A Message to Graduates from CSU President Tony Frank: Dear Graduates, Congratulations to our Spring 2017 graduates! This is a great occasion for you and for Colorado State University, so on behalf of all the faculty, staff, students and alumni of CSU, I just want to share our pride in you and all you have accomplished.

And as much as you have all contributed to our campus community, I’m glad you’re leaving us. It’s time. The world is waiting for you, and we have problems that need your talents, expertise and energy: • How do we feed a world whose population is expected to grow to 9 billion in the decades ahead?

• How do we safely and sustainably meet the world’s energy needs?

• How do we combat the rapid spread of disease in a world that seems to get smaller day by day?

• How do we move beyond the divisions and “isms” that hold us back and find the common ground that will allow our society and our world to move forward?

• How do we help instill hope and a sense of real potential in younger generations that see these challenges coming their way?

I clearly don’t have the answers, but I am confident that you – educated people with the courage to innovate and the passion for transforming our world – are the right ones to take them on. In fact, we are depending on you to step up and make progress where my generation and others haven’t achieved as much as we had hoped.

Two of our graduating seniors have earned the prestigious Truman Scholarship for their remarkable efforts.

Members of your class already have had an impact: More than 5,000 CSU undergraduates took part in research and advanced scholarship activities last year that ranged from working in campus labs to leading workshops with rural Colorado communities, from mentoring middle-school girls in computer science to custom-designing a new campus brewhouse. Others of you have engaged in feeding hungry families through Cans Around the Oval, joining in alternative breaks and reaching out through Project Homeless Connect.

Now, your challenge is to go out and keep that spirit of innovation, inspiration and excellence alive in your work or continued studies. You are leaving CSU to venture off into the new – and that path is yours to clear and build. Your graduation is, indeed, a beginning. Make the most of it, and take on your future with a sense of optimism and confidence.

Our campus is more accessible, more sustainable, more diverse and more academically successful because of all of you.

A Letter from Your Outgoing ASCSU President: Rams, you did it.

Can you believe it? Whether you became a Ram right out of high school, transferred from another institution, joined us after time in the work or military force or are an adult learner who stepped on campus in a later stage in your life, one thing is certain: you made significant commitments to obtain your degree and call yourself a proud Colorado State University graduate.

While I did not get to know each and every one of you personally, I did get the honor of serving on your behalf this past academic year as your student body president. Throughout the last semester I witnessed a handful of senior appreciation programs among our 400+ registered student organizations, long nights in the library working on your capstone projects and countless photoshoots on the Oval, Downtown Fort Collins and Horsetooth with documentation of your personal CSU journeys on social media. As your student representative on the CSU System Board of Governors, I am constantly immersed in spreadsheets and paragraphs regarding CSU’s retention and graduation statistics. To be on the front lines alongside all of you as a student who sees what it takes to balance academics, employment, student organization obligations, on top of your personal life circumstances, actually gives life to those numbers. The hard work you put in day in and day out attests to the level of sacrifice you made to get your degrees this week.

I encourage you to cherish your accomplishments, and never forget this place. CSU is where you grew and made memories, lifelong friends and mentors and most importantly where you obtained the knowledge and skills to kickstart the next chapter in life. I hope that you stay connected to our campus as a new member of the Alumni Association that boasts a community of over 215,000+ CSU living alumni, and that you come back for events like our annual Homecoming & Family Week. No matter where your next chapter takes you, make sure you thank all the people who helped support your journey, and know that you will always have a home on this campus as a lifelong member of the CSU Ramily.

Thank You, CSU: A Reflection My mother always told me she knew I’d do great things. Although I had my doubts, I knew college was the first big step in fulfilling her prophecy. CSU seemed to be the best fit.

It’s far enough away from home where I felt independent but close enough that I could follow I-25 three hours south for a home cooked meal. I went into my freshman year with a pit of terrified excitement in my belly.

