Of course, nothing is as glorious as Arizona in the fall. The heat breaks. Neighbors meet up on evening walks. Mountain trails and restaurant patios beckon. WINTER VISITOR’S GUIDE 2019-2020 | ARIZONA REPUBLIC
To reward that commitment to our journalism, we rolled out a new program this summer in which we publish a portion of our work exclusively for subscribers. Those “for subscribers” stories will showcase our best work – journalism that reflects a significant investment in time, expertise and craftmanship. They’ll signify work that you can’t get anywhere else. Still, most of the content published on azcentral. com will be accessible to everyone through a meter that limits readers on how many stories, videos or galleries they can consumer over 30 days. We also maintain the same access to work that we publish on the environment, child welfare and bioscience that is supported with grants from the Arizona Community Foundation, Nina Pulliam Charitable Trust and the Flinn Foundation. And we continue to provide free access to news that is a public service – coverage of emergency situations, breaking news, etc. If you are not a subscriber, I hope our work inspires you to join us. If you are a subscriber, thank you for supporting journalism that makes a difference. And welcome back to Arizona.

WHILE YOU WERE AWAY
Updates in AZ over the last year Debra Gelbart SPECIAL FOR THE REPUBLIC AZCENTRAL.COM
THERE’S A NEW MAYOR IN TOWN. The City of Phoenix is now led by a 37-year-old former City Council member. Kate Gallego was sworn in on March 21, 2019, succeeding Greg Stanton who resigned to run successfully for Congress. Though she is currently the youngest mayor among the 10 largest cities in the nation, Gallego isn’t the youngest ever to lead Phoenix (that would be Paul Johnson, first tapped to fill a vacancy in 1990 at age 31). Nor is she the first elected\woman mayor of Phoenix. Margaret Hance was first elected in 1976. In her inaugural address, Gallego noted that “in another city, these facts would be remarkable. But in Phoenix, it’s just how we do business.”
Fifth-largest wildfire in Arizona’s history ignites in early June Predictably, June was a different story, weather-wise. On June 8, about five miles northwest of the town of Superior, the Woodbury wildfire ignited and became one of the largest in state history. The fire grew in size to almost 124,000 acres, spreading through the Superstition Wilderness area of the Tonto National Forest and heading toward Roosevelt Lake. The blaze, believed to be human-caused, was not 100 percent contained until July 15. Thankfully, there were no injuries or loss of structures.
No more texting while driving in Arizona In April, Gov. Doug Ducey signed a bill making it illegal for drivers to talk, text, type or browse social media sites on their cell phone while behind the wheel, unless they’re using the device in handsfree mode. It took effect immediately, but there’s a warning period until Jan. 1, 2021. After that, drivers will be ticketed — up to $149 for a first offense and up to $250 for subsequent citations.
Cheesecake Factory acquires local restaurant giant In July, Cheesecake Factory and Phoenix-based Fox Restaurant Concepts (FRC) announced that CEO Sam Fox agreed to sell his company to the Cheesecake Factory for $353 million. Cheesecake Factory previously had made minority investments in Fox restaurant brands North Italia and Flower Child. When the deal is finalized in the third quarter of 2019, Sam Fox will continue to lead FRC as a wholly owned subsidiary. Other Fox restaurant brands include Blanco Tacos + Tequila, Arrogant Butcher, Culinary Dropout, Doughbird, The Henry, The Greene House, Olive & Ivy and Zinburger.
Arizona Cardinals snag the number one draft pick Kyler Murray, 22, was drafted first overall by the Arizona Cardinals as the team’s newest quarterback during the 2019 NFL Draft in April. What is especially notable about Murray is that he is twice-blessed as an athlete—he plays both football and baseball. In fact, he was considered a top prospect for the 2015 Major League Baseball draft. He chose to focus on football only beginning in 2019. The Cardinals signed him to a four-year contract worth about $35 million that includes a signing bonus of more than $23 million. May was unusually cool The month of May brought cooler than usual temperatures to the Valley. In Phoenix, high temperatures were recorded below historical averages on 27 of the 31 days of the month this year. On three days, temperatures topped out in the high 70s, about 20 degrees cooler than typical for late May. 6

Keep an eye on the U.S. Senate race in Arizona You may know that astronaut Mark Kelly, husband of former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords (who survived an assassination attempt in 2011), is running as a Democrat for the U.S. Senate next year. But you may not yet have heard that in recent polling, he is beating Republican incumbent Sen. Martha McSally, who is running for re-election. An August OH Predictive Insights survey found that 46 percent of respondents prefer Kelly, while 41 percent said they intend to vote for McSally. Many political observers consider Arizona to be an emerging purple state politically.

