Best of CSU is a Rocky Mountain Student Media special publication featuring the results of our annual survey highlighting the best places to eat, drink, play and shop in Fort Collins. This is the 32nd edition featuring the results of the 2021 survey. Thank you to the 1,349 people who took the survey.

Kadyn Thorpe, Ethan Dvorak, Christine Moore-Bonbright

From Your Editor The year 2021 was the evil twin of 2020. There were ups and there were downs, but in the end, I think everyone learned a valuable lesson: Life is short. Don’t waste your time and energy on things you don’t like. Spend your time living your life to the fullest. Visit new places, make new memories and most importantly enjoy the little things. In this edition of Best of CSU, we have focused on the good in 2021. The best places to get food, the best CSU organizations, the best places to treat yourself, the best everything. We don’t want to look back at 2021 and think of only the pandemic, we want to think of 2021 as the year we realized the best thing to do in life is to enjoy it. Go out and make more memories, and this edition is the best place to start. 2021 marks the year people found their voices, especially when they are talking about things they love. With over 1,000 responses to our community survey, you wanted your voices heard and we heard them. Thank you for supporting not only our magazine, but also all the businesses in Fort Collins. Now, sit back and enjoy the winners for 2021’s Best of CSU.

Welcome to Fort Collins

Best of CSU Fun Facts

By Kadyn Thorpe As Colorado’s fourth-largest city, there’s no surprise that Fort Collins is voted as one of the best places to live in the United States. Whether you’re here attending Colorado State University to get your degree or building your life for years to come, there is no better place to be. Established in 1864, at the base of the Rocky Mountain Foothills, Fort Collins, Colorado, is currently home to over 600 restaurants and 24 craft breweries. With 300 days of sunshine a year, Fort Collins is loaded with over 200 hiking and biking trails. With all the beautiful trails positioned through Fort Collins, it’s obvious why it’s been voted the sixth safest city for bicyclists as well as the eighth most fitness-friendly city in 2021. With national breweries, such as Odell and New Belgium located in town, beer enthusiasts have made the trip to Fort Collins to indulge in drinking their favorite beers right where they’re made. Visit Horsetooth Reservoir in the summer and spend the day waterskiing and sun tanning. Take a day to wander through the shops in Old Town and try one of the beloved local restaurants. With so much to do, there is never a dull moment when you’re in Fort Collins. In 1870 Fort Collins welcomed the opening of the land-grant institution: Colorado State University. The tree-filled campus has continued to grow. Today, CSU has been recognized as “one of the Top Campuses Worth Traveling for,” by TripAdvisor.

Located right in the heart of Fort Collins, CSU, is currently home to over 33,000 students. Known as one of the nation’s leading research institutions, CSU has planted their roots in Fort Collins and the Ram’s spirit reaches beyond the campus. Alumni, students, faculty, staff and family gather to support their favorite college football team in Canvas Stadium or participate in the orange-out basketball game in Moby Arena. CSU has been dedicated to supporting local communities since the beginning. Cans Around the Oval and School is Cool are outreach programs started by CSU. Cans Around the Oval has become the largest annual food drive for the Food Bank of Larimer County. CSU students collect cans and monetary donations to help raise awareness of hunger in America. School is Cool began in 1991 and is currently a blessing to many students in Poudre School District. School is Cool provides grade-specific school supplies and backpacks to students based on need. With every beautiful scene Fort Collins provides and the community created by the university, it’s hard to think about being anywhere else. Take a stroll through CSU’s beautiful campus and flower gardens or take the afternoon and spend it seeing what this city has to offer. Fort Collins is just waiting to be explored.

The Legend of Nashville Hot Chicken By Kadyn Thorpe

Nashville hot chicken has been sweeping the nation since the early 2000s. But what exactly is Nashville hot chicken? In the 1930s, wanting revenge on her boyfriend for cheating on her, a woman in Nashville coated her buttermilk fried chicken in unbearable amounts of cayenne pepper, or so she thought. Instead of giving her boyfriend a spicy surprise, she gave him a business idea. That is when

16 | Best of CSU Spring 2022

Nashville hot chicken got its start. The difference between Southern fried chicken and Nashville hot chicken is right in the name. The “hot” in Nashville hot chicken represents the surge of spice that fills your mouth when you bite in. There are different variations of spices depending on what hot chicken joint you’re going to, but the one spice that will always be there is cayenne pepper. It was the original spice after all.

