Volunteers Needed!

YOU can help us spread the word about volunteer needs at BOTH Houses. We have several in-House shifts open for volunteers to adopt on a weekly basis, especially with many volunteers on summer break. The primary responsibility of an in-House volunteer is to help provide a “home away from home” to families and children. From checking in families, baking special desserts, restocking rooms, cleaning, and answering the phone, to assisting in newsletter distribution, running errands and computer entry, our volunteers continue to directly and indirectly affect the lives of thousands of families each year. Our volunteers work directly with the House management staff to ensure successful House operations and serve as the “heart” of our programs. For more information about joining our RMH volunteer family, please contact Brent Stock (House near Cox South) at 417.875.3501 or via email at Brent.Stock@RMHCozarks.org or Brian Powers (House at Mercy Children’s Hospital) at 417.820.0764 or email at Brian. Powers@RMHCozarks.org. We are currently recruiting additional volunteers for the shifts shown to the right.

Happy Father’s Day June 15th

Wishing each and every dad the very best Father’s Day this year! Celebrate and enjoy your special day! When I scratched my knee, Or if I bumped my head, When I was afraid of the dark, Or that thing under my bed, When I cried in the night, Or even in the day, You were there for me, To make it all okay. You tickled my feet, And laughed at all my jokes. You taught me to believe, In having high hopes. You are my father You did what you had to do. But more than a father You are my friend too. You made everything good, That was once bad. I just want you to know I love you Dad. Written by: Jennifer S. Family Dinner Spotlight

Crighton, Olive & Dunn Surgical Group When did you start providing meals for families at the Ronald McDonald House? We began serving meals in June of 2013. Our office had recently begun what we call the “COD Giving Ways” initiative and decided to make RMH a part of this effort. How did you hear about or get involved with the Family Dinner Program? A couple of our staff members hold a deep personal connection with the Ronald McDonald House. Providing meals on an ongoing basis gives us the opportunity to involve all of our staff over time. The Ronald McDonald House clearly matched our desire to have an opportunity of a more personal means of giving to others. What is your favorite thing about participating with the Family Dinner Program? It can be overlooked, but we really enjoy being able to work together in a different setting other than our own clinic. It allows us to see our co-workers in a different environment and strengthens our working relationships we have with one another.

honor to serve you tonight, sir.” After that evening we decided to make that phrase a part of every dinner we serve and had it monogrammed onto our aprons. Other Comments There is something somewhat extraordinary to the overall setting of the Ronald McDonald House. Maybe it is the thought of children being afflicted with medical problems at such a young age. Or whether it’s the warm and inviting facilities guests come in to; yet the guests have contrasting realities of such heartache and emotion in which to deal with in the present. No matter the reason – providing for the guests of the Ronald McDonald House unlocks the true beauty and the power of giving to another in need. You give to another person, which will never likely have the chance to pay you back.

Marcee Binder of Independence, KS and her mother, Marsha Carter of Chanute, KS contacted the Ronald McDonald House in April for volunteer opportunities. Marcee shared that she is a United Methodist pastor serving two small rural churches in Southeast Kansas and her mother is retired. Sadly, in December, Marcee’s father passed away from cancer. Following his death, Marcee and her mother made it their mission to honor his legacy by volunteering in different places when they leave town, just as he did when he traveled while in the military. Marcee and Marsha chose to volunteer at the House at Mercy Children’s Hospital—from the moment they arrived they brought about a cheery atmosphere to the House! While volunteering at the House, they chose to bake cookies because “life is always better with a cookie!” Following their cookie baking adventure, they generously provided a donation to support our newly-launched Happy Wheels program. Pictured are Marcee and Marsha with their basket of goodies for the families as well as items to support the Happy Wheels program—tissues, individual snacks, crayons, as well as Walmart gift cards to purchase additional items. We thoroughly enjoyed meeting Marcee and Marsha and having them bring a little bit of sunshine to the House at Mercy. Hugs were definitely shared upon their departure! From the families, staff, and volunteers at the Ronald McDonald House at Mercy Children’s Hospital—thank you for sharing your time with us!

Welcome to the House, Melanie Ward

We welcome Melanie Ward as the newest Assistant Manager at Ronald McDonald House at Mercy Children’s Hospital. She is currently attending Ozarks Technical Community College with plans to transfer to Evangel University next year to complete her bachelor’s degree in Child Psychology. In her free time, she enjoys reading, running, browsing through Pinterest, and playing with her Yorkipoo, Max. She also works part time as a floral designer at Flowerama. She has been a long-time friend with Amber Campbell, fellow Assistant Manager at Mercy. We welcome you to our RMHC family, Melanie!

RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE AT MERCY CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL

Volunteer Spotlight Debbie Williams first started volunteering with Ronald McDonald House in 1997 and rejoined our volunteer team at the House at Mercy Children’s Hospital when it opened in November 2012. Her many years of service with RMH began when she learned about the organization at a community service fair at Drury University. She stopped by our booth, picked up a brochure, and the rest is history! Debbie’s favorite aspect of volunteering is meeting families and visiting with them as they share their stories. For those thinking about

volunteering with RMH, she says this: “Definitely get involved! Helping provide a ‘home away from home’ for families is so satisfying and gives you a warm, fuzzy feeling knowing you’ve helped them during their stay.” Debbie has been married for 40 years and has three children and four grandchildren. She loves playing grandma! She retired from Springfield Public Schools a couple of years ago and now works part time for Mercy Hospital to stay active. Debbie’s hobbies include biking, walking, dancing, flower

gardening, drinking coffee and talking with friends, and baking cookies. Ronald McDonald House has been immensely blessed to have Debbie as a part of the team over the last 17 years. Thank you for your dedicated and caring service, Debbie!

At the end of June, Morgan Jensen, long-time Assistant Manager will be leaving behind Springfield, MO to start a new adventure in Frisco, Texas (north Dallas area)! Morgan and her husband will be starting a Chiropractic and Wellness Center in Texas. She started working for the House as an Assistant Manager in April of 2008. Although she has MANY great memories from the House over the past six years, her favorite is working with volunteers in preparation of the annual Homes Tour event. Thank you for your years of service to the mission of Ronald McDonald House Charities! You will be missed.

We would also like to thank Angela Hammond for her service to the House near Cox South. Angela graduated in May from Missouri State University and has accepted a fulltime position at Midwest Family Broadcasting. She has been working as an Assistant Manager since February of 2012. She is excited to start her new career and settle into her new home. Angela hopes to soon bring her kids by to start their volunteer experience at the House. We look forward to seeing you around the House, Angela! Randi Villines began her journey with Ronald McDonald House Charities in 2011 as a volunteer with the Tooth Truck. By January 2012, Randi transitioned from serving as a volunteer to joining our team as an Assistant Manager at the House near Cox South Hospital. She graduated this past May with her associate degree and has accepted a position working as a scribe at Cox Hospital. We look forward to welcoming Randi back the House as a volunteer after her June wedding! Thank you for your service to our families and children, Randi!

Tooth Talk School Year Wrap Up As the Tooth Truck wraps up another great school year, we want to take a look back at some of our achievements: We started the year at Pipkin Middle School back in August. It is always one of our busiest schools and this year was no different. During our stay, we had the opportunity to treat 66 students and provided treatment for a dollar value of $39,500. What a great start to the school year! Since visiting Pipkin, we have been on the move. While spending the majority of our time in Springfield, we have also had the opportunity to extend our services to students in Clever, Billings, Republic, and Willard schools. These outlying communities always go above and beyond to welcome us and extend a helping hand. All together, the Tooth Truck stopped at 33 different

school sites providing nearly 1,500 children with dental treatment valued at $760,718. The amazing Tooth Truck staff provides quality dentistry while also making a lasting impression on each and every child we meet. What an incredible accomplishment! As the school year comes to a close, we want to express our appreciation to our incredible partners who help keep us running smoothly. Their commitment to helping us fulfill our mission ensures our ongoing success: All of the incredible School Nurses Chris and Adam Griffen of A&J Power Systems Keith Harp of Harps RV Kent Ward of Ward Conciliation Bob and Felicia with Patterson Dental

Our Families Thank You

We enjoy reading the wonderful thank you notes we receive from families staying at the Houses and want to share some of their kind words with you. Their stays are made easier because of each and every volunteer and donor who supports the Ronald McDonald Houses. Thank you for making a difference in our families’ lives!

This was the most awesome gift we have ever received. Thank you for having us. You guys are awesome! I enjoyed my stay and I’m very THANKFUL FOR YOU! Everything was great! You guys do some truly amazing things for all the families! You made a difficult visit much easier and more comfortable – just like home!

It was such a relief and a huge burden was lifted to have some place close to my baby in the NICU to be able to go to for showers or to get some rest without leaving the building or driving an hour home. This is truly an amazing program and such a blessing. God bless you all!