ONLY IN AZ SOMETIMES IT’S NEITHER THE JOURNEY NOR THE DESTINATION – IT’S THE DESTINATIONS ALONG THE JOURNEY.
Perhaps not long after pavement began threading across America, stands were erected alongside offering any manner of distractions that had just one purpose: get motorists to stop long enough to spend some money. As cars got faster the diversions became more outlandish. The largest this, the most mysterious that. The roadside attraction was as much a part of the landscape as gas stations and billboards. In a land as vast as it can be featureless, Scott Craven SPECIAL FOR THE REPUBLIC AZCENTRAL.COM
8 of Arizona’s most unusual roadside attractions
Here is a sampling of Arizona’ best roadside attractions, past and present.
the Arizona roadside attraction was a welcome break. While some remain only in ruins and memories, others continue to lure motorists off the asphalt to explore everything from architectural marvels to kitschy wonders. Here is a sampling of Arizona’ best roadside attractions, past and present. 1. The Thing Imbued with the main quality that makes a roadside attraction a roadside attraction, The Thing is truly weird. It’s as weird as it gets. Dozens of billboards from Tucson to El Paso implore travelers to explore the mystery that is The Thing, if not buy a Native American souvenir or perhaps enjoy a blizzard at the adjacent Dairy Queen. The Thing now stars in its own museum where its origin story unfolds amid aliens and dinosaurs. Displays show how visitors from space domesticated the king lizards to exploit Earth’s resources. Then the asteroid, a ton of war, Elvis and then The Thing. The connections seem so obvious now. And if you think you’re going to find out what The Thing actually is, you have another thing coming. Details: 7 a.m.-7 p.m. daily. Bowlin Travel Center, 2631 Johnson Road, Benson. (Use Exit 322 from Interstate 10.) $5 per person or $10 per family. 575-635-1480, bowlinsthething.com.

2. Santa Claus? If you’ve driven from Phoenix to Las Vegas, you may have noticed the remains of a home with a high-peaked roof that seems out of place in the desert. It once was the home of the world’s most heat-resistant Santa, a jolly gent who wore furry red pants and jacket even when it was 110 degrees. Back in the 1930s, it was intended to attract real estate investors who would fall in love with the charming holiday town enough to buy the surrounding land.
That Christmas wish never came true. While people stopped for a bite at the restaurant or dropped letters at the U.S. Post Office (postmarked Santa Claus, Arizona), the magic was gone by 1995 and the southernmost North Pole closed. In 2015, the 4-acre property was listed for $749,500, the agent suggesting it was a perfect place for a restaurant, hotel or biker bar. But Santa Claus it has remained, one that not even the elves would recognize. Details: About 14 miles north of Kingman on U.S. 93. 3. Hackberry General Store If you’re looking for the only parking space along Route 66 reserved strictly for Corvettes, you’ve found it. The space was established by a previous owner, whose 1957 sports car caught the eye of passing motorists. Now the remote outpost is a destination for tourists who have come from all over the world to drive America’s famous highway. Built as a service station to address the thousands of cars that passed by more than a half-century ago, Hackberry now stocks all sorts of Route 66 souvenirs, as well as road-ready snacks and drinks. Feel free to wander the premises, and ask for a carrot to feed the resident mules. Details: 9 a.m.-6 p.m. daily. 11255 Route 66, Kingman. 928-769-2605.

