GRADUATION GUIDE | FALL 2019 | 3

A Message to FROM CSU PRESIDENT JOYCE MCCONNELL: Dear Graduates, Congratulations! On behalf of the entire CSU community, I am delighted to celebrate all of you. As members of Colorado State University’s graduating class of Fall 2019, you are receiving your degrees during CSU’s sesquicentennial year, which makes your achievements part of our long, proud history. Today is an important milestone, as you begin the transition from college to career. But your learning isn’t coming to an end; in some ways it’s just beginning. A rapidly changing world means the needs of the workforce you’re entering and the size and scope of the challenges you’ll be facing will be constantly evolving. By some estimates, today’s graduates may change careers— not just jobs—as many as seven times. So while you leave here prepared to succeed and thrive in your chosen careers, it’s entirely possible your dream job is still somewhere in your future. Maybe it doesn’t even exist yet. But whatever it is, whenever you encounter it, you’ll be ready. When I received my bachelor’s degree, I never imagined being a university president someday. A few years earlier, I was working sound for rock concerts. A few years later, I was graduating from law school. What I realized along the way was that I loved learning. As a result, I’ve spent my entire career in higher education. And I’m still learning, because you never know what challenge or opportunity might be coming next. You leave here with the knowledge you’ll need to succeed in your chosen careers and the creativity and critical thinking you’ll need to be life-long learners. You will gain wisdom with every experience. You will be ready to transform yourselves when challenges—and opportunities—arise. Whatever you do next, do one thing for yourself: Own your brilliance. You are and will remain members of the larger CSU community, all characterized by brilliant minds and great hearts. 4 | FALL 2019 | GRADUATION GUIDE

This is a community that extends across our nation and around the globe. And today, more than ever, the world needs our brilliance to confront increasingly complex challenges. Our community also has a powerful, shining, bold spirit— one of hope and optimism, one that will not be dimmed by those challenges. For 150 years it has endured, growing brighter and stronger, particularly in the face of adversity. Let’s own that brilliance and shine together, today, tomorrow, and far into the future

Dr. Joyce Mcconnell

A Message to FROM ASCSU PRESIDENT BEN AMUNDSON: Graduates, Congratulations—you made it. You may be nervous. Your entire life you were told that you were preparing to live. In elementary school they prepared you for middle school. In middle school they prepared you for high school. In high school for college— and in college for this. And this is where you are now. I have news for you—nothing is new. The past 20+ years of your life you were living just as much as you are today. So amongst the anxieties and fears of the next step, know that you’ve been walking all along. It feels odd to give advice from an undergraduate to graduates—so here are some pieces of advice I’ve heard throughout the years from people much (much) older than me. First, treat the janitor with as much respect as you would your boss. Respect is given, not earned. Second, remember that doing the right thing is rarely easy but always right. Find someone to look up to who makes this clear. Remember the legacies of great people: MLK, Lincoln, Keller, and many more. The heroes in my life very rarely veer away from telling the truth. Lastly, Rams, pose yourself as the person you want to be. What do I mean by this? If you want to be happy then smile more often. If you want to be a leader then find opportunities to lead. The first step to being a good person is acting like one. Thomas Edison once explained that most people miss opportunity because it is dressed in overalls and disguised as hard work. But most of all make the most of your degree. It is a privilege—a privilege that you had to fight for—but nevertheless a privilege. I wish you the best!

150 T

he Class of 2019 will be graduating in CSU’s 150th year of operation. It is impressive to see a university that has made so many advancements still remaining true to many of its roots. Of course, there have been multiple changes, but the mentality stays the same, for 150 years students have been proud to be a CSU Ram.

