letter to graduates From CSU President Tony Frank

“Your achievement comes as a result of years of hard work, long hours, and a persistent focus on this goal-so now is truly your time to celebrate.” Dear Graduates, Congratulations on your upcoming commencement! Your achievement comes as a result of years of hard work, long hours, and a persistent focus on this goal – so now is truly your time to celebrate. This is a great occasion for you and for Colorado State University, so on behalf of the all the faculty, staff, and alumni of CSU, I just want to say that we are enormously proud of you and what you’ve accomplished. While this may mark an end to one chapter of your life, it also marks the beginning of the next – and there is good reason to be optimistic about what is to come. Countless financial analysts continue to demonstrate that a college degree ultimately has a greater payoff than a similar investment in the stock market. The Brookings Institution calculates the return on investment on a student loan at 15 percent annually. College graduates earn on average $1

million more over their working lives than people without a bachelor’s degree. In other words, you’ve made a great investment in yourself and your future. But you can’t measure the value of a college degree in economic terms alone. During your time at Colorado State, you’ve faced up to new challenges and experiences. You probably had some classes you can barely remember and others that transformed the way you think about the world. The person you were when you first came to CSU may seem very different to you from the person you are today – and the person you will become as you go one with your life and put your education to work. After all, the most important payoff from your investment of time and money is what you actually do with the skills, knowledge and credentials you’ve acquired at Colorado State. Our world needs you – your ideas, your passion, and your commitment. The world is waiting for you. We have

problems that need fixing. How do we feed a world whose population is expected to grow to 9 billion in the decades ahead? How do we safely and sustainably meet the world’s energy needs? How do we combat the rapid spread of disease in a world that seems to get smaller day by day? How do we move beyond the divisions and “isms” that hold us back and find the common ground that will allow our society and our world to move forward? How do we help instill hope and a sense of real potential in younger generations that see these challenges coming their way? As educated women and men, these challenges are now yours. The solutions won’t be easy or obvious – if they were, my own generation would have solved these problems a long time ago. But I have full confidence that those solutions are within your reach. CSU was founded nearly 150 years ago, thanks to a signature from President Abraham

Lincoln that authorized the creation of Land Grant universities. (I couldn’t pass up one last chance to pass on a Lincoln quote to you.) On December 3, 1863, in his now famous annual address to Congress, he spoke these words: “The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and so we must rise with the occasion. As our situation is new, we must think anew and act anew.” You are leaving CSU to venture off into the new – and that path is yours to clear and build. Your graduation is, indeed, a beginning. Make the most of it, and take on your future with a sense of optimism and the confidence that you’ve made an outstanding investment in your future. Congratulations again to the outstanding graduates of the Class of 2016! Dr. Tony Frank President

Networking Step 1: Identify Professionals in Your Field

person, you may want to bring a polished resume to the interview. Consider asking the professional to review your resume and offer you feedback. If you need help with a resume, consider the CSU Career Center.

Ask follow up questions latfield who might be willing to chat with er and keep them posted on how things are going through brief email updates! you.

Step 2: Call Professionals and Request Meeting(s)

Resume Tips

Career Fairs can be daunting events for job seekers. However, being prepared can ease a lot of the nerves that are associated with the event. One way that students can be prepared is by feeling confident in their resume. Here are some key tips to help make your resume stand out.

1. Don’t use a template.

The majority of students use a template so if you use one you simply won’t stand out.

2. Identify tangible deliverables

Example: Served as a TA to a class of 300 students.

3. Make it relevant

Focus on what you have done in your past and how you have done it. Use action verbs to describe what you have done.

4. Have updated contact information 5. Proofread

Nothing makes you stand out more, and not in a good way, than a bunch of

typos and grammatical errors.

Dressing for Success Yes, you are being judged. In the world of job interviews, a neat, professional appearance goes a long way in making a positive first impression, and like it or not, your physical appearance has a bearing on your success, even if that’s not a requirement in the job description. Here are a few things to think about: • The interviewer will decide within the first 10 seconds of meeting you whether you are right for the job. First impressions matter! • Nonverbal cues (such as what you wear) have four times more impact than verbal cues (such as what you say) on the impression you make. Keep in mind that what is appropriate dress for some industries may not work in others. An interview with a conservative business firm likely requires different clothing choices than one with a software developer or ad agency.

