It’s been an amazing year! Our second Ronald McDonald House® opened at Mercy Children’s Hospital on November 30, 2012. This achievement, along with the continued operations of our first House near Cox South AND the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile® (fondly known as the Tooth Truck), have only been possible because of many generous donors, volunteers, board members and staff whose dedication and commitment allow us to fulfill our mission of helping children and families. It’s a spirit that was started by our founder, Joseph M. Post, and continues every day. Ronald McDonald House Charities® of the Ozarks got its start 25 years ago. We’re celebrating by sharing “25 Ways to Give”! We hope you
received our special mailing and noticed our billboards around Springfield. Monetary charitable donations keep our lights on at both Houses and keep the Tooth Truck on the road. From life-threatening health problems to serious dental needs, kids and families across the Ozarks can count on us to be there. Help us spread the word and encourage others to get involved! Whether donating time and talents or collecting pop tabs, our volunteers and donors show how much they care about children and families in our community with all the wonderful ways they give, each and every day. Learn more at www.RMHCozarks.org. Click on the “Events” tab and look for “25 Ways to Give”. With sincere thanks, Bonnie Keller President & CEO

The mission of Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC®) of the Ozarks is to create, find and support programs that directly improve the health and well being of children in the Ozarks. Our first priority is to provide a “home away from home” for families of seriously ill and injured children receiving treatment in Springfield’s medical facilities. Our first Ronald McDonald House near Cox South opened on March 20, 1988 and has welcomed over 8,300 families. Our second Ronald McDonald House, located on the 6th floor of Mercy Children’s Hospital has helped over 200 families since opening on November 30, 2012. RMHC’s second cornerstone project, the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile, (fondly known as the “Tooth Truck”), provides dental treatment and prevention education for children that qualify for the free and reduced school lunch program in the Springfield area. The Tooth Truck has helped more than 14,800 children over the past 11 years through 37,450 dental appointments and treatment valued at $8.6 million. In addition, an in-school tooth-brushing program has been implemented with Early Childhood students in 5 Springfield schools.

A Future Shaped
By The Tooth Truck by Taylor Klingenberg
Growing up as a child who didn’t have much and a mother working two jobs to support us, I appreciated all the things that helped me through life. I went to the Boys and Girls Club for years and had a lot of people who cared for me to keep me there. The Boys and Girls Club meant everything to me, it was my place to be me, to learn to be a leader, to help those who need it, to go out there and make a difference in people’s lives, to follow your dreams no matter

After experiencing the services of the Tooth Truck, Taylor Klingenberg was inspired to enter the dental field to make a difference in the lives of others. In addition to her studies to become a dental assistant, Taylor is volunteering on the Tooth Truck on a weekly basis. She uses her personal experience as a patient to connect with each child to ensure a positive dental visit. Taylor’s story demonstrates the lasting impact the Tooth Truck makes in the lives of its patients.
how impossible they seemed, and to never give up no matter what you’ve gone through. One of the biggest impacts on my life from my time at the Boys and Girl Club was the Tooth Truck. The Tooth Truck is an amazing organization that dedicates its time to helping people that do not have the money to go to a dentist, and for me that’s what I needed most. For me, it is truly amazing to know that you can change peoples’ lives doing what they do every day, seeing the finished result and a perfect smile. I want to become a dental assistant and am working hard in school at OTC for the opportunity to change peoples’ lives. As a young girl who didn’t have much,

the Tooth Truck inspired me with a dream I am working towards, to change people’s smiles and make them healthy and confident to be who they are. I love helping people and I want to go out there and change the lives of others who need it. Becoming a dental assistant would make me the happiest person knowing that, with my knowledge, I could change millions of lives, one smile at a time.