4. Wigwam Motel If everyone who stopped to take photos of the conical rooms also spent the night, this might be the most profitable motel in Arizona. Still, business is good in summer as many of the 15 concrete teepees are occupied with travelers going from here to there along Route 66. The motel was built as a roadside attraction, designed to stand out among the many lodgings that beckoned along the Mother Road during its heyday. Younger generations now recognize the teepees as the inspiration for the Cozy Cone Motel from Disney’s “Cars.” Details: 811 W. Hopi Drive, Holbrook. 928-5243048, www.galerie-kokopelli.com/wigwam. 5. Giganticus Headicus Few expect to see a 14-foot-tall tiki head as they cruise along Route 66 near Kingman. Actually, no one expects such a sight, which is why so many people come to an abrupt halt for selfies. A few miles outside Kingman, Route 66 takes a sweeping curve to the south. Giganticus Headicus stares out at the northern point of the bend, impossible to miss. The head was crafted by local artist Gregg Arnold in 2004, and its impressive size earns every bit of its faux-Latin name. Details: Antares Visitor Center, 9855 Route 66, Kingman. www.gokingman.com/attraction-giganticus-headicus. 6. London Bridge Welcome to the roadside attraction on a grand scale. The stone-arch bridge was purchased, dismantled and reassembled at great expense and solely to attract people to Lake Havasu City. In 1963, industrialist Robert McCulloch purchased thousands of acres around Lake Havasu, a remote area on no one’s bucket list. McCulloch turned that around in 1968 when he bought the actual London Bridge, a span with a few centuries on it. Now each year thousands of tourists walk its length, turn around and return to the start. Details: 1340 McCulloch Blvd., Lake Havasu City. golakehavasu.com/activities/attractions/ london-bridge.
7. Two Guns Once the site of a trading post, hotel and makeshift zoo, little remains of Two Guns thanks to a couple of fires and loads of bad luck. Situated not far from a railroad camp that sprouted on the edge of Diablo Canyon, Two Guns attracted travelers along the National Trail Highway, later to become Route 66. As traffic increased, so did the investment in businesses. Two Guns is most often associated with Harry “Two Guns” Miller, an entrepreneur who added the zoo (only to be mauled by a mountain lion and bitten by a Gila monster). He led popular tours to the nearby Apache Death Cave, known for an incident in 1878 in which Navajos, seeking vengeance for recent raids, trapped and killed Apaches inside the cave. A robbery and subsequent fire doomed Miller, although Two Guns lasted until fire struck again in 1971. Details: Two Guns is about 35 miles east of Flagstaff. Take Exit 230 from Interstate 40. The ghost town is just to the south. 8. Hi Jolly’s Tomb, Quartzsite In an era when no one thought twice about butchering a foreign name, Hadji Ali arrived from the Middle East with a phalanx of camels meant to transform the way people crossed the Southwestern desert. It was 1856 and the camels were the idea of Jefferson Davis, the secretary of war. The bold experiment was cut short by the Civil War as Davis found employment to the south. Ali, known as Hi Jolly, would remain in Quartzsite until his death in 1902. Local residents erected a small pyramid as his tomb, and in 1935 the Arizona Highway Department added a bronze plaque to commemorate Ali, saying in part, “Cameldriver – packer – scout – over 30 years a faithful aid to the US government.” Details: The Hi Jolly Cemetery is north of Main Street on Hi Jolly Lane in Quartzsite.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO TRAVEL FAR TO FIND SOME OF THE ARIZONA’S MOST INTERESTING AND UNIQUE ATTRACTIONS. Head out and enjoy these easy day trips and overnight getaways
Gold King Mine and Ghost Town Jerome may be the only ghost town in America that has its own ghost suburb. Sitting a mile north of Jerome, Gold King Mine and Ghost Town harbors an assortment of ramshackle buildings, a menagerie of friendly animals and a sprawling array of rusted machinery that forever teeters between ruin and redemption. This is paradise for gearheads and photographers. Trucks, cars and nearly every other manner of conveyance lines the pathways, including incredible finds like a 1902 Studebaker electric carriage. The 1914 sawmill still fills lumber orders, both commercial grade and for artisans handcrafting furniture. Details: 1000 Perkinsville Road, Jerome. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. daily. 928-634-0053, goldkingmineghosttown.com. Meteor Crater Some 50,000 years ago as woolly mammoths and giant ground sloths grazed the grasslands of what would become northern Arizona, a slab of iron and nickel 150 feet across screamed through the skies. The meteor struck with an explosive force greater than 20 million tons of TNT. The impact gouged a giant bowl-shaped cavity 700 feet deep and more than 4,000 feet across, excavating several hundred million tons of rock and dirt. Kaboom! This site east of Flagstaff is the first proven and best-preserved impact meteor crater on the planet. There’s been some slight erosion and the bottom has partly filled in but essentially the big hole hasn’t changed much. Visitors
can enjoy comfortable facilities, including an interactive museum and a movie with lots of explosive graphics. Paved walking trails skirt the rim and lead to several prime viewing platforms. Details: 928-289-5898, meteorcrater.com Vulture City Ghost Town See the reason Wickenburg exists when you visit the ghost town of Vulture City. Twelve miles outside of town, this is the site of one of Arizona’s most productive gold mines, discovered by Henry Wickenburg. Walk the graveled half-mile path to see the collection of weathered historic buildings surrounded by old mining equipment such as the stamp mill and headframe. Guided tours are offered at 10 a.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Details: 36610 N. 355th Ave., Wickenburg. 9 a.m.-3 p.m. daily. 877-425-9229, vultureminetours.com. Tubac Enjoy a historic getaway and get a jump on your holiday shopping when you visit this picturesque community 40 miles south of Tucson. Tubac nestles in a mountain-framed valley on the banks of the Santa Cruz River. It was established in 1752 as a Spanish presidio, making it the first European settlement in what would become Arizona. Today, more than 80 art galleries and shops are clustered in the village plaza where old adobes, shady courtyards and ocotillo fences blend seamlessly with a handful of newer buildings. You’ll find paintings, sculptures, jewelry, ceramics, yard art, handcrafted furniture, greeting cards and more. Thanksgiving weekend bonus: The Tubac Fall Art Walk is from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Nov. 23, with demonstrations, receptions and special events all day.

