hen the temperatures have hit triple digits for weeks on end and the backyard pools are getting too warm to be refreshing, it may be time to head north to cooler temperatures and plenty of family-friendly activities. Northern Arizona boasts a number of great places to see and visit this summer and get a break from the relentless heat of the Valley—as a bonus, you can get there in a matter of hours.

For example, the areas in and around Flagstaff have plenty of things to do during the summer months, as well as some nice side trips along the way to break up the drive a bit. On your way up north, make a stop at Page Springs Cellars Vineyard and Winery in Cornville, a family owned vineyard and winery. The tasting room, which is located about 15 minutes south of Sedona, will allow wine aficionados to sample a number of Rhône style wines. The winery also features

a welcoming deck that is by the cool waters of Oak Creek; as you relax outside, watch for herons, bald eagles, raccoons and other local residents. Sedona is also a beautiful side trip on the way to Flagstaff; the town’s awe-inspiring red rocks are worth the drive alone. Print out a map of the rock formations along with their clever names and challenge the kids to find Snoopy Rock, Bell Rock and more. Once you arrive in Flagstaff, head over to Arizona Snowbowl; the area’s summertime

highs in the low 70’s make this the ideal place to cool off and admire the beautiful scenery. For people who won’t mind heights, the Arizona Snowbowl’s Scenic Chairlift ride provides a soaring bird’s eye view of the area. Other summertime ideas that are in or near Flagstaff include outdoor recreation activities in the Coconino National Forest and visiting the 2.4 mile, 550-feet deep Meteor Crater near Winslow, which is about an hour away from Flag.
