Volunteer Spotlight Katie Tohill has been
volunteering with the Ronald McDonald House near Cox South since September 2013. Her passion for working with families and children is what drew her to the Ronald McDonald House. You can always count on Katie to bring in a smile and plenty of laughter every Friday morning. Her favorite memory of the Ronald McDonald House was sliding down the slide in the back yard with her partner in crime,
Danielle Wolford. This fall, Katie is moving to Kentucky to attend Murray State and continue her degree in child life specialties. She hopes to one day work for a non-profit organization like the Ronald McDonald House that helps families and children in need. When she’s not volunteering at the House, Katie enjoys going to movies, scrapbooking and baking desserts. All of our staff and families appreciate Katie’s dedication and service to the

Three weeks after the House at Mercy Children’s Hospital opened in 2012, Levi and Stephanie Forbes were welcomed as Houseguests. Levi and Stephanie stayed at the House from December 19th through December 28th while their son Wyatt Forbes was receiving treatment as a patient in Mercy Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Shortly after Wyatt was born they learned that he suffered from Ohtahara Syndrome, a rare neurological disorder affecting newborns in the form of epileptic seizures. Most commonly caused by metabolic disorders or structural damage in the brain, reasons from the disorder are unknown; Wyatt was one of only 200 cases worldwide. Unfortunately, due to his rare condition Wyatt passed away on October 20, 2013 at the age of 10 months. Wyatt would have celebrated his first birthday on December 17, 2013. Levi and Stephanie wanted to celebrate Wyatt’s
life by throwing a birthday party in his memory with gifts and donations for the Ronald McDonald House! During Wyatt’s celebration of life, hundreds of luminaries were released into the night sky in his memory. Following the celebration event, Levi and Stephanie stopped by the Ronald McDonald House at Mercy Children’s Hospital to present the numerous donations that were made in Wyatt’s memory. Their donation is pictured above and included baby formula, diapers of all sizes, baby bottles and clothes, receiving blankets and various children’s toys. In addition to this wonderful donation, they also presented cash and gift cards totaling $964! From the Forbes family, “God blessed our family with a precious beautiful boy last December 17th and for that, we will be forever grateful. Wyatt Denver Forbes was an amazing, strong baby boy.
Through him we have learned that there is nothing more important than to live each day reflecting on the blessings God has given. Live each day as if it were your last. Never pass an opportunity to tell someone you love them. Enjoy the life you have no matter the circumstances. Keep your focus on heavenly treasures versus earthly ones. No matter how small or insignificant you may think you are, please remember, you can still make the world a better place.” The Forbes family hopes to continue this tradition every year in honor of Wyatt. They were also excited to announce they are expecting their second child in July 2014! 3 Years of Smiles We are so fortunate to have Dr. Sarah Cimino as the General Dentist on board the Tooth Truck. Here she shares her reflections as she celebrates another anniversary with us! By: Dr. Sarah Cimino Time sure flies when you’re having fun! This is certainly true when it pertains to my time treating patients on the Tooth Truck. I feel like just yesterday I was reflecting in a Heart Beats article on the culmination of my first year aboard the Truck and now here we are with my third year drawing to a close. As I look back on the article I wrote in February of 2012, I had the following observations and reflections on my experiences up to that point and now after three full years:

