Community mourns after historic church linked to Ira Hayes burns church services each Sunday,” according to the nomination form submitted to the National Register of Historic Places. The church was added to the National Registry of Historic Places in 1975.

Mackenzie Shuman Arizona Republic USA TODAY NETWORK

A two-story adobe and cement church that overfl owed with people for the funeral of World War II hero Ira Hayes more than six decades ago has been destroyed by a fi re in Sacaton, the seat of government for the Gila River Indian Community. The C.H. Cook Memorial Presbyterian Church building in Sacaton would’ve celebrated 101 years in April, but it burned down on March 25. Gila River police took three suspects into custody shortly after the fi re was reported just before 9 a.m. Tribal leaders called for forgiveness as the community gathered for a candlelight vigil a few days after the fi re. “We have to forgive. Forgiveness, as you know, is one of the hardest things to do, but it is also probably one of the most important teachings in our Christian faith as well,” Stephen Roe Lewis, governor of the Gila River Indian Community, said. “Forgiveness plants the seeds of love. And that love truly is the light that casts out the darkness.”

Old church was in growing disrepair

Fire claims Indian history A crowd gathered as the church burned, and there was an audible groan as the steeple crashed to the ground, said Brad Munroe, a pastor for Presbytery de Cristo, a group of Presbyterian churches. “Everyone understood it was just a building, but there were good memories and it was a symbol of the love and community support that had come through that church,” Munroe said. Generations of parishioners had attended the church. The funeral for Hayes, who was born in Sacaton, was held there in 1955 before he was buried in Arlington National Cemetery. Hayes is most remembered as one of the six men captured in an iconic photograph on Feb. 23, 194,5 that showed them raising the American fl ag after four days of battle on Iwo Jima. “I was told hundreds of people at-

tended the funeral, fl ooded outside of the church, hundreds,” Lewis said. “This church was a part of history.” The church was founded by Charles H. Cook, considered the “missionary to the Pima Indians,” according to the Cook Native American Ministries Foundation. He established the First Pima Presbyterian Church congregation in 1889, with the physical church built in 1918.

Cook went on to establish a school, which was then a stepping-stone for the Cook Native American Ministries Foundation. The foundation works to develop Native American leadership in churches throughout the United States, Canada and the Marshall Islands. “Until the 1950s, when the practice was challenged in the courts, the children from the Indian boarding school across the street were required to attend

A smaller church was built next to the old church in the 1980s, and though Presbyterian regulations technically require the old building to be destroyed if a new one is built, an exception was made because of the old church’s strong sentimental ties for the members of the Gila River Indian Community, according to the nomination form submitted to the NRHP. The church was known for its unique adobe and cement structure with a wooden interior. “The building, though closed for years now, used to be simply beautiful,” Munroe said. “It had such elegant wood fl oors and wooden pews.” Eff orts by the community to obtain a grant to repair and restore the church to its former glory were never achieved, leaving the building without proper care. “We always knew it was coming,” said Loretta Blackwater, pastor at the First Presbyterian Church, the congregation residing out of the new building. The historic church had fallen victim to vandals even before it fell to fi re. “I was just at a loss, because I grew up in the church, my grandma grew up in the church and my great- grandma grew up in the church,” Blackwater said.

What’s behind the fi re? Three suspects were taken into custody by the Gila River Police Department shortly after the fi re was reported at 8:52 a.m., according to the GRPD. However, police did not identify the suspects and refused to release reports of the fi re. Blackwater told The Republic she attended a court hearing for one of the See CHURCH, Page 4

suspects. “I told the young man that we forgive him, it is just a building,” Blackwater said. “And I simply read to him the smallest scripture in the Bible, John 11:35: ‘Jesus wept.’ ” Blackwater, who spoke in court on behalf of the congregation, said she told the man that though there may be retaliation from the rest of the community because of his actions, the church’s congregation forgives him. “We will be praying for you,” she said she told the man. The Gila River Police Department refused to release further information about the arson suspects and the cause of the fi re.

