DUO 1804 kicks off the UCA’s Fall Classical Convergence Series

Tuesday, Sept. 20, marked the first performance in The Colorado State University School of Music, Theater and Dance’s Classical Convergence Concert Series. The series brings in a variety of classical music performances, including solo artists and ensembles, in order to hone in on every aspect of the genre of classical music.

The Classical Convergence Concert Series will feature seven different artists this year, with performances taking place at the University Center for the Arts and the Lincoln Center. Among the performers are violinists, quartets, percussionists, vocal

ensembles and even a flautist.

This series is largely focused on interactions between the community and the artists. Many of the artists provide hands-on classes at CSU and other various locations around the Poudre School District in Fort Collins. Sessions held at CSU are free to everyone and are not limited solely to students of the University.

To kick off the series’ performances was New York-based DUO 1804. The pair, Daniel Bernard Roumain, also known as DBR, and Val Jeanty, who calls herself VAL- INC, combine their individual styles of classical and electronic music, respectively, to create a revolutionarly and unique sound.

DBR picked up his first violin at the young age of five years old and has been playing and composing music ever since. He incorporates traditional classical sounds into his compositions but also brings in an electronic flare at times that adds something very different to his style of music. Additionally, DBR pays tribute to his Haitian background in his performances, making comments throughout about his roots, as well as bringing into his compositions some Haitian-inspired sounds.

Some notable accomplishments for DBR include having collaborated with artists such as Philip Glass and Lady GaGa, as well as having been nominated for an EMMY for Outstanding

Musical Composition for the work he has done with ESPN. Born in Haiti, DBR’s partner VAL-INC has had a love affair with music for quite some time now. She is the inventor of a style of music that she calls Afro- Electronica. It incorporates chants and electronic music all rooted in Haitian tradition to create a style that is unique and refreshing. She has been showcased at museums and music festivals around the globe, including the Museum of Modern Art and SaalFelden Music Festival in Austria.

Together, DBR and VALINC have a very eclectic sound, making their performance quite engaging and entertaining. From the moment they walked on

stage, it was evident that both musicians have a true passion for what they create.

The concert began with a solo piece from DBR, followed by multiple compositions performed by the pair and a solo from VAL-INC. The stage had a rather simple set-up with just a few speakers, a microphone, stool and VAL-INC’s turn tables.

There was no need for extravagant stage decorations as the music spoke for itself.

The audience seemed to have just as much of an appreciation for the music as did the artists. After DUO 1804 finished performing their first big piece, there was a three second pause in which the audience was taking in see DUO on page 6 >>

A: I knew the minute I saw the Student Media tent at Ram Welcome that it was something I wanted to participate in during my time as a Journalism student at at CSU. So far, I have had so much fun meeting new people on the Collegian.

The 1933 Brewery is hosting a bike ride fundraiser Thursday Sept. 22 at Recycled Cycles.

The fundraiser is a celebration of a new brew that the Fort Collins-based brewery is releasing Thursday. 1993 Brewery and Recycled Cycles are hosting the event.

Two different bike rides will occur at the event, a “mild” ride and a “wild” ride. The mild ride is 12.5 miles on bike trails, and the Wild ride goes around Dixon Reservoir.

Registration will begin at 4 p.m. and the riders will depart at 5 p.m. The event is located at Recycled Cycles at 4031 S Mason Street in Fort Collins.

Registration costs $10 and includes a commemorative jar glass with a free fill, a $5 gift coin to Recycled Cycles and entrance to a raffle.

After the ride, Recycled Cycles will host an after party. The after party will include beer, raffles, an open mic and food from Rolling Stone Wood Fired Pizza.

CSU to charge for learning disability diagnoses Amount charged will depend on individual patient income

In a move financially affecting students, Colorado State University is discontinuing its Learning Assistance Service program.

The program was cost-free - students were able to seek diagnosis as a benefit paid with student fees.

However, with this change students will now pay a sliding fee - based on income - for diagnosis. The fees are calculated by counselors at the initial appointment, based on financial documentation provided by students.

Rhondda Walker, accommodation and advocacy specialist for resources for disabled students, said she did not have a cost estimate, or range of cost, for a single diagnosis.

Previously listed as a program of Counseling Services, the Learning Assistance Service, or LAS, provided preliminary diag-

nostic testing for students who have been experiencing difficulties with learning, focus, attention and visual perception.

If students received a diagnosis with a disability, they were referred to Resources for Disabled Students for further assistance. If not, they were referred to the appropriate resources to help further with their needs.

The program also benefited struggling students after diagnosis through counseling and provided instruction resources for students in areas such as reading, note-taking and time-management.

Requests will now be filtered through Resources for Disabled Students, who will then refer students to the Psychological Services Center for a diagnosis. After this process, resources will be fit for each student’s needs.

While much of the resources available to students remain the same, the initial cost of seeking assistance with a diag-

nosis may sway students from finding help.

“Now it’s a cost, which is unfortunate,” said Walker, “Because I think still there’s going to be students who choose not to follow through because they don’t have the finances.”

The change was confirmed in an email obtained by The Collegian on Sept. 1.

The email, sent from Counseling Services’ Senior Staff Psychologist Dr. Cindy Swindell to her staff, notes the change was necessary for the department in order to keep up with increasing demand of services.

“Counseling Services is overwhelmed with the mental health needs of our students, no matter how we try to keep up with demand,” Swindell wrote in the email. “...While LAS-type services are very important to our students, it’s time for another agency to offer them.”

In an email from Director of Counseling Services Dr. Susan MacQuiddy, she provided an

overview of why the change was proposed.

“Use of the counseling center has risen about 10 percent per year for the last five years,” MacQuiddy wrote.

Even with the demand, she stated that resources are in place to help students. On-call services

are available to students 24/7 both on campus and by phone after hours. MacQuiddy said no students are turned away from Counseling Services.

Other services still available for students include The Institute for Learning and Teaching and the Center for Advising and Student Achievement.

“We want students who are struggling with mental health and stress issues to be successful at CSU and to access our service,” MacQuiddy wrote. “By refocusing only on mental health issues, we’re freeing up additional time to serve our students’ mental health needs.”

Walker spoke about how the change will affect students.

“Of course there’s the cost,” Walker said. “However, it’s still going to be more affordable for a student to use this service as opposed to going off campus to a private diagnostician.”

2016 Marks 100 Years of ROTC at CSU

Colorado State University ROTC celebrates 100 years of service in 2016.

In honor of the 100th year anniversary, ROTC will be celebrating in various ways throughout the year. So far, the ROTC celebrated by having a military appreciation day at the CSU football game on Sept. 10.

At half time, ROTC troops had a ceremony on the field.

“ROTC troops (went) on to the field and had a narrator give a history of the ROTC and CSU’s history, including when women were allowed to join,” said Adelaide Efird, sophomore business major. “The new recruits were sworn in and the band played patriotic songs while the dancers danced to the songs.”

The Border War is a football game against the CSU Rams and Wyoming Cowboys. The two teams began playing each other in 1899 and is a big tradition not just for the football players but for the ROTC at both Colorado State University and Wyoming.

In 1968, a bronze boot trophy was awarded to the winner of the game and continues every year.

The boot symbolizes the ones worn by CSU ROTC leader, Captain Dan J. Romero, during the Vietnam War. Every year, the visiting team’s ROTC members deliver the football for the game at the Wyoming and Colorado border.