Where to get it

Now that you know what not to wear, you need to obtain it. You may already own the right stuff, or you can borrow certain items. For students without the financial means to purchase clothing, help is available. Jeremy Podany, director of The Career Center at CSU, and his family established the Podany Interview Attire Fund, which provides up to $250 per student for approximately four students per semester. It’s open to all students, and special consideration is given to those who identify as first-generation, underrepresented ethnic and racial minorities,

farewell to hughes By Chad Deustchman

“What better way to go out than with a win at Hughes.” 11:48 p.m. It was 12 minutes before midnight on Saturday Nov. 19 when the final whistle blew at Hughes Stadium. It was 12 minutes before midnight that CSU president Tony Frank shut down the lights of CSU football’s home since 1968. It was 12 minutes before midnight that fans rushed the field, giving their final farewell to the stadium that provided them with 49 years of cheers, tears and everything that falls in-between. Colorado State sent Hughes Stadium into the history books with one final 4931 win over New Mexico in front of 29,133 fans. The Rams had three 100-yard rushers for the first time in school history in Marvin Kinsey Jr. (129), Izzy Matthews (107) and Dalyn Dawkins (102). They kept the nation’s leading rushing attack in check for the majority of the night and became bowl eligible for the fourth consecutive season.

10 Graduation Guide | Fall 2016

All feats accomplished from a football standpoint took a backseat to sending Hughes off the right way. “Really just an awesome night tonight for our community, our University and for every Ram that’s ever witnessed a game (at Hughes), for any player that’s ever played,” CSU head coach Mike Bobo said after the game. “A lot of memories in this stadium. And I know I’ve only been here through two seasons, but we talked to our team all week about what kind of big responsibility we had…being the last game at Hughes Stadium.” Colorado State still has a looming matchup with San Diego State Nov. 26 and now a bowl game after that. But for the moment, the valediction of Hughes Stadium takes its rightful place on center stage. For the freshman that arrived on campus, their memories may be too few to really capture the magnitude of the last game at Hughes. But for the seniors,

for the players who have been through thick and thin at CSU, there is nothing more that could have been done to bring a more fitting end to Hughes Stadium. “What better way to go out than with a win at Hughes,” senior linebacker Kevin Davis said. “I know there’s a lot of memories here and a lot of people have really close connections with the stadium so it was awesome. To not only do it for ourselves to be bowl eligible, but for the community.” The community may be where Hughes held its greatest impact on the night, and overall. There would be no sellout, and many fans elected to not let a final game break the tradition of leaving at half, but those that did battle through 60 minutes of rosy cheeks and cold finger tips, they were rewarded. As fans rushed onto the field, taking the north end zone goal post for a joyride in the process, we are reminded of what Hughes Stadium means to Fort Collins.

Sitting on the outskirts of the city and away from the heart of CSU’s campus, Hughes is often an afterthought. Saturday night, Hughes’ impact was brought back to life, even if just for one frigid night. Nobody left cold though. “It was a pretty amazing scene there at the end of the game with everybody on the field shutting off the lights,” Bobo said. “I got to go up top and shoot the cannon. But just to sit up there and watch the people celebrating, enjoying the moment. Like I said at the beginning of the week, our part, my part and this team’s part, was to play the way that we needed to play to honor this stadium. It was good we came and played that way and it was great to see the fans and the alumni and everybody that loves Colorado State get to savor the moment on a really special night. Told our players all week, I said this place is special because of the memories CONTINUED ON PAGE 12

people have here watching football games. You’re the last memory that these fans are going to be able to see in Hughes Stadium, we need to put on a show and I thought we did tonight.” Hughes Stadium will forever be the house that Sonny Lubick built. It will always hold a special place in the hearts of Ram fans. The memories that are engraved into the concrete bleachers and dust bowl parking lots will never fade away. And after being there for 49 years of memories, Hughes Stadium gave Colorado State one last ride, one last memory, before the lights were shut down for good.