Through the years as the recipes have been improved and improvised, hot chicken started growing in popularity, starting in Nashville and sprouting up all around the United States. People couldn’t get enough of the heat, so much so that there is a Music City Hot Chicken Festival, where people gather to celebrate the creation of Nashville’s most beloved culinary traditions: Nashville hot chicken.

Why You Should Join a Campus Organization

Involv ing Advis t tmen n i o p Ap

! y a d o T

By Kadyn Thorpe Whether you’re an incoming freshman or a fifth-year senior, there is no reason that you shouldn’t be attached to one of the on-campus organizations. There are 475 student organizations located right on our campus, which gives students 475 opportunities to find something they love. Let’s say the odds are probably in your favor. We wanted to give you a couple of reasons why joining these organizations will not only help you now, but it will also help you in the future. Plus, won’t joining an organization and getting out there be better than sitting and binging Netflix all day? For starters once you find the organization that is just right for you, you’ll have access to people who share your interest. Especially as an incoming student, it can be hard making friends your first year in college. Joining an organization will help your social circle grow. If friends are not what you’re looking for then use joining an on-campus organization as a tool for you to network. There are professional organizations all over that help people grow their resumes and their portfolios. Joining these organizations will help you network and be more comfortable when applying for jobs after graduation. All these organizations will help you prepare yourself for life after graduation. Whether you are joining a sorority or a fraternity or wanting to become a DJ at KCSU, you will

still learn valuable lessons that you can take into the real world with you. If you’re a “Jack of all trades, master of none,” type of person, an on-campus organization could be a great place for you to find what you really enjoy doing. Finally become an “expert” in something that you’ve always found interesting. If being an “expert” doesn’t interest you and you don’t want to commit to one organization, do multiple. Don’t stretch yourself too thin though you still need to do your schoolwork and graduate. Remember why you’re here. If the growing social circle, networking opportunities and real-life experience doesn’t interest you much, how about the fact that you can find out more about yourself when you join an organization?

It’s almost like joining an on-campus organization is the best thing you could do not only for your future endeavors but also for your personal growth. See what we did there? Feel free to hop on RamLink to browse the hundreds of student organizations we have here on campus. Apartment Necessities of 2022

1

2

Coffee or Bar Cart If you’ve run out of space on your countertops, try out a coffee or bar cart. This trend is as simple as getting a functioning cart and adding all the fixings. Not only does it give your apartment a creative amenity, but it also provides you with some more storage space. It’s the best of both worlds.

Second Hand Decorations Thrifting is all the rage these days, but it’s not only clothing you should be looking for. Thrift stores have decorations galore. Find something you won’t be able to find anywhere else to bring a little spice into your apartment.

3

4

Plants Plants will not be going anywhere any time soon in the world of interior design. People use plants for so many different reasons, studies show that having plants in your home will boost your mood, reduce stress and clean the air. Without all the other benefits of having plants in your room, they are a good way to make your home a comfortable area.

Color Don’t be afraid to add some pops of color into your home. It’s your home after all, why not make it your favorite place to be. Add some accents of your favorite color here and there or dominate the house with a rainbow of colors, whatever speaks to you.

consumption of alcohol. It took more than forty years for the Board of County Commissioners to even allow 3.2 percent beer to be consumed in Fort Collins.

Colorado in of itself is one state that has been present in the beer game since the beginning. In the mid 1800s, brewers were making beer and delivering it to the miners that were mining for gold. As Denver grew the brewery scene grew with it. Rocky Mountain brewery opened and became the largest brewery between St. Louis and San Francisco. Not long after, Coors was established in Golden. In 1978 craft breweries started popping up throughout the state. Interest in craft beers took some time to ignite, but once it took off, Colorado was ahead of the game.