The home team’s ROTC members take the football and run it to the stadium that the game will be played at. The trophy is protected and guarded by last year’s winning team’s ROTC members.

This year, CSU’s ROTC members will be protecting the trophy that the won last year against Wyoming. CSU’s ROTC will be able to celebrate their 100th year anniversary during the Border War game since the game will be held at CSU. Before it was called ROTC, CSU created a drill team with Charles Ingersoll, a Civil war veteran and president of CSU, in order to allow students to gain military training and experiences while attending college.

Later on, this turned into the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) at Colorado State University. The ROTC was established in 1916 under the National Defense Act due to World War I. Cadets were introduced in 1927 which helped increased the number of people joining at the time. Cadets were chosen to honor and represent companies and battalions (Colorado State University).

CSU’s ROTC program included a man named General Lewis Walt. After graduating in 1936, he continued to the military and received the honor to be the assistant commandant of the Marines and chief of Naval Forces during the Vietnam War.

In 1946, President Eisenhower signed an order that created two ROTC programs.

ROTC separated into two programs, Air Force and Army. This made CSU one of the first in the nation to have an Air Force ROTC program.

At the time, CSU required all male freshmen to join the ROTC. This changed in 1962 when the University made the program voluntary and remains that way today. Women were not allowed to join ROTC until 1969.

There are 400 cadets currently in both the ROTC programs. ROTC has and continues to attend every sports game at Moby Arena and Hughes Stadium to honor America during the National Anthem. Also, ROTC fires the cannon when the CSU football team gets a touchdown.

“The purpose of the program (ROTC) is to train future leaders of the army,” said current ROTC trooper Hayden Kessler. “It’s a great way to help with tuition

costs if you want to be in the military after college.”

Hayden Kessler joined ROTC because it’s a good compromise between his decision to attend the military or college first. He has been attending college and been apart of the ROTC for little over a year now and said it is beneficial for him.

Price of parking increases across campus in 2016-2017 academic year

The price of parking on campus increased this year by roughly 27.8 percent for faculty, staff and commuter students, according to Brian Grube, the associate director of finance and administration for Parking and Transportation Services.

Parking prices increased the previous two school years, but was stagnant for the three previous to those.

In the 2016 fiscal year, Parking Services made over $4 million in net income from operations. In the same year, the department generated over $7 million in revenue, a 17 percent increase compared to last year.

Over one million of that reve-

nue is from citations and roughly $2.35 million comes solely from student parking permits.

Metered parking generated just shy of $1.6 million in revenue.

Total operating expenses for the 2016 fiscal year total just under $3 million. Almost half of that covers salaries in the department.

The director for parking and transportation services makes just over $100,000 annually.

However, their salary does not differ drastically from other department directors employed full time. Directors for the library make in the range of $87 - $116,000 annually. The director of orientation and transition programs makes roughly $75,000, while the office of financial aid director makes

roughly $125,000 annually.

The revenue generated from parking permits, meters, and tickets across campus serves as the primary source of funding for campus parking and transportation. This means parking operations, maintenance and money for new parking facilities is paid for via the cost of parking on campus, according to a SOURCE article.

In the 2016 fiscal year, under $350,000 was spent on lot maintenance for campus.

Parking on the CSU campus must be self-funded, according to Colorado Revised Statute (CRS) § 23-5-101.5. This is because Parking Services can only receive less than ten percent of its total annual revenues in grants from both state and local

governments combined, wrote Grube in an email to the Collegian.

A master plan for parking expansion at CSU was released in 2004 and updated again in 2012. The new stadium broke ground in 2015. The two projects, though simultaneously ongoing, are not necessarily correlated, according to Dell Rae Ciaravola.

The increase in parking permit prices is not funding the new on campus stadium, Dell Rae Ciaravola, risk and public safety communications manager, wrote in an email to the Collegian. Parking on campus is a separate project from the building on the new stadium.

A permit rate increase was approved in 2015 by the

Board of Governors at CSU, in large part because of economic downturn.

Rate increases are supposed to help fund the parking expansion ongoing at CSU, namely the South College Garage. New technology already available in the Lake Street Garage, which lets commuters know which spots are open or closed, is also funded via increases in price.

Alternative transportation is also funding in part because of increases to parking prices, according to SOURCE. The bicycle underpass set to open at Prospect and Center received partial funding from this year’s price increase.

Celebration of life for CSU CSU Professor alumnus, wildlife photographer analyzes air on Friday pollutants from oil and gas production

A study on oil and gas air pollutant emissions in Northern Colorado was presented Thursday, Sept. 15 at the Air Quality Control Commission meeting.

The study led by Jeffery Collett, a Colorado State University professor and head of the Atmospheric Science department, analyzed air pollutant emissions from oil and gas production.

Collett measured emissions of air toxins, ozone precursors and methane from oil and gas production in the DenverJulesberg Basin, located along the North Front Range. The study documented emissions during fracking, flowback and production.

The measurement of emissions is the first step to analyzing risks to human health, Collett wrote in an email to the Collegian.

“The planned health risk assessment will provide important input to the public discussion concerning potential health risks associated with living near oil and gas wells,” Collett wrote.

Emissions measured included methane, ethane and a wide range of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Measured VOCs included air toxics such as benzene, a chemical found in pesticides.

The study examined new wells along with ones already in production during fracking, and flowback. Flowback is water mixed with clays, chemical additives and dissolved metal ions and solids.

Particular focus was placed on quantifying emissions from oil and gas production sites and from fracking and flowback, which are considered important steps when new wells are completed. Four oil and gas production see pollutants on page 21>>

There will be a celebration of life ceremony held Friday, Sept. 23 to honor Warren Garst, CSU zoology alumnus. Garst passed away July 12, 2016. The ceremony will be held in Morgan Library and is open to the public.

Warren and his wife, Genny, began in Africa and spent 25 years traveling the globe. During their travels, Warren amassed more than 19,500 slides. The slides were donated to Colorado State University Libraries.

These slides are culturally and historically significant to Colorado and the world, according to the library’s website.

Many of the images in the slides could not be recreated today, because of extinction rates and the level of endangered species since the photos were taken.

Just over 1,300 of the slides have been digitized since their donation. The Warren and Genevive Garst Photographic Collection amasses a majority of the online traffic for CSU

Libraries, according to Naomi Lederer, college library liaison.

Garst was a freelance writer in Wyoming when he found an interest in photography. Previously, he worked with oil wells after earning his bachelor’s in mechanical engineering from CU Boulder and served four years in the U.S. Navy during WWII. His interest in photography, and knack for it, found him filming a wildlife series for Disney. It was during this time he began to shoot stock footage of wildlife.

in 1958. They moved to Fort Collins because she was offered a teaching position at CSU. Genny helped bring computers to campus, according to a SOURCE article.

While Genny was teaching, Warren earned his master’s in zoology from CSU. It was two years after his graduation in 1963 that the two ended up on their 25 year stint traveling the globe. The slides the couple donated come from all seven continents.

Ivanka Trump to visit Fort Collins high school Thursday

Ivanka Trump, daughter of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, will visit the Fort Collins charter school Liberty Common on Thursday as a surrogate for the Trump campaign, according to a report by the Coloradoan.

The event is closed to the public.

Liberty Common is a tuition-free charter school for students in grades 7 through 12 located east of the Colorado State University campus. The principal is former Republican congressman Bob Schaffer, whose district included Larimer County.

In an interview with the Coloradoan, Colorado Trump campaign spokesperson Lydia Blaha described the young-

er Trump as “big on school choice and the charter school movement.”