Community bonded by grief

WHO ARE ARIZONA’S 18 UNDER 18? Find out Sunday, April 14 on 18under18.org Learn what student in Arizona: • Successfully got her school district to pass a resolution to include mental health efforts as a safety consideration for schools • Developed a life wellness app to connect people to advice and resources • Started a local Veterans Heritage Project to capture the stories of the people who courageously serve(d) our country • Is working on a mathematical algorithm to control the spread of Zika virus • Created a food distribution network to help 300 low-income students eat over the weekend

Blackwater said the outpouring of love and support for the congregation has been staggering. “Nationwide, people have sent emails and are praying, it’s overwhelming to know,” she said and paused, her voice full of emotion. “The church is gone. But the community has lifted our spirits up.” First responders did what they could to save the historic church, and did what they could to support the public. According to the Gila River Fire Department, fi rst responders from the Chandler Fire Department, Casa Grande Fire Department and Battalion 231 from South County Fire and Medical District helped with the fi ght against the fl ames. “Oh, they were incredible,” Munroe

said of the fi rst responders. “Every step of the way, the Gila River fi re chief was alerting the folks watching the fi re of what they were doing. So when the structure collapsed upon itself, we knew it was coming and we were as emotionally prepared as humanly possible at that moment.” Hundreds of Gila River Indian Community members and others from across Arizona and the country gathered Friday evening for a prayer vigil in the parking lot adjacent to the church. The Rev. Steve Marsh, the great-great grandson of Cook, mourned alongside community members. “It’s truly an honor to be a part of this community, to hear the stories and to know the impact that my grandfather made, but also how this community impacted his life,” Marsh said. “Thank you for the privilege of being able to weep and to grieve alongside you and to just be here and to learn from you. I am grateful.” As darkness fell and the last speaker came forward, members of the community began lighting candles, surrounding the church with a dim light.

What now? Several members of the community have commented on social media posts, calling for the church to be rebuilt and restored. At the vigil, a representative from the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance announced a $5,000 donation to the First Presbyterian Church congregation. However, it is unknown what those funds will be used for. “Now, it’s just a memory,” Blackwater said of the church. “It’s just a story.”

Individuals experiencing homelessness have become a signifi cant socialservices concern in Tempe due to a dramatic increase over the past several years. There are more than 1,000 Tempe residents experiencing homelessness on any given day and more than onethird of households are at risk of homelessness due to increasing housing costs. What’s more, seniors are the fastest-growing population of homeless. Tempe Community Action Agency (TCAA) currently operates Tempe’s only emergency shelter, the Interfaith Homeless Emergency Lodging Program (I-HELP), which provides resources for more than 600 men and women each year, including case management, mobile laundry and shower services, shelter facilities and housing navigation. IHELP seeks to empower men and women to overcome their challenges, both short- and long-term, in order to successfully secure employment, safe, permanent housing and independence. I-HELP operates in Tempe seven nights a week, 365 days a year. Our program is a unique and cost-eff ective model fueled by the longstanding and generous support of local faith organizations that provide overnight sleeping space for individuals enrolled in I-HELP. Additionally, hundreds of community volunteers come together to provide evening meals for I-HELP participants each night. Our program model works because the community works. I-HELP shelters, feeds and cares for up to 40 men and women each night. These are men and women who want to become productive citizens and live independently. Many of the shelter participants are employed but struggle to afford today’s housing costs. During the day, program participants work with our staff on a plan to overcome homelessness and become more self-suffi cient. On Saturday, April 13, we are inviting

CLEAN AS NEW. The COIT Commitment to You.

Vehicles were engulfed in fl ames after a wrong-way driver collided head-on with a vehicle on State Route 347 near Maricopa on April 3, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety. Everyone involved in the crash was able to get out of their autos before they caught fi re. The collision happened in the southbound lanes of SR 347 near Miller Road, DPS Trooper Kameron Lee said in an email.

A red Dodge truck was traveling north in the southbound lanes around 8:15 p.m. A short time later, the truck collided head-on with an SUV carrying a family of four, Lee said. The four people in the SUV were identifi ed as a 32-year-old female driver and her three children, ages 15, 12, and 9. They were all taken to a hospital with injuries, Lee said. The driver of the Dodge truck was identifi ed as a 26-year-old man, and was being investigated for possible impairment, Lee explained. The driver of the SUV has since been released from the hospital, Lee stated.

