Hidden gems abound in Scottsdale as you’ll see in this month’s feature on pages 10 and 11. A not so hidden gem is in DC Ranch’s backyard—the McDowell Mountains. Whether you view them from the road, out your bedroom window, or while you grip your handlebars and surge down one of the many trails, their beauty cannot be denied. We see the McDowells shine in the rising sun and be illuminated in a glow of pink as it sets. Snow has even dusted its peaks, delighting us with a rare a glimpse of winter in our neck of the desert.

DC Ranch has over 35 miles of paths and trails, 55 if you count the sidewalk connectors, that integrate with the City’s path and trail system. The trails reflect a partnership between two of your governing agencies: the Community Council that owns, manages, funds and programs the system, and the Ranch Association who performs landscaping and maintenance to keep the trails ready for you to enjoy. As a final portion of a recent major reinvestment in our beloved path and trail system, seven new route maps have been created. The maps highlight trails in DC Ranch’s four villages which are exclusive to DC Ranch residents. These truly “hidden gems” range from an easy route through a neighborhood to a strenuous loop that will take you to new heights. The new maps are available at Desert Camp Community Center or download at DCRanch.com to view on your phone.

In this month of Thanksgiving, I am grateful to serve a community that values its natural environment and embraces the path and trail system as a top-rated amenity. It keeps us connected—with each other and with our desert surroundings.

Living Connected DC Ranch seamlessly connects people to the beauty of both the created environment and the natural Sonoran Desert. Residents feel a sense of community, connecting with each other in friendship and common interest. It is a thoughtfully crafted community designed with unprecedented attention to detail. DC Ranch has a distinctive governance structure with ample resources that exist to ensure a legacy of an amenity-rich and active way of life. The highest standards and a convenient north Scottsdale location establish DC Ranch as a nationally desirable place to live with an exceptional quality of life and premium home values.

Ranch Updates The modification process

What’s ahead in 2021?

odification requests in DC Ranch are up 30 percent so far this year—perhaps due to the increased number of residents working from home. Modifications also typically become more prevalent as the holidays approach. All exterior modifications in the front or backyard including painting, landscaping or additions must be approved by the fivemember Modifications Committee per the Standards for Conduct DCR-16. These residents are nominated to serve and are appointed annually by the Ranch Association Board. The committee normally meets the second and fourth Tuesday of each month, so it’s important to plan early as submittal cutoff dates are one week prior to the actual meeting.

TOP FIVE QUESTIONS ASKED ABOUT MODIFICATIONS:

1

What contemporary paint colors are allowed?

Contact Modifications and Paint Specialist Alaina Martoccia at Alaina.Martoccia@dcranchinc.com or call 480.909.4811.

2

How do I go about submitting a modification and what is the fee?

Modification forms and fee schedules are available at DCRanch.com/Standards or call 480.513.1500.

3

Is artificial turf permitted?

Yes, with prior approval in backyards only. Many residents have championed for use of artificial grass in front yards, but the Covenant Commission recently upheld its decision not to permit it per the Standards for Landscape DCRL-20.

4

Where can I find a list of approved plants?

The abbreviated Approved Plant List and Prohibited Plant List are located at DCRanch.com/Standards. Guidelines are listed by Village.

5

Why do I have to plant a base shrub?

Shrubs are used to create a natural transition from one landscape zone to the next and is required by the Standards for Landscape DCRL-01 and the Design Guidelines.

Once you have successfully submitted a modification form, along with specific plans or details and applicable fees, your proposed change will be reviewed by the Modifications Department to ensure that it is compliant. It is then presented to the Modifications Committee. Following the presentation, submitters will be notified (within three working days) if it has been “Approved,” “Conditionally Approved” or “Denied.” Once approved and granted the DC Ranch Permit, the modification may proceed. Your team of specialists and staff are always happy to help to make your home improvement be as easy as possible. Start by scheduling a consultation.

esidents and visitors often take their photograph with the life-like mountain lions perched in Market Street plaza. Lovingly referred to as “The Cats on Market Street,” the family of mountain lions includes a standing male, a reclining female and a pair of young lions running together. Ever wonder why they are there and who the talented artist was that sculpted them?

