Websites have revolutionized the way students choose their courses and professors. Using Rate My Professor and Koofers, the Collegian compiled a list of six CSU professors with the highest scores. Some professors only have a handful of reviews, so in order to make the list more accurate, the following professors were chosen only if they had more than 40 reviews by students on one of the two websites, as well as a rating higher than 4.6 on Rate My Professors or four and a half stars on Koofers. Denise Apodaca: 4.9 / 4.5 stars Department: School of Music, Theatre and Dance

Underclassmen classes: MU100, PIANO100 Denise Apodaca was nominated for the Best Teacher Award in 2015. Journey to peace Nobel Laureate inspires CSU By Selena Rodriguez “Don’t wait for a Gandhi, don’t wait for a King, don’t wait for a Mandela. You are your own Mandela, you are your own Gandhi, you are your own King.” This is the message Leymah Gbowee, who shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 2011, has for the world. During the second Liberian Civil War, Gbowee played a key role in brokering peace within the nation. The atrocities of the war inspired her to become a trauma counselor to former child soldiers. But she wanted to do more to heal the world crumbling around her. Through grassroots efforts, she managed to gather women of varying faiths and differing backgrounds together in a movement for peace. Thousands of women staged pray-ins, nonviolent protests and sex boycotts. Their actions demanded highlevel peace talks which eventually turned the tides of the war. This paved the way for the election of the country’s first woman president, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. Through their efforts, Gbowee, Sirleaf and Tawakei Karman became the second African women to win the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize. On March 6, Gbowee made a special appearance at Colorado State University in honor of International Women’s Day. She drove home the importance of finding our common humanity in the face of great adversity. She implored thecrowd that filled the Lory Student Center Ballroom not to lose faith in one another. Gbowee spoke on her firm belief that we can find justice and we can find oneness if only we put forth the effort. Gbowee didn’t sugar coat the journey to peace. She emphasized that the choice is in our hands. And she acknowledged that this choice isn’t always an easy one. It takes extreme empathy to look outside of your own scope of reality. But, as her story highlights, it pays off.

Little Shop of Physics: 26th year of education through experience Annual open house attracts more than 8,000 attendees for fun with science By Jessie Trudell The Little Shop of Physics is a science-focused group committed to education through experience, most notably through school outreach programs. Located in the Colorado State University College of Natural Sciences, the Little Shop of Physics seeks to find creative ways to share science and hands-on learning to people of all ages and from all different backgrounds, On Feb. 25, the Little Shop of Physics did just that and brought science into the lives of more than 8,000 people at its 26th Annual Open House. Heather Michalak, outreach coordinator, has worked with the Little Shop of Physics for 20 years and says exploration is a vital part of the education process. “Learning is more about experience,” Michalak said. “It’s about showing kids how to explore.” The Open House featured 312 projects, with 25 built this year by CSU undergraduates specifically for the event. Projects were displayed on the third floor of the LSC throughout the ballroom areas and spread into the west balcony for a special event called “Fog Rings,” where

a huge inflatable cannon released fog machine rings into the air toward the attendees waiting on the balcony above. Additional featured projects included “The Dark Room,” which focused on displays such as magnetic field televisions and laser drawing. Other demonstrations included rooms such as “Motion, Waves, & Sound,” and “Electricity, Magnetism, & Light.” “We have about 100 CSU student volunteers in addition to our dozen interns helping out,” Michalak said. “Without them, [the event] wouldn’t be possible.” Adam Pearlstein, assistant director of Little Shop of Physics, said the annual event is usually publicized through a variety of channels. “We reach out to the community, talk to schools and teachers and use social media,” Pearlstein said. “We really try to get the word out that way.” Publicizing the event heavily leads to enthusiastic attendees who often do not want to leave.

Supervisor Development Program off to a great start By Marsha Benedetti

helpful to participants in their supervisor role.

Do supervisors make a difference in the workplace? According to a 2016 Gallup report “State of the American Manager,” supervisors account for almost 70 percent of the variance in employee engagement scores. The Supervisor Development Program at CSU was launched in January due to the important role supervisors have in retention of employees. Created in response to requests from AP Council, CP Council and Faculty Council, the Supervisor Development Program helps new and experienced supervisors expand their skills as effective leaders. Since the launch of the program, over 250 have participated in the foundational class “Mindset for Supervisors.” This class receives scores of 4.5 (out of 5) on being

Summer classes In addition to the Supervisor Development Program, the Office for Training and Organizational Development will be launching a new initiative this summer, The Emerging Leaders retreat, based on Jim Kouze and Barry Posner’s bestselling book The Leadership Challenge. This two-day retreat is scheduled for June 15 and 22 and July 13 and 20 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Tamasag. Registration is free and available online at training.colostate.edu.

CSU takes ‘key step’ to expand HR capacity in efforts to bring change

9

By Pam Jackson The Division of University Operations is taking what it calls a “key step” to contribute to the collective efforts on campus to improve the work life of employees and bring about impactful change. The division is moving Diana Prieto into an expanded role as Associate Vice President for Human Capital, effective July 1, 2017, and the division will conduct a national search for a director of Human Resources. Prieto currently serves as executive director of Human Resources and director of the Office of Equal Opportunity, and she oversees the Office of Training and Organizational Development. In addition, in 2016-17 Prieto served as chair of the Salary Equity Committee, composed of internal and external experts, which was charged with analyzing potential equity issues among tenure and tenure-track faculty as part of CSU’s exploration of salary equity. Lynn Johnson, Vice President for University Operations, says Prieto has played a critical leadership role in HR, and the title change more accurately reflects Prieto’s responsibilities and expertise. “Diana has consistently shown great leadership and commitment, and her contributions have been substantial,” said Johnson. Johnson said the new role also is part of a broader objective and work by many individuals at CSU to improve the lives of employees through several campus-wide initiatives: salary equity, gender equity, employee diversity, the AP framework, supervisory training, campus climate, the status of non-tenure track faculty, living

Diana Prieto wage, shared governance, rising health care costs and affordable housing. “The administration believes creating the position of Associate Vice President for Human Capital, and having Diana lead it, will help us continue to shift our trajectory and make CSU a better place to live, work and learn,” she added. “Given the numerous fronts we are trying to advance on, this is another step in the right direction.” Prieto will continue to provide leadership for Human Resources, the Office of Equal Opportunity and the Office of Training and Organization Development, and says her priorities moving forward will retain a sustained focus on many of the university’s current initiatives. “In the long term, my work remains to create efficiencies and gain effectiveness in the operations of systems that impact employees, and to assist CSU in attracting and retaining talented faculty and staff,” said Prieto.