Less than 2% of the Southwest is suitable riparian habitat, and the lower Gila River is one of the few riparian habitats in the West Valley. The river is home to a large and diverse population of fi sh and wildlife, including several species of birds on the threatened- or endangered-species list. The West Valley is also where I’ve called home my entire life. Some of my fondest childhood memories are from the adventures spent along the banks of the Gila River. Today’s landscape of the riverbank is completely diff erent from that of my youth. Yes, an abundance of birds, fi sh and wildlife still call the Gila home, but their habitat now lacks many of the native, nutrient-rich plants required to sustain their way of life along the river. That’s because in the late 1800s, salt cedar trees, or tamarisks, where introduced to the riverbanks as a way to control erosion. These trees are non-native, aggressive and diffi cult to control and eradicate. They’ve congested more than 15,000 acres in and along the Gila River not only in Buckeye but in our neighboring communities of Goodyear and Avondale, and across the state too. Salt cedars actually “outcompete” the native cottonwood and willow trees for water and soil nutrients. They grow quickly and densely and threaten not only the environment but put many residents at risk for fi re and fl ooding. Salt cedars are highly fl ammable and burn hotter than most trees because of their density. Future fl oodplain projections indicate more than 4,500 acres will be added to the fl ood zone near the banks of the Gila River. This expansion will limit development opportunities and will require both landowners and homeowners to purchase more costly fl ood insurance. Salt cedars also consume more water than native trees. It’s estimated each

salt cedar tree consumes between 200 and 300 gallons of water a day. More than 200,000 households along the 18mile stretch of the Gila River could use that water instead. Removing salt cedars has been one of my top priorities for years. I, along with the mayors from Goodyear and Avondale, have partnered with numerous state and federal agencies to create a way to get assistance in the removal of these trees. Together, we met with many of our state and federal representatives on both sides of the aisle, educating them about this critical situation in the West Valley and throughout Arizona, and also working with them to introduce and support salt cedar legislation. Recently, West Valley legislators from both the House and Senate introduced legislation (HB 2580 and SB 1450) to establish the Nonnative Vegetative Species Eradication Fund to assist cities, towns, counties and Indian communities with grant money to assist in the permanent removal of non-native, invasive plants, like salt cedars. Removing these trees and other nonnative plants and trees would reduce the risks of fi re and fl ooding, conserve water and restore natural habitats in riparian areas for threatened and endangered species. It would also open the door to a variety of sustainable development along the Gila River. The best part of all is establishing this grant money is a statewide eff ort, not just a West Valley eff ort. Sens. Sylvia Allen and Frank Pratt also sponsored SB 1450, even though they are outside Buckeye’s region. This legislation is also a bipartisan eff ort. Republicans Joanne Osborne, Timothy M. Dunn and Sine Kerr from District 13 sponsored this legislation, as did Democrats Lisa Otondo and Geraldine Peten from District 4. Restoring the Gila River to its natural habitat will remain a top priority for me. Thanks to the help of our legislators, we are now one step closer to making this a reality sooner than later. Jackie A. Meck is mayor of Buckeye.

WEDNESDAY’S CHILD

Giovanni loves to build virtual worlds Clint Williams

Special to Arizona Republic USA TODAY NETWORK

Like a lot of other 16-year-old boys, Giovanni is actively looking for a parttime job at a fast-food restaurant, preferably at a well-known national taco place. But he isn’t motivated by money to join the workforce. What he wants, Giovanni says with a smile, is free food. And, like a lot of other teen boys, Giovanni — who goes by the nickname Gio — loves video games. But no shoot’em up, blow’em up games for this guy. Gio love to build new worlds playing Minecraft, the computer game in which you make things out of virtual blocks. Continued on Page 13

Gio also helps build digital worlds through Roblox, an online gaming platform. Gio participates regularly in the games and even has a job in a virtual sushi restaurant. No free food, though. “You pass the job interview by using great grammar,” Gio says. Not all Gio’s hobbies are virtual, however. About three years ago, he started work on a hand-built model city, crafting houses and offi ce buildings out of wood and cardboard, laying out streets and highways. That city has since expanded to an entire continent. Gio’s passion for his model city is fueled by his fascination with real cities He studies photographs and maps. He

memorizes street names. “Gio would thrive in a home with two parents who can provide routine and structure,” says Brianna, a child specifi c adoption recruiter with Aid to Adoption of Special Kids. Gio says he would love it if the household of his forever family included a cat. Watch the stories of children in foster care waiting on forever families each week on the Wednesday’s Child segment each week between 5-6 a.m. on Channel 12 (KPNX). The premise of medical-alert buttons is simple: You are never alone and safety/immediate response is a click away. There are three dominating reasons for getting a personal-alert system: ❚ You don’t want to be stuck alone unable to call for emergency assistance when you need it. ❚ This will provide some peace of mind for your family. ❚ Timely medical attention is critical to successful recovery. If you think this isn’t for you because you’re of the mind-set these are just for really old, sick people, consider these statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: one-third of Americans age 65+ fall each year; every 11 seconds, an older adult is treated in the emergency room for a fall; every 19 minutes, an older adult dies from a fall. The most obvious candidates for wearing the button (the above stated statistics aside), include individuals who: ❚ Want to remain independent in their home. ❚ Live alone. ❚ Drive alone, locally or cross-coun-