By Selena Rodriguez There are some moments you spend your whole life anticipating. They’re the towering milestones; the rites-of-passage spoken of as legend. They can be humbling, like the awkward stumble into puberty. Or they can be exhilarating, like moving into your first apartment. But they almost always surprise us. Somehow, that moment you’ve waited for your entire life can feel foreign. You reach that peak you’ve been climbing for as long as you can remember but words seem to fail you. All that’s left to do is stand in awe of where you are and perhaps squint at the horizon to catch a glimpse of how far you’ve come.

So here I stand, just weeks away from officially checking “graduate college” off of life’s great to-do list. I can’t lie; I’m absolutely terrified to see what’s next. I don’t know what waits to meet me on the other side of that peak. But what I do know is that I made it. And I learned more than I could’ve ever imagined along the ride. I came to Colorado State as an unsure girl trying to make my family proud.

I’m leaving here as a woman with a mission and a light I hope to shine on as many as I possibly can.

I made friends and lost them. I went through terrible bouts of anxiety and learned to push past them. I changed the direction of my studies more times than I can remember and through it all found what I’m passionate about. The most important things I learned while at CSU weren’t hidden in the lines of a text book. What I’ll carry with me out of Moby Arena after my graduation ceremony are the

tools to live my best life and hopefully help others do the same along the way.

I owe so much to CSU and all of those who breathe life into its walls. This article might not exist today if it weren’t for David Freed who helped me believe in my writing.

And if it weren’t for Michelle Ancell, I might not have gotten my first freelance magazine gig. Who knows, I might not have even made the switch to a journalism degree if it weren’t for all the work Ananda Luttet does. This is just a tiny fraction of all the wonderful human beings that made my time at CSU worthwhile.

Through all the connections, brief interactions and nudges in the right direction, I’m about to graduate college. I couldn’t be more grateful.

Soon I’ll have new paths to explore and higher mountains to climb. I’ll carry all I’ve learned in my knapsack, knowing I’m forever changed after these four tearful, wonderful, unbelievable years. I’ll take the punches as they come and humbly take victories with a smile. I know that I’ll do great things now. But, just for a while, I’m going to sit on this peak I’ve worked so hard to scale and take in the overwhelming beauty of all that lies behind it.

Three Things I Realized During My Senior Year of College

Some of the best opportunities are the most unexpected ones.

In my senior year of high school, I had a bunch of potential ideas about where I wanted to attend college. To be honest, Colorado State wasn’t near the top of the list. It was only after I was rejected from my top choices that I seriously began to consider CSU as an option. Reflecting back on this process, I was devastated to be rejected from the other universities.

However, contemplating my past few years at CSU, I believe I was denied from those other colleges for a reason. I also believe I was accepted at CSU for a reason. Although attending CSU was at first an unexpected decision for me, it has become one of the best decisions I have made to date and I wouldn’t trade my experience here for the world.

Who my true friends are (and why).

Freshman year was exciting because it was a time dedicated to meeting new people, especially during the first few weeks of school. I can’t tell you how many people I met during that first month, but I can tell you with confidence that I’ve only kept a strong relationship with about eight of them. At first, I thought that part of the beauty of college was meeting so many people, having so many friends and always having someone to hang out with. But as time has gone on and some friendships have ended while others have strengthened, I realized that part of the true beauty of college is developing lasting friendships with people who genuinely want to be part of your life. College can sometimes

be considered a self-centered experience because it is largely focused on personal interests and development, and everyone is incredibly busy. This is why the friendships I still have are so special: the friends I have now make an active effort to be a part of my life, and I make an active effort to be a part of theirs. I know that my friendships are legitimate because sometimes we may not have the time, but we still make active efforts to remain relevant in each other’s lives.

Time catches up on you.

One of my first career goals was to be a Barbie doll clothes designer. I was probably around the age of four. But as I got older, my answer to the question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” continued to change. I went through phases of wanting to be a doctor, lawyer, marine biologist, fashion designer, author, veterinarian, teacher and many more.

