I recently came home from spending three weeks in the hospital, spread over three stays. Here are some observations and suggestions based on this experience and ones in hospitals in Arizona, Minnesota and New Jersey. My recent stays were at Mayo Clinic’s Phoenix hospital for life-threatening conditions. I have no doubt I’d be dead now if I hadn’t gone there. I can’t say enough good things about Mayo. Arizonans are lucky to be home to one of the nation’s best places for healing people, It’s interesting to see what happens when a doctor enters a room. Nurses and technicians step back, just as residents do when the attending comes in. I think things have to work this way, but it could tend to make doctors too full of themselves. And it might make all of them forget who is by far the most im-
portant people in any hospital: patients. Arizona suff ers from a shortage of doctors. It would be nice to see that solved. I have ideas on how to do that, but space limits won’t let me do that here. Mayo doctors are better than those in other places in one thing that illustrates the doctor shortage. I call it the “foot point.” Often, when a doctor enters your room, he stands with one foot pointed toward the door. As you ask questions, he’s pointed in the direction he’ll head soon. It does not encourage long talks. I used “his” in the previous sentence because I haven’t seen it in female doctors. I like female doctors better than male ones. I expect both have much the same clinical skills, but women doctors are more likely to treat you like a person. All of medicine could use more of that. I have respect for all the doctors who treated me at Mayo, but Dr. Mira Keddis stood out above the others for me. I’m not sure what eff ect it might have
communication. I think most Americans think, “I can talk, so I can communicate.” Take it from me, a lot of you can’t. Many in medicine seem to think that if they can’t tell patients specifi cs about aspects of their health woes, they won’t say anything. That’s not good. If they can’t give you a time estimate for upcoming procedures, for instance, they should tell you that — along with their best guess on when they can tell you. That’s just one example of poor communication. Finally, for you other geezers out there like me, if you’ve got decent health, enjoy it. Take the trip you’ve always wanted to. You never know how long you’ll have to do this.
Even Mayo is susceptible to an important flaw I’ve seen in other hospitals (and all other complex entities): poor communication. had on my hospital time, but I also like that Mayo docs are on salary, as are those at two other top clinics in America, Cleveland Clinic and Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. The fee-for-service system in use in most places wastes billions of health care dollars and allows some doctors to buy those $6 million Paradise Valley mansions shown on The Arizona Republic’s real-estate pages every Sunday. Even Mayo is susceptible to an important fl aw I’ve seen in other hospitals (and all other complex entities): poor

Grand marshals will represent all eras in Veterans Day Parade
DISCOUNT HOTLINE
The Phoenix Veterans Day Parade has been a passion of mine for more than two decades. When we started this event in 1997, we had no idea that it would grow into one of the largest of its kind in the nation. But beyond the beautiful fl oats, vintage cars, marching bands and pomp and circumstance one might expect at a parade of this magnitude, we’ll honor a very special group of individuals that represent all Arizonans who have worn the uniform of our great nation: the veteran grand marshals. Each year, the parade steering organization, Honoring America’s Veterans (HAV),in partnership with KTAR radio, handpicks veterans to be grand marshals. These veterans have served in each modern confl ict, and we celebrate them at the parade and during events leading up to Veterans Day. Sometimes this experience provides a boost to these selfl ess individuals, and other times it changes a life. About six years ago, Arizona Public Service created a special Veterans Day ceremony recognizing the parade grand marshals, which takes place in the days leading up to Veterans Day. APS employees who are also veterans host our marshals, their families, and other veterans for a ceremony featuring guest speakers, which have included senior military offi cers and political leaders like then-Sen. Jon Kyl and the late Sen. John McCain. They also feature one of our grand marshals, who share their stories of service and sacrifi ce, providing for a touching moment during this very patriotic event. The proceedings leading up to the parade always keep the spotlight fi rmly on our veteran grand marshals, ensuring we properly honor their service, and

with them, the service of all those Arizona veterans who they represent from our nation’s confl icts. Honoring America’s Veterans is proud to be a recipient of their kindness, but when the dust settles and the parade fl oats are retired for another year, it is fond memories made for our grand marshals that live on. We are blessed to have amazing volunteers to make this APS grand marshals event and the Phoenix Veterans Day Parade happen. We are grateful to our city government, which embraces this event with open arms. We are also grateful for the support of our business community, which makes a diff erence for HAV. This includes companies like the University of Phoenix, USAA, General Dynamics, TriWest Healthcare Alliance, and APS. Their support with fi nancial resources, volunteers, HAV board members and more have been essential to the success and growth of this event. You can see these veterans grand marshals in the parade, which will take place on Monday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. on the streets of Phoenix. For more information, go to honoringamericasveterans.org. After a hectic week, some seek relief at a spa, retreat to a yoga class or hike a mountain to fi nd some peace. For Ross and Erin Murray, however, the opportunity to decompress is just a few steps from the master suite of their Gilbert home. A private zen area sits just off their bedroom, complete with plush seating, meditation pillows and a pergola overhead. Yoga mats are nearby. An outdoor shower fl anks one side of the space and a hot tub on the other. At night, serene lighting adds to the vibe. “We have a lot of kids, so it’s a good place to sit, meditate and enjoy the outdoors,” Ross said, referring to his and Erin’s daughters, ages 8, 9 and 13. “It’s our place to unwind.” The peaceful domestic getaway is one of the ways the Murrays’ new home in the Toll Brothers at Whitewing luxury development has brought the comforts of indoor living to the outdoors.