Dont miss the first game at our new Stadium!

Song/Video

Word of the Year

Ylvis “What Does the Fox Say”

“Selfie”

A pair of Norwegian brothers got this ridiculous song stuck in our heads because it seemed to be constantly playing throughout 2013. The video came out in September 2013 and now has over 590 million views as of April 2016. Did we ever actually find out what the fox says?

The Harlem Shake

Admit it: You either made one of these videos, or watched them constantly during 2013. Nobody can resist jumping up and dancing wildly when that beat drops. The video went viral in February 2013. By April, thousands of videos had been uploaded with over 1.21 billion views in total. The song also reached #1 on iTunes.

Miley Cyrus Wrecking Ball Video

You either love her or you hate her, but you can’t deny that Miley Cyrus made quite a statement in 2013. Who can forget the day the Wrecking Ball music video came out and the world saw Miley swinging naked from a giant wrecking ball. If the hair chopping and the VMAs charade didn’t showcase her transformation enough, this video surely did. The video was released in August 2013, and broke the Vevo record for the most views in the first 24 hours with an astonishing 19.3 million views. It also won Video of the Year at the 2014 VMAs and World’s Best Video at the 2014 World Music Awards.

Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook and every other social media app has fueled the selfie phenomenon. Whether you like the high angles or the mirror selfies, chances are you spent a lot of your time in 2013 taking pictures of yourself. According to Samsung, selfies make up 30% of the photos taken by people aged 18–24.

“YOLO”

Ah yes, the acronym you love to hate. YOLO, in case you didn’t know, means You Only Live Once! This motto was popularized in 2013 by the rapper Drake. It sounds cool when he says it, not so much when we say it. The phrase has been overused, but ultimately it has a positive message. People started saying it as a way to remember to live life to the fullest and take chances while you can. However, there was also a lot of criticism that the phrase was promoting reckless behavior.

Moment in History

Dance Craze Twerking

Miley also introduced us to 2013’s most popular dance craze: Twerking. If you don’t know what twerking is, (what cave have you been living in?), it is a sexually provocative dance move where you stick your butt out and shake it all around-it’s all in the hips and the booty. Twerking is popular in hip hop music videos. Miley Cyrus is known for flaunting her twerking skills at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards. Also, the word ‘twerking’ was the runner-up in the Oxford Dictionaries Word of the Year in 2013.

24 Graduation Guide | Fall 2016

Colorado Amendment 64

Colorado Amendment 64. Marijuana became legal in the Mile High state. I’ll be blunt: there is no need to weed through the facts on this one. Just ask your buds! Whether you do it or pot, I mean not, personal use of marijuana became a legal option for those over the age of 21. At first you couldn’t, but now you CANnabis.

Word of the Year

Video

“Bae”

Remember when this became a thing? Bae means “before anyone else.” It is a term of endearment that millennials like to call their significant other. In 2014, the word ‘Bae’ was used in 20% of American’s text messages. Will this trend stick around? Who knows what you’ll be calling your boo in the coming years.

“Turnt”

OK, who came up with this one? Here is a word-for-word definition of the word ‘Turnt’ in Urban Dictionary: “The most wonderful feeling in the world. Saught after by the biggest bosses and ballers, it can only be achieved when all 5 senses are stimulated to their fullest extent. The links between these senses cause the human brain to experience supernatural side effects, thus creating, the only way to reach maximum swag.” Well...there you have it. Maximum swag indeed.

Movie

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

Perhaps you still have frostbite from pouring a bucket of ice water on your head in 2014 to raise awareness and funds to find a cure for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). The challenge became a viral phenomenon in summer 2014. More than 17 million people posted ice bucket challenge videos, including thousands of celebrities. These videos wracked up over 10 billion views. It was worth putting ourselves through that for a great cause.

Celebrity

Frozen

Although the movie came out in late 2013, people didn’t stop talking about it and singing the songs for pretty much all of 2014. The icy disney movie filled us with a magical sensation and we can’t seem to let it go. The movie is the ninth highest-grossing film of all time and the highest-grossing animated film of all time. It’s also the highest-grossing Walt Disney Pictures release. It made a whopping $110 million worldwide in its opening weekend.

