Family Dinner Spotlight Lois Hirschler, Jessica Myers and Family When did you start providing meals at the Ronald McDonald House? We started serving in September of 2017 How did you get involved with the Family Dinner Program? Bayliee (Jessica’s daughter) came up with the idea. Bayliee wanted to start doing nice things for others. Jessica called Lois and asked if she would be interested in helping them cook. What is your favorite thing about participating in the Family Dinner Program? Meeting all of the new people and cooking for them. The kids love it when we make cookies.
What would you say to anyone considering volunteering for the Family Dinner Program? It is very rewarding, do it. You don’t realize how much it means until you do it. Other comments? Jessica has stayed at a Ronald McDonald House before with her children and knew how much it meant so she wanted to give back. Both ladies agreed that being able to talk to the families and give them someone other than a nurse or doctor to talk to is very rewarding.

Ronald McDonald Houses of the Ozarks
What is your favorite thing to do (or a couple things) at the House? I like working in the Kitchen. What do you enjoy in your free time? I am a gym nut. I enjoy exercise. I love Pilates. I also love theater and music. I attend Springfield Little Theater and The Symphony. I also travel frequently to my daughter’s home in California and my son’s home in Iowa.”
House Near Cox South STATS
Extracurricular activities? I enjoy cooking. My favorite is Mediterranean food. Do you volunteer anywhere else in the Springfield community? If yes, where? I volunteer with Ambassadors for Children. I’ve been volunteering there since it opened 18 years ago. How did you learn about the Ronald McDonald House? I learned about the Ronald McDonald House through Ambassadors for Children. They originally started the Kids Closet in the basement of RMH. I knew that any Non For Profit that was supportive of another Non For Profit is where I wanted to spend my time.”
January 2018 Do you have any favorite memories? In 2016, I won the Barbara L. Appleby Award for Excellence in Volunteerism. I did not plan on attending the volunteer dinner but, the House Manager at the time, lied to me and said Jan Ricketts was winning an award so I had to go to support her. I sat all night waiting to hear about the award Jan got, and it was me instead! What do you enjoy most about volunteering with our organization? I really enjoy working with Jan Ricketts.

Her grandparents used the House near Cox South during her stay and were very appreciative of the services that were offered. The family wanted to extend their thanks to all of the staff, volunteers, and family dinner groups for their generosity.

7 Year Itch… Just Kidding! By Dr. Sarah Cimino
There’s a psychological phenomenon known as the “seven-year itch” whereby people tend to seek change in their relationships (both personal and work) at the
seven-year mark. Well I’m happy to report that the only change I’ve eagerly anticipated at my 7-year mark is the facelift that the Tooth Truck recently
underwent. As such, I’d like to take this opportunity (where I usually recap my year) to introduce you to the new look of the Tooth Truck! Along with the Program Director of the Tooth Truck, Mindy Muñoz, and the Manager of the Healthy Smiles Academy, Tamara Maddox, I was privileged to select and photograph some wonderful patients to feature on our new exterior wrap and graphics. The unique aspect of the wrap is that we were able to use actual Tooth Truck patients and Healthy Smiles Academy participants so our Tooth Truck is truly a representation of our program, mission, and the community we are a part of. (The wrap, its design and installation were contributed by the estate of Herb Lotman, a former Ronald McDonald House Charities Global Trustee.) Since the completion of the project, we’ve been able to continued on next page
Volunteer Welcome
The Tooth Truck is excited to welcome its newest volunteer, Olivia Horton! Olivia started volunteering for the organization by helping with the Healthy Smiles Academy, and has decided to expand her skill set by joining the Tooth Truck! We’re so happy to see her interact with our patients and help teach them about excellent oral hygiene. Welcome aboard Olivia!

reconnect with a number of the featured children and photograph them with their actual picture on the Tooth Truck. As you can imagine, they have each been beaming and full of pride when we have brought them back to the Truck to see their picture. Several have reported that their first sight of their picture on the truck was as they passed it on the road and their parents excitedly tried to pull out their phones to take a picture. Another child said he had several classmates tell him he was “famous” and that they saw his picture on a “billboard” driving down the road. Recently, we looked out the window of the Tooth Truck to see an entire kindergarten class lined up on the sidewalk as they took a “field trip” to see the picture of one of their classmates who was featured on the Tooth Truck. With an integral part of the Tooth Truck’s mission being to increase the self esteem of our young patients and help them become comfortable with the dental setting, the new look of the Tooth Truck is accomplishing that before the patients even step foot inside. We’ve had children recognizing their classmates or friends and others who are simply reassured by seeing a smiling face as they approach the Tooth Truck. With children of all ages, genders and ethnicities featured; every

child is bound to find someone on the outside of the Truck they can relate to. Our staff can then use that connection between the new patient and the ones featured on the Truck to convey the story of how all of those smiling faces also learned to brush and take care of their teeth just like they are teaching them. While I’ve always had a reason to smile each of my seven years of work on the Tooth Truck, the new graphics literally put a smile on my face before I even step onto the Truck every
morning. I hope each of you will see the Truck around town sometime and feel the same smile sneak across your face as you gaze at the wonderful children we’ve been able to engage with over the past year. Thank you again for your continued support of a wonderful program that I call my home-away-fromhome. Now please enjoy a few of our featured patients as they pose with their photographs on the newly updated exterior of the Tooth Truck.
Welcome Chloe
Chloe Williams is a Glendale student interning with the Healthy Smiles Academy program this spring. Over the next few months she will assist in many ways, from helping to prepare supplies for future sites to checking in with schools currently brushing through the program. Chloe is excited to have the opportunity to impact the oral hygiene of children in our community through her internship. We are excited to have you with us, Chloe!