THE MERCURY IS DROPPING WHICH MEANS THE ENTERTAINMENT IS HEATING UP IN PHOENIX.
Ticket desks and will-call booths are their busiest from November through March, when Mother Nature encourages everyone to get outside and find some culture. Two of the Valley’s biggest draws this winter might attract you for different reasons. If you feel like getting your heart rate up, head to ASU Gammage Nov. 15-17 to witness the percussive talents of the Blue Man Group. If something a little more dramatic is your game, check out La Boheme at the Arizona Opera Jan. 24-26. Both ASU Gammage and Arizona Opera have full seasons of performances running through Spring. For something authentically Phoenix, can’t-miss arts venues include the Heard Museum and Phoenix Art Museum. The Heard is world renowned for its collection of Native American art (and always gets my vote for having the best gift

shop in town). The annual World Championship Hoop Dance Contest at the Heard (set for Feb. 8 and 9 in 2020) is a showcase of the best of Native American dance, and is a must-see. The nearby Phoenix Art Museum has wonderful exhibits of paintings and sculpture – but the museum’s fashion collection is always a visual treat sure to please your Inner Audrey. If you’re looking for something a little more traditional, whether that’s holiday-themed or family-oriented, Downtown Phoenix has you covered. The Phoenix Symphony’s annual Holiday Pops concert (Nov. 2930 and Dec. 1) offers a delightful concert of holiday tunes led by singers who are exponentially more talented than anyone in your family. A few of the numbers invite the crowd to sing along. On New Year’s Eve, the symphony hosts two events, a celebration and gala, perfect for revelers who want to ring in 2020 with a little culture. Il Divo stops by the Comerica
Theatre for a “Holiday Song Celebration” on Dec. 17. Ballet Arizona’s annual production of the Nutcracker runs from Dec. 13-24. (Pro tip: Stop by the CitySkate Holiday Ice Rink before or after your show.) When all that holiday music starts to inspire you, take a drive to north Phoenix and visit the Musical Instrument Museum, where you can see instruments from the likes of Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash. But unlike most other museums, this is a place where you and look and touch: The MIM’s Experience Gallery lets guests of all ages make their own music. The museum is a popular destination for not just residents and tourists, but also visiting professional musicians. You never know what chart-topping artist might make their visit right along with you. And those are just the highlights. The Valley of the Sun always shines in the wintertime.

