Dear Graduates:

letter from

our University President

JOYCE

MCCONNELL

4 | FALL 2020

Congratulations! On behalf of the entire CSU community, I am delighted to celebrate all of you and welcome you into the ranks of Colorado State University alumni! As we mark your achievements and this important milestone, I also want to recognize that this this past year has undoubtedly been among the most challenging of your academic career. Earning a degree always requires hard work and dedication. This past year, it has required more effort, more focus, and more motivation. And you did it. You will be able to recall the resolve it took to earn your degree during a global pandemic. You will be able to draw on this experience and what it has taught you when new challenges arise. Your perseverance has put you on a path to success; your resilient spirit will provide you with the momentum to carry you forward. You’ve earned your degree in a moment when our world desperately needs you. As you step into the larger world, this is your time to shine. Your ideas, your energy, and your undaunted spirit can provide a spark to light the way ahead. But the learning does not stop here. The path of discovery is never ending, so commit yourself to being a lifelong learner. And when you move on to the next phase of your life, know that you always will be a Colorado State University Ram, a member of a community that extends across this nation and around the world. And if there’s one thing I’ve learned about this community, it’s that we have a powerful, shining, bold spirit – one of hope and optimism. We have faced and overcome challenges; as one of the top public research universities in our nation, we will continue to do so. And you always will be a part of the CSU story. We are excited to see where your path will take you.

Congratulations!

to all the Fall 2020 graduates and your parents, families and support network for all of your hard work and dedication! We are proud of all you and your families have accomplished!

6 | FALL 2020

2020 – 2021

Dear Graduates, Congratulations on graduating! A small population in our world hold a college degree and you have now joined the group that completed the hard work to do so. I hope you take some time to celebrate your accomplishments during your career at Colorado State University. I am not writing this letter in an attempt to give you cliché advice that we’ve all heard plenty of, rather, I’m here to offer you some points of wisdom passed on to me that could be helpful to consider while you take on your future endeavors. 1. 2020 has been hard. Make it easier on yourself by using the resources that are granted to you. I’m sure you’ve been in a class where the professor offered additional help in their office hours and no one in the class went. Or, maybe when an office on campus advertised their services that seemed interesting, you never followed up. It is not too late to take advantage of those resources right now! Reach out to the Career Center and have them review your resume. They also offer students and recent grads practice interviews. If you had a legal encounter during your time in college, go to Student Legal Services and see what your options are. Email a professor and ask for guidance on finding a job or going to graduate school. Set yourself up for success and use the opportunities that are available to you. 2. Recognize that you did not get to this point all by yourself. I hope you all take some time to reflect on who helped you get to the point you’re at right now. Thank them and show them appreciation for their guidance, assistance, and support. Keep in mind, now you can be the person to make the difference for others, offer guidance where you can and volunteer to help when the opportunity presents itself. 3. And for my third piece of advice, I’d like to offer one of my favorite quotes. “Those who stand for nothing, fall for anything.” – Alexander Hamilton. In your future endeavors, stand for something. Use your passions to stand for improvement, progress, and positive change. Do not go into a project, job, or opportunity without focusing on how you personally can make it better than how you found it. The people that drive positive change are not always the most liked at the table, but they are often the ones to get things done. It is my hope that you find at least one of these pieces of advice helpful. Again, congratulations on your accomplishments and I wish you luck on your future endeavors. All the best, Hannah Taylor Student Body President 2020-2021

The environment at Colorado State Univerisity has tremendously evolved within the past four years. With new buildings on campus and a new president, graduating seniors have seen it all. Here are some of the major changes graduating seniors have been a part of:

Opening of Canvas Stadium

Construction on Canvas Stadium began in 2015 and finished just as this year’s graduating seniors arrived on campus. The first football game was held on Aug. 26, 2017, and the Rams beat Oregon State 58-27.

Opening of the Nancy Richardson Design Center The Nancy Richardson Design Center opened in January 2019. It’s named after CSU alumna Nancy Richardson, who graduated from CSU in 1982 with a degree in interior design. It’s

8 | FALL 2020

open to all CSU students and has been a great place for students to collaborate.

Tearing down Aylesworth Hall

Graduating seniors remember this building as classroom space, however, this building has had an evolving history on campus. Initially a residence hall from 1958-1970, Aylesworth became the go-to space for various departments during times of need. The building was torn down by the start of this academic year to make way for a new residence hall community.

