College Survival Guide 5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Starting College

The first year of college can be an adjustment. You’re on your own, away from your parents, friends you grew up with, and starting a whole new life. You want to find your place, enjoy your freedom, and just have fun. However, one thing many entering freshmen can lose sight of is that we are here to get a degree! Doing well in your college classes is important. The classes you take in college are getting you one step closer to your future career! It’s important to take it all in and do as well as you can. It can be tricky to balance it all, but here are some tips that might ease some of your stress. These are the 5 things I wish I knew before starting college:

Over these next four years, Canvas will become your best friend, or your worst enemy. If you utilize it correctly, it is a helpful tool to keep track of upcoming assignments and monitor your progress. Being on top of your Canvas calendar and writing important dates into your planner will relieve your stress immensely. Also be sure to check the class syllabuses, which will usually have a schedule of when in class assignments, projects, and exams are. This way, you’ll always know when things are due and won’t be scrambling at the last minute to get things done.

2

Just Go to Class!

Believe it or not, this can be a hard concept for many college students to grasp. Without having your parents to force you to get to school, it’s easy to decide to skip when you feel like it. Even if a class seems easy, just lecture, no in-class assignments, it is likely that your professor will prove you wrong. There will come a day when your professor will have a surprise in-class assignment, pop quiz, or mention important information about an exam, and you won’t be there for it. Just go to class, your grades will thank you.

3

Ask for Help When you Need it

If you’re struggling with a course, get help! Go to your professor’s office hours. It can seem scary and a bit awkward, but they will most likely be happy to help. You can also check out options for tutoring or link up with other students in your class for study sessions. Not asking for help with concepts you can’t fully grasp will only lead to a failing grade.

4

Get Involved

Getting involved in college is very important. It gives you experience to put on your resume and social connections. University involvement always looks good to future employers. While it can be hard to manage a lot of activities as an incoming freshman, it’s better to get immersed sooner rather than later.

5

6

Don’t Feel Pressure to Declare Your Major Right Away

Many first-year college students don’t know exactly what they want to do, and that is okay! Undeclared students at CSU receive academic advisors that will help them talk through their interests and discover what majors and potential career paths would be a good fit. There is also the option to take introductory courses within different majors to see firsthand what appeals to you. If you’re unsure of which route to go, don’t declare a major on a whim. Give yourself the time to explore your interests. It’ll save you from the dilemma of having to change your major a year or two into your college career.

To the Rams joining us in 2019: If I could go back to my first day at Colorado State and give myself one piece of advice, it would be simple: Smile more often. My time at CSU has been showered with failures and successes; it feels as though every ample academic achievement has been met with a similar scholastic misstep. The rolling tides of success and failure feel inevitable. One truth has helped me remain steadfast. This truth-- echoed by our nation’s sixteenth president-- has the capacity to give us all hope: “Success is going from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm.” President Lincoln was dedicated to this belief when he worked with Congress to help found our land-grant university. The hope was never that Americans could go forth without failure. The hope was that Americans would keep their enthusiasm in the face of failure. Rams, welcome to Colorado State University. We are honored to have you in our family. As we succeed and fail together, let us remain steadfast. Never forget to smile. Ben Amundson

Ram History & Traditions The “A” The “A” is found painted on the western hillside of Fort Collins. It’s there in honor of CSU’s original mascot: the Aggies.

CAM the Ram CAM’s name stands for “Colorado Agricultural and Mechanical” College (the university’s former name).

The Fight Song Fight on you stalwart RAM Team On to the goal Tear the (Opponent’s) line asunder As down the field we thunder. Knights of the Green and Gold, Fight with all your might. Fight on you stalwart RAM team! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! GO RAMS!

Alma Mater Hail to thee, our Alma Mater; Colorado State. Memories are everlasting of this place so great. May thy Green and Gold unite us, loyal ever be. Colorado State, our Alma Mater, Hail, all hail, to thee.

Ram Ruckus Ram Ruckus is the university’s official spirit squad. The idea of Ram Ruckus is to create pride in everything students do at CSU. Founded in 2012, it was created by students, for students to engage in student life at CSU, specifically athletics.

CSU Oval The Oval is the heart of the CSU campus. It was designed in 1909 as an aesthetically pleasing way to connect the main buildings on campus. Now, the Oval features historic buildings such as Johnson Hall, which was the original student center.

I love CSU Day! On April 18th, CSU students celebrate the university by wearing all green (a “green out”). Games and events are held on the LSC Plaza and the governor of Colorado signa a proclamation declaring April 18th “I love CSU Day!” across Colorado. Alumni are also encouraged to wear green and gold on this day. 16

For CSU students, the MAX location closest to the heart of campus is at the University Street Station.

Biking Fort Collins is a major biking city, and you can get just about anywhere on or off campus with a bike. If public transportation is not for you, invest in a bike, as it can help you get to class and beyond. Not to mention, it’s very eco-friendly, something Fort Collins is known for. Make sure you register your bike with the CSU Police Department (ten dollar fee) as soon as possible.

Orientation Guide 2019

There is no better place to go to school than Fort Collins. Fort Collins is a vibrant college town located just north of Denver with plenty to offer. It is abundant in local eateries, pubs, boutiques, outdoor activities, and sunshine. Here are a few of our favorite spots.

34

Horsetooth Reservoir

Old Town

Alleycat Coffee House

This 6.5-mile-long reservoir is located just 10 minutes outside of downtown and is a favorite recreation spot of many. At an elevation of 5,430 ft Horsetooth offers an array of hiking, camping, and water activities. It is the perfect outdoor escape.

Fort Collins’ historic downtown is always a lively place to hangout. With over 20 restored historical buildings, endless cafes, and boutiques, and constant events happening at all times of the year, Old Town is truly the heart of Fort Collins.

It’s no secret that the Alleycat is one of the most popular coffee shops for college students in Fort Collins. Their diverse menu and cool vibe draw people in to work on homework or just chill with friends.

Downtown Artery

Jessup Farm

The Downtown Artery is a two-story, 14,000-square-foot creative establishment that spans half a block in Downtown Fort Collins. It features a cafe/bar, whimsical nooks designed by local artists, a performance venue, a local creator’s retail emporium, and classrooms. There are always events happening at the Artery.

The Jessup Farm Artisan Village is a hidden gem of Fort Collins that many people still don’t know about. Located at the northern end of the Bucking Horse Community on Timberline, the unique renovated farmstead is a great place to get coffee, a bite to eat, or do some shopping.

The Shops at Foothills Located right on College Avenue, The Shops at Foothills is a convenient mall that offers department and chain stores, restaurants, and a movie theatre.

OUR STORY

OWNED BY

NoCo NOSH started when the national for-profit delivery services became too expensive for restaurants to afford. NoCo NOSH is a partnership of all of the best independent restaurants in the NoCo region that invested to create their own delivery service, which will charge restaurants less than half of what the national services (GrubHub/UberEats/DoorDash) charge. The local independent restaurants not only own the service but also oversee its daily operations.
