DC Ranch is looking good thanks to the efforts of landscape crews who have been sprucing up common areas, parks, paths, trails and streetscapes throughout the community. More than 3,000 new plants and trees have been added around the Desert Parks and Desert Camp villages. A special revegetation project was also completed in the Camelot Haciendas neighborhood along the trail system. In the coming weeks through mid-April, focus will be directed to the mailbox areas, intersections and neighborhood entrances in the Country Club village as well as all parks in the Windgate and Horseshoe areas of Silverleaf. Streetscape improvements are scheduled for the Sterling Bungalows in Silverleaf. As we move into May, improvements and erosion repairs will be made to the path system along Pima Road. After planting season, landscape crews will focus on maintenance and storm clean up as the monsoon season approaches in mid-June.

New Ranch Association executive director takes the helm

D

arren Shaw joins the DC Ranch team this month as executive director of the Ranch Association, bringing 30 years of large-scale community management experience to the community. His experience includes overseeing community associations, golf and country clubs, and food and beverage operations. Most recently, he served for 10 years as general manager at The Villages Golf and Country Club in San Jose, Calif. Shaw is an active member of the California Association of Community Managers (CACM) and one of only a few to achieve its premier certification: Master of Community Association Management (MCAM). He received additional designations for large scale management and active adult community management from industry associations, including the Community Association Institute (CAI) and Community Managers International Association (CMIA).

Shaw was an invaluable resource for CACM as a subject matter expert, course instructor, speaker, and law

journal guest editor. He also served on the CACM Board of Directors and on its Legislative and Legal Steering committees until moving to Scottsdale.

Prior to The Villages, Shaw was general manager of the Tahoe Donner Association, a resort and golf community of 6,400 homes near Lake Tahoe, Calif., where he also managed downhill and cross country ski areas and programs. He also spent four years in the U.S. Navy.

Now, as he settles in to his new role, Shaw tells Ranch News about his main priorities as executive director, and what he is most looking forward to about working on the Ranch.

Welcome to DC Ranch! Have you and your wife, Maria, had a chance to settle in and enjoy Scottsdale’s beautiful spring weather? We enjoy the outdoors and certainly like what we’ve seen during our visits. We hope to experience the best that Arizona offers after we settle in.

I’ve always been attracted to Arizona, but for one reason or another have never made the decision to live here, despite having opportunities through the years. At this point in my career, the timing is right. Knowing that DC Ranch is one of the finest master-planned communities not just in Arizona, but across North America, I thought the match might be a good one.

How does your last community compare to DC Ranch?

There are a similar number of homes in each community, roughly 2,600. But at my previous community, 90 percent of the homes were condominiums. I was also responsible for overseeing the golf course operation and its associated clubs, as well as the clubhouse restaurant and other food and beverage operations.

At DC Ranch, I believe my position will allow me to focus on making sure the business is fined-tuned and that the financial investments and infrastructure—the roads, facilities, and landscape—are properly and efficiently managed. Maintaining the community in a manner that contributes to a high quality of life for residents will always be a priority.

What experiences or skills learned from your previous communities are you eager to bring to DC Ranch?

I have had the opportunity to learn from a number of top-notch industry leaders who mentored me in the early years, and who I still seek advice from today. I’ve managed or have been involved with all types and sizes of communities and clubs. I’ve learned to become a keen manager in terms of process and application, and I’ve learned to lead people with collective efforts focused on positive outcomes. Above all, I’ve learned to listen. I read a quote recently that said “Leaders who don’t listen will soon find themselves surrounded by people who no longer talk.” That’s when the operation starts failing. I always encourage engagement and collaboration—from residents calling with comments and suggestions, to board members wanting to institute new programs.

Workplace longevity seems important to you. You spent 10 years at your last community and were in long-term positions prior to that.

7272 E. Indian School Road Suite 103 Scottsdale, AZ 85251

Staying with an organization over several years is important not just because of stability, but because it creates a foundation. It takes a couple of years to master an executive director or general manager position in a community on the scale of DC Ranch, as well as to understand the nuances of the organization.