Hair The Man Bun

You either love them or you hate them. Man buns appeared upon the heads of millions of men in 2014. It’s exactly like it sounds: Men started growing out their hair and pulling it up into a bun. Who knows how or why this trend blew up in 2014, but nevertheless, there was a lot of hair going on that year.

26 Graduation Guide | Fall 2016

The Queen herself, Beyonce!

Beyonce ruled the world in 2014. Well, she does that every year, but especially in 2014. After releasing a surprise album in December of 2013, the world couldn’t stop talking about her, listening to her and watching her music videos for all of 2014. Her last album, self-titled Beyonce, was a full audio-visual album that had short films/long-form music videos released with every song. If that isn’t the definition of brilliance, I don’t know what is. The album sold 828,773 copies worldwide in the first three days, making it the fastest-selling album in iTunes history. Plus, there was no prior announcement or promotion for the album before it was released. That just proves that Beyonce is, was, and always will be the queen.

Viral Trend

Hotline Bling by Drake

Drake taught us some interesting new dance moves in 2015 with his music video for Hotline Bling. Not only did his moves makes us laugh, but it also inspired the funniest memes, gifs and parody videos ever. The video now has almost 700 million views. You know you’ve been trying to copy those drizzy moves in the club.

Left Shark during Katy Perry’s Halftime Show

Poor left shark. He couldn’t get himself together and we all found it so entertaining. In case you have no idea who left shark is, here’s an explanation. Katy Perry performed at the Super Bowl XLIX Halftime Show in 2015. She had a beach theme, typical Katy Perry, and there were people dressed as sharks dancing behind her. While the shark on the right was on point dancing along to Teenage Dream, the shark on the left went rogue and was all over the place with his improvised moves. If only that guy knew he was going to become a viral phenomenon.

Hello by Adele

Hello...it’s ADELE. In 2015, she came back onto the music scene and let the world know it by releasing her single, Hello. This song blew up and broke so many records! It was the first song to sell over a million digital copies in a week. The video broke a record by receiving 27.7 million views in 24 hours -- a record previously held by Taylor Swift’s Bad Blood video with 20.1 million views.

Netflix and Chill Was the dress White and Gold, or Blue and Black?

Remember that time when someone posted a picture of a dress and everyone lost their minds? Did you see blue and black or white and gold? Are your eyes really deceiving you or is it just a cruel joke? During the first week that the dress appeared, more than 10 million tweets mentioned the dress. Luckily, we all survived #dressgate 2015.

28 Graduation Guide | Fall 2016

Only the millennial generation can take a simple and innocent phrase and turn it into something that basically means ‘booty call.’ This generation coined the term ‘hookup culture’ and has completely redefined romantic relationships with the rise of dating apps and websites. With netflix rising in popularity right alongside us, it was only a matter of time before we combined the two.

Post Graduation Alternatives:

1

Become an adventure guide – Still looking for the opportunity to see the world and experience new and exciting cultures and people? Many college students take up the mantle of adventure guides, as they lead other adventurers up mountains, down caves, and across countries all over the world.

2

Teach English abroad – Another opportunity that many college graduates seek out is teaching English abroad. English has become the primary language of international trade, and because of that many countries in Latin America, Europe, Africa and Asia are in constant demand for English teachers.

3

Volunteer and work abroad – many international nongovernment organizations like Peace Corps, Red Cross and Global Vision International offer opportunities to help those in need while earning a paycheck and gaining valuable, real-world experience.

4

Pursue your passion – Have a passion for photography? Love woodworking? Seek out professionals who are looking for apprentices and assistants, or teach yourself a skill or hobby that you have always been interested in. Now is the time to embrace those passions that you may not have time for once you start your own career.

top trends 2016

Movie/TV

Word of the Year “Lit”

Lit has several different meanings, in different contexts. It can mean “intoxicated” (especially with weed, though plain old beer will work too). It can mean “excited” (possibly “sexually excited” in one of the above examples). And while I’ve never heard it used in such a sense, I suspect it can mean “angry” as well. And likely several others. And of course there are the dictionary meanings: “set afire” (“Frank lit the candle”) or “alighted” (“the bird lit on the wire”).

