LETTER TO GRADUATES FROM

President Tony Frank Congratulations on your upcoming commencement! This is a great occasion for you and for Colorado State University, and we’re enormously proud of our students and all you’ve achieved. The outlook for the Class of 2014 is encouraging. In recent years, 70 percent of our graduating students secured their first destination plans – either a job or admission to graduate school by the time they graduated, well above the national average. Our students also left CSU with smaller average debt loads, and 91 percent said they would choose Colorado State again. Still, I know these kinds of statistics don’t matter much

4

when you’re trying to find a decent-paying job in your field in a highly competitive market – and student loans are coming due. So let me pile on with some more statistics that might help brighten your perspective: countless financial analysts continue to demonstrate that a college degree ultimately has a greater payoff than a similar investment in the stock market. The Brookings Institution calculates the return on investment on a student loan at 15 percent annually. College graduates earn on average $1 million more over their working lives than people without a bachelor’s degree. In other words, the hard work you’ve put in to get to this point is a great investment in yourself and your future. But,

the most important payoff from that investment is what you actually do with the skills, knowledge and credentials you’ve acquired at Colorado State. Our world needs you – your ideas, your passion, and your commitment. We have problems that need fixing. How do we feed a world whose population is expected to grow to 9 billion in the decades ahead? How do we safely and sustainably meet the world’s energy needs? How do we combat the rapid spread of disease in a world that seems to get smaller day by day? How do we help instill hope and a sense of real potential in younger generations that see these challenges coming their way? As educated women and men, these challenges are now

yours. The solutions won’t be easy or obvious – if they were, my own generation would have solved these problems a long time ago. But I have full confidence that those solutions are within your reach. In that spirit, I want to offer a thought from the man who authorized the creation of landgrant universities like CSU more than 150 years ago, President Abraham Lincoln. (You didn’t think I’d miss a chance to quote Lincoln, did you?) In his now famous annual address to Congress on Dec. 3, 1863, he spoke these words: “The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and so we must rise with the occasion. As our situation is new, we must think anew and act anew.” You are leaving CSU to ven-

ture off into the new – and that path is yours to clear and build. The term “commencement” signifies that the end of this phase of your education is not truly an end, but a beginning — a foundation upon which you’ll build a life and career. Your graduation is, indeed, a beginning. Make the most of it, and take on your future with a sense of optimism and the confidence that you’ve made an outstanding investment in your future. All of us at CSU are proud of you, and we celebrate this achievement with you. Congratulations again to the Class of 2014! Dr. Tony Frank President

Picking Up Your Regalia Dropping Off Regalia All regalia can be picked up in Moby C-Wing. If you placed the order before Nov. 12, regalia will be organized in alphabetical order. ID is required. If you ordered a Grad Pack, you must first pick up a voucher from the Alumni Association table before picking up your gown. Distribution times are as follows: Dec. 17-18 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Dec. 19 Orders can only be picked up one hour before your ceremony. Dec. 20 Orders can only be picked up one hour before your ceremony until 5 p.m.

Return your regalia to the Moby C-Wing immediately after your ceremony. You will be charged if you return your gowns late.

Where to Park Moby Visitors can park in any Z lots on campus; this includes the Z-lot sections of the Moby parking lot. From UNC to NYC CSU grad takes internship with Marie Claire magazine

By Alexa Phillips College Avenue Magazine How many CSU graduates can say that after graduating, they get to move to New York City and intern for one of the biggest fashion magazines in the industry? Graduating senior Brian Guiducci can say just that. After graduation, Guiducci will be moving to New York City with the opportunity to intern with Zanna Roberts Rassi, the fashion editor for Marie Claire magazine. Guiducci’s journey begins after high school, when he decided to attend University of Northern Colorado to pursue a degree in elementary education. After two years, he decided that it was not really a good fit for him. Guiducci became interested in wanting to write for fashion magazines and began looking into journalism programs; he eventually choose Colorado State because of its accredited journalism program. Guiducci came to CSU with the intention of majoring in journalism but then discovered that CSU also had an amazing apparel and merchandising