Ivanka Trump is the first major party surrogate to visit Fort Collins for the election season.

Ivanka Trump is the executive vice president of the Trump Organization alongside her brothers, Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr. The Trump Organization is the primary company that handles Donald Trump’s assets and is also run by her father.

She is also considered to be one of her father’s closest political advisors and was the keynote speaker during the Republican National Convention last July.

Ivanka Trump met with female Republican legislators on Tuesday as part of the campaign’s efforts to appeal

to women voters by introducing proposals calling for lower child-care costs on behalf of her father. Among the proposals was a guarantee to provide six weeks of paid maternity leave, which would be financed through savings gained from removing fraud in unemployment insurance programs.

As of Monday, Ivanka Trump is now under the protection of the US Secret Service.

Donald Trump is currently trailing Democrat nominee Hillary Clinton by 6 percentage points according to a poll conducted by The Wall Street Journal and NBC News. According to a Real Clear Politics poll, Donald Trump trails Clinton by 3.7 percentage points.

Former Lory Student Center staff member dies after fighting colon cancer

On the evening of Sept. 18, Merle Dean McElwain, with his loving wife by his side, passed away after a battle with colon cancer. He was 77 years old.

Merle was born to Vernon and Inez McElwain on the McElwain family farm near Willow Township, Iowa, on Sept. 21, 1938, one day after his mother’s 26th birthday. He was the first of three children born to Vernon and Inez.

Merle grew up on the family farm and attended country school at Willow Township until he transferred to the Charter Oak schools in the eighth grade.

After attending high school, Merle enrolled in the Marine Corps where he served in the 3rd Marine Air division and the 1st Marine Transportation division from 1955 to 1958.

After his honorable discharge from the military, Merle spent his early career operating heavy equipment. In 1967, he moved with his family to Colorado where he began

working for the state of Colorado.

He began his long term career of 40 years with Colorado State University at the physical plant with Facilities Management in 1971. As he progressed throughout his career, Merle took a position as the mechanical supervisor and project manager at the Lory Student Center where he remained for 25 years.

Merle possessed an uncanny mechanical ability and during his career obtained both plumbing and electrical licensures.

It was at the Lory Student Center that Merle met the love of his life, Sherry. On June 29, 2002, Merle was united in marriage with Sherry Yeik in the backyard of their home in Fort Collins.

Although a naturally humble man, Merle considered his greatest achievement his children, Chelle, Devin and Rhonda. His happiest moments were spent with his family. Merle’s passion was to be outdoors whether it was hunting and fishing with family and friends or spending time at his beloved Red Feather Lakes cabin. He loved to watch all of the wildlife from his deck overlooking Crystal Lake.

Long known for his mechanical and carpentry skills,

Merle enjoyed remodeling several houses and cabins during his retirement. He always left a special craftsman touch in each of the homes he worked on and they were always “built to last” above and beyond any codes or regulations.

Merle was a member of the Collins Chapter, no. 26, Order of the Eastern Star and the Masonic Vesper Lodge, no. 223 of Onawa Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Inez.

Those remaining to cherish his memory include his wife, Sherry; daughter, Rochelle (Chelle) Teal and her husband, Greg of Loveland; son, Devin McElwain and his wife, Rhonda of Mitchell, Nebraska; daughter, Rhonda Jimenez and her husband, Tom of Fort Collins; brother, Charles McElwain; sister, Lila Nutting; mother-in-law, Lois Yeik; 8 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 23, at Bohlender Funeral Chapel.

Interment with flag presentation will follow at Grandview Cemetery. Friends may send condolences to the family at bohlenderfuneralchapel.com.

America is land of the rich, home of the hungry Rachel Melton @CSUCollegian

The war on hunger has been raging on for decades. By 1968, 10 million Americans were estimated to be hungry; 1 in every 20. In 2012, that number had risen to 49 million. That is 1 out of every 6 Americans suffering from food insecurity, and the ones who suffer the most are our children. 1 in 2 children will have to utilize food assistance programs at some point in their life. That is half of a generation being deprived of enough food to maintain a healthy and happy life. They are being subjected to the detrimental effects of poor nutrition, such as the development of asthma, anemia, obesity, etc., not because of a lack of food, but simply because we don’t know how to distribute our wealth.

Poverty is the breeding ground for this hunger. Not only are food stamps unnecessarily difficult to qualify for, receiving them doesn’t guarantee the provision of well balanced meals.

Imagine being a single mother of two who is recently unemployed. The food stamp gods have smiled upon you and you qualify to receive government

assistance every month. You’re set, right? No more growling toddler tummies, right? Wrong.

Food stamps typically provide you with around $3 a day and will usually run out before the end of the month. What are you supposed to do for that last week? What will you feed yourself and your children for $3? The answer is simple and it’s saturated. The cost of fresh fruit and vegetables has increased almost 40% since 1980, whereas processed food prices have decreased about the same percentage. So with your $3 you can either get a single apple, or 5 bags of potato chips.

Regardless of what you know to be healthy, you’re going to pick whatever will give your children the most calories because it is all you can afford. This is the logic thousands of families across the country must follow because they can’t afford to purchase healthy options. The truly messed up part is that if this single mother gets a job, she is endanger of having “too high” of an income to qualify for food stamps, making it increasingly difficult to provide for her children. No one should be punished for trying to make ends meet for their family.

Non-processed foods are so difficult for impoverished people to attain, and the secret is in the subsidies. The government spends a majority of its farming

funds on surplus crops that are ingredients for processed foods.

The overproduction of these products leads to the decrease of the prices of processed foods, which in turn increases the price of the fruits and veggies, whose farming doesn’t receive as much government funding. The lack of access to these healthy options plays a huge role in childhood obesity; an issue that goes hand in hand with hunger.

Luckily the government is here to save the day with programs to assist children who are lacking the necessary sustenance to help them develop healthily and avoid obesity. These programs include the National School Lunch Program which provides increased accessibility to fruits, vegetables and whole grain, all of which are vital to a healthy development. Over 31.6 million children a day receive these lunches which benefit them both physically and mentally.

Hungry students cannot produce the quality of work they are capable of, and it’s not fair to rob these children of their education simply because of their situation. That just adds to the cycle of the impoverished remaining uneducated, causing them to remain impoverished and repeat. Should athletes be able to major in athletics in order to concentrate on their sport?

College treats athletes unfairly.

Sure, there are great perks to being a college athlete, but there is one area where they face an uneven playing field; choosing a major.

A typical student entering college, whether they already have chosen their major or not, will eventually exert the majority of their academic energy toward the field of study that most interests them. Equally important, they most likely will choose a field that they feel gives them the best odds to succeed professionally.

Some collegiate athletes, especially those attending college solely to play sports, struggle in the classroom and seemingly only attend class because they are required to.

Though there are a significant amount of college athletes who are academically motivated, there are enough who are not to make a point of it.

In 2014 there were 11 Division One football programs that received sanctions from the NCAA for failing to meet

the NCAA’s required academic progress rate. The list included major programs such as Oklahoma State University, UNLV, and New Mexico State University.

It’s easy to argue that for the athletes attending the schools listed, as well copious amounts of other college athletes, sports are a major interest of theirs as well as something that motivates them daily.

Since regular students are granted the ability to expand their knowledge on a topic they love by majoring in it, athletes should be allowed to do so as well by majoring in athletics.

