How to reduce the risk of wildfire
DCRanch.com lists several resources to help residents safeguard their family and the community from the risk of wildfire. As a reminder, areas designated as NOS (Natural Open Space) or NAOS (Natural Area Open Space) should not be trimmed, thinned, or cleared without prior authorization, as these areas require careful consideration based on individual site conditions. While fire safety is a critical concern, it’s important that actions taken to mitigate risks are carried out by trained professionals to avoid unnecessary damage to both the environment and property values.
Residents may schedule a home safety visit with the City of Scottsdale’s Fire Prevention Division for expert guidance on how to effectively reduce potential hazards and safeguard their property.
In the case of a nearby wildfire or emergencies that potentially threaten the community, DC Ranch will send emails and text messages to keep residents up to date. Visit DCRanch.com/StayConnected to sign up.
Maintenance Services Department looks ahead
The Ranch Association’s professional management team is responsible for initiating, planning, executing and completing all reserve projects. There is $2.3M budgeted for neighborhood and Ranch Association reserve projects in 2025. Some projects may get deferred due to timing and/or if life expectancy of the assets can be extended longer than anticipated.
New Board members announced at Annual Meeting
The Ranch Association Annual Meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 1 at 6 p.m. This important meeting will provide residents with an overview of key projects and policy changes the Ranch Association undertook in 2024, updates on developments in and around DC Ranch, as well as the announcement of newly elected Directors.
Holding an open house?
Prior to a showing, all open houses in DC Ranch must be registered with the Ranch Association by filling out a form on DCRanch.com. Open houses may be conducted within the community between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. The Ranch Association assists with marketing open houses by providing directional maps at all manned and unmanned gates. At unmanned gates, the maps are located in the mailbox directly below the gate callbox. For questions, call the Realtor Hotline at 480.513.1500 or email realestatehelp@dcranchinc.com.

Plant enhancements and tree replacement
The Ranch Association Landscape Team maintains the landscape in all common areas of DC Ranch. Along with the day-to-day maintenance and upkeep, this also includes plant enhancements, turf renovation and tree replacements that are needed throughout the year.
Playground structure renovations
As part of preventative maintenance for all park playground structures and equipment, a safety inspection is conducted twice each year. During these inspections, safety compliance is reviewed and recommendations are provided for any needed repairs.
Signage
There are over 2,500 signs that DC Ranch is responsible for repairing and updating. In 2025, several neighborhoods will see damaged or faded sign blades updated to meet the sign standard.

DC Ranch Charts a Bold Course with DCR2025 Strategic Plan
By Jona Davis | Community Council
Since its inception, DC Ranch has been committed to maintaining its desirability, fostering a strong sense of community, and ensuring premium home values. Recognizing the need for structured, long-term planning, the community launched its first strategic initiative, DCR2020, in 2016. Now, with an eye toward the future, DC Ranch has undertaken a comprehensive refresh of that plan through the development of DCR2025.
Rather than reinventing the wheel, DCR2025 sought to test and refine the existing framework. The eight Standing Principles—core values guiding the community’s direction— remain the foundation, while the six Strategic Initiatives were re-evaluated to ensure continued relevance. The objective was clear: assess their validity, confirm alignment with residents' needs, and refine priorities for the next three years.
A COLLABORATIVE APPROACH TO PLANNING
A crucial element of DCR2025 was community engagement. Douglas Griffen, founder of Advanced Strategy Center (ASC) and facilitator of the original DCR2020 sessions, led a series of interactive discussions. The sessions were professionally moderated, virtual, and concise— lasting just one hour—allowing for broad participation while efficiently gathering feedback.
Residents, stakeholders, boards and team members were asked to reflect on DC Ranch’s present and future, evaluate the Standing Principles and Strategic Initiatives, and identify key areas of focus. The resulting insights
were compiled into a high-level summary and action plan presented to the Community Council and Ranch Association Boards in January 2025. Both Boards of Directors have made a strong and consistent commitment to the implementation of the strategic plan.
KEY FINDINGS AND STRATEGIC FOCUS AREAS
An overwhelming 73% of residents felt that the current six overarching Strategic Initiatives provided a comprehensive framework for the future. As a result, the Strategic Initiatives remained in place but the strategies (the overarching actions taken to achieve the long-term initiative) and the targets (specific, measurable milestones or results that need to be reached to indicate progress towards the strategy) were refreshed. Each strategy listed below includes 2-3 targets designed to guide progress over the next three years.
STRATEGIC INITIATIVE 1 FURTHER DEVELOP AN AMENITY-RICH COMMUNITY
Regularly evaluate and update amenities and programs/events to foster participation, sustainability and value and ensure alignment with resident interests.
Evaluate and pursue Facilities and Amenities Master Plan to establish an approach for updating amenities and enhancing physical assets.
STRATEGIC INITIATIVE 2 CONTINUE TO INVEST IN HEALTH, WELLNESS AND ACTIVE LIFESTYLE
Structure and align health, wellness and fitness programming to best serve community needs.
Enhance and promote use of the path and trail system within the community and increase awareness of its connectivity with other public trail systems including the McDowell Sonoran Preserve.