Welcoming a new CSU president

Joyce McConnell became the new CSU president in Fall 2019. This marked the end of former president Tony Frank’s 11-year presidency. McConnell is the first woman president in CSU’s history. Frank is currently the chancellor of the CSU System.

Transitioning to online and hybrid classes

While this is a major shift across many college campuses, this sudden change had a major impact on this class of graduating seniors. The transition, which happened in March, has defined graduating seniors’ final year at CSU. Not only have they had to spend their last year in online and hybrid classes, it’s unclear what spring graduation will look like or what job opportunities after graduation will be available.

Q: What can families do to help their student/graduate with their job search in this turbulent economy?

Job Market

Questions & Answers With many people losing their jobs due to the spread of COVID-19, CSU families are understandably expressing concern over their graduates’ chances of finding internships and full-time employment following graduation this December. Although it is true that the job market has become tighter, there are strategies, resources, and people available to help CSU graduates shine, even in this turbulent economy. The CSU Career Center is open virtually, ready to assist students and alumni with all their professional development questions. While some uncertainty is a part of everyday life in the best of times, our current situation brings up even more uncertainty and anxiety. Since none of us have control over what will happen and how long this will last, it’s best to focus on the things graduates can control. For example, they can control their own preparation and behaviors while exploring various career paths. Graduates should ask themselves to decide on their overall goals for career exploration, and then to keep their focus on next steps, and next steps after that, and so on. They need to keep moving forward. They can continue researching different career paths, talking with alumni about their work, searching online for new grad opportunities, revising their

16 | FALL 2020

resume, tailoring their cover letters, and practicing interviewing. Recent grads can always reach out to the Career Center for support. These actions will give them a greater sense of control and certainty in this uncertain time. Here are some common questions we are receiving, followed by our recommendations:

Q: What do we know about the job market?

A: The restrictions on movement and gatherings have had a direct and dire economic impact on hotels and lodging, event venues, restaurants, travel, tourism, and non-essential goods such as floristry and jewelry, to name a few. All industries will be impacted by COVID-19 in different ways. Although we cannot know the long-term ramifications or implications at this time, the future includes industries that may thrive or emerge as a result of this crisis. We encourage students/alum to stay informed. It is also important to remember that in all economies, there are businesses that thrive. Some stable and hiring industries include delivery companies, technology companies, organizations that are online-based or can move online, health care, and public services. Therefore, job seekers should target organizations that provide necessary goods and services over organiza-

tions that are not essential. Since other candidates will be doing the same, students/graduates are encouraged to take some necessary steps to stand out among the competition. They will need a polished resume and cover letter, a professional LinkedIn profile, ideas on how to build relationships and connect with employers, job search efficiency, and excellent virtual interviewing skills. They can easily practice their virtual interviewing skills using the tool Big Interview on the Career Center website. The CSU Career Center is available to help them with all these aspects of their job search! Students and graduates can find us at career.colostate.edu to access virtual drop-in hours, or by calling the Career Center Front Desk at 970-491-5707, where they can leave a message and receive a call back to discuss their questions. They can also ask questions and/or get connected to resources using the Chat feature in the lower right hand side of the Career Center website.

Q: Should students and graduates currently searching for internships or jobs pause their effort?

A: There are still opportunities to find internships and full time jobs, although it may require more tenacity, patience, and flexibility than it did a few

months ago. To increase the chances of landing a position in this economy, job seekers should: • Be open-minded about the kinds of job they are willing to accept. It may be that their starter job is not their dream job, but it can help pay the rent, grow their professional network, and add new skill sets to their resume. Then, when they can pursue a more desirable position, they will be ready. • Identify the Career Competencies they have learned in college that will be desirable to employers across all industries—be sure to include those on resumes and cover letters, and be prepared to give specific examples in interviews. These Career Competencies include: Critical Thinking/ Problem Solving, Verbal/Written Communications, Inclusive Teamwork, Digital Proficiency, Leadership, Career Development, Global Context, Personal Accountability, Self-Reflection, and Creativity. • Conduct an efficient job search. Since things can change very rapidly in this environment, job seekers should reach out to organizations of interest to confirm that they are still hiring. Employers who want to recruit CSU students and alumni post on Handshake, so students/alum should always start their internship/job search with that site for postings. Normal

