WARNING Fisher regulators must be installed, operated, and maintained in accordance with federal, state, and local codes, rules and regulations, and Fisher instructions.

If a leak develops in the system, service to the unit may be required. Failure to correct trouble could result in a hazardous condition.

Call a gas serviceman to service the unit. Only a qualified person must install or service the regulator.

Introduction Scope of Manual This manual provides installation, maintenance, and parts information for Type S301D and S301F gas service regulators.

Product Description The S301D and S301F are pilot operated regulators intended for general pressure reduction and industrial applications using pressure factor measurement, also referred to as fixed factor billing. A downstream control line is required for S301F while S301D has internal pressure registration.

should be adequately protected from physical damage.

Under enclosed conditions or indoors, escaping gas, such as in the case of a ruptured diaphragm, may accumulate and be an explosion hazard.

CAUTION Like most regulators, S301D and S301F regulators have an outlet pressure rating lower than their inlet pressure rating. If actual inlet pressure can exceed the outlet pressure rating, outlet overpressure protection is necessary.

However, overpressuring any portion of the regulators beyond the limits in table 2 may cause leakage, damage to regulator parts, or personal injury due to bursting of pressurecontaining parts.

Some type of external overpressure protection should be provided if inlet pressure will be high enough to damage downstream equipment.

Common methods of external overpressure protection include relief valves, monitoring regulators, shutoff devices, and series regulation.

If the regulator is exposed to an overpressure condition, it should be inspected for any damage that may have occurred. Regulator operation below these limits does not preclude the possibility of damage from external sources or from debris in the pipeline.

from the entry of water and from blockage, see figure 1 showing pilot vent pointed down.

Before installing the regulator, check for damage which might have occurred in shipment. Also check for dirt or foreign matter which may have accumulated in the regulator body or in the pipeline and install the regulator so that flow is in the direction of the arrow cast on the body.

On S301F units only, connect downstream control line tubing to the tee in the lower casing, and run the tubing approximately 20 inches downstream. For best results, the control line tubing should be 3/8 inch O.D. or larger.

Do not install the regulator in a location where there can be excessive water accumulation, such as directly beneath a down spout. Position or protect the pilot vent opening

If the regulator is used in conjunction with a Type 289H relief valve, the 289H should be set 3/4 psi higher than the outlet pressure setting of the regulator.

Variation must not be higher than the maximum allowable inlet pressure for the seat ring size involved nor lower than the outlet pressure setting plus 1.5 psi (0.1 bar), the minimum pressure drop. See table 2 for maximum allowable inlet pressure. # For use on Type S301F only.

Type S301D and S301F The S301D and S301F should be protected against inlet pressures greater than the maximum listed in table 2 for each specific seat ring size. Inlet pressures in excess of the maximum recommended inlet pressure ranges may impair regulator performance. The regulator should be inspected for damage after any outlet overpressure condition.

Table 3 shows allowable inlet pressure ranges for maintaining the outlet pressure (psia) within specific limits.

Factory setpoint inlet pressures for various seat ring sizes are: 3/16 and 1/4 inch : 70 psig, 3/8 inch: 50 psig, 1/2 inch: 35 psig, and 3/4 inch: 15 psig.

PILOT RELIEF VALVE MAIN DIAPHRAGM

Startup CAUTION Pressure gauges should always be used to monitor downstream pressure during startup.

Procedures used in putting this regulator into operation must be planned accordingly if the downstream system is pressurized by another regulator or by a manual bypass.

pressurization of the regulator. The steps below apply to the typical installation as indicated.

If the downstream system is not pressurized by another regulator or manual bypass valve, use the following procedure to start-up the regulator.

1. Open valves downstream of the regulator.

1. Check to see that all appliances are turned off.

3. Pressure releases downstream.

2. Slowly open the upstream plug cock.

Principle of Operation

3. Check all connections for leaks.

4. Light the appliance pilots.

Adjustment To increase the outlet pressure setting of the regulator, the adjusting screw of the pilot (key 10, figure 4) must be turned clockwise. This requires loosening the locknut (key 11). To reduce the outlet pressure setting, turn the adjusting screw counterclockwise. Retighten the locknut. Do not remove the locknut or adjust the spring to produce an outlet pressure setting outside the range of 2 to 20 psig. A pressure gauge should always be used to monitor downstream pressure while adjustments are being made.