Athletes on athletic scholarships, which often reach six-figures over four years, are practically getting paid to play the sport that they are passionate about and succeed in. So why not allow them to learn more about what they are getting paid for by their University?

It makes absolutely no sense that college athletes would not be prohibited to focus on such an evidently strong-suit of theirs in a classroom setting. After all, an artist can study art. A musician can study music. So why can’t an athlete study athletics?

Of course, even for many exceptional college athletes, the odds of making a steady income from playing sports are stacked against them. But majoring in athletics can educate college athletes on the seemingly endless careers in athletics.

A major in athletics would give these students an opportunity to learn more about the many faces of athletics, such as business, marketing, medical, broadcasting, etc.

Though there are classes on all the previously listed topics already offered at most colleges, a major in athletics would obviously require a student to have more of a well-rounded knowledge of them in order to earn a degree. To elaborate on this a little more, there is a fine line between someone, who, say majors in business and someone who takes a basic course on Microeconomics at one point.

Besides giving many athletes a more desired college education, a major in athletics would also increase their chances of succeeding after graduating.

Recently a debate sparked by David Pargman, a professor emeritus at Florida State University, suggests that athletes should have the ability to major in the sport that they play. Essentially a football player would have the ability to major in football, similarly to how performers can receive degrees in music or theater.

In a lot of ways, Pargman’s argument is compelling. In reality, however, this would essentially eliminate any reason for most athletes to pursue any type of outside education. The NCAA certainly has its fair share of issues, but the one thing it does extremely well is provide an opportunities for young men and women to use their athletic abilities to receive an education that they may not have access to otherwise.

If given the choice, some athletes would probably chose to major in the sport they play, rather than pursuing an academic degree, but that option seems short-sighted.

According to the NCAA, as of last April, there are over 480,000 student-athletes competing in various sports across the country. Of those student-athletes, roughly 73,000 play college football and about 16,175 were eligible for the NFL Draft last spring. Out of the approximate 73,000 college football players, 1.6 percent are projected to make it to the next level.

Simply put, most of these student-athletes need to be focusing on academics, because over 98 percent of them are going to be working day jobs like regular joes. Nothing is guaranteed in this world, especially in the realm of athletics, where your career hinges on health.

These student-athletes need to be prepared for the real world with a legitimate college education, because without it, we would be setting them up for failure.

These individuals have been blessed with physical abilities, and because of their athleticism, they are given an opportunity to further better themselves with a college education while continuing to compete. This way, the opportunity to compete professionally remains an option for the future, but when the more likely outcome results, they are not completely screwed.

There has always been a stigma associated with college athletes and whether they put the work in the classroom in or not.

Obviously there are examples where schools have put athletic success over academic integrity, but the vast majority work just as hard in the classroom as they do on the field.

150 Colorado State student-athletes earned academic recognition for the 2015-16 seasons, meaning they posted a GPA of at least 3.0. Of those athletes, there are 20-plus majors represented, including math, mechanical engineering, journalism and everything in between.

Student-athletes are not defined solely by their chosen sport. These are highly successful individuals, capable of achieving great things. The notion that they should focus solely on athletics is an insult to their intelligence.

In 2016, it is no surprise that these types of suggestions are being thrown out. College athletics, especially the major ones, have become all about the money. The well-being of student athletes has become second priority to what brings home the big bucks. Who cares what happens to these young men and women as long as they win while wearing school colors?

I just hope universities have enough common sense to better ensure the future of student athletes when their playing days are over. Athletics play a large role and provide many excellent opportunities in the lives of student athletes, but a degree in football is about as valuable as a certificate from a clown college.

Colorado State to face big, physical Minnesota team

The Colorado State Rams and the Minnesota Golden Gophers met in week two last season in what turned out to be a hard fought 23-20 Minnesota victory in overtime at Hughes stadium.

This year, the Rams travel to Minneapolis for round two when they take on a 2-0 Minnesota team fresh off of a bye week.

Minnesota holds wins over Oregon State, 23-20, and Indiana State, 58-28.

As a whole, Minnesota returns 12 starters from last season; six on offense, six on defense.

Redshirt senior quarterback Mitch Leidner returns to lead the Gophers on offense. Leidner, who has started 31 games in his career, has thrown for 425 yards and four touchdowns in two games this season. At 6-feet 4-inches and 230-pounds, Leidner is a mobile quarterback who brings a physical aspect to the Gopher’s running game. He has run for 25 touchdowns in his career.

“He’s an experienced quarterback that’s been through the battles,” CSU coach Mike Bobo said. “He’s an accurate passer that’s mobile. He’s got big targets, and he’s got a running game that’s a quarterback’s best friend.”

Leading the Gophers running game is redshirt sophomore Rodney Smith, who has run for 199 yards and three touchdowns so far this season. Last year, Smith ran for 108 yards against the Rams.

Senior wide receiver Drew Wolitarsky, Leidner’s favorite target this year, (12 catches for 178-yards and three touchdowns) also had a big game against the Rams last year, catching 9 passes for 114-yards and a touchdown.

The physicality and size of this Minnesota offense was stressed at the CSU game week press conference on Monday, and for good reason, as the Gophers’ starting offensive line averages 6-feet 5-inches 322-pounds. Couple that with 6-foot 10-inch 275-pound tight end Nate Wozniak, whom Bobo called the biggest tight end he has ever seen on a football field,

and the Rams will be at a significant size disadvantage when on defense.

Minnesota’s offense racked up 435 yards per game in the first two weeks and has been impressive in the red zone, scoring touchdowns on all nine of their red zone drives.

The offense is threatening, averaging 45.7 points a game, but it’s the defense that was talked about the most by the CSU coaches on Monday.

Offensive coordinator Will Friend said that it is the best defense he has faced while at CSU, adding, “They are very good up front defensively and they have a lot of guys that play for them.

They have speed off of the edge and they have size in the middle.”

The Minnesota front seven boasts six players with significant starting experience from a season ago: Defensive lineman Hendrick Ekpe (11 starts), Scott Ekpe (five starts), Andrew Skelter (seven starts), Steve Richardson (nine starts), and linebackers Jack Lynn (10 starts) and Cody Pock (8 starts).

Lynn, a senior standout linebacker, currently leads the team

in tackles with 16.

The Rams got a taste of the physicality of the Minnesota front seven last year, and this season, they expect much of the same.

“Their front seven is great,” CSU tight end Nolan Peralta said. “They got big guys all across the board. They fly to the ball and they are very quick. It’s an exciting challenge for us because we

really get to see how we stack up against guys who are a great front seven.”

The Gophers rank 70th in the country in scoring defense through the first three weeks of the season allowing just over 25 points a game, but the Gophers have swallowed up their opponents running games, only allowing 99 rushing yards per game in see FOOTBALL on page 21 >>

Rams eager for another power-five opportunity

The week one showdown with the University of Colorado on ESPN was supposed to be a statement game for the Colorado State football program.

The team had an opportunity to go out on national television and show the world that the Rams could play with the big boys in Division I college football, and they certainly thought that they were going to compete.

Halfway through the first quarter of that game, the Rams surely had made a statement, just not the one they wanted to make.

Saturday, against the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, the Rams have another chance on a big stage.

“It’s a chance for Colorado State to be seen nationally (and) publicly,” coach Mike Bobo said.

“As a coach, as a player, an institution, as a fan base, you want to play good football teams and you want your team to stack up well against other teams. As a competitor, it’s a challenge.”

The team knows that the 44-7 drubbing at the hands of Colorado left a lot of people searching for answers from this team.

