Letter From

CSU BY THE NUMBERS

15 1870 CSU was founded as the Colorado Agricultural College, six years before the Colorado Territory gained statehood.

If you’re new to CSU or were only able to spend limited time on campus during the past academic year, I hope you’ll take the time to explore. You’ll find that CSU is a place of community and of discovery, a place where your character, commitment, and engagement all matter. It’s a place where you will be challenged by new ideas and new perspectives, a place where you’ll discover a passion for your chosen area of study and will be able to foster and share the ideals you most value.

79

Your educational experience is our highest priority. Learn from your professors, from staff and mentors, from your peers, and from the myriad experiences you will have as a member of our CSU community. We all are here to assist you in reaching your goals, whatever shape they may take. If you need help, do not hesitate to reach out to your instructors or staff. And while you’re here, please be a good neighbor and carry yourself with the pride of knowing you are a valued member of our Ram family.

MOVE IN 2020

Reconnect with your community at the LSC

Colorado State University is at the heart of Fort Collins. Planting our roots here in 1870, we have been a key part of the community ever since. CSU provides an experience for students that we hope will make you proud to be a CSU Ram. It all starts with Move-In Day!

FALL MOVE-IN 2021 To support public health guidelines, including physical distancing, Move-In will look a little different this year. Move-In will take place over a 3-day period between Monday, Aug. 16 - Wednesday, Aug. 18 and arrivals will be limited to 25 residents per building per hour. Specific time slots for each student will be arranged prior to your arrival on campus. If you are moving into a hall, you will receive an email from CSU Housing with directions for how to schedule your specific Move-In date and hour of arrival online at MyHousing. colostate.edu. Once on campus, check in will be easy. Since much of the process will have already been done online, all that will be required is completing any remaining important paperwork and signing to receive keys.

RAM WELCOME 2021 All new students are expected to attend Ram Welcome. Ram Welcome is an opportunity to build upon your orientation experience and begin your successful adjustment to Colorado State University by exploring academic programs, meeting faculty and staff, learning about the many services available to support your college experience, connecting with other new and current students, learning traditions and discovering what it means to be a CSU Ram. Fall 2021 Ram Welcome will primarily be in-person. More information will be e-mailed to students in early August and will become available on the Ram Welcome website.

Find Out More For questions or additional information on Ram Welcome 2021, contact Orientation & Transition Programs at (970) 491-6011 or orientation@colostate.edu. ramwelcome.colostate.edu

The Housing website has additional information on the fall 2021 move-in process, including a list of what will be provided in each room and what you cannot bring to your rooms this fall. housing.colostate.edu/halls/move-in/ housing.colostate.edu/covid-19/

CSU Accelerated Programs: A pathway to graduating in less than 3 - 3 ½ years

A pathway for degree-seeking CSU students to graduate in 3-3 1/2 years!

5 LIFEHACKS YOU NEED TO KNOW WHEN STARTING COLLEGE

The first year of college can be an adjustment. You’re on your own, away from your parents, friends you grew up with, and starting a whole new life. You want to find your place, enjoy your freedom, and just have fun. However, one thing many entering freshmen can lose sight of is that we are here to get a degree. Doing well in your college classes is important. The classes you take in college are getting you one step closer to your future career. It’s important to take it all in and do as well as you can. It can be tricky to balance it all, but here are some tips that might ease some of your stress. These are the five things to know before starting college:

1

CHECK YOUR CANVAS CALENDAR REGULARLY

Over the next four years Canvas will be your best friend or your worst enemy. If you utilize it correctly, it will be a helpful tool to keep track of upcoming assignments and monitor your progress. Being on top of your Canvas calendar and writing important dates in your planner will relieve your stress immensely. Also be sure to check the class syllabuses, which will usually have a schedule of when in-class assignments, projects, and exams are due. This way you will always know when things are due and won’t be scrambling at the last minute to get things done.

2

ATTEND IN-PERSON CLASS

Believe it or not, this can be a hard concept for many college students to grasp. Without having your parents force you to get to school, it’s easy to decide to skip when you feel like it. Even if a class seems

easy, just a lecture, no in-class assignments, it is likely that your professor will prove you wrong. There will come a day when your professor will have a surprise in-class assignment, pop quiz or mention important information about an exam, and you won’t be there to hear it. Just go to class, your grades and future self will thank you.

3

ASK FOR HELP WHEN YOU NEED IT

4

GET INVOLVED

If you’re struggling with a course, get help. Go to your professor’s office hours. It can seem scary and a bit awkward, but they will most likely be happy to help. You can also check out options for tutoring or talk with other students in your class to set up study sessions. Not asking for help with concepts you can’t fully grasp will only hurt you in the long run.

