The Apache Trail—modern day AZ Route 88—begins in Apache Junction, making it the gateway to outdoor scenery and adventure. Following the old stagecoach and supply wagon route from the Phoenix area east through gold country, “the trail” quickly reaches Goldfield, a resurrected ghost town that was once a boomtown during the gold rush of the late 1800’s. Stroll down Goldfield’s Main Street and explore its many shops and historic buildings. Tour the historic Mammoth Gold Mine and visit the Goldfield Museum. Pan for gold, take a ride on Arizona’s only narrow-gauge train or witness an old west gun fight performed by the famous Goldfield Gunfighters! Spend a fun-filled day, rich in wild west history. elcome to the Superstition Mountain Region of Arizona and the east valley communities of Apache Junction, Gold Canyon, and East Mesa. The Apache Trail/Superstition Mountain Area’s miles of desert scenery, trail laced canyons, jagged peaks, and sparkling desert lakes offer something for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts of any age.
Continuing east, the Trail soon reaches Canyon Lake and the old stagecoach stop at Tortilla Flats, a remnant of the authentic old west. Thereafter, the Trail reverts to a dirt road with hairpin turns and steep cliffs offering scenic overlooks and photo ops as it passes Apache Lake and approaches Roosevelt Lake, nestled at the foot of the Superstition Mountain Range, within the Tonto National Forest. Several breathtaking desert lakes, including Canyon, Apache, Saguaro, and Roosevelt Lakes, feature boating, water skiing, fishing, and camping. Sternwheeler cruises on both Canyon Lake and Saguaro Lake offer passengers up close views and vistas of the Salt River’s rugged canyon systems. Visitors traveling the Apache Trail may also explore the Superstition Mountain Museum, which showcases the rich history, geology, archeology, and artifacts of this dynamic region. With a plethora of Native American, natural history, and geology exhibits, this attraction is ideal for all ages.
Experience the striking year-round beauty of the Sonoran Desert, home to osprey and red tail hawks, bobcats and puma, coyotes and even a few black bear. Watch for wild horses and bighorn sheep while exploring its many hiking or off-road trails. In spring, cactus blossoms and colorful desert wild flowers paint the slopes, where stately saguaro cacti rule the Superstition Range, while summer visitors may witness lightning storms lashing the mountain heights. Occasional winter snowfalls dust the surrounding peaks, back dropped by blue skies and blazing sunsets. In addition to the outdoor experience, Apache Junction hosts family friendly special events throughout the year. The annual Veterans Day Parade honors America’s bravest as part of the Festival of the Superstitions. Take a drive out US Route 60 to the annual Arizona Renaissance Fair or the beautiful Boyce Thompson Arboretum. The Apache Junction Performing Arts Center plays host to many musical performances throughout the winter season and our award-winning Lost Dutchman Marathon has been featured as one of the best small marathons in the country. Residents also take pride in numerous fine golf courses, including the award-winning Gold Canyon Golf Resort. Everyone’s first stop should be the Apache Junction Chamber of Commerce Visitors Center, located at 567 W Apache Trail, for helpful maps and brochures to local activities, dining opportunities, and accommodations. t doesn’t get any better than this. In the shadow of the majestic Superstition Mountains, the Apache Junction Chamber of Commerce represents a diverse group of businesses located in a varied geographic region extending east of the metropolitan Phoenix area in Pinal County. In the early 1960s, a flourishing business community was forming along the Apache Trail. In June 1960, the Apache Junction Chamber of Commerce incorporated for the purpose of “fostering and promoting social, economic, commercial, industrial, agricultural and civic interests of the area of Apache Junction, Pinal County, Arizona, and its trade area.” As with most chambers of commerce, business leaders felt the need for representation as a business community, and for a group to promote the thenunincorporated community of Apache Junction. Today, the Apache Junction Chamber partners with federal, state and local entities, community organizations, and the business community to create an environment that is attractive to positive economic growth and opportunities. With the support of our members, the Chamber will continue to represent their interests, develop programs that give value to their membership, and give members the needed support that allows them to grow and prosper. Celebrating
nearly 60 years in operation, the Chamber offers benefits and advocacy for nearly 475 Chamber members. Serving the Apache Junction Superstition Region area including Apache Junction, Gold Canyon, East Mesa, and beyond, the Chamber facility also houses the Apache Junction Visitor Center. This Arizona Office of Tourism designated visitor center accommodates over 35,000 visitors annually while receiving thousands of phone calls and distributing information for relocation and tourism. The Apache Junction Chamber is focused on giving the business community the opportunity to affordably advertise and network while advocating for business on a local, state, and federal level. The EVCCA (East Valley Chamber of Commerce Alliance) represents more than 7,500 member firms from the Apache Junction, Carefree/ Cavecreek, Gilbert, Mesa, Queen Creek, Scottsdale and Tempe Chambers of Commerce. APACHE JUNCTION VISITOR CENTER
T
he Apache Junction Chamber of Commerce at 567 West Apache Trail is an officially recognized Arizona Office of Tourism Visitor Center. With over 35,000 visitors coming through the center every year, the facility is the sixth most visited center in Arizona. The quality customer service, provided by a team of four staff and 20 volunteers, gives this center a fantastic reputation among visitor centers. The depth and breadth of information available makes it a one-stop shop for tourist information. Apache Junction is the gateway to fantastic outdoor tourism opportunities to the east and a cosmopolitan culture to the west. For both visitors and residents, the Apache
Junction Visitor Center provides a 3,600 square foot facility full of local business information, along with multiple racks of Arizona tourist information. The facility features a wall of current event notices and attractions in the area. Complete with full AV capabilities, the conference room in the visitor center is available for your next meeting for a nominal fee. If you are looking for fun, something to eat, a particular specialty item, relocation information or the perfect place to relax, stop by the Apache Junction Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center and check out what we have to offer.