Estate Planning Probate Trust Administration Business Planning QDROS Elder Law Bankruptcy Tax Controversies

What ideas or perspectives would you like to bring to DC Ranch?

Go slow to go fast—that work motto has served me well. My credibility in the community hinges on my ability to make solid and well-considered decisions. You have to make sure your advice is sound and you’ve considered all aspects. Once you do the work and can be confident in a decision, then it’s time to move forward.

What is your main goal your first year at DC Ranch?

To learn. The first year is going to be an educational process. I want to meet with various team members, residents, and stakeholders to develop a well-rounded understanding of what makes DC Ranch so special. I plan to spend a lot of time listening this year and observing. In order to make smart decisions and give professional advice, community knowledge will be imperative, so that will be my primary focus.

Shad M. Brown JD,LLM Former IRS Attorney

Maria is my best friend and I am looking forward to spending more time with her while getting acquainted with our new home and Arizona in general. We have a black Labrador retriever, Duncan, who is more spoiled than most people; I hope to take him for hikes in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. I’m really looking forward to meeting DC Ranchers as I acquaint myself with all that is new.

(Clockwise from top) The Humphrey family participated in the Climb for Cancer benefit hike; Erik was featured in a billboard marketing campaign for Barrow; the Humphrey children; Katie and Erik at their new rug store on Market Street in DC Ranch.

The hard way, the best way BY JEREMY STEVENS | COMMUNIT Y COUNCIL

When Erik Humphrey was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor in 2003, he was given two choices.

He could receive standard treatment with only a 20 percent chance of surviving for the next three years. Or, he could enroll in a clinical trial for a randomized experimental treatment that had at most a 50 percent success rate. Half of the patients were given the standard treatment and half were given the new treatment. After discussing the options with his wife, Katie, Humphrey saw this as a matter of stats and luck. “I found out that 99 percent of brain tumor patients enroll in trials, because the alternative is pretty dismal,” said Humphrey. “Knowing that,

10

R a n c h N e w s | A p r i l 2 0 17

the choice was clear. I wasn’t going to sit back and feel sorry for myself and let the tumor take over.” After the initial surgery to remove the tumor on the right side of his brain, Humphrey underwent 12 months of aggressive chemotherapy and six weeks of radiation. His experimental treatment was a success and hailed as a miracle.

“Everything went right with his treatment plan,” said Katie.

In fact, the regimen went so well that it is now the standard treatment for brain tumors at Barrow Neurological Institute, where he was treated by Dr. Kris Smith.

“I learned that being proactive and aggressive with treatment was the way to go,” said Humphrey. “And my recovery was just as vigorous. I forced myself to go back to work two weeks after the surgery.” Just three years later the Humphreys had a daughter, Anna, and then twin boys, Charlie and Bennett, in 2010.

Then, in 2014, Humphrey realized his dream and opened his own interior design firm and furniture store, Hyde Park Interiors. He began his career in the fine furnishing and design business 25 years ago. He has designed fine homes and retreats for clients all over the United States. Humphrey also has a passion for remodeling and restoring homes, and has undertaken several projects in Idaho and Arizona.

Bringing awareness to brain and spine research Erik and Katie Humphrey are proud supporters of Barrow Beyond, a philanthropic group of couples and individuals that raises funds to support brain and spine research through the Barrow Neurological Institute. The group sponsors educational and social events and tours throughout the year that feature top neurosurgeons and scientists discussing a broad range of topics. To learn more about becoming a member of Barrow Beyond, please contact Sharon Pollack at 602.406.1021.

“My doctor tells me that I am never going to be fully ‘cured,’ but each year when I have a brain MRI and it comes back clean, is another year I am truly grateful to be here.” Born and raised in Idaho, Humphrey moved to Arizona in 1990 to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance from Arizona State University. His ability to create beautiful environments while being sensitive to the financial parameters of each project is a unique specialty in the design industry. “Hyde Park Interiors is named in honor of the Hyde Park neighborhood of Boise. The homes are elegant and timeless, which gave me a lot of inspiration to pursue interior design,” said Humphrey. Last December, the Humphreys opened Hyde Park Fine Rugs on Market Street at DC Ranch. They eventually hope to grow the business into more markets throughout Arizona and the country.

