WAIHI EAST SCHOOL SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 08/2015

25th March 2015

Kia ora, Today we congratulate our fabulous Deputy Principal Glen McCullough on winning a Team Leader position at Bellevue School in Tauranga starting in term 2. Glen has been an effective teacher and leader at Waihi East School and I acknowledge his contribution. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I thank Glen and wish him well in his leadership journey. I am currently in discussions with the Board as to our next steps. Phil Gurnick will be acting Deputy Principal for term 2 and a fixed term reliever will be teaching in Room 9. The leadership team have been reviewing our teacher aide programme. As you know all children identified by class work as not progressing towards National Standards on anniversary dates/end of year 4-6 are taught by their teacher daily. As an inquiry this term we have released children to work with teacher aides outside the classroom instead of in class support on top of this. We are now currently considering the impact socially and academically on this move. Next Wednesday we look forward to our whanau get-together and Giant Pumpkin Competition evening. Check out our flyer which outlines our new competition– ‘Best Veggie Creation’. If your whanau (like many others) do not have a pumpkin to weigh in, design a Veggie Creation and bring it along. As always we are very generously supported by sponsors. A huge thank you to Waihi Beach Top Ten ( a nights stay for your whanau), Waihi Beach Hotel, Eatery & Store ($50 voucher), Angelo’s Pizza ($30 voucher) Waihi Beach Mini Putt ($30 voucher) Waihi Beach RSA ($50 voucher), Love Ruby Photography session, Waihi East staff gourmet hamper, a Roast Meal hamper complete with veggies courtesy of Growlink, and 2 x entries + t-shirt and sports ball to the Junior Survivor. Hmmmm, how exciting. Next week is a short week leading into the April school holidays. Come along and join us on Thursday arvo for cool kids and mufti day. As always we love having you here.

Nga mihi nui, Emily (ehargreaves@east.school.nz)

KIDS ZONE I am going to Rippa Rugby after school. By Max M, age 5, room 6. I fell off my scooter and hurt myself. By Anna R, age 5, room 6. Yesterday RM 3 were learning about the 3 types of famous rocks in New Zealand. They are igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic. Igneous is a rock that is made by hardened magma then when it escapes, its called basalt and sedimentary is a rock made by other rocks melted layer on layer on layer. Lastly but not least metamorphic. Its made by other rocks compounding together and mashing together. By Paul W, age 8, room 3. This is a story about tent city. Hey, my name is Samson. I am at the gorge with my school, my friends and my teachers. My friends had a flashlight but I wanted to go in front of them but I didn’t have a flashlight but my friend had a flashlight and he was able to see with his flashlight. At the same time you can hear his echo and you can call at the people and I can hear my voice. By Samson P, age 9, room 9. Burgers! Burgers are delicious and scrumptious. Burgers have cheese running down the side of the burger. Lettuce is flopping down the side of the burger. Carrot is falling out the side of the burger. The patty goes on the burger last then the bun goes on the tippy top-the very, very last. I do not like pickle, onion, tomato sauce, tomato and mayonnaise on my burger. By Alyssa M, age 8, room 9.