A: There are definitely ways that a family can support a student’s job search during this time! Here are a few: • Be supportive and remember that this economy is not the graduates fault. It may take longer for them to put a plan in place due to circumstances beyond their control. • Help them build connections with potential employers. People who prioritize building relationships as an integral part of their job search will be much more likely to land jobs than those who don’t. Assist them in brainstorming all the possible people they can contact to build professional relationships, including peers in classes, student organizations, CSU cultural centers, professors, staff, and alumni. Be sure to also include family members, friends, neighbors, coaches, and former teachers. As people begin to establish some type of routine in this “new normal,” having a conversation with you about their career path and their advice for you could be a nice break for them and very informative for you. • Help them to establish a quiet place to work on their resume and cover letter, build their LinkedIn profile, search for positions, and have virtual conversations, including online interviews. • Encourage students to reach out to CSU’s excellent campus resources, such as the Career Center. Q: Would you recommend a gap year for students graduating in December as a way to help shield them from potential under-employment? A: Taking a gap year may make sense for some graduates, whereas others may need or want to land a job. Both options are viable, depending on the individual circumstances. Gap year options can help students/graduates develop additional skills sets, experiences, and knowledge. Options include: • Taking free online courses available through providers like Coursera, edX, Udacity, and Codecademy • Developing independent projects that expand a student’s skillsets and demonstrate initiative

• Volunteering remotely with local organizations • Service learning organizations such as Peace Corps, City Year, or Americorps • Engaging in workshops and events with the CSU Alumni Association • All of the above! The more graduates continue to build new and marketable skills, the more competitive they will be when they return to the job market. Q: How can graduates and families stay optimistic about the job search during this time? A: Remember that this won’t last forever. The economy will eventually rebound, and students will have more professional options. In the meantime, they are adding to their experiences and skillsets by learning resiliency, online collaboration, and new digital platforms—skills they should mention to prospective employers! During this time when so much feels out of control, students should focus on what is in their control and resolve to take action. For example, they can reach out to the Career Center for help, and commit to following through on the advice. In all economies, there are people who flourish, and we will do everything we can to strategize individual job search plans so that those who flourish are CSU students and alumni. More Career Center services available to all students and those who have graduated within the last year: career. colostate.edu/student-virtual-career-services. Q: Besides the Career Center, are their additional resources to assist with their job search? A: You will be joining a network of 232,000 living alumni. We encourage you to join the CSU Alumni Association LinkedIn group and connect with Rams in your hometown through the CSU Alumni Association’s Ram Networks. In addition to CSU Career Center support, the Alumni Association also hosts a number of free Career and Professional Development Workshops to support students in acquiring skills for the job search. Additionally, departments across the University have put together a comprehensive list of resources for graduates as they enter into a world of uncertainty. We want you to know that your University is behind you through this next life transition.

150 YEARS

CONGRATULATIONS Fall 2020 Graduates! Emilio Chavez

AT COLORADO STATE UNIVERSITY

T

he Class of 2020 will be celebrating graduation not only in CSU’s 150th year of operation but also in quarantine. It was unique that their last semester has been completed with a hybrid schedule system that has us all experiencing college differently. They could very well be one of the last classes to have experienced college the way it’s always been. To say the least, things have changed a lot in the last year than in a while, but nothing can change the fact that for 150 years, students have been proud to be a CSU Ram. As a university full of tradition and a unique history, take a moment to reflect on all Colorado State has been through in its 150 years. In 1870, six years before Colorado even achieved statehood, Fort Collins became home to our state's land-grant school and Colorado Agricultural College was born. Starting out it was very uncomplicated; one president and two faculty members were all it took to get the ball rolling. Its mission has always been straightforward, to be committed to excellence. On this anniversary I would say it is easy to