Though the surgery left Humphrey with limited use of his left side, he still enjoys an active lifestyle including snow skiing and hiking with his family. “My doctor tells me that I am never going to be fully ‘cured’,” said Humphrey. “But each year when I have a brain MRI and it comes back clean, is another year I am truly grateful to be here.”

With a healthy family and successful business, Erik Humphrey is proof that hard work and determination can lead to a fulfilling life.

‘Shrek the Musical Jr.’ brings laughter, learning and lessons

S The votes are in: DC Ranch rises to the top! Since 1997, Arizona Foothills Magazine has celebrated the latest and greatest in Valley luxury, from the finest resorts and travel destinations, to shopping and beauty, to fabulous eateries and places to live.

Each year AZFoothills.com asks readers what their favorites are, and the best of each category is featured in the April 2017 issue, “a tell-all

guide to the coolest people and places in the Valley of the Sun.”

DC Ranch and The Country Club at DC Ranch are pleased to have been chosen in three categories. Many thanks to everyone who voted to recognize the special attributes of our community.

The Country Club at DC Ranch Best Private Club–

The Country Club at DC Ranch

ince February, a group of 35 young residents and neighbors have joined Arts and Education Coordinator Lindsay Vanegas and a team of four directors in preparing to present “Shrek the Musical Jr.” to DC Ranch.

This hilarious retelling of the Dreamworks movie invites audience members to laugh along as Shrek saves the feisty Princess Fiona from a terrifying dragon, at the request of the devious Lord Farquaad. Along with a wisecracking donkey and a band of fairy tale misfits, Shrek fights for what’s right in the face of adversity, learning about himself and others in the process. Individually, the young people in the cast will have put in nearly 100 hours of rehearsal by opening night, and have spent that time growing as actors and as individuals. The play’s

main focus is on learning to love oneself, overcoming hardship, and accepting the differences of others. These themes have been the building blocks during rehearsals, helping cast members to nurture skills beyond acting and singing. The cast and crew are very excited to share this adventure with you.

Arizona sports: front office charts strategic plays

S

ports is a big-time entertainment business, a multi-billiondollar industry finely tuned to capture the loyalty of fans. Most of that attention, not surprisingly, is focused on the players and coaches, the public faces of the team on the field, court, or ice. That’s the “sports” side of the business.

By contrast, the “business” side, also known as the “front office,” works behind the scenes and manages the team’s corporate functions. That includes decision-making positions like team president/ CEO, general manager, business manager, facilities, security, communications, marketing/advertising/promotions, ticket operations, community relations, and legal. Some decisions are relatively easy; others are agonizingly complicated, especially in the light of global competition, social media, and rising player and fan expectations.

How do Arizona sports teams handle all the challenges? What are the tough—and exciting—issues they face? We’ve assembled a team of front office all-stars for the final Spotlight Speakers Series talk of the season to discuss these issues. You don’t have to be a sports fan to be interested in learning more about the track records and successful careers of these remarkable executives. Their personal stories and business savvy opinions will make for a lively evening.

Lee has also worked with the Phoenix Suns, Mercury and Rattlers, among others.

chief operating officer for the Arizona Coyotes. He previously worked with the Anaheim Ducks and San Diego Gulls organizations as president of business operations.

Tom Kuyper will

moderate the panel; his experience includes ASU basketball, high school and college coaching, and ESPN radio color commentary for ASU.

Panelists will discuss the opportunities—and tests—that lie ahead for Arizona’s teams and share their perspectives on the experiences that shaped their careers. Capital and reserve projects keep the Ranch in shipshape

DC

Ranch is proud of its tradition as a thoughtfully crafted community with a deep appreciation of the connection between the created environment and the natural Sonoran landscape.