Shutdown Installation arrangements may vary, but in any installation it is important that the valves be opened or closed slowly and that the outlet pressure be vented before venting inlet pressure to prevent damage caused by reverse pressurization

2. Slowly close the upstream shutoff valve.

Both S301F and S301D have spring-to-close construction which permits “two path control� where changes in the reduced pressure register beneath the main regulator diaphragm and the pilot diaphragm as well, refer to figure 2. Inlet pressure is also used for the pilot supply pressure.

If downstream flow increases, lowering the reduced pressure below the regulator set point, pressure under the pilot diaphragm and the main regulator diaphragm decreases. The pilot opens to supply the required loading pressure increase. The increased loading pressure from the pilot overcomes the spring force, and the main regulator valve disk moves farther open, to supply the required flow.

When downstream pressure increases due to lowered demand, greater pressure is registered beneath the pilot and main diaphragms. The pilot starts to close, and the excess loading pressure bleeds off to downstream through the pilot body. With the lower loading pressure, the spring can move the main valve disk closer to the seat ring.

Since a main regulator diaphragm differential pressure of only about 1/2 psi is sufficient to stroke the main

regulator valve disk fully open, a relief valve is used to keep loading pressure in the main regulator spring case within acceptable limits. The relief valve opens and excess loading pressure is dumped into the downstream system when pilot output exceeds the downstream pressure by about 5 psi. The relief valve, located in the pilot body, is non-adjustable.

Under normal flow conditions, the excess loading pressure bleeds through the pilot restriction hole to the downstream system until the pressures are equal.

Maintenance WARNING

4. Lift the diaphragm assembly slightly so that the pusher post (key 7) can release the valve lever (key 14).

5. Unscrew the diaphragm rod from the pusher post. The diaphragm can be disassembled by removing the spring seat (key 6) and the retainer (key 8).

6. Reassemble in the reverse order of the above procedure. Be sure the diaphragm is aligned correctly.

The texturized side of the diaphragm should be towards the diaphragm head and lower casing. Be sure the diaphragm does not fold over at the flange when tightening the flange screws.

To Replace Valve Disk and Seat Ring 1. Remove the tubing connector (key 113, figure 5) from the regulator body (key 23, figure 3).

To avoid personal injury or equipment damage, do not attempt any maintenance or disassembly without first isolating the regulator from system pressure and relieving all internal pressure as described in “Shutdown�.

Regulators that have been disassembled for repair must be tested for proper operation before being returned to service. Only parts manufactured by Fisher should be used for repairing Fisher regulators. Relight pilot lights according to normal startup procedures.

Due to normal wear or damage that may occur from external sources, this regulator should be inspected and maintained periodically. The frequency of inspection and replacement of parts depends upon the severity of service conditions or the requirements of local, state, and federal rules and regulations.

2. Remove the cap screws (key 28) which hold the union ring portion of the lower casing to the body.

3. The regulator can be removed from the body, exposing the disk holder assembly (key 19) and the seat ring (key 24).

4. Examine the seating surface of the disk holder assembly.

If it is nicked, cut, or otherwise damaged, the disk holder assembly should be unscrewed from the valve stem (key 17A) and replaced.

5. Examine the seating edge of the seat ring (key 24). If it is nicked or rough, it should be unscrewed from the body with a 1-1/16 inch socket wrench and replaced with a new seat ring to provide proper shutoff. Treat the male threads of the new seat r ing with pipe compound before reassembling.

To Replace Main Diaphragm

6. Reassemble in reverse order of the above procedure.

Make sure that the lever has not become detached from the pusher post. Care should be taken so that the O-ring (key 27) is not cut.

1. Disconnect the tubing connectors (keys 111 & 117, figure 5) from the pilot.

2. Remove closing cap (key 4, figure 3) and unscrew the adjusting screw (key 3). Take out the lockwasher (key 104), upper spring seat (key 119), and spring (key 2).

The type number, seat ring (port) size, and date of manufacture are stamped on the nameplate. Always provide this information in any correspondence with your Fisher representative regarding replacement parts or technical assistance. If construction changes are made in the field, be sure that the nameplates are also changed to reflect the most recent construction.

3. Take out the spring case screws and lift the spring case (key 1) with attached pilot off the lower casing (key 10) and the diaphragm rod (key 105).