20 | FALL 2020

see that standard is still being upheld. In the 150 years of operation there have been many changes. When it first opened to students, CSU had one building, Old Main, located on the Oval. Before the cannon blast that currently signals a touchdown, they used to ring the Old Main bell to signify victory. You can no longer see the building as it was lost to arson in 1970, but when you go to the stadium you can still see the bell that once hung on the building. Many wonder why the switch to a cannon occurred. The cannon is actually our longestrunning tradition. Because we are a land-grant university, it is required that we have military presence, otherwise known as ROTC. Therefore, it only made sense to honor that part of tradition with a cannon blast at the game. When it comes to a football tradition and rivalry that goes back farther than the Rocky Mountain Showdown, there is only one thing, Border Wars, a.k.a, the battle for the Bronze Boot. CSU faced off against the Wyoming Cowboys for the first time in 1899. In 1968 the Bronze Boot trophy

was inaugurated. It was a boot that was worn in Vietnam by a former CSU ROTC assistant professor and was thus given to the team that won. CSU won the boot for the first time in five years this season with a 34-24 win over Wyoming. CAM the Ram is by far one of the cutest mascots this school has seen and a student favorite. But CSU did not officially become the Rams until 1959. The university had a few mascots, one favorite being Peanuts the bulldog and another, Teddy the black bear cub. Neither stuck and eventually the ram was adopted to represent CSU. In the early years of CSU one of the first classes were 25 strong, now total enrollment reaches over 33,000. It was a tiny campus spanning 30 acres. The current campus covers 4,773 acres. A lot has changed in the past 150 years and so we recognize this anniversary and representation of where we came from and where we are now. So, congratulations graduates and remember, you are a part of something great.

Pros & Cons TO GRAD SCHOOL T

he uncertainty of the future has many people falling short of knowing exactly what they hope to do or dealing with the limited amount of opportunities in the field they desire. This slight standstill of the job market has many wondering if there are other options. Being a recent graduate gives you that slight advantage when it comes to what options are still readily available. Continuing your education into graduate school in certificate or master’s degree programs might not be something you want to actively pursue when you’re just making it out from your undergrad, but it’s an option that, especially in today’s economic climate, could be the best decision to help you compete in the job market.

PROS

Building Your Resume

Expensive

CONS

With each completion of a degree, your credibility grows. Many leadership positions require an advanced degree. For some fields, there are much fewer opportunities without a graduate degree. If an advanced degree isn’t required, do some research to determine how much it would be worth in your field.

The cost of graduate school is much like an undergrad, but those four years of undergrad cost is squished into two years. Building up one’s debt can be worth it if you understand it and have the plan to pay it back. Try checking out the average salary for someone in your future field with an advanced degree.

In graduate school, you’ll gain increasingly specialized knowledge in your field, while also improving your personal and professional skills. If you are passionate about your field of study, this could be really enjoyable. The research and experiences could be additional resume builders.

Some schools limit how many students they accept into their graduate programs to limit class sizes and increase exclusivity of their program. Similar to getting into your undergraduate degree program from high school, there are requirements from college that must be met to get into their program.

Building relationships with professors is nothing new to recent grads. Networking with these experts in an even closer setting than many of the undergraduate classes. Your classmates, too, could likely be your future peers or help you get into the field or company you want to. Always be nice.

After just completing your undergrad degree, the idea of continuing to go to classes might not sound so attractive. It is a commitment of additional years of school. Your courses, too, will require a higher level of commitment for it’s more advanced coursework. Be sure you’re willing to commit.

RAM and HISTORY traditions alma mater

the Oval The Oval was designed in 1909 as a way to connect the main campus buildings. Surrounding the Oval are historic buildings including Johnson Hall, which was the original student center, and the Music Building which was built as a library. It remains the heart of Colorado State University and a favorite of all students.

fight song Fight on you stalwart Ram Team, On to the goal! Tear the (Opponent’s) line asunder, As down the field we thunder. Knights of the green and gold, Fight with all your might! Fight on you stalwart Ram Team, Fight! Fight! Fight!

Hail to thee, our Alma Mater, Colorado State. Memories are everlasting of this place so great! May thy Green and Gold unite us, loyal ever be. Colorado State, our Alma Mater, Hail, all hail, to thee.

i love CSU day Cam the Ram CAM’s name stands for “Colorado Agriculture and Mechanical” College (the university's formal name).

28 | FALL 2020

On April 18, students at CSU celebrate their University with a “green out.” Games and events are held on the Lory Student Center Plaza and the governor of Colorado signs a proclamation declaring April 18 I Love CSU Day across Colorado! Alumni are also encouraged to show their Ram Pride and wear green and gold.

