ponsored for the fifth consecutive year by the Arizona Commerce Authority, Republic Media, The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com have partnered with Best Companies Group and BestCompaniesAZ to produce the seventh annual Top Companies to Work for in Arizona publication. “As the Valley’s top media company, we are committed to connecting this community with the kind of opportunities that make it a great place to live and work,” said Greg Rhodes, Enterprise Sales Manager, LocaliQ Recruitment, part of The USA Today Network. “We believe in recognizing companies that make a difference, invest in their employees and create positive workplace environments.” Rhodes noted that more companies are focusing on their employment brand than ever before. “It is extremely important that prospective candidates know a company’s value proposition and culture, but it is equally important to retaining current employees,” he said. “Because companies are putting more focus on their employment brand, the program gets more competitive. This year we will recognize many repeat qualified companies, but also first-time winners with excellent employee engagement.”
GOALS AND PROJECT OVERVIEW One of the goals of the project is to recognize organizations that foster positive, diverse and inclusive workplace cultures that allow employees to thrive and be successful. The project also provides benchmarks for employers by identifying companies that have achieved top rankings in employer practices, employee engagement and satisfaction scores. “When businesses consider where to locate or expand, one of the first things they
“Arizona’s global reputation as the best place for business is demonstrated by the number of businesses that expand or relocate operations here. attraction and retention as well as bring economic growth to Arizona.” Peter B. Burke, president and co-founder of Best Companies Group (BCG), agrees, adding that an important goal of Top Companies is to raise the bar among our region’s employers, creating excellence and employee engagement in the workplace that will continue to attract talented people.
ELIGIBILITY AND EVALUATION The Top Companies program is open to publicly and privately held organizations, both for-profit and not-for-profit. “Companies must have at least 25 employees working in Arizona,” Burke said, “but it is not a requirement to be headquartered in Arizona.” BCG managed the registration process, conducted the survey, evaluated the data and ultimately chose the companies that made the list.
IMPRESSIVE SCORES This year’s scores are very similar to last year’s scores, with overall average satisfaction scores coming in at 90 percent, with 91 percent of employees at the winning companies answering positively to engagement statements. And from an employee perspective, just what does “engagement” mean? Burke said that the top three items that have the biggest influence on the overall engagement of employees include:
How the data was ascertained, compiled and analyzed PART 1: An Employer Questionnaire was used to collect information about each company’s benefits, policies, practices and other general information (one-quarter of each company’s score). PART 2: A confidential 76-question Employee Engagement and Satisfaction Survey was used to evaluate employees’ workplace experience and company culture (three-quarters of each company’s score). • Feeling valued by the organization • Most days, making progress at work • Having confidence in the leadership of the organization
TREMENDOUS JOB GROWTH Sandra Watson, President and CEO of the Arizona Commerce Authority (ACA) said that Arizona is experiencing incredible growth and economic momentum. “With a business-friendly environment and a reputation as a global hub of innovation, the state is known as the best place to test, launch and scale new ideas and new business models,” she said. “Under the leadership of Gov. Doug Ducey and the Arizona State Legislature, the state has taken steps to encourage new technologies and reduce burdensome regulations, creating even more opportunities for businesses and individuals. These initiatives, combined with the state’s commitment to innovation and a strong economy, make for a very bright future for Arizonans.” Watson said that the ACA continues to attract businesses to the state, work with existing companies to grow
ANALYSIS: The combined data allowed the experts at Best Companies Group (BCG) to conduct an in-depth analysis of the strengths and challenges that exist in each company. BCG’s experts then determined who made the final list. MORE INFO: Best Companies Group TopCompaniesArizona.com 877-455-2159
their business and partner with entrepreneurs and companies to create new jobs in targeted industries. “Since the ACA was formed in 2011, our team has worked on more than 730 projects with companies that have committed to creating more than 133,000 jobs and investing nearly $21.4 billion in capital into our communities,” she added.
THE BOTTOM LINE Burke said that the organizations presented on the following pages are innovators and the ones other companies use as benchmarks. “As you read their profiles, you’ll see the myriad ways in which these employers help their employees, their businesses and their communities,” he concluded.