program (currently ranked ninth in the nation). He considered double majoring in both journalism and apparel merchandising with a minor in business administration but ultimately decided to major in apparel and merchandising with a minor in business administration. With the help of his professors, notably Carol EngelEnright, acting as mentors and his expanding knowledge of and skill set in the industry, Guiducci discovered just how big the fashion industry really is and how many different jobs there were. With that, he decided that he wanted to work on the creative side, leaving him with a love for the editorial aspects of a magazine. Guiducci’s major milestone during his college career was the founding of The Fashion Report, the only collegiate fashion magazine in the state of Colorado. He has stood as the editor in chief for the last two years since beginning the magazine, managing a staff of over 70 people. The magazine has grown from solely biannual, digitally-

published magazine issues to an online magazine website that publishes regular content on beauty, style and features. “We [the magazine] can only go up from here,” Guiducci said in regards to the progress the magazine has made in the last two years and where he sees it going in the future. Guiducci’s ultimate career goal is to become fashion editor for a fashion magazine. He is already heading in the right direction with his 12-week internship, beginning in January at Marie Claire. Ideally, he hopes to get a job afterwards within the Hearst Corporation for a magazine, if not for Marie Claire. All this would not have been possible if Guiducci did not give “115 percent” towards everything that he does, he said. Guiducci has been very dedicated and career-focused, something he has learned from his college experience. He is involved in the Department of Design and Merchandising and Fashion Group International at CSU. In addition, he attends Denver fashion events,

such as Denver Fashion Weekend. He also networks, talking to business owners around Fort Collins, such as Tuana Hair Designs and Social. Rather than just using them as a professional connection, Guiducci is friends with most of the business owners, maintaining an actual friendship. Through them, he has made numerous connections for amazing opportunities within the Denver fashion scene. He had the opportunity to intern with contributing editor and stylist for 5280, Georgia Alexia Benjou, helping on photoshoots not only for 5280, but also for Inspirato and Denver Underground. Additionally, he was a wardrobe assistant for Geoffrey Mac, assisting on various music videos for Sharon Needles and top 40 artist Neon Hitch. “Who you know gets you to the door, your resume gets you through the

door, and your work ethic after that keeps you in the door,” Guiducci said. Guiducci will be walking in fall graduation this December before heading off to New York. He will be graduating with a bachelor’s degree in apparel and merchandising and a minor in business administration. He said he is sad to leave Fort Collins and its people and his family behind but is eager to see what amazing opportunities are yet to come in the next phase of his life and his career in New York City. “CSU will definitely always be a home to me, someplace I can always come back to,” Guiducci said. “Being a CSU Ram means being a family, a big family of people, and I’m proud to call myself a Ram.”

Straight from the Ram’s mouth By Hunter Goddard College Avenue Magazine Ram pride is like the green and gold glitter we plaster on ourselves at the Rocky Mountain Showdown every year – it never really goes away. As such, College Avenue sat down with a current CSU student and a former CSU student to gain their perspectives on the Ram lifestyle. An alumna from the Class of 2012, Kalyn McGinnis, who was a psychology major at CSU, became a Ram to begin with

because the psychology degree here is a Bachelor of Science rather than a Bachelor of Arts. “The best part of CSU was the community,” McGinnis said. “There was always a place for everyone and the campus was always busy with activities and events, but it easily extended out of campus to incorporate most of Fort Collins. You never left CSU.” According to McGinnis, a Denver native, Fort Collins proved to be far enough away from home that she was able to independently develop into the

person she is today. McGinnis said CSU is the way your regular hometown suburban college would be, neither isolated nor snobby. “Immediately after graduating, I was over CSU,” McGinnis said. “But, after some time, I definitely am proud to be a CSU Ram.” As for current student Spencer Downing, a senior in human development and family studies, she was drawn to CSU because it was the only outof-state school her California family would help her pay for,

is the community within the student body,” Downing said. “We support each other when times get stressful and our goals are oriented towards a more sustainable future, both locally and globally.” Truly, CSU, the Home of the Rams, is a culture like no other. And, what makes it such a special environment for young adults to grow in is the opportunity it grants us to learn about ourselves all throughout life and realize that we have been capable people all along.