As I made my way through elementary, middle and high school, the question of “What do you want to be when you grow up?” transformed into the more realistic, “What are your plans after high school?”

Easy – get my undergraduate degree in this or that and seek out summer internships. That question transformed into, “What are your plans after college?”

Another relatively basic one - maybe go to grad school, travel the world, settle down and start a career I love. After deciding on a major, everything else after that was still fair game. While in undergrad, it’s easy to speculate and say you plan on traveling or going to graduate school because you still have time to

figure it all out. The possibilities are endless. And then it’s senior year and you actually have to answer those questions realistically. This was one of my biggest realizations during senior year: the speculations I made about my future for the past 15 years were now decisions that had to be made.

Senior year is a lot of things – happy sad, relieving, stressful, sentimental and the like. For me, it was also reflective, and my realizations have played a huge and positive part in my experience of the final year of college.

Showing a flexible and adaptive personality demonstrates that you not only accept change, but you embrace it. Failing to demonstrate flexibility suggests an unwillingness to change one’s views, which can often be difficult to work around.

Rams History in the Peace Corp

The Peace Corps is a program run by the United States government that sends volunteers abroad to offer technical assistance to countries as well as promote cross-cultural education. Peace Corps volunteers are trained in one of six different sectors (Environment, Agriculture, Education, Youth in Development, Community Economic Development and Health) and then stationed to work in other countries’ schools, governments and businesses to promote peace and build global friendship.

As of 2017, Colorado State University ranks 6th among large undergraduate schools producing Peace Corp volunteers. CSU also ranks in the top 15 volunteer-producing colleges and universities of all time. The “A” The “A” is found painted on the western hillside of Fort Collins.

It’s there in honor of CSU’s original mascot: the Aggies.

CAM the Ram CAM’s name stands for “Colorado Agricultural and Mechanical” College (the university’s former name).

Ram Ruckus Ram Ruckus is the university’s official spirit squad. The idea of Ram Ruckus is to create pride in everything students do at CSU. Founded in 2012, it was created by students, for students to engage in student life at CSU, specifically athletics.

CSU Oval The Oval is the heart of the CSU campus. It was designed in 1909 as an aesthetically pleasing way to connect the main buildings on campus. Now, the Oval features historic buildings such as Johnson Hall, which was the original student center.

I Love CSU Day! On April 18th, CSU students celebrate the university by wearing all green (a “green out”). Games and events are held on the LSC Plaza and the governor of Colorado signs a proclamation declaring April 18th “I love CSU Day” across Colorado. Alumni are also encouraged to wear green and gold on this day.

Graduation Traditions Tossing the Grad Cap • Tossing the graduation cap was started by the Naval Academy in 1912. Prior to 1912, the graduates were required to serve two years in the fleet as midshipmen before being commissioned, so they still needed their caps after graduation.

Starting in 1912, however, graduates were immediately commissioned and received their officer hats, so they no longer needed their old caps.

"Pomp and Circumstance” • “Pomp and Circumstance,” also known as “Land of Hope and Glory,” was written by Sir Edward Elgar in 1901. The title comes from a line in Othello that states, “Pride, pomp and circumstance of glorious war!”

The catchy tune became associated with graduation when Sir Edward Elgar received a doctorate from Yale and the song was played at his graduation in honor of his accomplishment.

Cap and Gown • The cap and gown tradition began in the 12th century when universities had no sufficient heating systems. Graduating students wore the cap and gown to stay warm during their graduation ceremonies.

Twerking Miley also introduced us to 2013’s most popular dance craze: Twerking. If you don’t know what twerking is (what cave have you been living in?), it is a sexually provocative dance move where you stick your butt out and shake it all around - it’s all in the hips and the booty. Twerking is popular in hip-hop music videos. Miley Cyrus is known for flaunting her twerking skills at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards. Also, the word ‘twerking’ was the runner-up in the Oxford Dictionaries Word of the Year in 2013.