From trash to treasure at recycling center Thalia M. Espana Cronkite News

Sherrie Zeitlin’s passion for recycling art supplies began in art school. “It was anything that was left over that was being recycled into an art project,” the fi ber and ceramic artist said. “That’s where I was sparked to open up this place when I could.” Zeitlin worked as a guest artist in schools across metro Phoenix in the 1990s. That’s when she realized that there was a lack of materials and funding available for arts programs. As a recycling center, the Art Resource Center is a non-profi t that collects reusable discards from individuals and industries, and gives them to schools and other non-profi t entities for the purpose of making art. “Non-profi t-to-non-profi t narrowed the scope of giving,” Zeitlin said, refl ecting on her upbringing to give back to her community. “Working in the non-profi t world, working in schools as a special artist, I knew there was a great need.” Zeitlin began the process in the early 1990s, encouraging classmates and students to recycle materials such as wrapping paper and newspapers. She opened the fi rst Art Resource Center, or ARC, in a 400-square-foot space in Phoenix. Today, ARC is inside a 4,000-squarefoot warehouse at 910 S. Hohokam Drive, #105, in Tempe. It’s fi lled with traditional art supplies, such as paper, paint, fabric and more — plus other materials that can be recycled into art, including fi lm canisters, plastic tubing and doll parts. Mesa home-school teacher Candice Turalba says the center provides her and fellow teachers a variety of supplies they couldn’t aff ord otherwise. “If somebody in the community has extra that they’re willing to give to somebody else, then we can use that in our creations,” Turalba said. “It links us to the greater community. We are also able to able to pass on what we don’t use to the Art Resource Center, knowing that we’re going to help somebody else. It meets our needs, but it also helps us with engaging in the community.” This story is part of Elemental: Covering Sustainability, a new multimedia collaboration among Cronkite News, Ar-

“Metzilocan” is an installation-based solo exhibition by artist Claudia Peña Salinas, who lives and works in New York City. The exhibition expands the artist’s research on the Aztec deities of water, Tláloc and Chalchiuhtlicue, relating this ancestral symbolism and knowledge to modernist and contemporary structures. Through travel, documentation and collection, Salinas generates a poetic narrative that is both personal and political. The works presented in this exhibition address topics ranging from the proliferation of images, the myth and the construction of national identity, to gender issues and the current water crisis in Mexico City. “Metzilocan” will include work produced while in residence at the ASU Art Museum International Residency Program and ASU Teotihuacan Research Laboratory, with an extension of the exhibition showing at the ASU School of Human Evolution and Social Change Innovation Gallery. This exhibition is supported by Galeria Curro and Embajada,

All kids should learn money-management skills Your Turn Lisa Riley Guest columnist

Do you remember when you fi rst learned about wants vs. needs? For me, it was when I was back-to-school shopping with my mom. I found these pants I absolutely loved. I wanted two pairs in diff erent colors, but my mom said I needed only one pair. Much later, I realized she was shopping for new wardrobes for four kids on a really tight budget. This ah-ha moment is the goal of the Teach Children to Save campaign created by the American Bankers Association, which takes place every April during Financial Literacy Month. Throughout the year, and especially during April, our Wells Fargo team members in Arizo-

na visit schools and community groups to educate children and adults about budgeting and saving. I am proud that Arizona is one of just 17 states that off er high school students some form of fi nancial instruction within a semester course. Further, this spring, Senate Bill 1184 passed and will now require high school students to have fi nancial education and money management in their economics course in order to graduate. But there is still a need for the fi nancial community to step up and help lay the foundation of fi nancial literacy for children, and all ages. A recent study by Prosperity Now ranked Arizona 36th among all states for fi nancial vulnerability. The below-average rating addressed issues including household debt loads, low credit scores, reliance on high-cost lenders and low or volatile incomes.