NEW SERVICES AND PRODUCTS Equity Methods is introducing better ways to help client organizations assess pay equity and analyze diversity and inclusion programs. “We develop statistical models to help these organizations assess whether they deliver ‘equal pay for equal work,’ that is, whether women and minorities are compensated fairly,” Makridis said. “This has been especially meaningful in helping organizations improve their pay practices.”

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY WINNER
Farmers Insurance, established more than 90 years ago, is among the largest insurers of autos and homes in the country. The company has 21,000 employees nationwide (1,300 in Arizona) and is a recognized leader in helping families and communities recover from devastating natural disasters through one of the most technologically advanced and experienced claims teams in the nation. It’s also known for its generosity and commitment to the community. One of the company’s founders, John C. Tyler, famously said, “the measure of our worth is not what we have done for ourselves, but what we have done for others.”
A COMMITMENT TO HELPING “We understand engaged and committed people are the foundation of our success,”
said Sean Reeves, site lead in the Phoenix Claims Contact Center for Farmers. The company, he said, “has a proud history of helping consumers plan wisely for the unexpected. Our commitment to restoring order when tragedy occurs has not wavered over the decades.” Giving back has always been part of the Farmers culture, Reeves said. Nationally, Farmers hosts an annual school supply drive to support local communities and each office has the opportunity to select where to direct their donations. Phoenix employees support two local schools through this initiative, Lakeview Elementary and Aire Libre Elementary. Employees also volunteer their time to help students and teachers with various projects on school campuses. Farmers employees support local chapters of national organizations such as the Special Olympics, Habitat for Humanity and Toys for Tots. Employees regularly volunteer with a variety of organizations, and locally, have developed a strong relationship with St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance, the world’s first food bank.

MAJOR AREAS OF FOCUS As Farmers strives to maintain a high standard of corporate citizenship, the company dedicates the majority of its attention and resources to three areas: • Disaster resilience: focusing on preparedness, response and recovery, helping to rebuild communities and restore lives when disaster strikes; • Education: investing in youth, improving access to education and job readiness; and • Civic engagement: leveraging resources to support communities to help meet basic needs such as hunger and homelessness. “When we look at the ways in which our employees choose to get involved, and how much enthusiasm and passion they have while volunteering, it’s clear that being a good corporate citizen isn’t something that’s pushed on them,” Reeves said. “It’s part of the culture of this organization; it’s what it means to be part of the Farmers family. Giving back to local communities isn’t just a practice, it’s who we are.”
MSS BUSINESS TRANSFORMATION AZ EMPLOYEES: 28
Mike Hawksworth, President/CEO
For more than 30 years, MSS Business Transformation has helped nurture Arizona from a pioneer state to a state pioneering innovation, technology and sustainability. A pillar in the business community since 1986, MSS guides organizations through foundational business and digital transformations with expertise otherwise out of those organizations’ reach. Through the years, MSS employees have created a unique work culture, anchored by eight core values. Those values took shape in the 1990s. “That vision came together not by me sitting down and writing up what I thought it should be. It was really the consultants who worked for me that did it,” CEO Mike Hawksworth recalled, “and they have been the foundation that has driven our business ever since.” Those eight core values still drive MSS today. They include:

MSS sees the connection between a committed, fulfilled team and satisfied clients. The company is employeeowned, incentivizing accountability while maintaining core values and high performance. Transparency is key. Every month, an “All Hands” meeting briefs employees on all aspects of the company. Twice monthly “huddle” calls help employees understand the company’s financial indicators. MSS sponsors Friday informal lunches for employees to engage and learn more about one another; and its “Thankful Thursdays” allow team members to acknowledge
colleagues and show appreciation on a “Wall of Thanks.” MSS engages in community service projects, including work with Ronald McDonald House, St. Mary’s Food Bank, United Way, Junior Achievement of AZ and other charities. MSS’s annual employee satisfaction surveys are a valuable check-in with its core values. “These surveys are a great way for us to see where employees are in relation to their commitment and engagement with the firm. It’s always been a leading indicator when we have some challenges. … It all goes back to those core values,” Hawksworth said.

