ver wondered about how much simpler it would be to control the flow of water from the showerhead if you didn’t have to reach up with soapy hands and physically adjust it? Well, wonder no more. Plumbing fixture manufacturer Moen has expanded the functionality of its “U by Moen Smart Shower” through connectivity to Amazon Alexa and compatibility with Apple HomeKit and Google Assistant. U by Moen is a nextgeneration Wi-Fi/cloud-based digital shower that gives homeowners multiple ways to create their ideal showering experience thanks to three choices to control the shower: voice activation, a smartphone app and an in-shower
controller, explained Michael Poloha, group manager for the Internet of Things (IoT) for Moen. “Users can remotely start, stop and pause the shower,” Poloha said. “Once they have created personalized presets within the U by Moen app, homeowners simply start the preset or specify a specific water temperature for the shower.” High tech is the new luxury High-tech toilets, tubs and showers offer an amazingly pampered experience. Some examples include: TOTO offers the Washlet toilet: a bidet and toilet in one. “A spray of warm water cleans you after every use,” said Bill Strang, president of operations and e-commerce for TOTO in Atlanta. “You can adjust the spray’s pressure and direction and rely on it to dry you, too. Imagine what that might mean to those with limited mobility.” The Washlet mists the bowl with electrolyzed water which means it sanitizes and deodorizes the bowl after every flush.“It’s the next evolution in toilet technology,” Strang said.
When it comes to tub technology, TOTO offers a Flotation Tub that “makes you feel as if you’re floating in zero gravity,” Strang said. “Your back is stabilized against the back of the tub and your hips, knees and ankles are flexed which reduces their mechanical/ energy load to nearly zero. When that’s combined with air-jets and massagejets, you experience a more comfortable meditative experience.”
Monitoring water consumption For homeowners who want to make water consumption a priority, Flo by Moen — a smart-home water-monitoring and leakdetection system — enables consumers to control their home’s water from their smartphones. Flo by Moen includes a Wi-Fi connected device that is installed on the main water supply line going into the home (which can be installed during a build or after) and connected to a smartphone app. “The system calculates water pressure, flow rate and temperature within your home’s water supply system while using artificial intelligence to differentiate normal water use from abnormal use,” Poloha said. “This enables the device to monitor and help detect water leaks and other vulnerabilities. If a leak is detected, the homeowner will be alerted and can shut the water off remotely from their phone.”

et’s face it: for most folks, a dishwasher is an essential component of your new-home’s kitchen. Units from many manufacturers are available including KitchenAid, Whirlpool, Miele, Maytag, GE, Bosch, Kenmore and more. “Consumers are first and foremost seeking dishwashers that deliver on their purpose –– cleaning and drying dishes –– while offering flexible loading features,” said Anja Prescher, director of brand marketing at California-based Bosch.

models, for example, sense the amount of soil on dishes and adjust to the appropriate amount of water and energy. “Our SmartWash doesn’t extend the cycle any longer than it has to be,” Beck said, noting that dishwashers can use just a couple of gallons of water each cycle but handwashing consumes 12 to 15 gallons.

How to choose the best interior design for smaller spaces
f you’re considering purchasing a smaller new home than what you currently own, it’s important to understand how to create a warm and inviting interior space on a smaller scale than what you may be used to. This isn’t difficult but it does require thoughtful choices, say two local interior designers. “In a smaller space, proportion and form are fundamental,” said interior designer Layna Justice, who is with the Tempe design firm Creative License International. “Sizing is key. Select pieces that will fit proportionately together.” In a smaller space, she said, it also helps to pick furniture that has a “thinner profile to keep visibility throughout the space. For example, a large sectional might not be the best option in a smaller living room. It’s better to use a loveseat or a smaller-scale sofa and two small-profile accent chairs.”

Add pizzazz with paint Paint can make a big statement and is inexpensive, Justice said. “People usually shy away from using bold or darker colors for wall paint but it could actually be better in a small space,” she pointed out. By limiting bold colors to an entryway, for example, you still get the statement you’re looking for without being too intense, she said. “Painting a single wall or a piece of furniture like a large-scale bookcase provides good contrast with the other

For those with a bigger budget, Justice said, using a fabric or vinyl wallcovering on a statement wall or a ceiling “is a great way to bring in some color, texture and pattern. It tends to be a more expensive wall treatment but it can change the look of an entire room.” Focus on the details Living in a small space forces you to only keep the necessities and belongings that make you happy, Justice said. “With a smaller space you can focus more on the details. With fewer rooms and less squarefootage, you can design each space fully.”