History of the Cats on Market Street

and he is currently finishing several pieces for the Phoenix Zoo.

When DMB, the developer for DC Ranch, was designing Market Street they decided that including a public art project would add to its beauty. DMB, along with the family they partnered with, wanted the art to tie into DC Ranch’s history and future. Thus, they chose the often-seen mountain lion that roamed the land as their subject and a family of mountain lions to reflect the families that would be enjoying life at DC Ranch. Next came artist selection, and Mark Rossi was an ideal choice. Rossi is wellknown for animal sculptures, having completed major commissions at zoos across the country. The Houston Zoo has more than 20 of his life-size pieces

Rossi has lived in Tucson for 47 years and fondly remembers working on “the Cats.” Six people in his studio spent more than 8 months on the project. Each of the pieces was sculpted in clay to then make plaster molds. From the molds, wax models were made and sent to a foundry where the bronze was poured. Rossi was involved in all aspects, including the pour and assembling the pieces once completed. The large male mountain lion consists of 15 pieces that had to be welded together and smoothed to match the original design.

Rossi and his crew started with small maquettes, then made them larger and larger yet again. Each cat was made to be twotimes their life-size. The smaller sculptures were also purchased by DMB and given to various DC Ranch stakeholders as gifts. Today, the final sculptures are owned and insured by the DC Ranch Community Council.

Did you know?

Every holiday season, DC Ranch is decorated with 540 light strands, 400 lighted tree snowflakes, 152 metal bows on the gates, 41 metal deer and 6 dreidels.

OFF-ROADING IN THE SONORAN DESERT Nearly ½ of Scottsdale’s land mass is open space, which makes for endless off-roading opportunities and a number of local companies lead adventures through the desert’s rugged terrain. Take the driver’s seat on an ATV tour with Green Zebra Adventures or let the guide take the wheel on Stellar Adventures’ desert Hummer tour, both full of action and excitement.

IMMERSE YOURSELF IN ART Right in our backyard we have a public art program that rivals much larger cities, with nearly 100 permanent pieces throughout the city! Plan a self-guided walking tour or sit back and enjoy a golf cart tour with JoyRidesAZ through Old Town Scottsdale. The 13-acre property houses artist studios, a blacksmith shop, gallery and two old-fashioned letterpresses.

Scottsdale History • Scottsdale was originally settled in the late 1880’s and named “Orangedale;” the town’s name was changed to Scottsdale in 1894.

• The olive trees on Second Street were planted in 1896 by Scottsdale’s founder, Winfield Scott. The restaurant Los Olivos Mexican Patio is named after the historic trees.

Hidden gems and bucket list-worthy activities in Scottsdale

While global adventures may be on hold, it’s the perfect time to take advantage and appreciate SCO World Heritage Site, here are some bucket list-worthy things you can do in Scottsdale.

And for the showstopper, visit Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West, his winter home and laboratory. Visitors can take guided tours through the UNESCO World Heritage Site to see Wright’s living quarters, studio, theatre and gardens—even sketches and photos—up-close and personal.

EXPLORE OLD TOWN SCOTTSDALE

The heart of our city, Old Town Scottsdale, has endless shopping, dining and some spots you’ve likely

never heard of! Start your day with homemade bagels and coffee from New Wave Market, a husband and wife owned and operated restaurant. Don’t miss their famous Super Chunk desserts! Fueled and ready for the day, discover some of Old Town’s best shopping in the Fifth Ave Shopping District where you’ll browse through dozens of unique shops. Spend the afternoon at one (or more) of Scottsdale’s wine-tasting rooms such as Merkin Vineyards or Carlson Creek, or go back in time and grab a seat at Rusty Spur Saloon. End

the evening with a delectable meal at locally owned and esteemed restaurants including FnB Restaurant, The Mission, Citizen Public House, or The House Brasserie. It’s important—now more than ever —to take time for experiences that push us to new heights (literally!) and energize the spirit. And the best part is, you don’t have to go far to find a hidden gem in Scottsdale.

• The “Little Red Schoolhouse” in Old Town was built in 1909 at a cost of $4,500 and has had six different uses, including library and Chamber of Commerce. Today, it’s home of the Scottsdale Historical Museum.

