Kia ora, A huge thank you to whanau who completed our health survey. We now have a very clear picture about what you would like us to teach and additional supports you would like to see in place. All surveys went into a lucky draw to win a ham.

Congratulations to the Burr’s, our winning whanau. Your ham will be in the office next week.

Senior school electives draw to a close this Friday. A massive thank you to our parents who led areas around the school. This terms electives have been amazing. Children have learnt from your skills, attitude and enthusiasm.

This week was a special Duffy Role Model assembly. Gavin Hill presented to our school. Children enjoyed hearing about overcoming issues to get to our dreams and aspiration. As always Duffy Books were presented to all children, a great end to a lovely assembly.

Next week I am dipping my toes into teaching. Room 9 and I will be working alongside each other . Tasks include a school LifePod fundraiser– making a lunch item to be sold on Thursday. Please order your lunches by Monday lunchtime to allow Room 9 to write shopping lists and purchase the required ingredients.

Next week we are presenting the modifications we have made to our school grounds. Each class will present their Journey – the tricky stuff and how they overcame problems. Come along and hear what each class has been up to. Our sharing assembly will be on Wednesday at 1.30pm under the kai area.

On Tuesday our netball teams head to Tauranga to compete in the WBOP Cluster Winter Tournament. We are very excited for you. Enjoy your time in the sun on Tuesday. We look forward to hearing your results. A huge thank you to the coaches – Leann, Sharon P, Paula & Jodie. What an amazing group.

This week we are sending home a pumpkin seed to all whanau as part of our annual pumpkin growing competition in term one, 2016. Amazing prizes will be up for grabs again. The Dixon whanau took out many prizes last year. The challenge will be on as to who will be the 2016 champion. Additional seeds can be purchased from the office at $0.50 cents each.

School Notices ROOM 7’S MERRY PAINTING ADVENTURE Room 7 would really appreciate some donations of paint, to repaint and re-vamp our school merry. We will be painting this Thursday (tomorrow!), so any donations of paint would be required for tomorrow. Also if you would like to come and help us paint, we would love to see you! Thanks in advance.

AGRICULTURE DAY—Monday 2 November This year Waihi East School’s Agriculture Day will be held on Monday 2nd November. Group Day will be on Friday 6th November at Waimata School. Registration forms are now available at the office. We also have bottles of Animal Health Tonic kindly donated by Agri-Sea NZ. Make sure to collect your free bottle when you hand in your registration form.

YEAR 5/6 COG BASKETBALL This week games will be played. Please be there at 3.30pm ready to play. Subs $20. Please pay to East School office.

EAR CARAVAN The mobile Ear caravan will be in Waihi tomorrow, Thursday 17th September parked at Waihi Central School Moresby Ave from 9.30am—2pm. Only parent’s/caregivers are able to attend with children.

KAPAHAKA TUTOR Our School needs a new Kapahaka tutor. Our tutor needs to be fun, firm, fair and kind, have lots of enthusiasm, and the ability to lead our beautiful tamariki in waiata and dance. This is a paid position for 1.5 hrs a week. Time can be negotiated and will require a police check. If this sounds like you we invite you to write a letter (address to Emily) of interest outlining your skill set, experience and availability.

YUMMY STICKERS We need to send away all our yummy stickers at the end of this term to exchange for some free sports gear. Can we please have all your stickers brought into school by the end of September.

SCHOLASTIC ISSUE # 6 Scholastic issue 6 have gone home. These need to be returned to school this Friday 18th September. Books should be back before the holidays.

WAIHI EAST’S GOT TALENT Finals will be held for Waihi East’s Got Talent this Friday 18th September at 1.45pm in our school hall. Please come along to support our seven finalists! We have guest judges and performances too.

On September the 3rd it was my birthday and I turned 9. I got $40 and I went to the disco and I paid for me and my cousin. We were listening to ‘Watch me Whip’. We did the dance and favourite song was playing, it was Psy, it was funny because the way they danced. They were selling hot dog sausages, caramel fudge, cake and juicies. My favourite food was hot dogs and we went home at 6.30pm. I had $28 left. That was the funniest disco I ever had.

All about my Family I am writing this because I love my whole family and they are amazing.

You might say they are normal but I say they are outstanding people. In my family are Kaitlin, Tyler, Olivia, Aunty Kelly, Allen, Aunty Max, Uncle Ian, Pagen, Trent, Mum, Rhys, Ryan, Josh, Korban, Nana and Grandad.

I’ve got 6 cousins, 2 aunties, 2 uncles and 2 brothers. Isn’t that a lot of people in one family! We have got some pets called Spot, Phoebe and Tui. Tui is a dog, Spot and Phoebe are cats. I love my family because they do lots of amazing things with me like play board games with me and we have water fights using hoses, buckets, water guns and lots of other fun stuff. My Nana and Grandad get me clothes and lots of other toys and stuff, cool yeh! I’ve got a question for you. Try and guess how old my Mum is. If you get it, you are amazing but if you have a try you are also amazing. For Father’s Day we got Dad a box of favourites and he loved it and I made him a Fathers Day card. It was blue with lots of writing and I made him a sign for his man cave.