Getting involved in college is very important. It gives you experience to put on your resume and social connections.

University involvement always looks good to future employers. While it can be hard to manage a lot of activities as an incoming freshman, it’s better to get immersed sooner rather than later.

5

DON’T FEEL PRESSURE TO DECLARE YOUR MAJOR RIGHT AWAY

Many first-year college students don’t know exactly what they want to do, and that is OK. Undeclared students at CSU receive academic advisors that will help them talk through their interest and discover what majors and potential career paths would be a good fit. There is also the option to take introductory courses within different majors to see first hand what appeals to you. If you’re unsure of which route to go, don’t declare a major on a whim. Give yourself the time to explore your interests. It’ll save you from the dilemma of having to change your major a year or two into your college career.

Colorado State University’s roots go back to 1870 when the institution started as a small land-grant institution of higher education. Today it has evolved into a world-class research institution stretching across five campuses, eight colleges and 55 academic departments. Landmarks spread across the main campus tell the Colorado State University story and traditions rich in history serve as steadfast reminders that at Colorado State we are proud Rams.

Colorado State University Summer Session 2022: Flexible and immersive

HISTORY

1870 Territorial Gov. Edward

McCook signs a bill establishing the Agricultural College of Colorado in Fort Collins.

1884 First commencement. 1916 The 1,177-acre CSU Mountain

Campus, located 9,000 feet above sea level, is established as a field site for natural resource students.

1957 Colorado A & M becomes Colorado State University.

TRADITIONS THE FIGHT SONG

Fight on you stalwart Ram Team, On to the goal! Tear the (Opponent’s) line asunder, As down the field we thunder. Knights of the green and gold, Fight with all your might! Fight on you stalwart Ram Team, Fight! Fight! Fight!

THE ALMA MATER

Alma Mater Hail to thee, our Alma Mater; Colorado State. Memories are everlasting of this place so great. May thy Green and Gold unite us, loyal ever be. Colorado State, our Alma Mater, Hail, all hail, to thee.

CAM THE RAM

CAM the Ram is the official mascot of Colorado State University. His name stands for Colorado Agricultural and Mechanical College (the university’s former name). CAM 20

is a Rambouillet Ram and has his own troop of Ram Handlers to help him out. Twenty-three CAMs have served Colorado State since 1945.

I LOVE CSU DAY!

In 2006 Gov. Bill Owen signed a proclamation declaring April 18 as I Love CSU Day. I Love CSU Day is celebrated annually on the CSU campus and by alums worldwide.

THE A

The big “A” on the western hillside of Fort Collins is visible from most of campus. It stands for Aggie, CSU’s mascot when it was still Colorado A & M. The “A” was constructed in 1923 and first white-washed in 1924. To this day the landmark is given a fresh coat of white paint annually.

THE CANNON

For decades the CSU cannon has echoed throughout stadiums announcing a point scored at Rams home football games. The

cannon, known as Comatose, is a 1918 ABS French 75 mounted on a 1941 retrofitted carriage. It was donated to CSU in 1952 by the 5th Army and has been in action ever since. And that’s not all. After each time CSU scores, ROTC cadets do push-ups in the end zone: one push-up for each of the total points scored.

THE BORDER WAR

The Border War between CSU and the University of Wyoming is the longest continuous rivalry in each school’s history, dating back to 1899. Since 1968, the schools have battled for possession of the Bronze Boot traveling trophy. The bronzed battle boot was worn in Vietnam by CSU alumnus Dan Romero. Each year ROTC cadets from both schools complete the annual game ball relay, running the game ball from the visitor’s stadium to the home stadium. If you are a top-three point earner, you will receive a special prize.

1970 Old Main, the first classroom building constructed on the Colorado Agricultural College Campus, is destroyed by fire. 1976 CSU achieves Carnegie

Foundation Research I University status.

1979 CSU opens the James L.

Voss Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Currently ranked third best veterinary school in the U.S., it provides care for both small and large animals and houses the world-renowned Flint Animal Cancer Center.

2009 - A two-megawatt, 15-acre solar

array, one of the largest at a U.S. university, is installed on the Foothill Campus.

2015 - CSU becomes the world’s first university to earn a S.T.A.R.S. (Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System) Platinum rating for its sustainability programs. 2015 - Semester at Sea selects

CSU as the academic home for its programs.

2017 - CSU kicks off the football season in its new on-campus multipurpose facility, Canvas Stadium, featuring the New Belgium porch and Iris & Michal Smith Alumni Center.