In the 1960s students attending Colorado State University were the ones to lead a movement that ended the prohibition. By the 1970s the cultural attitudes toward alcohol consumption in town changed. The attitude adjustments as well as the economic incentives were what pushed Fort Collins to be the beerfriendly city it is known as today.

Fort Collins had a slow emergence into the Colorado beer scene. When Fort Collins was established in 1872, people settling there were encouraged to stay away from alcohol, and in the late 1800s, the Board of County Commissioners prohibited the

So why did so many breweries choose to locate in Fort Collins when they were historically against alcohol? The answer is simple. Many breweries say that the Rocky Mountain spring water is the secret ingredient to their beer. Water is a very important

A plethora of breweries started opening in Fort Collins after the 1970s. Anheuser-Busch soon opened, followed by Odell which led to a spark in breweries interested in setting up shop in Fort Collins.

ingredient while brewing beer, and breweries sure use a whole lot of it. Breweries in Fort Collins specifically have started to reuse their water. Typically, breweries will take eight to ten barrels of water to make only one barrel of beer. New Belgium Brewing has started to recapture the water not used in the brewing process to then use as steam to power the brewery. Fort Collins now encourages breweries to establish their roots here because of the economic impact they have on the city. A large number of tourists come to Fort Collins to experience the breweries based here. There is everything you can ask for at these Fort Collins breweries. Odell, New Belgium and DC Oakes Brewhouse are all great big breweries that offer a large patio, food and your favorite craft beers right in one spot. With the variety of brewery options in Fort Collins there’s no surprise that Fort Collins is considered by some to be the Napa Valley of beer.

1. No shirt, no problem As the years have gone by, the size of shirts have begun to dwindle, so much so that the bra has become the new shirt. Before, wearing a bra as a shirt wouldn’t have been a thought, but people are turning more to a seductive sense of style. Pairing a bralette with more “boyish” clothing such as an oversized jacket or baggy jeans adds a little spice to your outfit. Invest in a nice sweat set that includes a matching bra and sweatpants. Whether you’re staying in or going out, a bra top is the thing that will make you look and feel great.

2. Sweats, sweats and sweats We all knew that sweats were not going anywhere anytime soon. Since the COVID-19 pandemic started in 2020, people have thrown out their uncomfortable jeans and exchanged them for a comfy pair of sweatpants. Since the clothing has been gaining popularity in the last couple of years, fashion designers have made it their mission to make sweats something that isn’t just a stay-at-home clothing piece. Now, you can find pants that are designed to be worn out on the town but are as comfortable as your favorite sweatpants. This is a trend we love to see, and I think we can all agree, this push toward comfort should never die out.

3. Platforms for the win Who wouldn’t want to be a couple of inches taller? No one. Platform shoes have been sweeping the fashion world by storm. You can’t go anywhere without seeing someone wearing a pair of Doc Marten boots

or some of variation of them. The chunky boot that everyone loves has inspired the new wave of popular shoes: the platform. Platform shoes are simply shoes with thick soles. The chunky boots that you can find anywhere you go; those are platform shoes. This trend, however, is not new, platform shoes have been used for thousands of years. This is a recycled trend that we are living for.

4. Bright and bold This trend took flight in the 1960s and has come back in waves, but in 2022 the fashion world is bringing it back and we could not be more excited. If you think of typical ‘60s clothing you see bright colors and bold patterns, which is exactly what mod is. Designers have taken the beloved bright patterns and put their own Y2K twist on it. You can find suits, sweats, T-shirts, coats, any article of clothing with mod print on it nowadays. Adding the mod twist to your wardrobe will take your closet to the next level.

5. Oversized everything Comfort is the one trend that has been taking over fashion for the last couple of years. Oversized everything, pants, jackets, shirts, shoes are all the rage in 2022. People said they were done with uncomfortable tight clothing and traded up. The oversized jackets have made a statement as the perfect accessory. Oversized items are used to show a light and carefree silhouette, which is the exact thing we all need right now. Fashion trends are ever changing, but there are some that are here to stay. Don’t be shy, try out some of the biggest fashion trends in 2022, or start your own. Fashion is about expressing yourself through clothes, if these trends don’t resonate with you, try something else. There will always be a way for you to express yourself no matter what’s trending.
