Stone rocks! Solid choices to finish your new home    

hat’s the best finish for stone floors, countertops and walls in your new home? That depends on location, use, cost and maintenance. Because it scores a high seven out of 10 on the industry-standard Mohs Scale of Hardness, few materials scratch it making it a popular choice for kitchen countertops, said Mike Imperial, a principal of Mesa-based Imperial Wholesale, a family-owned and operated

business that has been in Arizona for more than 40 years. Marble resists some scratching, cracking and breaking but it is porous and susceptible to staining, Imperial said. Additional options Engineered quartz is approximately 90 to 95 percent ground natural stone mixed with 5 to 10 percent resins, polymers and pigments. “This allows for a variety of design and color options that are essentially ‘man-made stone.’ This hard granite-like surface is a popular choice for kitchen and bath countertops,” Imperial said. Natural stone tile is also an option with higher-end installations including marble and travertine for flooring tiles, fireplace surrounds, and shower and accent walls. Tiles are available from small 2X4-inch subway styles to 30X60-inch and larger.

atural grass can be beautiful for a lawn, but you may be able to achieve the natural look by choosing lower-maintenance artificial turf, say at least two product experts in the Valley. Artificial turf “significantly reduces water consumption, emissions from yard-care equipment and the use of herbicides and pesticides,” said Matthew Boggs, a director with Synscapes of Arizona, a local distributor of the artificial turf brand SYNLawn. “Your yard looks pristine at all times,” he said, “and maintenance is reduced significantly.”

imilar to “you say toe-maytoe, I say toe-mah-toe,” some folks call this kitchen gadget a garbage “disposal” while some call it a “disposer” — either way, it’s an essential component of your new kitchen and an environmentally responsible way to reduce landfill waste. Garbage disposals/disposers use an impeller to push food against a shredder ring which grinds down food similar to the way a cheese grinder does. “Once ground, food waste is sent through a home’s wastewater plumbing to treatment facilities which are equipped to process the small particles much more efficiently than landfills,” said Michael Keleman, a business development associate with InSinkErator®, a business unit of Emerson. He added that a growing number of wastewater facilities are installing equipment that allows them to transform food waste into renewable energy. Alyssa Weigand is a disposals product manager for Moen, a well-known manufacturer of kitchen and bath products. She said that the newest line of disposals includes enhanced features such as an easy-open dishwasher inlet allowing for an easy connection and a quick-disconnect removable power cord for optional hardwiring.

Things to consider  Weigand said that homebuyers need to consider how much space is under their sink.   Keleman said to make sure there’s an electrical outlet under the sink; if not, ask your builder to install one.  “Look for a disposal with a motor designed to dispose of food quickly,” Weigand said.  Is sound and vibration from operation a concern? If so, Keleman suggested a unit designed to reduce noise and grind food waste into very fine particles which also reduces the potential for plumbing issues.  Consumers with larger households or those who use a disposal frequently should consider increasing the disposal’s horsepower level, Weigand said.  Ask your builder about any disposer upgrades that might be available. For example, some disposers feature motion-sensing technology to illuminate, via LED lights, storage space under the sink when the cupboard door is opened.