8 | FALL 2019 | GRADUATION GUIDE

In 1870, six years before Colorado even achieved statehood, Fort Collins became home to our states land grant school and Colorado Agricultural College was born. Starting out it was very uncomplicated; one president and two faculty members were all it took to get the ball rolling. Its mission has always been straightforward, to be committed to excellence. On this anniversary

I would say it is easy to see that standard is still being upheld. In the 150 years of operation there have been many changes. When it first opened to students, CSU had one building, Old Main, located on the oval. Before the cannon blast that currently signals a touchdown, they used to ring the Old Main bell to signify victory. You can no longer see the building

as it was lost to arson in 1970, but when you go to the stadium you can still see the bell that once hung on the building. Many wonder why the switch to a cannon occurred. The cannon is actually our longest running tradition. Because we are a land-grant university, it is required that we have military presence, otherwise known as ROTC. Therefore, it only made sense to honor that part of tradition with a cannon blast at the game. When it comes to a football tradition and rivalry that goes back farther than the Rocky Mountain Showdown, there is only one thing, Border War, a.k.a the battle for the Bronze Boot. CSU faced off against the Wyoming Cowboys for the first time in 1899. In 1968 the Bronze Boot trophy was inaugurated. It was a boot that was worn in Vietnam by a former CSU ROTC assistant professor and was thus given to the team that won. CSU hasn’t seen the boot in some years, but there is always next season. CAM the Ram is by far one of the cutest mascots this school has seen and a student favorite. But CSU did not officially become the Rams until 1959. The university had a few Mascots, one favorite being Peanuts the bulldog and another, Teddy the black bear cub. Neither stuck and eventually the ram was adopted to represent CSU. In the early years of CSU one of the first classes were 25 strong, now total enrollment

reaches over 33,000. It was a tiny campus spanning 30 acres. The current campus covers 4,773 acres. A lot has changed in the past 150 years and so we recognize this anniversary and representation of where we came from and where we are now. So congratulations graduates and remember, you are a part of something great.

C

ongrats! You’re officially a college grad and are on your way to the real wo rld. Despite that fact that you most likely feel like a baby bird being kicked from the nest, there is no reason to be afraid. You’ve been progressively adulting for the last four years and now it’s time to take the plunge. But in case you’re worried here are some tips to help ease the way.

Donʼt Be Afraid to Go Your Own Way

Your college friends have probably been a constant in your life for a while now and have been your support team for all the hard days. With everything changing it can be hard to imagine having to make new friends along with all the other new aspects to your life. But if there’s a dream job or somewhere you’ve always wanted to live, don’t be afraid to go for it. Now is a great time to take a leap a try something new and doing it on your own can be thrilling and empowering.

Take Care of Yourself

You now have a unique opportunity now that you’re done, more time for yourself. No longer does homework and exams control your life, so take a moment and check in with yourself. It is okay to say that you need to take a breather or maybe pick up a hobby you didn’t have time for before. Part of being successful in the real world is owning up to the fact that taking care of yourself is a priority.

10 | FALL 2019 | GRADUATION GUIDE

Try New Things

101

It’s easy to forget about all the great things the world outside of college has to offer, especially when you’ve had a really great few years in good ol’ Fort Collins. But if you’re feeling like life after college is going at a slower pace, try something new! It doesn’t have to be major; it could be as simple as trying some new restaurants or signing up for an art class. Take the time to reconnect and discover something new about yourself.

The Fun Doesnʼt Stop When the Cap Comes Off

Just because you’re leaving college doesn’t mean the good times end. Don’t listen to the naysayers who claim life from here on out is all downhill. Life during college and after is what you make it and you can enjoy it even after. Different doesn’t necessarily mean bad and there is a whole world to explore. So, don’t stress and go out there and live your best life and have fun.

Ram History & Fight Song

“History in Color”

Fight on you stalwart Ram Team, On to the goal! Tear the (Opponent’s) line asunder, As down the field we thunder. Knights of the green and gold, Fight with all your might! Fight on you stalwart Ram Team, Fight! Fight! Fight!

Being a Ram here at CSU means dressing in green and gold for game day, but CSUʼs colors used to be pumpkin orange and alfalfa green back when the universityʼs students were the Aggies.

I Love CSU Day!

Alma Mater

On April 18, students at CSU celebrate their University with a “green out.” Games and events are held on the Lory Student Center Plaza and the governor of Colorado signs a proclamation declaring April 18 I Love CSU Day across Colorado! Alumni are also encouraged to show their Ram Pride and wear green and gold.

Hail to thee, our Alma Mater, Colorado State. Memories are everlasting of this place so great! May thy Green and Gold unite us, loyal ever be. Colorado State, our Alma Mater, Hail, all hail, to thee.