Word of the Year A pair of Norwegian brothers got this ridiculous song stuck in our heads because it seemed to be constantly playing throughout 2013. The video came out in September 2013 and now has over 590 million views as of April 2016. Did we ever actually find out what the fox says?

The Harlem Shake Admit it: You either made one of these videos, or watched them constantly during 2013. Nobody can resist jumping up and dancing wildly when that beat drops. The video went viral in February 2013. By April, thousands of videos had been uploaded with over 1.21 billion views in total. The song also reached #1 on iTunes.

Miley Cyrus “Wrecking Ball” Video You either love her or you hate her, but you can’t deny that Miley Cyrus made quite a statement in 2013. Who can forget the day the Wrecking Ball music video came out and the world saw Miley swinging naked from a giant wrecking ball? If the hair chopping and the VMAs charade didn’t showcase her transformation enough, this video surely did. The video was released in August 2013, and broke the Vevo record for the most views in the first 24 hours with an astonishing 19.3 million views. It also won Video of the Year at the 2014 VMAs and World’s Best Video at the 2014 World Music Awards.

“Selfie” Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook and every other social media app has fueled the selfie phenomenon. Whether you like the high angles or the mirror selfies, chances are you spent a lot of your time in 2013 taking pictures of yourself. According to Samsung, selfies make up 30% of the photos taken by people aged 18–24.

“YOLO” Ah yes, the acronym you love to hate. YOLO, in case you didn’t know, means You Only Live Once! This motto was popularized in 2013 by the rapper Drake. It sounds cool when he says it, not so much when we say it. The phrase has been overused, but ultimately it has a positive message.

People started saying it as a way to remember to live life to the fullest and take chances while you can. However, there was also a lot of criticism that the phrase was promoting reckless behavior.

Moment in History Colorado Amendment 64

Colorado Amendment 64. Marijuana became legal in the Mile High state. I’ll be blunt: there is no need to weed through the facts on this one. Just ask your buds! Whether you do it or pot, I mean not, personal use of marijuana became a legal option for those over the age of 21. At first you couldn’t, but now you CANnabis.

A Gift to Yourself

By Veronica Baas Preparing to live on your own after graduation can be a scary thought. You’ve spent the last four years pretending to be an adult, but now it’s time to put your practice to the test. As commencement approaches, it is important to be proud of this huge goal you have accomplished. Pick out a gift for your new life that will remind you of your success.

1. Something for your home after college.

For those of us who missed out on high school class rings, here’s a second chance. If you have one from high school, retire it and personalize a new one to remind you of the college days.

Treat yourself to a new, mature household object. Pick out some cool house plants and test your green thumb, or maybe a new set of knives to sharpen up your cooking skills.

Maybe it’s time to retire your old CSU gear and pick out something fancy for your career pursuit. A new mousepad, briefcase, pen, laptop or even a laptop case to replace the one you plastered in stickers.

After four or more years of hard work and thousands paid in tuition, you owe it to yourself to frame your diploma.

4. Plan a graduation trip for yourself and

others.

Everyone talks about the traveling they want to do after graduation, but life can start harder and faster than expected, and traveling might fall to the bottom of your todo list. Make this summer count and plan a graduation trip with friends.

5. Find a fun how-to book.

Pick a new hobby to pursue in your life after graduation. Finding the pleasure in simple activities can help distract from the stress of figuring out life.

Print out pictures from some of your favorite college memories and store them in an album. Losing electronically saved photos over time is easy to do.

8. Luggage.

Picking out a new duffle or suitcase can seem like an unnecessary, overpriced decision. But think of all the adventures you’ll be going on as a graduate…you’ll need something stylish and solid.

9. Business cards.

If you already have business cards, print some new ones. Might as well find a sleek, new design for your job hunt.

10. A massage.

After surviving finals week alone, much less surviving four years of college, you deserve a massage.