Some questions were answered when the team rattled off two-straight wins after that loss, but those wins came against teams from Conference USA and the Big Sky. This week, it is the BIG ten.

The University of Texas-San Antonio and the University of Northern Colorado are not statement games for a football program.

For a team eager to show that they can compete with power-five conference schools, Minnesota is the last shot this year. “(We want to show people) that CSU football is for real and that we can compete,” tight end Nolan Peralta said. “We did not come out and play our best against CU and the whole world saw that. It’s on us to change people’s minds. Its what have you done for me lately in football, and we are going to take it as an opportunity to show the world that we can play with anybody.”

On Monday, Marty English said that this game serves as the best kind of Barometer test for this CSU team. The Rocky Mountain Showdown was supposed to be the ultimate aptitude test for the young Rams, and it was a test they failed, but this team believes it has come a long way since the season opener.

Saturday provides the team with the chance to show just how far that is.

The fact that this game serves as the first true road game of the season for CSU leaves open the opportunity for an even bigger statement.

Offensive lineman Jake Bennett said that no stage might be bigger for this team than the Rocky Mountain Showdown, so he does not expect the team to

be overwhelmed by the environment. But, it is the first true business trip this team will take this season.

“Going to Minnesota, it’s another challenge at hand,” safety Jake Schlager said. “It’s a good challenge. It is a road challenge for us since we are a younger football team and I think the first true road game will be an experience for us. It will be a good experience to get that under our belt.”

portunity against Minnesota to the 2014 season when the team went on the road against an ACC school and beat Boston College 24-21, and then won eight out of their last nine games to close out the year.

“I think it brings the team together as close as you ever get when you go to the different schools and compete at a high level against bigger teams, or against power-five conference teams,” Peralta said. “What we experienced in Boston College

really brought us together and really set us on that journey to where we were going that season.”

If the Rams want to change some minds while making a statement and set themselves up on a path similar to that 2014 season, it all starts on Saturday.

It just can’t be the same kind of statement they made on ESPN week one.

Over the past two decades, the CSU volleyball team has proven that home court advantage is a real thing.

The Rams have gone an astounding 275-33 at Moby Arena during head coach Tom Hilbert’s 20-year tenure, including four undefeated seasons in 1999, 2001, 2007, and 2008. Under Hilbert, CSU is an unblemished 45-0 against the state’s four other Division I programs at home. From 2011-2014 the Rams ranked fifth in the nation with a .933 winning percentage.

While CSU has dominated its opponents on their home floor, people have shown up in sizable quantities to witness it.

Currently, CSU ranks fifth in the nation in average home attendance at 2,954 per match and been in the top 25 in average attendance every single season since the NCAA began tracking attendance figures in 1986.

On Sept. 9 CSU played No. 5 Texas in front of 6,253 fans, the

fifth highest attended match in Moby Arena history. The highest attended match occurred in 2014, when CSU hosted Wisconsin with a record 7,018 people in attendance.

A correlation exists between a sustained tradition of winning and high attendance numbers.

Although winning and the oncourt product is a major factor, getting people in seats is more than that.

“We have always had a philosophy here where we go into the community and build bridges,” Hilbert said. “We make friends and people get to know our athletes. If you do that enough you’re going to get people to come to your games and if you’re successful and put a good product out on the court that they like then they’ll come back.”

The volleyball team didn’t just show up one night for a match and several thousand people had magically appeared, it has been a long process that has taken time and involved trying to engage new students at orientation during the early weeks of

school, and revamping a season ticket sales plan back in 1999 that has grown annually from about 135 season ticket sales to 1300 this year, according to Hilbert.

“It’s over time,” Hilbert said.

“It’s not just thing that happens and all of a sudden we have a million people here.”

One of the strategies that players have employed this year is to foster new relationships with CSU’s newest students, who also live closest to Moby.

“Right now we’re doing this thing with the dorms to get freshmen involved,” middle blocker Alexandra Poletto said.

“It’s like ‘Adopt-A-Dorm.’ Each of us has a specific dorm where we go to talk to them, hang out, make posters, and try to get them to come to our games.”

The words “home court advantage” are tossed around a lot in the world of college sports.

And, CSU certainly has one of the better advantages in the nation. But, this advantage might be a true advantage for CSU’s players, instead of a disadvantage for opposing players.

“A lot of people think it’s the intimidation factor to the opponents,” Hilbert said. “I don’t think that it’s that big of a deal here because it’s a big place. But, what it really does is give great energy to our team. When your team plays with energy they play freer and they do a better job.”

“It’s so energizing,”Poletto said. “That was one of the main reasons I chose to come here. The support here is outstanding and you can’t find it in a lot of other places. It’s fun to get a kill and look back and see everyone cheering.

It really helps honestly.”

Moby Magic, as some of the players refer Moby atmosphere, is not just an experience for current players and fans, but also a major attraction for prospective players.

“It was a huge draw,” freshman Katie Oleksak said. “With my club I’m used to a lot of people supporting us so I sort of wanted a college atmosphere like that… It just makes it so much easier to play when people are supporting you.”

Playing home matches against teams such as Texas, Ne-

braska, and Wisconsin attract a lot of interest and help get butts in seats. But these top tier programs also want to come and play a high quality program like CSU, in a hostile environment that will test them as a team.

And Hilbert, who has won a lot of matches at CSU — 494 to be exact — and numerous conference championships is more proud of that than anything.

“I’ve had teams from everywhere, the Big-10, the Pac-12 conference tell me ‘Hey this place is as good an environment as any place we’ve seen in the United States.’” Hilbert said.

“Those are things I’m proud of.

I’m as proud of that as I am of winning titles. Because I think that’s really growing the sport.

I love this sport and I think it’s a sport that should be a mainstream sport and not just a niche sport...We (have) a country that loves this sport and it’s growing.

We need to invest in the collegiate programs and it will pay off.”

CSU soccer looking to make some noise as Mountain West play begins

Since the Colorado State women’s soccer team was formed in 2013, the San Diego State Aztecs have ruled the Mountain West. The Aztecs entered the 2016 season as fourtime defending Mountain West champions, but that doesn’t seem to be the case in 2016.

With conference play beginning on Friday, the Mountain West looks like it is up for grabs.

After finishing sixth in 2015, the UNLV Rebels enter conference play in 2016 with the best record of any Mountain West team at 7-2-0. Hot on the Rebels’ heels are Air Force (4-2-1), Fresno State (5-3-0), New Mexico (42-2), and closing out the top five is San Jose State (3-2-3).

After a disappointing weekend in which Colorado State (25-1) went 0-1-1, they enter with the 10th best record, one spot ahead of the defending champion Aztecs (2-5-0) and two spots ahead of Boise State (1-7-1).

The Mountain West preseason coaches’ poll released back in April predicted San Diego state to finish first yet again in 2016.

The Aztecs, who got off to a

somewhat slow start last year due largely in part to a tough non-conference schedule, can’t fall back on that excuse this year.

Having only scored four goals thus far, the Aztecs two wins have come over Cornell and Weber State. The Aztecs have also failed to score in every game they have lost.

The Mountain West hasn’t been kind to the Rams in the previous three seasons. Before going winless in conference play

in 2015, the Rams won only three conference games in the two years prior.

Despite their struggles in years past, head coach Bill Hempen said that his team is ready to take on the conference.

“I feel really good heading into conference,” he said. “More so than even for any games we have played this year.”