Most Useful Gifts to Give a Graduate By Valerie Vester College Avenue Magazine What to give the recent graduates in your life is a difficult decision. What to tell people if asked what you want for graduation can be equally difficult. Gifts that can actually be used and appreciated are probably the best bet. While it may not seem very original or creative, money may be the most practical gift because it can be put towards whatever the recipient actually needs. It does not have to have a set dollar amount, so people can give what they can afford and the graduate can put it towards whatever he or she needs.

Jimmy Ulmer, a 2014 CSU business administration graduate, said the most useful gift one could give is “money towards buying something useful and necessary to help make the transition from student life to full-time working adult life.” For him, he said that was “money towards buying a car.” A well-functioning laptop or computer is so necessary for today’s lifestyle that it also makes a great graduation gift. While laptops can be pretty pricey, they are something

that a graduate will probably use on a daily basis and will last for years to come. If a recent graduate is taking some time off before diving into his or her future career, travel is a great gift. Help them embark on a unique journey unparalleled by others. Not much can teach you more than being thrown into a culture completely new to you and learning to understand the world. Janelle Mayorga, a senior

Another suitable gift is anything that can help a graduate in the future. “Overall, the most useful gifts are things that will aid you in your postgraduation journey,” Mayorga said. While not all of these options are super expensive, some of them are far out of the average person’s price range. One way to help with the cost is to split it with friends and family. Remember that the most useful gift is going to be different for each person. Sometimes, it may be more practical and, other times, it may be more sentimental.

Advice for 2015 graduates from 2014 alumni Graduation brings plenty of changes but life goes on after CSU For many, graduation is approaching fast, but, for some, it is already a distant memory. As intimidating as the prospect of life after college can be, it is not the end of the road – it is the beginning of a journey. For biomedical sciences major Alison Jaeger, class of 2014, postgraduate life has been an improvement. According to Jaeger, she originally became a Ram because she is a Honolulu native, but wanted to go out of state because CSU and University of Hawaii are sister schools. “I was shocked at how

understanding employers are, sometimes more understanding than professors I had,” Jaeger said. “Having a lot of free time is unusual to me, but reading books for pleasure and watching movies without feeling guilty because I am not studying is amazing.” Jaeger said, however, that life is not handed to you on a silver platter just because you are a college graduate, and experience is just as important as an education. She is now a rehab assistant at the Center for Neu-

Romberg said she feels appropriately qualified for law school because of her time at CSU, and because she is no longer in Fort Collins, she misses the sense of community and friendliness surrounding the campus. “I loved my time at CSU,” Romberg said. “It allowed me to take classes in a lot of different interest areas. It was also really great to have professors who really want you to do well and are really approachable.” With the class of fall 2014 poised to become alumni as well, life at CSU is soon to be a past at CSU, and life after CSU will be forever changed because of it.

By Sarah Hansen College Avenue Magazine We all remember how terrifying it was to begin our freshman year at CSU. Everything was new to us — from new people to new schedules and a new place to a new lifestyle. In order to adjust, many of us may have sought out the advice of upperclassmen because we felt that they carried an aura of maturity and wisdom. But, in doing so, we tended to forget that, as incoming freshmen, we also held a great deal of wisdom when it came to life. So, as a graduating senior, you may be finding yourself at a standstill. Your wisdom and intellect about college life has

brought you this far, but now that college is over, you may be feeling lost in the sense of not knowing what to expect outside of college. Fortunately, there are many bright freshmen practically bursting with advice about life outside of the college atmosphere. Health and exercise science freshman Domiana Piazzisi said the one thing she would suggest would be to, “Not lose yourself. Remember who you are and what your values are, and don’t let the world change you.” A lot of times, we tend to believe that college is the only big transition in life that can make or break a person. But, we forget that the real world is even bigger than our bubble

Society, so why not just go for it? As the saying goes, there is no better time than now, and if you sit around and wait, you are definitely going to regret not giving fun a try. So there you have it, from your own CSU freshmen to you. This senior year is your last chance to take risks and try something new and exciting. Do not sit around and let time pass you by. When the day does come for you to graduate and head into the real world, remember who you are. Stay true to your beliefs, and do not let anyone or anything try to change you. After all, you have worked so hard trying to become the person you are today at CSU, so why try to change it?

