WAIHI EAST SCHOOL SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 16/2015

3rd June 2015

Kia ora Teacher Only Day was very rewarding this week. As a staff we put ourselves in the ‘learning’ position and had an opportunity to develop our skills and knowledge. The focus was on gender differences in the classroom and how we are wired. This was very interesting. Chat to your tamariki, can they notice subtle changes in the classroom after staff have developed their knowledge. It was great to have a number of whanau attend Mike’s afternoon session. We hope you found this rewarding. A massive thank you to Sue Brook who made sure this session ran like clock work. We have a huge number of children who would like to participate in the cluster Matariki Hikoi. Supervision during off site activities is very important. If you can help out, please let your class teacher know. Numbers attending will depend on the help we receive. It was fabulous to receive a new guideline from the Ministry of Education on Bullying Prevention and Response. The Board will use this document to support its future decision making. This guide describes bullying as: deliberate, involves changing the balance of power, has an element of repetition and is harmful. We look forward to sharing our new knowledge on bullying with you in the near future. Due to ill health, our May Board meeting was cancelled. Our next Board meeting is on Monday 22 of June. KIDS’ ZONE STORIES I got some new shoes from The Warehouse. By Tevita H, Rm 6, age 5. I went to cross country and I came 3rd place and got a certificate. I was so fast and I never stopped until I got to the finish. By Ashton C-G, Rm 8, age 5. On cross country day I was dressed up because it was mufti day. Mum was watching me run the race. Mum was really happy because I came first and I was really happy as well. It was really fun because my brother and his friend screamed for me because I came first. By Kayla B, Rm 8, age 5 Last term we went to the gold mine we got to do some gold panning. We had some dirt then we put sand in the bowl then we made a slide thing then we got to have a chocolate then we went home in the car. By Moana-Lee A, Rm 5, age 6. Once upon a time in a castle the dragons ruled the castle. They had sharp spikes from their heads to tails. They breathed fire. The dragons’ skin was thick as rock and smooth as snake skin. They were mean dragons. On the front of their castle they had big heads at the top they looked very scary, the eyes moved when you walked whenever you came in. They would burn to dust so nobody ever came in. One day a man came in with armour that destroys fire so he came in. The dragon breathed as hard as he could and that man said “I’m kind hearted and I’m a hero who saves the world, my name is Larry. You can breathe as much as you can but nothing is going to happen.” So he killed the dragon then he ruled the place. He took all the dragon stuff out and put all his stuff in and let everybody in. They lived happily ever after. B Connor L, Rm 3, age 8.