With that, more than 50 percent of children live in low-income households across our state, meaning it’s very unlikely they are learning the basics of money at home. And, research shows that when people are taught the basics of money management as children, they are more likely to be fi scally fi t as adults. That’s why this spring, we are partnering with more than a dozen Valley schools and after-school organizations to spend time in the classroom starting the conversation about money and sharing the basics of fi nancial knowledge. Through interactive curriculum, our team members will be teaching responsible money management, including how to create a budget, save money, spend wisely and more. This year, our hope is to do even more within our local communities and beyond. And we encourage parents of children of all ages to take an active role in ensuring your own kids are empowered with fi nancial knowledge. The American Bankers Association off ers the following tips to help parents begin the conversation with their kids: ❚ Talk openly about money with your kids. Communicate your values and ex-

periences with money. Encourage them to ask you questions and be prepared to answer them — even the tough ones. ❚ Explain the diff erence between needs and wants, the value in saving and budgeting and the consequences of not doing so. ❚ Set up a chore chart and give your children an allowance for completing their tasks. Require them to save at least a small portion each week. The three jars method, one for spending, one for saving and one for charitable contributions is a good way to impart a sense of responsibility. ❚ Open up a savings account at your local bank for your children and take them with you to make deposits, so children can learn how to be hands-on in their money management. ❚ Be an example of a responsible money manager by paying bills on time, being a conscious spender and an active saver. Children tend to emulate their parents’ personal fi nance habits. Lisa Riley is the region bank president for Wells Fargo, covering the central Arizona region.

Elite’s ‘credentialism’ includes smear of ASU Your Turn Charles Lopresto Guest columnist

“Assistant coach Jack Stovall had him wrapped up for Arizona State,” wrote Dean Smith in his book “The Sun Devils, Eight Decades of Arizona State Football.” The biggest player that the staff of Frank Kush ever recruited was waiting with Stovall for a fl ight to Tempe from the San Francisco airport. But college recruiting is like a spy novel with “recruiters from assorted other universities determined to change” the mind of a star player. When the player decided to take a restroom break, a USC recruiter followed him in. After a series of back-and-forth discussions, O.J. Simpson was convinced to

commit with the Trojans. ASU has had a unique, intense relationship with Southern California for a long time, competing for talent and resources. And ASU has provided an interesting locale for Hollywood’s fi lms on many occasions. “The Nutty Professor” fi rst introduced by Jerry Lewis in 1963 and depicted an ASU professor; the real campus was used in the fi lming. In 1987, director Ron Casden made “Campus Man,” based on a true story of a would-be entrepreneur who publishes a beefcake calendar of ASU athletes, eventually running afoul of some NCAA regulations. The most famous ASU fi lm from Hollywood was, of course, “Jerry Maguire,” made back when the NFL Cardinals played in Sun Devil Stadium. Cuba Gooding Jr. played the greatest “fi ctional” Sun Devil athlete of all time. Rod

“Show Me the Money” Tidwell was a Cardinal recruit who famously bragged, “I went to Arizona State! I’m a Sun Devil, man!” But with the good comes the bad, and somehow, somewhat unfairly, Arizona State acquired a reputation for being not the most academic institution and asa a punching bag for many a pundit or comedian. Fast-forward to the current scandal of some 50 elitists illegally manipulating the college-entrance procedures to “fast pass” their children into schools they consider prestigious. One school included USC. But it was the statement attributed to Lori Loughlin’s designer husband, Mossimo Giannulli, who along with actress Felicity Huff man, allegedly participated in the scam, that raised my eyebrows: “I have some concerns and want to fully understand the game plan and make sure we have a roadmap for success as it relates to (our daughter) and” … here it comes … “getting her into a school other than ASU.” Ooops! One can debate what is wrong with this story on so many levels. The pro-

gressive community in Los Angeles is on the forefront of ridiculing the same “white privilege” they were utilizing in this scam. How many minority and disadvantaged students they claim to care about were cheated in the process of obtaining those coveted spaces for their daughters, who expressed a lack of desire to even go to the university unless they could party? What we have is yet another “ism”: credentialism, which actually starts in kindergarten advancing all the way to college in a quest for a top-level school. It’s an obsession and a misguided priority for privileged children and their families judging, and being judged, by these elite schools. It is no longer how they perform in school, but what school they attend that counts. We should not allow credentialism to force us to apologize for the school we attended. I will not apologize for ASU, and no one else should have to apologize for the school they chose. And a trip to the bathroom isn’t going to change any of that. Charles Lopresto lives in Phoenix.