And you’re helping a state where you spend a lot of time to provide more services to many worthy recipients. To begin with, at approximately 25 casinos operated by 16 Native American tribes across the state, more than $4 billion in sales are generated every year. In fiscal 2019, the tribes made about $98 million in gaming-related payments to Arizona state government, and an estimated $13 million more went to directly from tribes to counties, cities and towns around the state, according to the Arizona Department of Gaming. These tax and direct payments to governmental entities support—among many other programs and causes—the Arizona Benefits Fund, which is directed toward education, trauma and emergency services, wildlife conservation, tourism and problem-gambler education, prevention and treatment. In the past 16 years, more than $1.3 billion has been directed to the Arizona Benefits Fund from tribal gaming. This includes more than $659 million for the education system in the state. Michelle Jacoby SPECIAL FOR THE REPUBLIC AZCENTRAL.COM
Find your happy ‘shopping’ place!
IF YOU’RE ANYTHING LIKE ME (and let’s face it, most shopping-obsessed Americans), the lure of a few mouse clicks and a visit from your friendly, neighborhood UPS man is almost too hard to resist. But there’s something almost romantic about the time-honored tradition of strolling leisurely through the mall, darting in and out of your favorite shops and boutiques, and coming home laden with pretty bags and packages filled with treasured finds. Thankfully, that tradition is alive and well throughout the Valley. From the East Valley to the West, from Scottsdale to central Phoenix, a bounty of retail centers and specialty stores is making the greater Phoenix area a favorite destination for even the most seasoned shopper. In the East Valley, Chandler Fashion Center, located off the Loop 101 Freeway and Chandler Boulevard, is one of the largest premier shopping destinations in the Southwest. It has an upscale collection of more than 180 retailers including Ann Taylor, Michael Kors, Coach, Godiva Chocolatier, and lululemon athletica, anchored by Dillard’s, Macy’s, and Nordstrom. In Mesa, the city’s largest retail center is Mesa Riverview, located off the Loop 202 North Freeway. It offers more than 50 brand-name retailers, including anchor store Bass Pro Shops, one of the largest outdoor retailers in the country. And in Gilbert, SanTan Village is your one-stop destination for a great mix of shops, boutiques, restaurants and entertainment venues perfect for the whole family. If your need for retail therapy takes you to the West Valley, Arrowhead Towne Center in Glendale has a wide collection of recognized stores and shops, from H&M to the Apple Store. It’s plain to see retail options are plentiful
throughout the Valley. But when it comes to luxury retailers and exclusive brands, Scottsdale Fashion Square is the place to be. The ever-evolving retail center has upscale shoppers’ tongues wagging, thanks to muchawaited openings of luxury brands Breitling, Hublot, IWC Schaffhausen, Saint Laurent, and Trina Turk. With its eye on becoming a true destination, Scottsdale Fashion Square is planning the highly-anticipated opening of Caesars Republic Scottsdale, a four-star hotel at the intersection of Goldwater and Highland avenues. At 11 stories with 266 guest rooms and five luxury entertainment suites, the hotel will feature a lobby bar, signature restaurant, and the only rooftop pool in Scottsdale—all within walking distance of some of the most upscale, high-end retailers in Arizona. “… Scottsdale Fashion Square is the natural home for the innovative Caesars Republic hotel concept,” says Ed Coppola, president of Macerich, the shopping center’s management company. “The addition of this exciting new hotel is part of the next phase of development for our exceptional mixed use property [and will] bring even more value to this one-of-akind destination.” Rounding out the high-end shopping experience in the Valley are Scottsdale Quarter, home to first-in-Arizona retailers CB2, Restoration Hardware, and West Elm (which also has a location at Uptown Plaza in Phoenix); and the Biltmore Fashion Park in Phoenix. Situated on the corner of 24th Street and Camelback Road, the open-air shopping center is home to Saks Fifth Avenue, M.A.C. Cosmetics, and Ralph Lauren.

I’m loving the variety we have – an eatery specializing in mac and cheese, for example, or another spot – Glendale’s Casa Terra - that offers tasty vegan artichoke tacos. Custom dishes are a hot trend right now, too, with lots of build-your-own options, so you can have that perfect gooey, gorgeous enchilada at the new Gadzooks in Tempe, or dessert just the way you want it at the cannoli-centric Sicilian Baker in Phoenix. Join me for a delicious meal at these other new standout spots: Ocean 44 Swanky seafood and steaks are the stars at this 12,000 square foot fine dining palace from brothers Mike and Jeff Mastro (Steak 44 and Dominick’s Steakhouse). The Scottsdale Fashion Square destination impresses with a glamorous open kitchen, two bars, and an extensive menu anchored around luxuries like whole Maine lobster and Shetland Island salmon. Valley sports teams bring optimism to national stage
Valley visitors, you made it just in time. Like the phoenix, the mythical bird of Greek mythology that has the power of renewal, the sports teams here appear to be nearing a return to the national stage. The Cardinals, Suns and Coyotes made major changes while pivoting toward the future, and the Diamondbacks — the only one of the state’s four major league franchises with a championship — also are making strides. On the college level, Arizona State offers ascending football and basketball programs under two of the hottest coaching commodities in the NCAA, Herm Edwards and Bobby Hurley, respectively. It is an optimistic heat. The positivity begins with the NFL Cardinals, who made the biggest offseason