Since the first recliner was introduced in 1928, La-Z-Boy hasn’t only revolutionized its comfort and appeal, the company has expanded its offerings to now include bedroom and dining room furniture, wall art, accessories, free design services and more. That progress couldn’t have happened without one critical element: La-Z-Boy’s valued employees. With a presence in Arizona since 1983, La-Z-Boy of Arizona has four of the top five performing stores in the furniture retailer’s 350-store North American network. La-Z-Boy of Arizona embraces LEAN principles to guide both the employee workplace culture, work-life balance initiatives and create awesome customer experiences in stores. Recognizing that those on the front lines are the best resources for improving their own work as well as customers’ lives, the company empowers its team of 240 employees with the autonomy to give input on how to make their jobs and the customer experience better at its 10 stores throughout the state. The dedicated teams implement new policies and practices based on the simple core value of improving lives. “The employees’ ideas are actually listened to. They get to have an opinion on how day-today operations are carried out.
Everyone understands that we are all working toward a common goal,” said one employee in a company survey. In 2018, La-Z-Boy of Arizona employees came up with 2,405 ideas to improve their work, promote work-life balance as well as make a positive impact on the customer’s life; 1,553 of those ideas were actually implemented, a greater than 65% rate. CREDIT UNION WEST AZ EMPLOYEES: Nearly 200
Karen Roch President/CEO
cuwest.org
P.O. Box 7600 Glendale, AZ
800.621.0287
With a growing list of major accomplishments, Credit Union West and its employees are off to a great start in 2019. As the financial provider grows, it remains steadfast in its support of local communities and even stronger in its commitment to build an organization where “happy employees create happy members.” In January, the credit union officially welcomed a new President and CEO, Karen Roch, to the helm. In April, they debuted their new corporate headquarters in Glendale, AZ, and in May, were recognized as a Top Company to Work for in Arizona for the seventh consecutive year. With nearly 200 employees, the staff again cited the collaborative work environment, the organization’s internal career development and its practice of promoting from within as the reasons why they voted Credit Union West one of the best employers in Arizona. “It’s a tremendous honor to be named a Top Company for seven years running,” Roch said, adding, “We work hard to encourage a positive work environment, where employees feel empowered and have trust in management. When our employees are happy, they’re able to offer the membercentric service that we’re known for.” Roch started her career with the credit union in 1999 and is an example of the organization’s commitment to investing in employees’ career progression and promoting its top talent. She was promoted to President in 2018 and worked alongside recently retired CEO, Bob MacGregor for a year. This practice ensured the transfer of historical knowledge and allowed Roch to infuse fresh ideas and additional
innovation into the organization, giving the company the best opportunity to maintain the highest level of service. Employee satisfaction and management’s encouragement to solidify relationships with members enabled the credit union to earn a 97.4% member-satisfaction rating last year. Focused on member satisfaction, the company continues to actively listen and implement new ways to serve and elevate members’ happiness. Credit Union West’s tradition of service began on Luke Air Force base in 1951 and the company continues to support military family charities today. In 2018, designated parking spaces were added at each branch for veterans and active-duty military members to show appreciation, recognize service members, and personally thank them for their service. Because giving back is such a strong part of the employee culture, they go beyond to meet needs in the community. As part of the employee-funded Charity Fund Program, employees voted to contribute to four local charities in 2018: the Anthony Holly Foundation, Mayer Firefighter Charities, Arizona Humane Society and Soldier’s Best Friend.

The credit union also supports community businesses by buying local whenever possible. For example, when designing and building their new corporate headquarters, the credit union reached out to local design firms, office furniture suppliers and contractors. “We want our organization and employees to be community-minded,” said Roch. “This strengthens our connection to the places where we live and work, ensuring we all move forward by working together to maintain thriving communities.” Credit Union West is driven by values that are appealing to families who want a strong and stable community partner to help them thrive and reach their financial goals. For those who want to join a memberdriven financial institution with deep roots in their communities, membership to the credit union is open to all who live, work and worship in Maricopa or Yavapai counties.