• Scottsdale’s first Catholic church was built in 1933 by Mexican and Yaqui Indian families who settled in the area. Today, the Old Adobe Mission is still used as a spiritual center. • Scottsdale was officially incorporated as a town in 1951. At that time, the population was 2,000. As the 5th largest city in Arizona, there are now over 260,000 residents. • The Sugar Bowl is one of Scottsdale’s oldest attractions; it opened on Christmas Eve, 1958. Bill Keane, author of “Family Circus,” featured the restaurant in the comic strip several times.

Here are some that have recently invested in themselves so they can better invest in taking care of you:

THE SPA AT CIVANA WELLNESS RESORT & SPA

New to the market in the past few years, this wellness resort debuted almost exactly a year ago and is built on four pillars: Movement, Spa, Nourishment and Discovery. Its twostory, 22,000 square-foot spa centers around the theme of “healing through water” and features 23 treatment areas including one Watsu® therapy pool, two couples treatment rooms, three wet treatment rooms including a Vichy shower, five facial rooms, and 14 massage rooms. There is also a communal area of hydrotherapy immersions—the Aqua Vitality Circuit—that includes a European-designed Kneipp hot/cold wading pool, therapeutic soaking pool, a cold deluge shower, and more. If staying at the resort, there is a full menu of daily programming with everything from Spirit Animal workshops to aerial yoga classes.

Last year, the 28,000-square-foot Revive Spa expanded its fitness center to almost 3,500 square feet adding all new Life Fitness exercise machines, six new Peloton spin bikes and cardiovascular equipment complete with WiFi and TV screens. An 870-squarefoot movement studio was also added and expanded that includes a Precor Queenax wall unit with TRX capability. Just outside the fitness center, the spa’s new 600-square-foot yoga lawn, lined with artificial grass, overlooks the resort’s 21,000 square foot Chef’s Garden and is able to accommodate group yoga classes in season. Beyond that, there are 41 actual treatment rooms as well as a sanctuary pool, a bistro, hydrotherapy enclaves, cabanas, relaxation room, saunas, whirlpools and an ever-evolving menu of services.

THE PHOENICIAN SPA AT THE PHOENICIAN

The Phoenician recently completed the biggest renovation and refresh in the storied resort’s 30-year history. As part of the multi-year, multi-million-dollar project, The Phoenician Spa was completely rebuilt from the ground up into one of the most stunningly beautiful havens for men and women alike. The now-three-story spa features a glamorous rooftop pool with cabanas and full dining menu, 24 treatment rooms, a massive salon, two relaxation lounges and both men’s and women’s locker rooms with intricately designed steam rooms, saunas, oversized Jacuzzis, showers and more. Its treatments also continue to be cutting edge with everything from harmonic bowl healing to tarot card readings.

WELL & BEING SPA AT THE FAIRMONT SCOTTSDALE PRINCESS

At 44,000-square-feet, the ginormous Well & Being Spa at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess somehow manages to be both intimate and inviting. From its well-appointed locker rooms, eucalyptus inhalation room, aromatherapy blending bar, rooftop pool, cold plunge pools and indoor-outdoor whirlpools, Well & Being could easily be renamed Indulge & Luxuriate. Its menu of services has both traditional and out-of-the-box offerings, including a Havasupai Falls Rejuvenation body scrub inspired by the Southwest in every way. The experience starts with a sage smudging to cleanse one’s energy, then a scrub using essential oil that has been infused with desert salts. After a rain shower, there is a thermal mineral magnesium soak and massage with jojoba and salt stones, followed by a Sedona clay mask for the face a scalp massage and herbal wrap.

Data Harvesting Malware The deploy-

Ranch has seen an increase in cyber-crime due to COVID. Unfortunately, malicious users are taking advantage of the pandemic. Firewalls across the community have experienced thousands of attempted logins from many countries. Since DC Ranch recently upgraded components of cyber security, these protections have kept our resident information safe and out of the hands of hackers. The DC Ranch IT/MIS department encourages residents to utilize several forms of anti-virus software. Taking a layered approach to malware highly reduces the chance of contracting a virus. One way of preventing a virus from taking affect is to continuously update your computer’s operating system. The updates come out nearly every two weeks and resolve several security breaches that have been discovered. Another protection for you and your household are Single Sign On (SSO) or Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). These are forms of preventing a computer or password from being used

Cyber-crime in the COVID era for malicious intent. For example, most financial institutions will send a text message to the phone number on file and the website will require the code to proceed with the log in. If a computer or email is compromised, they only have access to one device and not multiple devices.