splash when they hired coach Kliff Kingsbury to install his version of the fast-paced offenses that are trending in the league. (See Rams, Chiefs, et al.) Kingsbury’s so-called “Air Raid” attack features no huddles, the shotgun formation, multi-receiver sets and the promise of a big play almost every play. Kingsbury found the man to run it in quarterback Kyler Murray, taken with the first pick of the 2019 draft and the only athlete ever selected in the first round of the NFL and major league baseball drafts. Murray won the Heisman Trophy playing a similar style at Oklahoma last season, fueling expectations. “If I wrote ‘wow’ one hundred times, that was probably not enough,” Cardinals general manager Steve Keim said of his reaction to watching video of Murray. “I’ve seen guys who have thrown it like him. I’ve seen guys who can run it like him. But I can tell you I haven’t seen anybody that can do the combination that he brings to the table.” The Suns brought in a new leadership team to help
shape their future around star shooting guard Devin Booker. James James, a three-time NBA champion as a player, was officially named the general manager last spring after serving as the acting general manager the previous season. Veteran coach Monty Williams, hired in May as the Suns’ fifth coach in five years will look to Booker as the centerpiece of the team after averaging a career-high 26.6 points a game last season. Booker, who signed a fiveyear, $158 million contract extension that kicks in this season, became the youngest player in NBA history to record two consecutive 50-point games when he did it last March at age 22. Secondyear center Deandre Ayton could be expected to take another step forward after averaging a double-double as a rookie. The NHL Coyotes, this close to a playoff berth a year ago, made changes at the very top when billionaire hotel/casino executive Alex Meruelo purchased a majority interest in the team in July. “He has the expertise in turning businesses around and

the resources to make it happen, said NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, long a believer in the viability of the valley as an NHL market. “We are excited to have him in the league. Under the steady hand of coach Rick Tocchet, the Coyotes were in contention for a playoff spot into the last week of the season while making a 16-point improvement. The Diamondbacks recently traded away franchise stalwarts Paul Goldschmidt and Zack Greinke, but the return in both deals gives them building blocks going forward under general manager Mike Hazen and former NL manager of the year Torey Lovullo. Former Duke great Hurley has guided Arizona State to two consecutive 20-win seasons and NCAA tournament appearances, the school’s first back-to-back NCAA bids since 1980-81. Straight-talking Edwards led the football team to a 7-6 record and a bowl game in his first year on the job, and his personal approach has been a plus on the recruiting trail, seemingly ensuring future success.

ARIZONA REPUBLIC | 2019-2020 WINTER VISITOR’S GUIDE

LAST WORD
We’re growing up…or are we? Katrina Bland THE REPUBLIC AZCENTRAL.COM
You know how you didn’t wake up one morning, on your 18th birthday, or your 21st, and suddenly you were an adult? How it seemed to happen in steps over time? That first paycheck. Buying renter’s insurance. The first time something went wrong with your car — and you didn’t call your dad for help. They are the kinds of moments that nudge us a little more firmly into adulthood. Some are hard shoves. Getting fired. A car accident. Some are punches in the face. Going to war. Losing a loved one. At an Academy of Medical Sciences
meeting in Oxford, experts pinpointed an age as the entry point to being an adult. It’s 30. Until then, our brains still are developing. Adulthood, one expert said, is “a much more nuanced transition that takes place over three decades.” I didn’t feel like an adult until I was 33. It happened in a moment. Clearly I was an adult. I had two college degrees and a job. I owned a house. I was eight months pregnant. I felt like an adult a lot of the time, but it sometimes felt like I was trying on the costume. That changed in a night as I sat at my dad’s hospice bed in 1999. My
dad struggled to breathe. I struggled, too. Between wanting him to stay and letting him go. I went into the bathroom and while I was in there, I prayed. “If you are going to take him anyway,” I said aloud, “take him quickly.” It was there on my knees on the cold tile floor, hugely pregnant, praying to a god I wasn’t sure I believed in, that I realized I was ready to let go of the person I cared about most. It felt completely grown up. Maybe the best measure of whether you’re an adult is wishing you didn’t have to be one.