Internet Stranger Things

By far the biggest series was “Stranger Things.” The 80s era horror-fiction follows three children who meet a super powered girl named Eleven who helps them on their search for their missing friend Mike. The 80s called, they want their TV back.

Harry Potter

With a new play “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” and a prequel “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” released at the end of the year, Harry Potter was back at the forefront of people’s attention. Many are excited for the new movie series which was announces after the success of “Fantastic Beasts.”

The Walking Dead

Although the comic-based zombie ridden series is in its seventh season, none of which have been shy of success, the death of a major character, Glenn, and other major conflicts in the show caused it to be all the talk of social media every time it aired on television.

Kermit the Frog

The green muppet first took over 2016 at the beginning of the year with the “but that’s none of my business” meme which featured Kermit the Frog sipping on a cup of tea and looking away from the camera. At the end of 2016, before the tea Kermit meme even had time to fade away, the “dark Kermit” meme was seen in every other social media post. It featured Kermit the frog talking to another Kermit the frog, but this one is wearing a black hood over its eyes and encourages other Kermit to do things that he shouldn’t.

Music Beyonce

When Beyonce dropped her new single at the Superbowl Halftime show and then announced a tour for her new album during a commercial, the internet went insane. Beyonce fans, old and new, could not contain their excitement that Queen Bey had new material for them to love. Her album “Lemonade” and its singles went on to be nominated for nine Grammy awards.

Kanye West

Kanye West had a very eventful 2016 to say the least. With a new album, a few hit singles, a sold out tour that he then cancelled before it ended, the announcement of a run for president in 2020, constant talk and scrutiny in the media, eight Grammy nominations and so much more, it is easy to see why Kanye West was the talk of 2016.

34 Graduation Guide | Fall 2016

Harambe

When the Cincinnati Zoo gorilla names Harambe was killed when a little boy fell into his living area, the internet couldn’t help but make fun of the people who were distraught over his death, and it turned into the biggest meme of 2016. At one point, it seemed as though you couldn’t go 10 minutes without hearing some mention of “rest in peace, Harambe.”

gift to yourself The Perfect Graduation Gift

Preparing to live on your own after graduation can be a scary thought. You’ve spent the last four years pretending to be an adult, now it’s time to put your practice to the test. As commencement approaches it is important to be proud of this huge goal you have accomplished. Pick out a gift for your new life that will remind you of your success.

Something for your home after college

Something to use in your new work world

A frame for your well-earned diploma

Plan a graduation trip for yourself and others

Find a fun how-to book

Treat yourself to a new, mature household object. Pick out some cool house plants and test your green thumb, or maybe a new set of knives to sharpen up your cooking skills.

Maybe it’s time to retire your old CSU gear and pick out something fancy for your career pursuit. A new mousepad, briefcase, pen, laptop or even a laptop case to replace the one you plastered in stickers.

After four plus years of hard work and thousands paid in tuition, you owe it to yourself to frame your diploma.

Everyone talks about the traveling they want to do after graduation, but life can start harder and faster than expected, and traveling might fall to the bottom of your to-do list. Make this summer count and plan a graduation trip with friends.

Pick a new hobby to pursue in your life after graduation. Finding the pleasure in simple activities can help distract from the stress of figuring out life.

Build a photo album

A personalized class ring

Luggage

Business Cards

A Massage

Print out pictures from some of your favorite college memories and store them in an album. Losing electronically saved photos over time is easy to do.

For those of us who missed out on high school class rings, here’s a second chance. If you have one from high school, retire it and personalize a new one to remind you of the college days.

Picking out a new duffle or suitcase can seem like an unnecessary, overpriced decision. But think of all the adventures you’ll be going on as a graduate…you’ll need something stylish and solid.

If you already have business cards, print some new ones. Might as well find a sleek, new design for your job hunt.

After surviving finals week alone you deserve a massage, much less surviving four years at a university.