Three days ago, me and my Poppy and sister went down to my Dad’s tool shed to put back a bunny that my cat caught. It was a baby. It was grey and white and black I think. After that, I got a lamb. It got sick because it had runny poos. It might not survive. I’m sad because it might not survive.

PUBLIC HEATLTH NURSE The Public Health nurse has informed us that there has been a marked increase in the number of vomiting and diarrhoea incidences around Waihi recently. She has been advised by the Medical Officer of Health, Population Health in Hamilton. If your child is experiencing high fever, stomach cramps, nausea and vomiting and /or diarrhoea they are to be home until 24/48 hours from their last episode.

Some children and adults may also be carrying the illness but have no symptoms so therefore we stress the importance of good hand hygiene practises. Any concerns please contact your doctor.

ABC WAIHI ABC Waihi are hosting an art show fundraiser in support of Child Cancer. Term Three Focus Transformers (Science and technology) Learning programmes: 

This term our focus is on transforming our school. Staff are starting to put their classroom ideas into practice. Please check out our white board as to what each class is transforming.

Jump Jam fitness programme continues to be extremely popular. One student has been invited to trial for the next Jump Jam DVD. This is very exciting.

Kaihautu Program continues to be successful for our students. Increased communication including a weekly newsletter has been a good tool for whanau and the school community.

Kapakaka uniforms are on hold until next year. Funds have been raised but we don’t want to purchase until we know the sizing of the new group.

We are in the process of finding a new Kapahaka Tutor, due to Larn Wilkinson having many outside and whanau commitments, he is no longer an option.

Electives are very positive. New whanau involvement bringing new ideas and smaller groups have been very helpful.

A review of Junior Discovery has been undertaken with student voice helping to decide on the modified programme. A new roster is in place with student engagement being the focus.

The NED Show was well received and the key message of - Never Give Up, Encourage Others and Do Your Best shared. Yoyos sold like hot cakes. We will have this show again in a year or two.

Teacher aides are using many different strategies to motivate below and well below students. We look forward to the achievement outcomes for this group of students.

Miss T- student teacher in room 5 is near completion of her practicum. This is her final practicum and involves sole charge of the classroom. A huge thank you to Briar for coaching and mentoring this student with great knowledge and enthusiasm.

Mrs G is leading Room 9. As part of her Teacher Refresher Course, Jo is teaching, being viewed with formal feedback and viewing other teachers at school.

The mentoring side of ALL has come to a conclusion. Briar is starting to compile a report on our inquiry in readiness to share at our focus day in September. We have graduated my Year 4 students and I start with a new group next week.

Maths week run by Nik Laing across the school was massive! Children were hooked and enjoyed the daily challenges. Our thanks to Nik for the huge time and effort on making this so exceptional.





Six children have been selected to have a calf at Alan Scott’s farm. They will attend 3 days a week in readiness for calf club day later next term. We appreciate the support of Murphy’s buses, who are allowing children to travel to the farm at no cost.

Camp and Tent City information has gone out to whanau. Adults who wish to stay have been given a Police Vet form. Planning of both events will come under the senior school DP job description.

Whanau Engagement     

Cup Cake Day was extremely well received. Our whanau baked up a storm for the SPCA- raising over $200.00 The Mike Scadden evening was cancelled due to lack of numbers.

Reading Together with Nik Laing was postponed for this term due the business of whanau.

A school disco is planned for the 3rd of September. Team East Whanau are leading this; with staff support.

A Health Survey is out in the school community. Feedback on the outcomes of this will be reported to the BOT next month.

ICT A review of ICT is currently underway. This will inform the Board what devices we currently own, what is currently useful in classroom and the impact of a possible new learning tool would have on student achievement.

Senior Resource Room-Matt Walker Builders have completed this job. An increase of approximately 20% is expected due to the damage under the cladding.

Ross will paint this area during the school holidays.

Leak by Room One-Matt Walker and Kell Garrett have remedied this area. They have emptied the down pipes and added an overflow system. We have not noted any water since this has happened.

Boiler and Radiator-David Dixon has had the boiler removed. He will donate money to the school as payment. The sale of the radiators went towards camp 2016.

School Pool-Our aim is to complete the pool paint/railings over the holiday period allowing for an earlier opening of the pool next term, weather depending.

Staffroom Zip-A slow drip has caused significant damage under the sinkrequiring a new hot water cylinder and shelving. The zip itself has needed repairs which have taken some time to source.

Newmont The Board has been in contact with Newmont about future funding. We will let you know any information as it comes to hand. Phil Salmon the Education Officer from Newmont to spoke at assembly on Monday and then in each classroom about the daily blasting. Staff and students appreciated receiving this information.