Chance The Rapper engages audience with storytelling at Fillmore Auditorium

It was no secret that Chance The Rapper’s concert at the Fillmore Auditorium in Denver was a highly anticipated event Tuesday night. The line to get into the venue looped around the block.

Chance The Rapper kicked off his Magnificent Coloring Book World Tour shortly after the release of his album “Coloring Book.” His sold out show in Denver was among one of the first tour stops.

The doors opened at 7 p.m., though many attendees did not get into the venue until well after 8 p.m.

The opening act, Francis and the Lights, started the show around 8:30 p.m. Francis and the Lights and Chance The Rapper collaborated on the Coloring Book song “Summer Friends,” and while most Chance fans will agree that this song is a hit, Francis and the Light’s other songs are not quite the same.

Francis performed alone onstage, lacking other band

members and instruments. He appeared small compared to the large stage, though he made up for it with erratic dance moves that were extremely similar to when a little kid thinks he can dance. At one point during his performance, Francis simply sprinted back and forth across the stage to off-beat music.

When he first started singing, I honestly could have sworn I was listening to Phil Collins performing the Tarzan soundtrack, but with the weirdest background music ever. His style was very dramatic, and it seemed like he was performing experts of each song as opposed to full length songs. Imagine Phil Collins with hair in a very melodramatic musical about robots that has a lot of hipster beats in it, and you will have Francis and Light’s opening performance. While unique, this act did not satisfy the young audience and really seemed to startle and confuse them instead.

“Is that Drake? Dang, he sounds different in person,” yelled an audience member wearing a bro tank.

Chance himself did not grace the stage until about 9:45 p.m. The curtains opened and his song “Angels” immediately caused the crowd to jump up and down in a frenzy.

Chance is exactly how his albums and TV appearances make him out to be: humble, fun-loving and talented. His vocals and signature “AAHH! AAAH!” did not disappoint, and his dancing was everything I personally could have hoped for.

His performance was somehow just as odd as Francis’, only Chance’s weirdness seemed more intentional and meaningful. The show actually had a storyline with monologues between songs, though Chance’s fellow actors on stage were not human.

He shared the stage with giant, almost Muppet-like creatures, who helped him stay on track and find his way throughout the coloring book story.

The creature that shared the most stage time with Chance was a sassy lion named Carlos who advised Chance to focus on the right girls and embrace his musi-

cal history. During his gospel-esque song “How Great,” bird creatures lined up with him to create a religious bird back up church choir.

His sold out show in Denver was among one of the first tour stops.

The creatures, animated set and monologues gave the show a child-like feel and truly encapsulated what a live coloring book would feel like. He performed hit songs from both albums “Coloring Book” and “Acid Rape,” including a few even older songs so that both old fans and new fans could truly enjoy the show.

Highlights of the show included “No Problem,” “Mixtape”

and “Good Ass Intro.” Fans filled the gap for artists featured in various songs that could not attend, singing the verses in their place.

The audience screamed Justin Bieber’s part in “Juke Jam” at the top of their lungs and attempted all the high notes in “Sunday Candy.”

The show ended with Chance’s encore performance of “Blessings (Reprise).” He had his bird church choir behind him singing and swaying. The coloring book angel that is represented on all coloring book merchandise and advertisements rose up behind him, and the audience sang along to the lyrics word by word with their hands up in a way that can only be described as a religious experience.

“Your blessing is not in this album,” Chance told his audience. “Your blessing is not in this venue. Your blessing is not made of flesh, but it is coming.”

Everyone in the room thought our blessing was him.

How to turn nostalgic childhood games into drinking games

Childhood board games bring a certain level of nostalgia to everyone, and the memories associated with board games are common for people of all ages.

Now that we are all in college, it is time to change the rules and make these lovable games more age appropriate. Here are five board games you can turn into drinking games for a fun game night this weekend: Go Fish This game is not really a board game but more of a simple card game. It is easy enough to play with just a deck of cards and some beers.

The rules are fairly simple. Every time you have to “go fish,” take a drink, and every time you play a pair of matching cards, everyone else has to take a drink. This game is best for friends who do not want to get into a complex game but still want to have fun.

Monopoly Monopoly has been known to ruin friendships for decades, but with this alcoholic alternative, it should be more fun

to play with your close pals.

For this game, you should have an alcoholic beverage of your choice that you can drink a lot of as you will still need to remain fiscally intelligent while drinking.

The rules of this game are not that different from the original game. Every time you land on an empty lot and do not purchase it, you drink. Drink when you land on the following spaces: Chance, Community Chest, Utilities, Free Parking, Just Visiting, Luxury or Income Tax. Risk As one of the longer winded games in existence, it is recommended that you read the rules before you begin drinking and take it very slow. Risk seems to last forever when people are just battling back and forth without ever really getting anywhere, so here are some ways to speed up the process. Bring plenty of beer and whiskey for this one.

This game includes very simple drinking rules that are much more simple than the board game’s rules. Every time you take over a territory, the loser must drink beer. Any time

you take control of a continent, you must take a shot of whiskey.

Operation Arguably the most frustrating game ever created, with its loud buzzer and annoying flashing red nose, this game becomes almost impossible when you get drunk. Try to keep a steady hand. This game can be played with whatever alcohol you prefer.

Every time you successfully remove an object from the “patients” body, you give two drinks, and any time you touch the walls and the buzzer goes off, you must drink.

Tic Tac Toe Here is another fairly simple game that can be turned into a drinking fest. Take a sharpie and draw the letters x and o on shot glasses. Every time you place an x or o, you must take the shot before putting it down.

There is also always the option of simply sipping on your beverage of choice while you play a fun game with your friends. Enjoy the weekend, and drink responsibly.

Living the Alternative: Before you get your first tattoo

College is all about firsts: first roommates, first apartments, first legal drinks, and, of course, first tattoos. Many people come to college and mark the occasion of new freedom with something new and equally as permanent: a new tattoo.

The first tattoo you get is like nothing else: you don’t know exactly what to do, what to think, or what to expect. You understand the permanence of it logically, but you still feel like it hasn’t fully sunken in, the same way you logically know it will hurt but don’t fully grasp it until you go under the pen. But fear not, all of the inked people you know and love were once inkless, and everyone that has a tattoo had to get their first tattoo. Luckily, there are many people out there willing to share their experiences. I’ve broken their experiences into three parts, the before, the during, and the after. So, without further ado: Advice for Before Getting Your First Tattoo Before getting the tattoo is almost harder than getting or maintaining the tattoo. It is the stage of stress, indecision and general unsureness. The process is new, you’re not sure where to start, and there is so much to consider. Your decision, after all, will be permanent.

Before you overwhelm yourself with everything you need to do to prepare, answer the most basic of questions: if you are going to get a tattoo, where are you going to get it?

“Definitely do your research to find a clean, sanitary, up to date place to get the tattoo done,” said Katy Beirise, a pre-veterinary student at CSU. “It’s just not worth it to risk it. If you need convincing, google “tattoo disasters” or something similar. I asked around to see where other people had gone and then did some research as well as visited the place I had in mind before I booked an appointment.”

George Sanchez, an international studies major, had similar sentiments.

“I was nervous at first and I didn’t know what to expect at all,” said Sanchez. “I got recommendations on different tattoo parlors from my sister and called one up. He designed the colors and I went in about a week later. All of this wasn’t really too planned out. My sister and I had talked about getting brother-sis-

ter tattoos for a while and decided on this really cool sun and moon duo, and I got the sun to represent her.”