Mom-in-law doesn’t know why she’s been getting cold shoulder Ask Linda Linda Cohen Guest columnist
Dear Linda: I have a daughter-in-law and son with grandchildren living out of state. I usually visit for long weekends, maybe four times a year. My daughter-in-law is bordering on rude when I visit, and there is nothing that I’ve said or done, that I’m aware of, to warrant such behavior. I have tried to start conversations that are about a variety of subjects, including her particular interests, and I’m met with short, curt answers or a nonreply. My late husband and I welcomed her into the family from the start. She comes from a warm and loving family and acts diff erently with them. I have gone out of my way to praise her childrearing skills as well as my son’s, and I have never knowingly critiqued about anything. Actually, quite the opposite, as I will praise her decorating skills, outfi ts, cooking, etc. When I visit and she walks into the room during a pleasant conversation, the atmosphere changes to negative energy. I have asked my son about this and he gives no reason. What’s really bothering me is now that my grandchildren are teens, they notice this and have said something to me in private. Usually it’s a comment like, “Why does Mom act like she’s mad at you?” I told them to talk to their mother about this as I have no idea why the icicles appear when I’m present. I could use your input in this matter, because I value my family and my son is an only child. Thank you so very much. — In the Dark Dear ITD: I’ve received other letters from both men and women with similar
issues, and I agree that this is a diffi cult situation. Your son apparently doesn’t want to open a can of worms regarding your request to fi nd out what’s bothering your daughter-in-law. That isn’t fair to you or the family. Pressing him to do so could cause more harm than good. Do you know if your grandchildren have asked their mother what her problem is as regards you? Sometimes, inlaws feel threatened by their spouse’s parent(s): background, like education or lack thereof; a close relationship that the spouse has with one or both parents; or some other issue that is making the in-law feel insecure. If this is the case, the problem isn’t yours. I would continue to be as nonjudgmental as possible. Genuinely praise things as you have been doing, and perhaps take your daughter-in-law to lunch. Maybe she might feel able to discuss what’s bothering her in a private setting. I’m sorry that you have waited so long to address this issue, but you might also consider writing a letter to your daughter-in-law expressing your concerns and your desire to have a closer relationship. I don’t know if you’re willing to do this, but at least you would be addressing the issue directly and not through your son or grandchildren. Don’t be surprised if what she is “stewing” about sounds insignifi cant to you. What is a “thorn in the side” to someone is totally subjective to them, so please no judgments. I would “listen” and “clarify” and, if necessary, apologize. I hope the situation improves for all of you. Linda Cohen is a Scottsdale life coach and Arizona licensed professional therapist. ments. “We wanted the opportunity for a lot of outside living spaces. That’s one reason why we loved this house,” Erin said. The Murrays requested the Zen nook, seeking a reenergizing spot that wasn’t in an area their kids would routinely spend time in. “We call it our super-secret grownup area,” Erin said of the space. “It’s where we recharge our batteries.” They worked with Phoenix-based Sonoran Landesign, one of two preferred landscape companies that Toll Brothers collaborates with, to make it happen. The outdoor shower concept is a popular amenity with homes, Daniel Benson, project manager for Toll Brothers, said. But the little touches like tiling, artifi cial grass and easy entry between the space and the bedroom were customized and ready upon move-in. “We allow the landscaping to begin in tandem. We’re able to do really cool things with interior and exterior materials to create seamless indoor-outdoor spaces that’s customized with everyone’s unique taste,” Benson said. Big structural features such as 16by 8-foot pocket doors off the living and dining room create that seamless access to the back patio when open. A pivot front door provides security needed for the recessed street-facing entry but also elegantly allows indoor and outdoor to meld when opened at every degree to their ranch-style design. “They did a very cool front entry door that’s very modern and opens up to the front courtyard and tied with theirs being a modern ranch house,” Benson said.
Cozy nooks under sky Exterior furnishings beg to be functional and lived in rather than just practical décor. This is clear with the fi rst steps onto the property. When arriving at the home, a walkway leads the Murrays’ guests through an idyllic desertscape scene accented by a boulder and rebar wall that resembles the one in the backyard and