Course Plan

STRATEGIC INITIATIVE 3
IDENTIFY AND POSITION DC RANCH FOR THE TARGET BUYERS OF THE FUTURE
Identify and pursue service, amenities, and programs that will both serve current residents and are highly attractive to future buyers.
Launch a clear and compelling education campaign with current and future homeowners that highlights what differentiates DC Ranch from other communities.
Foster strong collaboration and maintain a feedback loop with Scottsdale real estate agents.
STRATEGIC INITIATIVE 4
INVEST IN INFRASTRUCTURE AND TECHNOLOGY FOR DC RANCH ADVANCEMENT
Ensure all DC Ranch technologies and systems are up-to-date, highly functioning, and effective in meeting the needs of the organizations and residents.
Ensure robust reserve and capital plans are developed, funded, updated, communicated and implemented so DC Ranch remains well-maintained and in excellent condition.
STRATEGIC INITIATIVE 5
FOSTER THE SUCCESS OF THE COMMERCIAL PROPERTIES
Introduce and foster awareness of the commercial and corporate center businesses to residents and non-residents.
Inform and engage commercial and corporate centers regarding community -wide standards.
STRATEGIC INITIATIVE 6
POSITION DC RANCH AS ENVIRONMENTALLY SUSTAINABLE FOR THE FUTURE
Encourage use of alternative energy sources and best practices throughout DC Ranch.
Implement and maintain water conservation practices and programs throughout the DC Ranch community.
Foster a strong partnership with the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy to preserve the natural desert environment.
Gain awareness of and foster compliance with local, state, and federal regulatory requirements related to the environment to prevent violations and establish DC Ranch as a model community for environmental commitment.
NEXT STEPS FROM PLANNING TO ACTION
With clear direction established, the next phase of DCR2025 involves mobilizing internal teams from both the Community Council and Ranch Association to bring the plan to life over the course of the next three years. As DC Ranch moves forward with DCR2025, the community remains committed to thoughtful growth, responsive governance, and a high quality of life. With a strategic vision in place and an engaged resident base, DC Ranch is well-positioned for a vibrant and sustainable future.
Visit DCRanch.com/DCR2025 for more details, including full descriptions of the Initiatives, Strategies and Targets.

Seizing opportunity is the mark of any good entrepreneur. When a space in the center of Market Street became available, William Nasralla took it as a sign to expand his luxury fashion boutique to reach women. With several successful businesses under his belt, Nasralla isn’t new to the fashion world—or DC Ranch.

As the owner of DaVinci Luxe, an upscale men’s fashion boutique located further up Market Street, many women have visited the store with their significant others and walked away wanting the same level of quality clothing and accessories. “I decided it was time to bring a little of Monte Napoleon in Milan and Rue Faubourg St. Honore in Paris to North Scottsdale,” says Nasralla. Inspired by Hermes, he offers a mini version of the store with one-of-a-kind pieces that he created.
The concept of Arpesi took many months to put together. Nasralla worked with small artisanal factories in Italy to pick fabrics and create his own designs to his specifications. The process included creating handprinted scarves, beautiful silk shirts, a collection of women’s perfume from Grasse, and handmade leather goods. He proudly displays a line of handbags made with exotic skins like python, crocodile and ostrich.

Nasralla’s passion for color and the finer things in life are evident from the moment you step through the door. He studied textile and fashion design and went on to apprentice with some of the world’s best designers, including Emilio Pucci in Italy and Pierre Balmain in Paris. “After 45 years of dressing men, I’m making women happy.” And with a smile he adds, “Why not?”
This spring the store features fresh pastel colors and lightweight jackets for year-round layers. “The opening has been a success. Women tell me it’s like shopping at a high-end boutique in Europe without the crazy prices,” says Nasralla. The store also carries a selection of menswear items and custom tailoring is available on site. Treat yourself to something that’s truly original!