he Apache Junction Chamber of Commerce Ambassador Program consists of an exclusive group of business professionals who serve as advocates for the Chamber and business community. They actively attend Chamber events and Ribbon Cuttings which welcome new businesses and help them thrive. im Edwards was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019, and was recognized at the Volunteers Appreciation Dinner in April.
Jim grew up in northeast Missouri, attended and graduated from Moberly Area Community College and upon graduation entered the U.S. Army for a two year tour.
After separation from the U.S. Army he attended and graduated from Northeast Missouri State University, now Truman State University, with degrees in Business later doing graduate work at Northeast and the University of Missouri. Jim taught at the high school, community college, and senior college level during his teaching career. Jim and his wife Pat came to Arizona as winter residents in 1998 and moved to Arizona in 2005. Volunteer opportunities for Jim have included 16 years as an instructor with the AARP Driver Safety Program, many years in a variety of capacities with Desert Chapel United Methodist, and 20 years with the Apache Junction Chamber and Visitor Center. Jim is the key component of our Visitor Center, managing the operations of the center. Our volunteers appreciate the opportunity to learn and share information with the thousands of visitors that pass through the doors each year. Jim is honored to be recognized for his many years of service.

n the 1880’s, two important events happened; the Apache chief Geronimo surrendered to the U.S. Army and gold was discovered. Once word got out about the gold, a boomtown called Goldfield was established. Within five years however, the picture had changed; the gold was played out and the town deserted.
Early in the 1900s the Mesa-Roosevelt Road (later named the Apache Trail) was constructed, followed by a large dam on the Salt River. With the Roosevelt dam in place, water and power were accessible and growth began in earnest in the valley below. With that, Arizona’s first governor, George P. Hunt, planned a road that would run between Phoenix and Globe and the new highway opened in 1922. George Cleveland Curtis, a traveling salesman from Utah, also arrived in 1922. He set up a tent and started selling water and sandwiches to people traveling the dusty roads. Curtis realized his good fortune to be so well positioned. He filed a homestead claim and poured the foundation for a building that would become the Apache Junction Inn. When tourists began to winter in the area because of wonderful dry air, mild temperatures and beautiful scenery, his dreams began to come true. Curtis understood that with the influx of winter visitors would come the need for attractions so he applied for a permit to operate a zoo. He, along with a chimpanzee named Jimmie, started Arizona’s first zoo in the 1930’s and began to add animals until he had established a considerable collection.

In 1945, he sold his thriving business to Jack and Beverly Anderson, whom most consider the founders of AJ. In 1959, construction began on a movie set to promote the area to the film industry. With its breathtaking backdrop of the Superstition Mountains, Apacheland Movie Ranch became a popular location for western movies and the stars who enjoyed filming there. After surviving two fires, Apacheland closed in 2004. Apache Junction became an incorporated city in November 1978. Since then it has grown from a small town with a fascinating history to a city with an exciting plan for its future.

THE HISTORY OF LOST DUTCHMAN DAYS

The first Lost Dutchman Day was held on January 23, 1965 and was a very successful, with

n November 1964, the Apache Junction Chamber of Commerce launched plans to sponsor a public event called Lost Dutchman Day. It would be a one-day event held on January 23, 1965 at the Bayless shopping center and the Superstition Inn. The events would include a pancake breakfast, equestrian competition, the Junior Chamber of Commerce sponsored barbeque and an art show sponsored by the Mesa Art League. The Red Mountain Ranch was set to put on an exhibition of horse riding and there would be a greased-pig contest for the children. Any child catching a pig got to keep the pig. Other plans included a street dance, street carnival, sidewalk sales, and an exhibit of rodeo tricks. A fast-draw exhibit by the Colt.45 Peacemakers from Scottsdale and Apacheland Raiders from the Apacheland movie studio were booked. At that time, there was a small rodeo grounds just south of the Apache Trail near present-day Broadway Road. The Chamber members hoped this would become an annual event and extend to more days of fun.

The event grew larger as the years went on and is now the largest community event held in Apache Junction Today, approximately 25-30,000 people attend the multiple-day event, which spreads across the community in several different locations. The event now includes a golf tournament, carnival, rodeo, parade, Johnsonville Brat&Beer party, dinner and dance, pageant and art show.