Making sure that you are comfortable with the shop and the artist is key. The shop will be your backdrop while enduring several hours of pain, so it’s important to feel as comfortable as possible in the space. You should have faith that you are getting a safe, clean and comfortable experience. You will have enough things to worry about going into it, so cross that off your list.

It’s also important to get to know your artist and their style.

If you don’t like the style of the art the artist has produced in the past, you probably won’t like what they put on your body. Also, if you don’t get along well with the artist, you will have an awkward couple of hours in silence as you wince your way through the process. The best artists are fun, talkative and empathetic, but make sure you get an artist who fits your personality and makes you feel at ease.

This leads us to the next important factor, choosing the art itself. Many people are afraid that the art that they choose will not turn out how they envisioned, or that they will be sick of it later on in life. These are valid concerns, no matter how many people tell you differently, but there are ways to avoid the wrong decision.

“Give yourself time to think about what you want on your tattoo,” Beirise said. “Being able to bounce ideas off one of my best friends, who I knew would be honest with me, was so helpful!

The design was definitely still my own, and one that I was so excited to have permanently inked on my body, but having someone I could trust to be honest and willing to give me suggestions was invaluable.”

Emmalin Phillips, a business major at CSU, also had some good advice about picking art that you like, and will continue to like, before the process starts.

“Take a look at the artist’s portfolios and find one that you like the art style of,” Phillips said.

“Next, figure out what tattoo you want to get and where. Try printing off or drawing out what you want and hanging it someplace where you’ll see it a lot. That way you’ll know whether you’ll get sick of the tattoo or not.”

“Also,” Phillips added, “try drawing it on yourself with a sharpie and see how it looks.

placement and type of your prospective tattoo.”

So, now you know where you want to get the tattoo from, who you want to work with there, what you want to get, and where you want to get it. You’re almost done with the process, but there is one more thing to do.

“Once you know where you want to go and what you want to get, contact your artist,” Phillips said. “When meeting with your artist, don’t be afraid to ask questions, and make sure that you love the artwork your artist makes for you. If there is anything you are unsure or nervous about, tell them.”

Working with your artist is key. I had a close friend who

loved her artist’s personality and style, but when it came to his take on the tattoo she wanted, she ended up not liking it.

In the end, the one on her body ended up not being the one she wanted, all because she was too sweet to speak up. Don’t be afraid to interact with your artist and let them know what you like, what you don’t like, what you’re nervous about, and anything on your mind. It’s their job to listen and give you the best experience possible. They are proud of their art and will usually go out of their way to make it right by you.

Getting your first tattoo is nerve-wracking: you are making decisions you have never made

before, but that will have consequences that will stand the test of time. It is a big decision, but don’t worry, everyone who has a tattoo has gone through it. It’s natural to be nervous, to feel like you aren’t sure what you’re doing, and to even feel a bit overwhelmed. Just make sure you lean on your tattooed friends, your local artists and your instincts - and, hopefully, any tattoo you get will end up being exactly what you wanted, or maybe even needed.

NightLife: Fun in FoCo - Exploring the Fort Anna Hoover CSU Collegian

I believe in a healthy dose of competition, especially in relationships. Dates get boring and repetitive when the only option is to go stroll Old Town for something good to eat and to see a movie. Granted, Old Town does have some delicious eats, but sometimes it’s nice to change and actually DO something.

What better way than to take your date to an arcade? A classic tradition, going back to carnivals from... well, I don’t know when exactly. But that doesn’t matter --arcades are a fun way to get competitive with your friends or partners as you battle it out with games like dance or air hockey. I am the reigning champion of air hockey by the way, and proud of it!

There’s also other games, as well as bumper cars, in the arcade area at Fort Fun, just east of Mulberry St. and Lemay Ave. Personally, I got a chuckle out of one of their claw machines. What exactly is the function of a rubber duck, anyways?

Similar to a Dave and Busters, you get a preloaded token card that keeps track of your tickets. It looks like a credit card, which takes away the

awe when you win a giant pile of tickets. Aside from that, the system is the same as any other arcade, you win tickets and you redeem tickets for prizes.

There were a lot of prizes out of our ticket range, so we kept our card for the next trip to save up. I’m saving for a giant stuffed puppy; I mean, look at it -- it’s super cute!

For those that like a western classic, try out their shooting range--complete with skeletons, saloons and sleeping cowboys! Located inside the “train depot”, it might throw you off as the actual entrance is to the right of the bushes. It’s fun to try and uses the same arcade cards as everything else.

There was more than just the arcade. One of my favorite activities to do with friends, family, and dates is putt putt golf. They have two courses: one fantasy themed and one set in ye olde Fort Collins. The par for each game seemed challengingly low, but it’s more fun to compare yourself with friends than worry about the official par--besides, they’re more like guidelines anyways.

ny instead of staring at a screen or wasting time chewing food.

I highly recommend it. Even if you’re not good at it, you get to relax and enjoy each others company and you don’t have to get too competitive.

Although I’ve yet to try all of them, there’s also laser tag, batting cages, go-karts, a “giant slide” and other seasonal activities. There are water boats in the summer to squirt each other with and, coming

this winter, there’s outdoor ice skating. Rental skates will be available. It’s on a small lake, or what some might call a large pond, but it provides one more excuse to drag a date to come and keep you warm when it’s finally chilly enough outside for skating.

One final bonus I actually enjoyed was that they had food (and alcohol for those of drinking age), which was nice to have on hand during a game of

golf or to reenergize after playing arcade games. Granted, it’s hard to play and eat at the same time, but it was convenient so we didn’t have to leave when we got hungry. Overall, it made for a really enjoyable break from monotonous studying.

Trump Foundation more secretive than Clinton Foundation, report says NEWS BRIEFS

A philanthropy oversight group says the Clinton Foundation is more transparent than the Trump Foundation in providing detailed information about its recipients and activities.

While the Trump Foundation appears to meet the letter of Internal Revenue Service disclosure law, the Clinton Foundation has received Guidestar’s “Platinum Seal,” the highest transparency ranking, indicating the nonprofit is providing more information than legally required.

Guidestar, a Virginia nonprofit group, collects and organizes information on philanthropic organizations and shares it in its online database.

During the presidential campaign, both foundations have become political liabilities for Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.

“The two organizations reflect the perceived styles of the two candidates: one systematized, the other improvisational,” Guidestar said Wednesday.

Jacob Harold, the Guidestar CEO, said his group had analyzed the “structure, size, strategy and transparency practices” in response to numerous questions about the foundations — not as a partisan act.

“Guidestar takes no position on elections, and we will not comment on Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump as candidates for the presidency,” the analysis said.

Harold said the Clinton Foundation had voluntarily provided detailed information to Guidestar while the Trump Foundation had given none despite repeated requests.

Guidestar based its analysis of the Trump Foundation on the group’s annual IRS filings, which are required for all nonprofit organizations.

“Imagine you’re walking down the street, you see a homeless person and you feel inspired to give them 20 bucks,” Harold told McClatchy. “That’s the Trump Foundation. Or imagine you sit down with officials in a city and come up with a plan to address the root causes of homelessness. That’s the Clinton Foundation.”

He added: “It’s intentional vs. inspired at the moment. One gets a sense that in a particular moment Donald Trump is inspired by an issue or more likely a person he’s talking to, so he makes a gift in that moment.”

The Clinton Foundation has defined goals around promoting global health, addressing climate change and helping to empower poor women and girls, Harold said.