One way this tradition is upheld is by careful maintenance of the shared spaces on the Ranch—the community centers, parks, and paths. Each year, reserve and capital projects around the community are included in the budget. Projects that repair or replace existing items are paid for with reserve funds; projects that create something new are considered capital projects.

• A new recumbent bike and elliptical machine for the fitness room at Desert Camp • New patio furniture to relax poolside at Desert Camp

• An easy-access ADA-compliant pathway to the basketball court from the parking lot at Desert Camp • Resurfaced tennis and pickle ball courts at Desert Camp • Resurfaced basketball court at The Homestead

Projects for 2017, some of which have been completed, include:

DC Ranch Gives: Mother’s Day Diaper Drive April 1 – May 10 Goal: 1,000 diapers and wipes

• A newly installed rock climbing/ slide feature to replace the old sand and water feature at Market Street Park, along with repaired and repositioned shade sails. • Additional furniture at Market Street Park • Recycling program at both community centers

• Refurbished water feature at The Homestead

The ultimate goal is to maintain the comfort, convenience, and safety of Ranch residents, with an emphasis on high quality, durable and sustainable materials that will make residents proud of their community and eager to share it with family and neighbors.

An estimated 42,000 children ages 0-3 in Maricopa County live in poverty and need assistance. Federal programs like Food Stamps and WIC do not cover diapers. DC Ranch's goal is to collect 1,000 diapers by May 10 for the Diaper Bank of Central Arizona, which distributes diapers to many nonprofit organizations in the Valley. Come to the Diaper Drive Kickoff on April 1 from 8 to 10 a.m. at Desert Camp. Bring a diaper donation, have a bite to eat at the Trailblazer Breakfast, and decorate a sugar cookie to celebrate your participation in this valuable community effort. During the drive, please bring donations to either DC Ranch community center. “Diaper Grams” in increments of $20 are also welcome; your donation qualifies for the Arizona Working Poor Tax Credit. For more information, contact Community Engagement Coordinator Devin Haggerty at Devin.Haggerty@dcranchinc.com or 480.538.3544.

readmill. Elliptical. Free Weights. These tried and true workout machines have some competition: the unique Kinesis workout, a revolutionary system that sculpts your body from every angle. Shape Magazine listed Kinesis as one of “The Best Workouts You Aren’t Doing,” one that gives users a full body workout in as little as 30 minutes.

and GyroKinesis on Fridays. GyroKinesis is another workout included on Shape Magazine’s list of the best workouts because movements flow from one to the next and gently exercise the spine.

Kinesis is a four-station workout system that allows the body to move naturally through strength, cardio, and functional movements. Kinesis utilizes a 3D design for a limitless range of movements that can ultimately create a specific, progressive program and individualized workouts based on height, gender and activity level. And for those rehabilitating from an injury, the multidimensional movements of the Kinesis Wall ensure that strength and fitness are maintained during recovery.

Transform your workout with Kinesis at DC Ranch Village Health Club & Spa

Kinesis provides a different type of resistance training that is easier on the joints; it activates core muscles with each movement and allows for sportspecific exercises (e.g., for golf and tennis).

The DC Ranch Village Health Club & Spa offers small group training classes for Kinesis six days a week, including an express Kinesis class on Wednesdays

Workouts take place on a Kinesis Wall or Kinesis Station that can be used individually. The small group classes offered by the DC Ranch Village Health Club, led by certified trainers, enhance the overall workout. Each class is programmed as a circuit with no more than eight participants per class.

Following a warm up, class participants perform each circuit exercise for 30-90 seconds or a certain number of reps for a total of four exercises on the Kinesis Wall and four exercises off the wall. Resistance bands, medicine balls and free weights are utilized to provide a full body workout.

Kinesis is a great way to mix up exercise routines and keep workouts feeling fresh all year long. For more information about Kinesis, including a class schedule at DC Ranch Village Health Club & Spa, visit villageclubs. com or call 480.502.8844.