BEWARE OF THESE THREATS Online Scams and Phishing Threat

actors have revised their usual online scams and phishing schemes. By deploying COVID-19 themed phishing emails, often impersonating government and health authorities,

cybercriminals entice victims into providing their personal data and downloading malicious content.

Disruptive Malware (Ransomware and DDoS) Cybercriminals are

increasingly using disruptive malware against critical infrastructure and healthcare institutions, due to the potential for high impact and financial benefit. Law enforcement investigations show the majority of attackers estimated quite accurately the maximum amount of ransom they could demand from targeted organizations.

ment of data harvesting malware such as Remote Access Trojan, info stealers, spyware and banking Trojans by cybercriminals is on the rise. Using COVID-19 related information as a lure, threat actors infiltrate systems to compromise networks, steal data, divert money and build botnets.

Malicious Domains Taking advantage

of the increased demand for medical supplies and information, there has been a significant increase of cybercriminals registering domain names containing keywords such as “coronavirus” or “COVID.” These fraudulent websites underpin a wide variety of malicious activities including C2 servers, malware deployment and phishing. From February to March 2020, a 569 percent growth in malicious registrations, including malware and phishing and a 788 percent growth in high-risk registrations were detected and reported to INTERPOL by a private sector partner. If you have questions, email Bryant.Blough@dcranchinc.com.

To my wonderful clients -

BRIAN PASSEY | CITY OF SCOTTSDALE

anal Convergence will return Nov. 6–15 with noticeable changes, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, while still bringing the enchanting, light-based artworks from around the world that fans of the event have come to expect.

Scottsdale Public Art, which launched Canal Convergence in 2012, will expand the event this year from beyond the Arizona Canal at the Scottsdale Waterfront. In addition to some artworks at the waterfront, others will be located throughout Old Town Scottsdale to minimize crowding and allow for safer social distancing. Some of the artworks will even be found in locations where they are easily visible from automobiles or bicycles.

Modified Canal Convergence slated for November SOME OF THE PHYSICAL ART INSTALLATIONS AT CANAL CONVERGENCE 2020 INCLUDE:

The central theme of this year’s event is “Reconnect,” a timely focus considering how the world has been forced to find alternate forms of connecting since the pandemic began. With the event kicking off only days after the U.S. presidential election, and following months of heightened tensions due to the pandemic, Canal Convergence aims to find common ground and shared humanity through public art, addressing themes of inclusion, communication, collaboration and community engagement. “Each of the Canal Convergence artworks provide unique and meaningful ways to reconnect with friends, neighbors, and the city of Scottsdale through art,” said Jennifer Gill, public art manager for Canal Convergence. “Even though the look and feel of this year’s event has had to change due to pandemic restrictions, we are proud to say that the tradition of exceptional light-based public artworks remains the same.” Visit canalconvergence.com for more information.

Fences

• “Across the Divide,” by Casey Farina, is a generative video installation that uses projection mapping across multiple windows to produce visual habitats where abstracted human forms reside.

• “Fences,” by Philadelphia’s Immerge Interactive, is an interactive light installation, where patterns are generated by the motion of foot traffic along a custom LED display.

• “Hidden Garden,” by Koros Design, is a series of four inflatable light

sculptures, where artistic flowers wrap around real trees, extending the “green space” of the city and creating an unusual and playful atmosphere.

• “Information Flow,” by Justin Winters and Walter Productions, is an

interactive light sculpture that represents the hidden digital network of communication surrounding us.

• “Kukulkan's Portal,” by Liquid PXL of Los Angeles, is a light-based,

geometric sculpture featuring 10,000 individually programmable LEDs, honoring new discoveries in mathematics and science through its modular design.