How to Decorate Your Cap: By Valerie Vester College Avenue Magazine your accomplishments here at CSU. Here are some ideas to get you started!

My family complained about not being able to see where I was during the ceremony, and a decorated cap would have solved the issue.

Bethany Serafin, a 2012 CSU equine science graduate, wishes she would have decorated her cap for graduation because “not only is it very artistic and unique to an individual, it allows family and friends to spot you in the crowd,” she said. “My family complained about not being able to see where I was during the ceremony, and a decorated cap would have solved the issue.” Unfortunately, CSU requests that you do not decorate your cap for commencement. But, this doesn’t mean you have to miss out! You can always decorate your cap after the ceremony. While it won’t help your family find you in the crowd, it can make a great decoration to remind you of

Shay Womack, a 2006 CSU international relations graduate, said her favorite decorated cap that she has seen was “completely covered with the school’s colors in gemstones and said ‘You Did It.’”

Quotes Quotes are one way to help others learn your story. Try choosing one that represents your journey or one you can look at for motivation in the future. Some examples are “Step by step, day by day, I will

change the world,” “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams,” or “Not all who wander are lost.”

About You Another idea is to decorate your cap with things about yourself. Use your name, graduation year, initials, fraternity/ sorority letters, something you love or a combination of them all to make your cap unique. For example, if you love music you could cover your cap in the lyrccs to your favorite song and then put your name and graduation year on top of it.

Thank Yous Serafin’s favorite cap read “Thanks, Dad!” She said she thought “this was a pretty cute way to show appreciation to the one who had clearly paid for the education.” Thanking those who helped you get to where you are is such a great way to decorate your cap. PLANNING THE ULTIMATE POSTGRAD EUROPEAN

ADVENTURE By Sarah Hansen College Avenue Magazine Graduating from college is a great milestone to pass in a person’s life. It’s something that takes a great deal of hard work and years of time to accomplish. But, the most commonly asked question of recent graduates is, “what are you going to do next?” You could head right into the workforce and get a head start on paying off those intimidating student loans, but you have the rest of your life to work away, so what’s the rush? Instead, why not go on the trip of a lifetime to celebrate some of your last moments of freedom before entering 40-some years in the workforce? A rising trend among gradu-

ated high school and college students is to jet set on a European adventure. This idea of traveling from city to city around Europe can sound a bit intimidating. Backpacking on trains through unknown countries that use unknown languages isn’t exactly something Americans are accustomed to. But, after a bit of careful planning, even someone who has never traveled before can plan the most amazing summer of his/her life in Europe. The first step to planning your trip to Europe is to list out major cities and attractions that you are dying to visit. Then, pinpoint these places on a map and plan your route and means of travel. The easiest way to get around Europe is by using the train system. Train

tickets can also be very cheap if you purchase a Eurail pass. Aubrey Nickell, a recent college graduate who traveled around Europe this summer, said she found, “the Eurail system to be both inexpensive and the simplest way to hop from city to city in Europe.” The next step in the planning process would be to find a place to stay. An option that is both safe and affordable would be to stay in hostels. Although hostels have gotten a bad rep for being dirty and dangerous in previous decades, in recent years, hostels have really cleaned up their act with cleaner, more personal spaces, complimentary breakfasts and full-service bars. They are also a great way to meet other travelers from all over the world,

allowing you to make connections and have more places to stay in other countries in the future. Another very important thing when it comes to traveling is to pack light. You absolutely do not want to be backpacking around Europe and stuck dragging around 80 pounds of luggage. You’ll be annoyed with this uncomfortable situation about three days into the trip. “From personal experience, packing enough shirts to last a week, a few pairs of pants, one coat and one sweatshirt usually was the perfect amount for light traveling,” Nickell said. Only pack the essentials and know what the weather will be like where you are going. Also, keep in mind that you will most

likely be walking around a lot. You may have to walk even more should an unexpected situation arise, such as subway construction or high cab fares. After all of this tedious planning for your trip, it’s most important to remember why you’re in Europe: to have the time of your life. Enjoy every minute of it, and don’t waste a second just sitting around. Wake up at the crack of dawn, and stay out all night. Eat all the traditional dishes and drink all the wine you can get a hold of. Mingle with the locals, and make memories to last a lifetime. But, above all, remember to enjoy every single second of your adventure because you never know when you’ll get an opportunity to do it again.

