DC Ranch, the Scottsdale McDowell Sonoran Preserve, The McDowell Sonoran Conservancy and the Tour de Scottsdale are intimately linked together through a rich history.
Back in the early days on the Ranch, several folks involved in the development of our community organized a horseback ride up Windgate Pass to raise funds for the early efforts to form the Scottsdale McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Chuck Matthews, a founding member of the Covenant Commission, provided this photo of a memento from that time in DC Ranch history. Today, another type of ride—The Tour de Scottsdale cycling event—benefits the beautiful McDowell Mountains. The proceeds from the Tour are donated to the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy (The Conservancy), the agency committed to preserving and advancing the natural open space that is our neighbor— the preserve. Come to Market Street on Oct. 13 to witness the energy and excitement of this long-standing DC Ranch tradition; see page 6 for details. The partnership between DC Ranch and The Conservancy is natural (pun intended) and reflects our community value of Environmental Stewardship: We value the beauty of our Sonoran Desert surroundings and are committed to sound, long-term stewardship of the natural environment. We will continue to be sensitive to the natural landscape, maintain the ecological integrity of the area and respect the adjacent Preserve lands. Happy trails,
Living Connected DC Ranch seamlessly connects people to the beauty of both the created environment and the natural Sonoran Desert. Residents feel a sense of community, connecting with each other in friendship and common interest. It is a thoughtfully crafted community designed with unprecedented attention to detail. DC Ranch has a distinctive governance structure with ample resources that exist to ensure a legacy of an amenity-rich and active way of life. The highest standards and a convenient north Scottsdale location establish DC Ranch as a nationally desirable place to live with an exceptional quality of life and premium home values.

Scottsdale special election
SUSD Override on ballot
On Tuesday, Nov. 5, the City of Scottsdale will seek approval for the issuance of bonds for parks, recreation, and senior services; community spaces and infrastructure; and public safety and technology in the principal amount up to $319M. The estimated average annual tax rate for the proposed bond authorization is $ 0.2877 per $100 of net assessed valuation used for secondary property tax purposes. The Community Council board of directors has publicly supported the bonds, noting that there will be positive outcomes for the City as well as DC Ranch if Scottsdale voters pass all three bond questions. This will be Scottsdale’s first election conducted completely via mail. Every registered voter will be sent the Election Information Pamphlet and a ballot (with prepaid return postage) in early October. Visit scottsdaleaz.gov and search ‘Bond 2019 FAQ’ for more information.
In addition to the three city of Scottsdale Bond questions, the Nov. 5 ballot will feature a Scottsdale Unified School District (SUSD) Maintenance and Operations Override. An override is a tool that enables local communities to provide funds for their schools beyond what the state of Arizona provides. A vote to approve the M&O override would continue the current tax rate through June 30, 2025. The rate is $0.37 per $100 of net assessed valuation.

SUSD educates over 23,000 students annually. Their goal is to provide a high-quality education and a broad range of educational opportunities to ensure that every child is prepared for any career path they choose. One SUSD facility, Copper Ridge School, is in DC Ranch.
Extending the M&O override for five years will generate approximately $21.4 million that SUSD will use to maintain current class size standards, all-day kindergarten programming, and current music, art, world languages, athletics and co-curricular activities. If voters do not approve extending the current M&O override, SUSD will need to operate with approximately $6.5 million less per year for each of the override’s final three years. Did you know?

The McDowell Sonoran Preserve 25th Anniversary
Conservancy stewards volunteer their time in the Preserve to ensure the legacy of the Sonoran desert and keep Scottsdale beautiful.
BY LORI CALHOUN | MCDOWELL SONORAN CONSERVANC Y
ctober kicks off Preserve month and the 25th Anniversary celebration of Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve. The Preserve is managed with a unique partnership between the City of Scottsdale and the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy. The City and Conservancy work together yearround to manage and protect the Preserve, ensuring its beauty is enjoyed by the residents of Scottsdale and its visitors. Together we’re celebrating the rich history of the Preserve, its early advocates for land acquisition, abundant recreational activities, the science and education programs, as well as looking ahead to future planning.
THE CONSERVANCY, HOW IT ALL BEGAN
The conservation efforts for the Preserve as we know it today began in the late 1970’s. In 1991, citizen activists created the McDowell Sonoran Land Trust, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit, currently known as the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy. In 1993 those citizens began

producing the Mountain Lines newsletter and offering free hikes to the public. Today that newsletter has grown into a quarterly magazine and the Conservancy now offers more than one hundred guided hikes and bike rides a year. In addition, the Conservancy also conducts trail maintenance, offers dozens of educational lectures, workshops, field trips, youth activities, as well as an annual 3-day junior scientist festival for elementary students every spring.
None of these activities would be possible without the Conservancy’s steward program. The steward program originated with its first graduating class in 1998, just a year after the Conservancy hired its first staff member. The Conservancy has since developed into 12 staff, a 22-member board of directors and more than 650 steward volunteers. In addition to helping locals and visitors explore the Preserve, the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy conducts scientific research in order to better understand and protect our unique Sonoran Desert
and its many inhabitants. The Parsons Field Institute, originally launched in 2010, has currently prioritized understanding the effects of urban stressors and climate change on natural resources, and discerning best practices for ecological restoration and control of non-native species. The Field Institute has also identified 950 types of plants and animals in the Preserve, one of the richest ecological areas in the Valley.
THE PRESERVE AND WHAT IT MEANS TODAY In 1994 the City of Scottsdale dedicated 2,860 acres to the Preserve. Today it is more than 30,000 acres. In 1995 and 2004, City of Scottsdale residents approved tax acquisitions for improvements and bonding. These tax dollars have helped the city in its planning, construction, mapping, signage
these visitors. These knowledgeable stewards possess a wealth of information about the Preserve and are happy to answer questions about trails. In addition, the City of Scottsdale coordinates with public safety for both police and fire support and facilitates public compliance with rules and policies to ensure all of the Preserve's visitors a safe and joyful experience.
and ongoing maintenance of the Preserve.
In 2000 the City Council adopted the Preserve ordinance and established the Preserve Commission. The ordinance was created with help from user groups and other open space management agencies in an effort to regulate users of the Preserve and protect its resources. The rules and regulations of the Preserve prohibits motorized vehicles (except in designated parking areas), dumping, camping, glass containers, and the removal of natural materials, amongst other things. To view the full ordinance, see chapter 21 of the city charter. In 2017, more than 700,000 people visited the Preserve. These residents and visitors to Scottsdale enjoyed, hiking, biking, hunting, rock climbing and equestrian activities. The Conservancy's Patrol and Pathfinder staff greeted many of
Preserve land acquisitions (top) through 1994 and (bottom) through 2014.
This October the Preserve will celebrate another milestone with the dedication of its two newest trailheads, Fraesfield and Granite Mountain.

The architectural style is Spanish Colonial and Ranch Haciendas with f loor plans ranging from 2,700 to nearly 5,000 square feet with f lex design components. The distinctive exterior features include elegant wood entry and garage doors, stone facades, tiled roofs and broom-finished driveways and sidewalks. Neighbors
