to use with the new lunch provider.

The witch felt bad. The witch was so sorry. Miss Green and Mr Green said we should have a picnic. “Yes please, and a BBQ” said the witch.

News from the Board of Trustees July 2015 Learning programmes: 





This term our focus is on transforming our school. It is a science and technology focus. Each class will choose an area of the school to develop. As there is no budget for this, the Board look forward to some creative ideas coming from each room.

St John Ambulance Education Officers have been on site teaching children what to do in an emergency. Each class has participated and learnt these essential skills.

Students are enjoying the Jump Jam fitness programme. Students lead this and it is fantastic to see the number of staff who are participating and engaging students.

Three boys have been accepted to take part in the Kaihautu Program in term three; this is aimed at developing leadership and self-management skills.

We continue to fundraise for Kapakaka uniforms. Nachos which were prepared by students were well received at the end of term 2.

Life Education has been postponed for 2015 due to the cost of $5 per student.

Electives start next week. Twelve options are available with new whanau supporting activities which is extremely pleasing.

Sharlene Kelly from ENERGIZE has a huge term planned at Waihi East School.

This includes a sugary drink session, homeplay challenge (whanau based activities) and supporting kiwi sport facilitators.

The NED Show is coming to Waihi East School on the 28th of July. It is a feel good educational programme that has the important message - Never Give Up, Encourage Others and Do Your Best. There is no cost for this awesome show however we will be selling ‘NED’ flash-as yoyos at school after their visit.

A new teacher aide programme is in place using the end of term two data. All under achievers have a double dip situation-a teaching session with their class teacher and a teacher aide four days a week. I am impressed with our teacher aides who are running programmes that are extremely engaging and specific to the needs of their groups. Our teacher aides have a copy of individual education plans from classroom teachers to help them align their programme to class work.

Staff have invited parents for student led conferences. These were well attended at the end of term 2 with year 4-6 whanau. Junior teachers have student led conferences on anniversary dates throughout the year. The Board encourage whanau to take part in this learning partnership.

Room 5 has a third year university student teacher with them this term. Briar is supporting the programme ensuring readiness for the classroom after graduation.

 

Room 9 has a Teacher Refresher Course teacher in this term. Emily will support with teacher observations and release.

Accelerated Literacy Learning, a Ministry of Education funded programme continues this term with Briar supporting teachers with their practice and Emily working with a reading group.

Student Support We have a number of supports in place for children and their whanau. The Board encourages whanau to talk to staff if they would like additional support.  

        

Alan Scott is working with a number of children and families in the school setting.

Naomi from Social Worker in Schools is supporting whanau in the home, supporting children get to medical appointments and attending appropriate individual education programmes (IEP) meetings.

A MOE psychologist is on site twice a term.

A behaviour support worker is on site each Monday to support children in the class setting.

Three resource Teachers of Learning and Behaviour are working with staff and students.

Resource Teacher of Literacy is working with two teachers and taking group work.

The dental caravan is on site this term.

Tineke continues her Tuesday medical clinic at school.

Food parcels made up from KidsCan food and donated goods have been sent home to numerous whanau during the year.

Second hand uniforms have been handed out to those in need.

We currently have additional funding from the Ministry for ESOL students (english for speakers of other languages), behaviour and learning support.

Policy Review The following Policies were reviewed and will be ratified during our August meeting.

As stated by the Education review Office 2014, these Policies needed to be modified to align current practice to paperwork. Ministry of Education documents supported a number of changes.  Behaviour policy (inclusive of bullying)  Student Achievement  Assessment, Evaluation, Record Keeping and Reporting  Finance

Achievement Data The Leadership Team presented July achievement data to the Board of Trustees.

The junior data is based on children who have had a report against National Standards, the Year 4-6 data based on progress towards National Standards at the

end of the year. The data is the basis of our next three staff meetings. As a team we will look at ‘what’s hot and what’s not’ and what are our agreements in teaching these essential areas.

Information shared:  Reading is tricky in the junior school however as children move through the year groups and special programmes are put in place, reading data improves in the senior school.  Writing is tricky in the senior school when children are writing for different purposes e.g. a science procedure, not daily recounts.  Some pleasing data, particularly with Maori students.  All underachieving children are seen by their teacher and a teacher aide four days a week. Whanau are invited to help write individual education plans for these children.  New and exciting teacher aide programmes are in place for this term.  Purchases of new resources and equipment will align to this data e.g. new reading materials for the junior school.  Children will be interviewed about their learning- e.g. what helps you learn.  Parent workshops will continue in reading and mathematics with Nik Laing.  The library is open and supervised for a chill out space during morning tea and lunch.

Deputy Principal Appointment The BOT ratified of the employment of Rachael Coll, permanent DP effective term 4 2015.

Room 9 Katie Sinnott is off overseas from the 14th of August. Katie has been an asset to our school. Jo Gilbert will take up this position from Katie. Katie and Jo are doing a

transition time over the next few weeks– teaching together and building relationships.

Staff Development 2015  Phil and Briar attended a SENCO meeting in Thames. The course was work-shopped with RTLB and there was a focus on dyslexia.  Phil, Emily and Briar attended the second part of the appraisal course on the 2nd of July. We will be informing staff through staff meeting workshops. Our aim is for new procedures to be in place in 2016.

Holidays Ross noted no vandalism over the holiday break. The school looks very tidy and well cared for.

Work around the school  Room 2-3 resource bay will be re-clad at the BOT’s expense due to it being a leaky building.  Ross has noted a leak in the roof between Room One and the office during heavy rain. This will be fixed in the near future.  David Dixon has removed a number of radiators across the school that were not being used after heat pumps were installed. The boiler will be removed in the near future.  The pool needs to be repainted and the side rails replaced in the next holidays.

This year we also need to change the sand in the filters.

June Accounts for Payment Please view our accounts to date. June accounts have been received and accounts totaling $36,785 (41% of budget) are to be approved for payment.

Charter This term we will develop a questionnaire for whanau. Our aim is to find out what is important to whanau and to include this in our guiding document. This will be presented to the Board before it is sent home. Kay Scahill is keen to assist in all areas of our Charter review.

Community Forum A new property has become available for the Community Forum Gardens. The Forum will not be proceeding with the community gardens at school.