CSU Oval CAM the Ram CAMʼs name stands for “Colorado Agriculture and Mechanical” College (the universities formal name).

Significance of the The Stump. Some see it as a misplaced tree, others understand it as a historical monument for free speech. The Stump is the few square feet on campus Plaza where absolutely anything goes. Whether that be religious arguments, an expression of self-worth, an argument against the adminstration, or a story of hope.

The Stump has tradtionally been used to perform some of the most courageous acts of CSU students throughout history. Colorado State cherishes The Stump for an unimaginable amount of true expression on this campus. Love it or hate it, CSU holds onto values of freedom through this misplaced wood tree trunk. It remains valuable to all students, and if you’re lucky - a speech made from the plateau of The Stump may have touched your heart in a way that no classroom ever could.

GRADUATION GUIDE | FALL 2019 | 25

You may be leaving Fort Collins, but Fort Collins will never leave you. It is a town that definitely leaves a mark on everyone’s heart who comes to visit. Here are some classic favorites that may very well make saying goodbye that much harder.

THE REC ROOM

OLD TOWN

Every student who has turned 21 in Fort Collins has probably made a trip to the Rec Room. It is a memorable place with a lot of personality. Most of us have been hearing about tales from this lively bar since our freshman year. And I’m sure everyone has found themselves there on a night out or while partaking in RamBand (another student favorite). Either way, it’s hard to say goodbye to a place so weirdly fun.

One of the best and cutest parts of Fort Collins, even Walt Disney thought so. With options to shop, dine, visit a museum, or just walk and enjoy the day it’s hard to argue that there is a better place than Old Town. Filled with local shops, it’s easy to spend a whole day or more just wandering around and definitely worth the parking battle. It will make every list for returning alum who come to visit.

HORSETOOTH RESERVOIR

BIG CITY BURRITO

For many, Horsetooth was probably a major selling point in coming to Fort Collins and one of the first places you visit once you get here. With its many beautiful hikes, gorgeous views and space for water sports, it’s easy to see why this place is a favorite for many. So, before you go make sure to catch one more sunset up at the reservoir because we all know there isn’t anything quite like a Colorado sunset.

A staple of Fort Collins for the past 20 years, there is no other burrito quite like a Big City Burrito. Tucked into the the street right before Old Town, it’s hard to miss and even harder to pass up. With everything made in house and plenty of options, everyone knows it’s the place to go.

GRADUATION GUIDE | FALL 2019 | 33

Professional Development What does every college student want after graduation? A job. Here are some tips to develop your professional self and be successful in the path you take.

1

JOIN PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATIONS

2

FIND A MENTOR

3

CREATE A PLAN

Groups that focus on professions often focus on advancing skill and helping the worker, and they can also be great for networking. Many conduct workshops and educational sessions can help advance or brush up your skills in the field. These are useful and easy as they are often offered in person and online.

Almost every successful person you’ll talk with will tell you they had a mentor of some sort. Some may have been assigned and some may have just met someone kind enough to take them under their wing. They can be really helpful in learning firsthand about the job and getting guidance in navigating the real world.

A good way to guarantee progress is to set long and short-term goals for yourself. It keeps you accountable and gives you something to work toward. They don’t have to be extremely difficult, in fact it’s actually better to set achievable goals, studies show. This also is helpful for when interviewers ask what your goals or plans are for the future, you’ll be prepared to impress.

WORK ON YOUR PERSONAL BRAND

5

WORK ON YOUR PERSONAL BRAND

Ask yourself, how do people perceive me? Personal brand is more than what many assume is just your social media presence, it’s how you present yourself to the world. Maybe there are things you want to change or work on, take the time to do it, it will benefit you in the long run. Remember confidence is key and kindness goes a long way, even in the career field.

It can be hard to convince yourself that it’s okay to take time for hobbies not directly related to your career field, especially when you’re just starting out. However, specialists say that workers who pursue hobbies are more happy, successful and eager to work on new skills. So don’t give up your favorite pasttime just yet and if you haven’t discovered it quite yet this is a great time to branch out.