- I still hold my Commercial Drivers License and can be found driving the Truck through the streets of Springfield on a weekly basis. I
have now become accustomed to the waves and honks from other truckers and bus drivers, especially when it’s our wonderful House volunteer, Larry Meinsen, out on his bus route (haha!).
- I have honed my child dental terminology to the point that I have to think twice before talking to another dental professional or dental repairmen so that I use the “proper” term. Our wonderful serviceman has had to ask me more than once to clarify which hand piece I was referring to when I mentioned “Mr. Bumpy” and the “whistling shovel”. - I am still in shock each time I see a child with more decayed teeth than healthy. The only silver lining to these situations is knowing that they have found the Tooth Truck where we can return their mouth to a cavity free state and instill in them the tools to prevent future decay.
- Thanks to the Tooth Truck’s Patient Needs Fund (made possible by the community’s pop tab donations), I have found myself in several shoe stores picking out the perfect new pair of kicks for a deserving young patient. I’ve gone out to get shoes for kids whose shoes were too small, full of holes, or who didn’t have any athletic shoes to wear for PE class. I never tire of pressing my face to the window of the Tooth Truck and watching as they jump, skip and run into school with their new shoes. - I have come to realize that movies, TV shows and superheroes come and go with the wind and I should give up trying to sound “cool” by acting like I know what is popular! I have, though, surprised many a patient when I correctly identified the character on his/ her backpack or t-shirt - earning back a few “cool” points. - I still have a minor feeling of
panic every time I have to go into a middle school and get caught in the halls when classes are changing. Those years can be rough for even the most confident of teenagers. It makes the Tooth Truck’s mission of boosting the self-esteem of all of our patients all the more relevant when you experience how quickly this age group can turn on someone they don’t deem “cool enough” - a very sad reality that I’ve come to face and embrace the challenge of addressing in our patients. - I haven’t had any other patients since my first year show up to an appointment in a Halloween costume in the middle of the summer but we have worked on many a patient celebrating a spirit day at their school - everything from crazy socks and hair to team sports, pajama day and mix-matched clothes. The most entertaining has been to treat patients in the middle of the school’s field day at the end of the school year - we’ve actually had to
have kids dry off before they could come on the Truck after a spirited water balloon fight, and struggled to not rub off a child’s face painting masterpiece during the course of treatment! - Sadly, I am no longer surprised when a child informs me that they don’t have a toothbrush, toothpaste or floss at home. I also no longer assume that a child knows how to floss as this seems to be a skill that most people think is unnecessary for children to learn, and most parents don’t buy their children floss. Since a large portion of the cavities we treat start in between the teeth from a lack of flossing, this is something that we highlight with each patient. We have also incorporated proper brushing and flossing technique instructions into our new mirror clings that each child is given to put on their bathroom mirror at home. - I still never tire of the drawings and notes that our little patients make for us in
appreciation. The walls of the Truck are overflowing with heartfelt messages of thanks and pictures of their smiling faces. These serve as a daily reminder for myself and the staff of why we come to work every day. As I embark on my fourth year with the Tooth Truck, I expect to have another year of being surprised and amazed by the funny, poignant and touching stories that each patient has to share - some that will make me laugh and some that will bring tears to my eyes - but all that will make me thankful to be allowed to do what I do. Emma is a 2013 graduate of Arizona State University with a degree in psychology. She earned her Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology in April 2013 and most recently served as a substance abuse counselor at a local counseling agency.
Emma is an active member of Alpha Delta Pi and, through her affiliation, enjoyed volunteering with the Ronald McDonald House in Phoenix, AZ. She has a passion for working with children and their families and is excited to have the opportunity to help people in the community. In her free time, Emma loves trying new places to eat,

In fact, according to the Independent Sector, a coalition of charities, foundations, corporations, and individuals that publishes research important to the nonprofit sector, reports the value of volunteer time is $22.14/hour, which means that our volunteers provided $258,440 in volunteer service in 2013! 9,025 hours of service were provided by VOLUNTEERS at BOTH Ronald McDonald Houses in 2013, 590 hours of service were provided by Tooth Truck volunteers…. and 2,058 hours of service were provided by volunteers for RMHC EVENTS. Volunteer Meeting at the
House near Cox South We would like to invite all volunteers from the House near Cox South to join us for one of our upcoming volunteer meetings. We will be discussing recent changes to several items related to laundry procedures, room restocking procedures and general House Operations. This is also a great opportunity for you to share your ideas and suggestions with our House staff. Please be sure to sign up in the office or let the manager on duty know which meeting you would like to attend. If you are not able to attend one of the meetings below, be sure to follow up with the manager on your shift so you can be fully informed. We will have drinks and refreshments available.