The Trump Foundation, by contrast, appears to be more scattershot in its causes and the people it chooses to help, he said.

Despite other differences, one trait the Trump and Clinton foundations share is that they are “celebrity foundations,” Harold wrote in his analysis.

“At their worst, celebrity foundations are vanity projects with negligible impact,” Harold wrote. “At their best, such organizations channel fragmented resources and yield extraordinary impact for society.”

Clinton has been challenged on her relationship with the Clinton Foundation, originally established by her husband, former President Bill Clinton. Her

emails, made public as a result of Freedom of Information Act requests, suggested that some employees of the foundation sought to give donors special access to Hillary Clinton when she was secretary of State.

Clinton has denied providing special access to donors while she held the top diplomatic post or even knowing about the foundation employees’ emails.

The foundation also accepted large donations from foreign governments while she was secretary of State. Bill Clinton said last month that the foundation would stop accepting foreign or corporate donations if his wife became president and that he would step down from the board.

The Washington Post and other news organizations have reported that Trump used his foundation’s money to settle lawsuits and that the foundation made a questionable campaign contribution to Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi while her office was weighing a probe of Trump University.

One lawsuit that Trump settled with foundation money involved the 80-foot flagpole he’d

erected at his Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Fla. Following a Washington Post lead, a Univision reporter booked a room Tuesday night at Trump National Doral.

The reporter, Enrique Acevedo, photographed a 6-foot-high portrait of Trump at the golf resort outside Miami and tweeted it early Wednesday. Trump’s foundation paid $10,000 for the portrait, according to the Post.

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman opened an investigation last week into the foundation’s operations. The Trump campaign fired back, with spokesman Jason Miller calling Schneiderman “a partisan hack who has turned a blind eye to the Clinton Foundation for years and has endorsed Hillary Clinton for president.”

Miller also said Tuesday that the Post reports were “peppered with inaccuracies.” He accused the Post of “distracting attention away from the corrupt Clinton Foundation, a vehicle for the Clintons to peddle influence at the expense of the American people.”

Another aspect of DUO 1804’s performance that made them unique was their focus on engaging the audience. On multiple occasions throughout the concert, DBR would speak to the audience about different topics.

Several times during the concert, he shared information about his young son, Haitian born mother and recently deceased father. At

one point during the night, DBR even encouraged the audience to come join him on stage and dance. Though nobody took him up on his offer to share the stage, this gesture alone helped make the crowd feel that much more connected to the performers.

At the conclusion of the concert, the duo opened up the floor to the audience, urging them to ask any questions that came to mind, something that not very many artists can say that they do.

In addition, photographs and videos of the show were en-

couraged by DBR and VAL-INC throughout their performance.

Their goal with this was to be able to share their music with as many people as possible and enable the spreading of their music’s message.

Overall, the concert was a great experience. Rather than have a focus on audience size or profit from the night, it was refreshing to see musicians focused solely on the music and connection with the audience.

Moby Magic, as some of the players refer to the atmosphere at Moby as, is not just an experience for current players and fans, but also a major attraction for prospective players.

“It was a huge draw,” freshman Katie Oleksak said. “With my club I’m used to a lot of people supporting us so I sort of wanted

a college atmosphere like that…

It just makes it so much easier to play when people are supporting you.”

Playing home matches against teams such as Texas, Nebraska, and Wisconsin attract a lot of interest and help get butts in seats. But these top tier programs also want to come and play a high quality program like CSU, in a hostile environment that will test them as a team.

And Hilbert, who has won a lot of matches at CSU — 494 to be exact — and numerous conference championships is more proud of that than anything.

“I’ve had teams from everywhere, the Big-10, the Pac-12 con-

ference tell me ‘Hey this place is as good an environment as any place we’ve seen in the United States.’” Hilbert said. “Those are things I’m proud of. I’m as proud of that as I am of winning titles. Because I think that’s really growing the sport. I love this sport and I think it’s a sport that should be a mainstream sport and not just a niche sport...We got a country that loves this sport and it’s growing. We need to invest in the collegiate programs and it will pay off.”

“If one team can impose their will, as far as their game plan and

Their record may not show it, but the Rams have competed up until this point of the season.

In the same poll that predicted the Aztecs would finish first this season, the Rams received only 19 votes, thus predicting them to finish last for the fourth straight season.

on Friday in Logan, Utah to begin conference play against Utah State (4-4), they will do so with very little expectations something that Hempen hopes will help fuel that help fuel his team.

“We have zero, nothing to lose,” Hempen said. “No one expects anything from us.”

Flowback has the largest emissions typically associated with it. A similar pattern had been previously reported regarding emissions from new gas wells being developed in western Colorado, Jeffery Collett wrote in an email to the Collegian.

Legislation surrounding air quality control is a controversial topic in Colorado. Collett said

strict rules are already in place regarding methane emissions, methane being a potent greenhouse gas. The measured emissions of VOCs that act as ozone precursors will help future plans to reduce ozone concentrations along the Front Range. Currently, the Front Range is considered a region out of attainment with respect to federal air quality standards for ozone.

Between 2014 and 2016, 18 emissions experiments were conducted. Methane emission rates were examined from a variety of different production sites.

The study, which took three years to complete within the North Front Range, is available online. Jeffery Collett is currently traveling and presenting the study’s findings.

Other research conducted by the Collett Research Group within the Atmospheric Science Department at CSU includes the investigation of emissions from fracking, development of new techniques for trace gas measurement and impact of aerosol particles on visibility, according to their website.

CAMPUS CHARACTER Did you know that there are several distinct eras pertaining to CSU’s architecture? Over the years, dating back to the University’s founding in 1870, different campus buildings have been built that each exemplify different eras of design. All info below retrieved from the “Campus Character” section of the CSU Facilities Management website.

The Early Years (1878 to 1910): Characterized by red brick facades in styles that were all the rage during this period, Spruce Hall, Gibbons Hall and the Industrial Sciences Building can be seen today as examples of Romanesque revival and Queen Anne architecture.

The Oval Years (1910 to 1950): The blond bricks of the Administration Building, the Weber Building, the Statistics Building and others were built in neoclassical style out of native cut stone during this period.

The Post-War and Western Expansion period (1950-1975): The Clark and Engineering buildings, the Moby Arena, the Westfall and Durward Towers and others were built during this building boom. They are designed in what is referred to as International Style, which makes use of a limited number of high-end and durable materials to create sustainable concepts like day lighting and better heat dissipation. By 1970, the post-war building boom had more than tripled building square footage across campus.

The Pedestrian Campus period (1975-2005): CSU’s 1970 Ultimate Master Plan laid out a vision for these 35 years of development, aiming to systematically remove vehicular streets and parking from the core of campus and transform these areas into pedestrian-oriented malls, courtyards and plazas. The CSU Tree Planting Program was begun, and buildings like Yates Hall and the Natural and Environmental Sciences Building were erected.

The Current Era (2005-present): 2005 marked the beginning of one of the most prolific building booms in Colorado State University history.

Their aesthetic is inspired by the existing campus buildings from previous eras, coupled with sustainable building initiatives and a continued desire for a pedestrian-oriented campus. There are currently 21 new buildings and renovations on campus, including the Lory Student Center renovation, the refurbished University Center for the Arts, the Academic Village and the Scott Bioengineering Building. Also built was the CSU Todos Santos Center in Mexico. More projects are still to come during this building boom, including the new medical center, the Chemistry and Biology Buildings, and the Sonny Lubick Stadium.