By Alex Rager College Avenue Magazine Whether you are a style icon among your friends or just trying to get to class and back, graduation is a special day to look your best. Finding an outfit that is both appropriate and stylish can be an arduous task for both male and female graduates. In order to look and feel your best on graduation day, there are some things to keep in mind when putting an outfit together for the big day. For male graduates, it is important to be cognizant of your environment. You will be indoors for the duration of the ceremony with over a thousand members of your class. The ceremony room is bound to get pretty hot, so while wearing a suit would make you look good, the gown is going to undermine your efforts. “I haven’t thought about dressing. Just a gown and cap,” admits Gereon Fredrickson, a graduating psychology major. A long or short sleeve dress shirt and slacks is a lightweight, stylish way to be appropriate on graduation day. Another alternative is to wear a nice shirt and knee-length khaki shorts underneath. After

the ceremony, you can simply change and be ready for pictures and a celebratory dinner. For our lady graduates, it is important to be aware of your environment as well. You don’t want to be in 7-inch heels and a skin tight dress. The heels and tight dress are great for a party, but inappropriate for a day of celebration with family. An appropriate dress for your graduation would be one that is fitted on top with a skater skirt on bottom. Pair that with an appropriate heel, such as a wedge or a sandal heel or a cute flat. If you do not feel like wearing a dress, you can opt for a flowy or fitted patterned top and straight leg slacks with a heel, making for a cute and appropriate graduation outfit option. If business pants are not your style either, an appropriatelength skirt with the top tucked in and a cute belt and heels is sure to impress. So, while you are finishing up your finals and presenting your dissertations, don’t stress about your graduation day. If you follow these tips and take a few deep breaths, the process will be a lot smoother. Congratulations class of fall 2014, you did it!

Despite its year-specific title, senioritis is not a condition reserved solely for senior students. The grumbles of discontent and “over it” attitudes can hit at any time, any year. The signs that you are ready to graduate and finally grab your diploma come in waves. Here are some of the tell-tale signs.

Skipping classes out of spite We’ve all slept through classes, left for an early weekend in lieu of classes or just abandoned the idea altogether because of unbearably snowy days. Yet now, in the haze of graduation-readiness, class and the busy work professors burden us with are nagging mosquitos in our ears. Skipping class or “forgetting” an assignment may hurt us in the end, but somehow it feels like we’re standing up for our own sanity by boycotting unnecessary tasks. Maybe we’ll just be sitting in our rooms bingewatching old TV shows, but it sure beats zoning out in a fluorescent-lit classroom.

Actually applying for real jobs It’s an unfortunate realization that after college we actually have to apply to and compete for real-life jobs. Browsing monster.com or waiting in line at the Career Center to learn about University-affiliated companies are now at the forefront, and what comes after college suddenly seems more important than college itself. actually dress professionally to attend career fairs and view our classmates as competitors in the job market? Time to polish our resumes; the real world is waiting.

Avoiding the Plaza and other busy parts of campus In earlier years, the hustle and bustle of campus may have seemed alluring in a sense. Now, the mere notion of being shouted at, handed things or rushed in a current of students sends uncomfortable chills down our spines. We’ve actually mapped out our routes to class primarily to dodge foottraffic areas. It may require more walking, but at least it’ll be bearable.

Good riddance to ragers The hype surrounding parties and blacking out “fun” simply feels tiring now. Those nights crafted some humorous memories, but gatherings with real friends are more viable weekend plans than mingling with random strangers. As tempting as it sounds, no thanks, ragers – we’re moving on.

Sweatpants on the daily If rolling out of bed and begrudgingly heading to class were commonplace before, then they are a lifestyle choice now. We don’t care about looking cute or trying to put an outfit together. That extra 40 minutes of sleep in the morning and feeling comfortable throughout the day take precedence. Plus, the more comfortable the clothes, the easier it’ll be to daydream in class.
