February/March Birthdays

Family Dinner MSU Physical Therapy Students

When did you start providing meals at the Ronald McDonald House? We started providing meals with the Family Dinner Program at the Mercy House in July of 2015. We are excited to be serving monthly throughout the spring semester! How did you get involved with the Family Dinner Program? We got involved through our Physical Therapy Student group. All the Physical Therapy majors at MSU wanted to be a part of a community outreach program, and chose the Ronald McDonald House as one way to give back. What is your favorite thing about participating in the Family Dinner Program? Our favorite part about helping is getting to know the families. We love interacting and learning about families and their unique stories, it is very rewarding!

February 3 Rich Taylor

Do you have any favorite memories? Our favorite memories are just experiencing how appreciative the families are of the small contribution we make. It is amazing what sharing a meal and investing in a family at the Ronald McDonald House can do! What would you like to say to other groups who are considering volunteering with the Family Dinner Program? I would say it is an amazing and rewarding opportunity for any individual or group to get involved with. We are so thankful to be able to give back to such a great cause. #GoBears

Around the Houses Mission Moment The Latall Family

Our Ronald McDonald Houses provided a “home away from home for more than 800 families each year. Some of our families stay with us for months since they may have a child born prematurely and require a long stay in the NICU. We had the pleasure of serving the Latall family for nearly four months at the House at Mercy Kids. Matthew and Laura welcomed their daughter, Gabrielle, at just 28 weeks. As they say in the NICU, little Gabrielle needed time to eat and grow and she achieved several milestones while receiving the best care. As you can imagine, parents with a preemie experience several ups and downs during their stay, but the constant is the support, love and comfort they find at our Houses. The Latall family expressed sincere appreciation and offered support and tremendous patience toward each other and other families staying in the House. We are blessed to be part of this incredible journey and offer a beacon of hope at such a difficult time. Gabrielle has come a long way since her staff and Laura and Matthew brought her back to see us about a week after she was discharged. Look how much she has grown!

Sertoma Fitness Challenge

On January 14th, CrossFit teams from around the area gathered at CrossFit RTB in Springfield to compete in the 3rd Annual Sertoma Fitness Challenge, raising over $6,000 to benefit the Tooth Truck. This event would not have been possible without the support of the All-Star Smiles Sertoma Club, event coordinator Zane Davidson, the owners of CrossFit RTB and the dedicated competitors, and many sponsors and volunteers. Thank you!

Volunteer Spotlight Lexi Rawlings

Lexi Rawlings joined our volunteer team in June 2016. She is a senior at Missouri State majoring in Special Education with a History Minor. In her free time she enjoys reading books, and spending time with her friends, family, and puppies. Let’s learn a little more about Lexi! What is your favorite thing to do (or a couple of things) at the House? I enjoy talking with the families during dinner and cleaning/restocking rooms. How did you learn about the Ronald McDonald House and why did you start volunteering? I researched different places to volunteer in Springfield. I saw Ronald McDonald House Charities as a meaningful organization and wanted to fill my free time doing something purposeful.

What is your favorite memorable interaction with a family? One night while volunteering I had a great conversation with one of the families. We talked about food, the small towns we live/lived in, places we’ve been, etc. It was nice talking to a family that I had similar interests with and I hope they left encouraged that night.

Save the Date: 18th Annual Rock ‘n Ribs | April 21-22 Volunteers are needed for the 18th Annual Rotary Rock’n Ribs BBQ Festival. This year’s event will take place on April 21-22 at the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds and will include live music, kids play zone, and some amazing barbecue. The Tooth Truck (our Ronald McDonald Care Mobile®), is one of seven benefitting charities and we need YOUR volunteer help to ensure a successful event. Volunteers are needed to help at the gate with admission, check in and out competing teams, provide hospitality and security, and more. Registration can be completed online, or by contacting Ely Wright, at Ely.Wright@RMHCozarks.org or 417-820-0764. Spots are filled on a first come, first served basis, so sign up as soon as possible. February marks my sixth year with the Tooth Truck….6! Can you believe it? I know that all of our loyal readers have been waiting on baited breath for my annual recap so without further ado:

2016 was another stellar year full of wonderful patients and heart-warming smiles. Here are the six stories that stuck with me this year (and, of course, the pictures to go with them).

when we showed him we still had his picture on our wall and then humored me by posing for another picture. His treatment over the years has totaled $1,929.