"history in color" Being a Ram here at CSU means dressing in green and gold for game day, but CSU’s colors used to be pumpkin orange and alfalfa green back when the university’s students were the Aggies.

Keeping in touch

with your friends Graduating from school comes with plenty of celebrations. Potentially being done with your academic career for the rest of your life can bring on some mixed emotions. You made it through, but looking back, you made a lot of connections with people who you may never see again. With a University as large as CSU and so many out-of-state students, there is a big possibility of these connections being cut off due to distance and new busy schedules. Keeping these relationships alive seems like a no-brainer now with so many social media sites and communication ways. But a meme or video every day turns into every week or month. These tips for keeping in touch with your soon to be long-distance friends could keep your friendships from fading.

Make the first move, even if it’s been a while

This could be applicable for high school friends or even people you’ve lost touch with since COVID began. Reaching out is the first step to building up that bond with someone you haven’t talked to in a while. If they mean something to you, then it’s worth a shot. There’s always the possibility that they could be your next close friend because you never know how people have changed.

Call each other

Whether it’s an exact time every week like your mom tried to assign you when you moved out for your freshman year of college, or it’s a quick call on your way to work, just calling to say hi can have a huge impact on building and keeping up that friendship. This is often shied away from with our increasingly digital and non-verbal world but calling can be quick and you get to hear your friends voice with real emotion, and sarcasm.

Text exciting details of your day

This is a much easier activity when you’re closer with a friend, as it’s difficult to text that guy from class that the best part of your day was seeing a dog walking outside your window, but with COVID still being an issue, this is definitely acceptable. Small things do make people’s day and if eating a creamcheese pizza reminds you of that friend you went to Cosmo’s with, then maybe you should tell them.

Make it a priority

Figuring out who really matters to you and who you want to stick in your life after graduation doesn’t have to be an impactful and dramatic project. The ability to keep in touch with people you care to will happen naturally. Just don’t forget about the people you care about. You have to make people you care about a priority in your life to keep them.

a guide for managing unamanageable times

ADULTING 101

Congrats, you’re officially a college grad and are on your way to the real world. Despite the peculiarity of the world we’re living in right now, this is an exciting time and the current climate we live in does not change the amazing achievement of graduating. It’s normal to be nervous and unsure moving forward because there are so many changes coming your way. Even living on your own in college can’t completely prepare you for what being a true adult comes with. Chances are, though, you may never feel like a “true adult.” My own great-grandmother in her 98th year still felt like she was winging it. Taking it one step at a time is the best you can do. Here is a short list of changes that will be coming your way—a quick guide as to what you’ll face with these new “true adult” responsibilities.

Life becomes more expensive

The many types of insurance

Success takes time

While this concept is a general idea of getting older, there are a lot of things that are suddenly not at your disposal anymore since you no longer qualify as a student. The amount of money that you are able to save on just about anything by showing your student ID or registering with your @rams.colostate.edu email is significant. Some student checking accounts with certain banks will expire and you could be charged monthly fees for simply having an account with your bank. Subscription services, like Amazon, that you originally registered for using your student discount could also be discontinued. There could be so many changes in simple expenses, so sake sure to read up on every and all of these unfortunate possibilities.

Insurance is not typically thought of as a fun word. It’s associated with filling out forms, spending money, and a lot of [contingencies?] that can’t be skipped over (even if you want to). The great thing about this, though, is that most full-time jobs cover some form of health insurance and beyond. The important thing to understand is that, even if your first job doesn’t match up to your dream pay, the benefits can oftentimes compensate for it. There are so many other types of insurance to consider if going for a long-term career at a company. Life-insurance and disability coverage is not something that is appealing to think about, but you should be aware of its existence and what it could do to benefit you and your goals.

Everyone wants to jump into their dream job while they’re young. No one needs the reminder that you have to start at the bottom to get to where you want to be—that you shouldn’t lose enthusiasm and that you must work hard to get to the top. College students are used to the idea of starting over and this class understands adapting to succeed. Getting to where you want to be takes time, so make sure you use that time well. Don’t chase anything that isn’t serving your future. The reason that you’re working—the reason that you went through college—is to make your life better. As long as you’re still learning, growing, developing— you’re on your way to success.