boasts two large fountain bowls. After a few steps through the courtyard, a seating area consists of two facing sofas, pillows and a fi re pit between them, all on paver pads and artifi cial grass. It implores to be the site of evening conversations, cuddling and drifting off at midnight beneath the sky. Past the front pivot door, a stroll leads through the living room that fl aunts a fl oor-to-ceiling electric fi replace and cushy seating. Open pocket doors lead to the spacious backyard fi lled with alcoves that bring indoor privacy and intimacy under the sun and stars. Among them, a corner spot with a sofa and two hammock chairs under an oversized adjustable umbrella. Two Adirondack-inspired chairs look right at home in a Baja shelf in the pool and are shaded by another umbrella based underwater. “We spend every night out here and watch the sunset,” Erin said pointing to the two chairs. She gestured to the corner seating area and said, “And we look at the moon from there.” Ross, a mortgage lender who runs his own Homebridge Financial Services branch in Gilbert, said he and Erin eyed a Toll Brothers home for the amenities and options available to them. And they are pleased with the result. “Toll builds an amazing house. It’s the best builder when it comes to a higher-end home,” he said. “We fell in love with the house. We wake up every day and we pinch ourselves.” Know of a unique home in metro Phoenix that is not on the market that should be featured? Email carrie.watters@arizonarepublic.com.

Launching ICONIC HAUS blends style and charity Your Turn Renee Dee Guest columnist
What a diff erence 15 years and exponential growth in technology can make. This month, ICONIC LIFE digital luxury lifestyle magazine launched ICONIC HAUS 2020 to benefi t Phoenix Children’s Hospital. It’s a luxury designer showhouse that will take a concept that was a super exciting 14 years ago to the next level when it debuts in March 2020. We are launching an insta-storm and massive social outreach to share our journey. ICONIC HAUS, presented in partnership with my digital magazine and the iconic outdoor furnishings brand Brown Jordan, brings together 19 marquis and award-winning design talents and infl uencers under one roof for an 18-day show that is open to the public by paid admission and the site of many, many private events. I’m over the moon about this project, as it will be my seventh designer showhouse, the fi rst one I’ve done since 2005. And the energy of ICONIC HAUS is amazing, as I curated an incredible list of designers who are super collaborative and fi red up to make this home amazing. One of the inspirations for everyone’s passion started at the kickoff event, where award-winning architect CP Drewett of Drewett Works shared with the group of designers and infl uencers that “this home may be one of the most important homes of my career.” You could almost feel the air drawn out of the room as the proverbial bar was raised. The stunning Mid-Century Modern home, inspired by famed Mexican architect Luis Barragan, is located in Cameldale Estates, a private enclave of 11 homes under development by Bedbrock Development, which partnered with Ownby Design in the early design stages. Drewett designed all 11 homes and development is well under way. When you think of the work of Barragan, you think of bright-hued painted walls and plenty of austere, vertical massess. ICONIC HAUS, while inspired by Barragan, is a study of white accent-

ed by organic and natural materials also signature to Barragan’s work. We are grateful for the opportunity to work with such talented teams to create a mind-blowing, never-before-seen, spectacular home for guests to experience! It’s a feat deftly handled by our design manager, Lucia Burns, who has led this kind of project multiple times. The biggest thank you goes to Rich Brock, who turned over his home to us, and that takes a world of patience and generosity. Next, I’m so grateful to the amazing designers who are attacking this project with massive creativity and passion to share their signature work. I’m so grateful to our sponsors who make this all possible, like Sub-Zero/ Wolf/Cove and Circa Lighting, it takes an amazing team to pull this off with elegance and grace, and I’m blessed to work with incredible talent on ICONIC LIFE. ICONIC HAUS is not only destined to be the hottest design event in the Valley but with our calendar of events, it will be the “it place” to be this spring! From the invitation-only opening night event to Sunday brunch to luxury lifestyle classes to yoga on the lawn, all benefi t the Heart Center at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. So the fi rst and last thank-you goes to all of you who visit ICONIC HAUS 2020, where 100 percent of all ticket and event revenues benefi t PCH, one of the fi nest children’s hospitals in the world. We are excited to share this journey See HAUS, Page 18

Every year, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters nationwide, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Of those, about 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats. Each week, The Arizona Republic highlights a handful of the many pets up for adoption at Valley shelters. To check the status of a specifi c animal, please contact the shelter directly. Molly is a beautiful girl who is about 3 years old. She’s up for any type of fun, balanced with some downtime. She found her way to Friends for Life when she was rescued as a stray. Molly weighs about 77 pounds and would do best as the only pet in the home. She does know some basic commands, such as “sit,” and she walks well on a leash. Molly loves her toys and likes to play tug of war but would also love to cozy up with you while you read a good book or watch your favorite TV show.
Molly is available for adoption at 952 W. Melody Avenue in Gilbert. For more information, call 480-497-8296, or visit azfriends.org. FRIENDS FOR LIFE ANIMAL RESCUE
How to adopt: Molly is available for adoption at Friends for Life’s adoption center, 952 W. Melody Ave. in Gilbert. She is spayed, up to date on all shots, licensed with Maricopa County Animal Care and Control, and is microchipped. Her adoption fee is $195.