Oral history project takes shape
By Nicole Richard | Historic Committee
Oral history is a technique for generating and preserving original, historically interesting information. This primary source material is gained through personal recollections from members of the community who have been here since the beginning. During the celebrations of DC Ranch’s 25th year, the Historic Committee realized that the numbers of remaining original or early residents were declining with approximately 200 still living in DC Ranch. Once people move on from this community, they take their memories with them. The committee stepped up and began to formulate a plan to capture their stories last spring. During the course of each 30-minute conversation, many highlights were captured and here are just a few.
The Scottsdale Historical Society has graciously loaned EE Brown on Horseback at the Upper Ranch painted by Lotan Lotan during the ranch's heyday in the 1950s, for display at Desert Camp Community Center through the end of the year. The Historic Committee is delighted to share this piece with the DC Ranch community that portrays the working cattle ranch that once dominated the landscape.

All of the residents interviewed thus far have extolled the thoughtfully designed path and trail system which highlights the real draw of the community—majestic views of the McDowell Mountains. Marianne Victor shared:
I’m a walker and a bike rider, and it's a rare experience to pass anyone on the street who doesn't wave or smile or say hello. It feels neighborly, and we did not want to be in an over 55 community. We wanted diversity, we wanted families. We wanted what we call normal living. And I liked the feeling of community. The walking paths, whoever thought about this, how this connects people was a brilliant idea.
Don Ruff, the first DC Ranch resident, remembered the very day that he and his family moved in:
The day we were moving in—November 27, 1997—which is more than 26 years ago. A car pulls up, the movers were there, moving furniture in and stuff. And you don’t like any interruption, usually when that’s going on. Anyway, this car pulls up, and the executive from DMB gets out, and also the ranch manager, I forget who it was at the time. And they came in to welcome me to the community as the first resident, and they presented me with a personal laptop—not a laptop —a personal computer as a thank you.
In fact, it was my first only computer, it was a compact, and so that sticks in my memory always.

Encounters with wildlife was also a major theme. Karen Engelbardt enjoys frequent visitors:
I continue to have Western screech owls that … like my backyard. And they hang out and they come to drink and they use the nest box and they have babies.

These interviews also give us a chance to know our neighbors better. We learned about Michael Langston’s service to our country.
I received a congressional appointment to the Air Force Academy in 1963. And that’s when it was twice as hard to get in there as it was to get into Harvard, by the way. And so, I went there. I threw up like five of the six orientation jet rides and thought, I don’t want to be a pilot. And again, a mentor said, when you’re flying the jet, you won’t get sick. And I did that, and I became, actually, if I brag a little, quite good at that. And I was Top Gun winner three times in the Pacific, and I flew combat in Vietnam for a year, then the Philippines, and then I became a fighter squadron commander out at Luke Air Force Base on the west side. Then they sent me off to the Pentagon and I served my country there for three years and then I retired.
These stories will live on in the newly-established archive and will be made available for generations to come.
Spring 2025 interviews are currently underway! Please consider sharing your story. Email history@dcranchinc.com to get started.

Now in its 14th year, the Scottsdale Jazz Festival aligns with UNESCO’s International Jazz Day, this time paying a special tribute to legendary musician and producer Quincy Jones, who died in November. Organized under the visionary leadership of William “Doc” Jones, the festival continues to cement Scottsdale’s reputation as a vibrant cultural destination.
Set against the verdant backdrop of Scottsdale Civic Center, this year’s festival promises to be a spectacular celebration of jazz in all its forms. Enthusiasts will experience a dynamic lineup, featuring celebrated artists, such as Richard Elliot and Rick Braun, who will perform together as the electrifying duo RnR. Dan Pinson, a woodwind master and music educator, will also appear at the festival with his All-Star Band, featuring David Baradic, a former pianist with the Quincy Jones Orchestra, two-time Grammywinning bassist Mel Brown and John Herrera, a Grammy-nominated producer and drummer.
The stage will also welcome Carlos Rivas Y Mexsal, featuring Luisito Rosario, and Nayo Jones of the Nayo Jones Experience, whose soulful voice and captivating presence have frequently dazzled Scottsdale audiences.
“For almost a decade, Scottsdale Arts and the Scottsdale Civic Center campus have hosted this important annual event,” said Dr. Gerd Wuestemann, president and CEO of Scottsdale Arts.