There is something for everyone! Some sports offer divisions (women’s, men’s, coed, or open) and some sports offer both recreational and competitive leagues. IM Memberships are $10 per person, per semester.

to Tackle

Financial Independence

Psst... You don’t have to bank with a bank.

Written by George Hill,

Director of Financial Education and former CSU Rams football player.

A At CSU, we partner with parents and family members, whenever possible, to support students. While CSU is working to provide an in-person experience for students, faculty, staff, parents, family members and the broader community, we continue to work closely with local and state health officials regarding our campus COVID-19 response. With this in mind, we are providing information about key campus resources – for students – that parents and family members would want to know about in the list of resources below. Additionally, we encourage parents and family members to contact CSU Parent and Family Programs if they have questions or concerns.

WHERE CAN I FIND UPDATES AND INFORMATION ON CSU’S APPROACH TO THE FALL 2021 SEMESTER? This website will continue to evolve

and will be updated frequently with university plans and procedures for Fall 2021. The website includes information on health guidelines, safety, returning to campus, living on campus, academics, transportation and university services. covid.colostate.edu

WHAT IS CSU’S MOVE-IN PLAN IF I AM LIVING IN ON-CAMPUS HOUSING IN THE FALL? Housing & Dining Services’ COVID-19 response page includes frequently asked questions about Fall 2021 including topics such as move-In, dining center operations and what to expect while living in the residence halls. housing.colostate.edu/covid-19

WHAT RESOURCES ARE AVAILABLE FOR STUDENT’S LIVING OFF-CAMPUS IN THE FALL? 30

The Off-Campus Life office is committed to serving CSU students living in the Fort Collins community with rental searches, considerations

for leases, roommates, local housing laws, etc. ocl.colostate.edu

WHAT WILL MY COURSES LOOK LIKE FOR THE FALL 2021 SEMESTER?

CSU will be delivering all learning and academic instruction through several formats to ensure the health of students, staff and faculty. For questions on academics, tuition, course formats, etc. please go to: covid.colostate.edu

WHAT ARE THE HEALTH REQUIREMENTS FOR NEW STUDENTS AT CSU? All incoming students must

complete several health-related requirements, including submitting immunizations records and fulfilling the health insurance requirement. Learn more about these tasks and how you can complete them at health.colostate.edu/newstudent-checklist.

WHAT IS RAM WELCOME?

Ram Welcome builds upon your orientation experience to begin your successful adjustment to Colorado State University by exploring academic

programs, engaging with faculty and staff, learning about the many services available to support your college experience, becoming part of the CSU campus community, connecting with other new and current students, learning traditions and discovering what it means to be a CSU Ram. The Ram Welcome program is a campus-wide coordinated effort that brings the entire campus community together to welcome new students at the start of each semester. ramwelcome.colostate.edu

WHAT OTHER SUPPORT OFFICES ARE AVAILABLE FOR NEW STUDENTS?

s a proud Colorado State University Ram & former student athlete, I spent lots of time balancing school and football. It was only after I graduated I started taking my finances more seriously and learned what is most important for my banking needs. Being a part of Canvas, the Official Credit Union of CSU, I have the privilege to coach college students on financial wellness. With the realities of adulthood on the horizon, here are four ways to tackle financial independence while you are in college:

Find a financial institution where you feel comfortable asking questions. You want a financial institution that will be ready when your needs arise and will help you make the right choices in your financial journey. At Canvas, we’re B.S. (bank-slang) free! We’ll keep communication simple, honest, and transparent; providing guidance and not selling you a product you don’t need.

Making it easy to save. Choosing the right account is important because different types reap different benefits. At Canvas, we heard from fellow Rams they wanted to make it easier to save money. So we created a checking account called Level Up Checking, that helps you save as you spend by rounding your debit charges to the nearest dollar, then placing the spare change into your savings account. Talk about an effortless way to save!

All about automation. Find a bank that offers automation to make it easy to set up checking and savings accounts, establish a financial budget, and setting up automated transfers to help you mindlessly save and pay any bills throughout the month. Take the time to automate your finances with digital tools like online banking and a mobile app!

Future ‘you’ deserves some love. Placing grandma’s birthday money, or a portion of your paycheck, into a savings account will add up by the end of college. Starting the process, even a few dollars a week allows you to create a habit of budgeting and saving. So, when you want that dream car, you’ll be ready!

At Canvas, we are committed to walking shoulder-to-shoulder with you throughout your financial journey. From college student to college graduate, we’ll be here every step of the way to help you afford life.

Gain your financial independence today with Canvas, the Official Credit Union of Colorado State University! Follow us at: /canvasfamily Insured by NCUA. canvas.org Visit canvas.org/disclosures for important information