1. Kayandre - I first met Kayandre as a kindergartener at Boyd Elementary back in 2011. He had a contagious smile and outgoing personality that had the whole staff in laughter on multiple occasions. On one such visit, we snapped a photo of the two of us that has hung on the wall of the Truck ever since. This year I had the pleasure of seeing him again while we were at Weaver Elementary and I was pleased to find he was the same jovial kid I remembered with a bright smile to match. He blushed

2. Rowan and Morgan - I had the pleasure of meeting a vivacious set of twin first graders this year when we made our first visit to Delaware Elementary. They were hands down some of the best patients at their school and impressed me and the staff with their manners and gratefulness for the services we were providing. During our interactions, we identified some additional needs for each girl outside of their dental care. We were able to use utilize the Patient Needs Fund (from pop tab recycling) to do some shopping. Each girl got several new outfits, a winter coat, backpack, and tennis shoes. I had to hold back tears as I gave them their bags of goodies, listened to them ooh and ahh over each new item, and helped them put on their new shoes. As I walked them back to class they told me that they’d never had shoes that

were so “squishy and bouncy” before and how excited they were for the weather to turn cold so they could wear their new coats. Rowan and Morgan received $5,885 in treatment on the Tooth Truck as we repaired a combined 16 cavities.

3. Dorrian - If you read our October Heartbeats article then you are already familiar with this sweet 8th grade student from Pipkin Middle School. It’s not often I get to speak to our patients’ parents, but since Dorrian will be benefiting from several of our community partnerships (Dr. Tara Cash for orthodontics and Dr. Chris Meyer for oral surgery), I had the opportunity to speak to his mom about the process. The look on her face as she realized her son would finally be able to smile with confidence was something I’ll never forget. I’m excited to watch the process myself and share with our supporters through follow-up articles.

4. Taylionna - I had the pleasure of meeting this gorgeous seven year old the week before Christmas at Westport Elementary. Her smile and personality were bigger than she was. As she told me all about her winter break plans, I noticed one small hiccup - a chipped front tooth. I asked her if she would like it fixed before her holiday party at school (and winter break) and she could barely contain herself as she enthusiastically nodded yes. I don’t have to tell you what her reaction was when she saw the result - just check out the picture collage!

5. Cesar - Like Keyandre, Cesar is a bit of a celebrity on the Tooth Truck because we have been unable to take down his sweet picture from when we first met him in 2011. At that time he was a preschool student with the Head Start program and was new to our country and language. Through a mutual love of Toy Story, we were able to bond and made it through seven appointments to repair his many cavities. While I have seen his smiling face in a few school hallways since then, it had been awhile since he had been on the Tooth Truck. I was delighted to get to show him the picture from his first visit to the Truck and pose for another one this year. Even more exciting is the fact that Cesar has gone from a 4 year old with 16 cavities to now a 10 year old with only 1. Over the two visits in the past 5 years we have provided Cesar with $5,912 in dental treatment. 6. Bethany - I am a proud fellow graduate of Glendale High School and so I had to save my last memory for a patient from my alma mater. Bethany’s story has

been featured this year in Heart Beats and our annual campaign so I’m sure most of you have seen her smiling face grace your mailbox (whether physical or computer). What you haven’t seen, and what I don’t even know if I can put in words, is the emotion that her story brings me even now as I type the words. I’ve restored a lot of front teeth and seen many children look in a mirror and smile when they see their new front tooth. Until Bethany, though, I’ve never had a child turn to me, with tears in their eyes, and embrace me in a hug as they thanked me from the bottom of their heart.

Children Who Received Treatment: Boys & Girls Town, Boyd Elementary, Campbell Elementary, McGregor Elementary, Weaver Elementary and Westport Elementary

These six memories are just the icing on a very large cake, but hopefully they give you a small glimpse into the amazing lives that we are able to change thanks to the wonderful support of our community. So thank you to all of you for allowing me to do what I love for these past 6 years.

Welcome, Christopher!

The Tooth Truck is happy to welcome Christopher Heye to its amazing team of volunteers! Christopher is a predental student at MSU who first became interested in volunteering with the Tooth Truck through his friends in the MSU Pre-Dental Society. Christopher is also a swimmer for MSU, and spends a great deal of his free time in the pool! Welcome aboard!

Volunteer Orientation

All-Star Weekend Save the Date: June 2 & 3

It’s an ALL-STAR weekend June 2-3, 2017. The 16th Annual Sertoma GRIN IRON CLASSIC (all-star high school football game) and the 6th Annual Sertoma GRIN ACTION CLASSIC (all-star high school volleyball tournament) will take place at Parkview High School in Springfield. RMHC of the Ozarks and the All-Star Smiles Sertoma Club are hosting this “All-Star Weekend” featuring Southwest Missouri’s all-stars, all graduated seniors. And…it all benefits the Tooth Truck! Volunteers are needed for both events and we’d love for YOU to join us. If you are interesting in helping, contact Ely Wright at Ely.Wright@ RMHCozarks.org or at 417-820-0764. Dates and times for volunteer shifts will be announced in April!

We are thrilled to introduce a new opportunity for Ronald McDonald House and Tooth Truck volunteers, staff and board members—RMHC Volunteer Orientation. The goal is for new volunteers to connect with other members of our RMHC family and learn more about our programs and events together on day one of their volunteer journeys! We plan to hold orientations each month as we welcome new volunteers to our programs, and would love to include current volunteers in our efforts. If you are interested in participating in one or more orientations talk to Ely or Alicia at the Houses or Mindy on the Tooth Truck. The first orientations are scheduled for February 21 at 6PM and February 25 at 10AM.
