hite wall paint no longer has to be the default pick, said Deborah Hattoy, founder and principal of Creative Color Consultants in Scottsdale. “There is enough information online and elsewhere to give homebuyers confidence to choose an actual color,” she said, adding that the psychological reaction to white walls is “bored disinterest.”

Neutrals and accents

Builders typically offer between four and nine neutral paint color choices in addition to white, according to Jennifer Day, who is a merchandiser and designer with PulteGroup. Shade selections tend to range from a light taupe to gray to tan to warm gold. When buyers choose a neutral color at the design center instead of white, Britany Simon, a design consultant with Taylor Morrison Homes,

said that they appreciate “not walking into a big white box when they move in. Buyers who choose color are often more excited about their choice than those who choose white.”

Light reflectance value

To narrow down your selection for a wholehouse paint color at the design center, Hattoy advised that you start with the “light reflectance value” (LRV) of your flooring and furniture. LRV ranges from one (black) to 100 (bright white). Darker colors, with a lower LRV, absorb rather than reflect light. Ideally, flooring should have a relatively low LRV (say, around 20), Hattoy said. Furniture should be a lighter shade than your flooring, while wall color should be lighter than the furniture (about a 60 LRV), with all shades complementing each other. If you select lighter

Experts agree that generally, semi-gloss — with a shiny surface that reflects light and is easy to clean — is ideal for kitchens, bathrooms and young children’s rooms. Everywhere else, said Deborah Hattoy, principal of Scottsdale-based Creative Color Consultants, consider an eggshell finish. “Eggshell gives a beautiful, velvet finish to the walls,” she said. A satin finish, which reflects more light than eggshell but less than semi-gloss, is another option for areas other than the kitchen and bathrooms.