Share a Heart Campaign! The 20th annual Share a Heart Campaign was held January 25-February 28 at more than 60 McDonald’s® Restaurants in the Ozarks. For the first time, the Campaign’s net proceeds surpassed the $100,000 mark, with total net proceeds of more than $116,000 –- all to support the children and families at the Ronald McDonald House near Cox South and the House at Mercy. Generous McDonald’s customers purchased $1 red paper hearts, $5 pink hearts and $20 gold hearts, contributing over $93,000 of the grand total. (This is the 20th year that McCann Printing has contributed all of the hearts and posters for this event!) With each heart purchased, customers received an Official Entry Form for a chance to win a $1,000 gift card provided by Great Southern Bank. The remaining funds were contributed by our generous sponsors (see logos at right), and we can’t thank them enough for their significant gifts! The Strength to Win (Continued from Page 1)
year? She seemed a little drained and cranky. Nothing out of the ordinary. A trip to the family doctor showed anemia -- a low level of red blood cells in her body. A week later the anemia worsened. A late Friday afternoon trip to the Children’s Hospital was advised. Anomalies in the blood work were immediately apparent. Further tests were needed. Complications arose with the lab and the emergency room at the hospital. It was decided to make the four-hour drive home, let her get some rest over the weekend, and then return bright and early on Monday morning. More driving, more stress, more sick child, more unanswered questions. Frustration. Monday morning found us in the operating room of the Children’s Hospital. Sleep deprived and travel weary, we had to listen as the physician diagnosed our child: Cancer. That’s when the whirlwind started. The questions came from every direction What is the cancer? Where is it? How will we treat it? How will we pay for it? Who will take care of our other daughter we left at home? Who will explain this to her? What’s the next step in treating Peeka’s cancer? Who are all these people in her room taking her blood and listening to her chest? Why can’t she sleep? Is she going to die? Imagine finding out that your daughter has a form of cancer that you can’t even pronounce, and then hours later having to make life-changing decisions with only a couple hours of sleep under your belt. That’s the reality. Thankfully, there was a ray of sanity. After what seemed like hundreds of phone calls and texts and emails and tear-filled conversations later, Peeka was in the arms of a Patron Saint. The Saint of Lost
Causes. St. Jude. Once she was settled in the care of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, our world began to exist again. We knew our daughter had the best chance of surviving, living, and thriving. More importantly, we had a home to go to at night. That home was the Ronald McDonald House. While Peeka slept in the hospital and underwent the necessary procedures and treatments for her condition, one caregiver would stay with her in hospital and the other would have a chance to actually feel rested. The Ronald McDonald House let us get away to have the mental acuity needed to be Peeka’s advocates, and be able to give Peeka the attention she needed. We had to be able to think and function in order to deal with the daily decisions that now made up Peeka’s life. The Ronald McDonald House made that possible. About two months after her original diagnosis, Peeka was able to leave the hospital. You know where she spent her first full night’s sleep in eight weeks? In the caring arms of the Ronald McDonald House. With her family. In a clean and sterile environment. With other kids who were dealing with the same thing (and worse) that she was dealing with. In a place where her family could care for her and be with her. She was out of the hospital, but close enough to feel secure being away. This amazing place was as safe as the hospital, but with her own bed, with her own pillow, without being awakened every four hours during the night. Heaven on earth. The Ronald McDonald Houses give families much more than a place to sleep. They provide families who are instantly burdened with the most horrible situation imaginable the ability to face that challenge and succeed. They give these families shelter,

food, love, and a common ground with other families who are just as frightened. Just as unsure. Just as tired. They give these families what they need most. Hope. Hope to wake up the next morning. Courage to face the day. Determination to face whatever challenges might arise, and win. Thanks to the healing properties her new home at the Ronald McDonald House, Peeka’s cancer has been in remission for nearly two years. This December she will finish her last week of chemotherapy and the good doctors at St. Jude will bless her ‘Cured’. She will be cured of a cancer that 50 years ago would have spelled almost certain death. The Ronald McDonald House has been there for Peeka since day one. At least once a month, she still has complications with her therapy which necessitate an overnight stay close to the hospital. Amazingly enough, she looks forward to this. “We get to spend the night with Donnetta, right Daddy?” She asks this to make sure her favorite House Manager is going

to be around to hang out with her and meet her at the front door with a big hug and smile. That is the true magic of the Ronald McDonald House. The ability to make a five-year-old prefer to stay two hours away from her home so she can be next to the hospital and the immediate care she might need in her immunosuppressed state. The ability to make a child with cancer enjoy her weekly visits to the hospital for her chemotherapy. The ability to make an actual “home away from home”. With a family away from home. With all the love and caring that comes along with that. Thank you, everyone, at the Ronald McDonald Houses around the country and the world. You
New Sign Honors
Joe Post’s Legacy A new road sign outside of the Ronald McDonald House near Cox South Hospital was unveiled on June 27, providing permanent recognition of our organization’s late founder, Joseph M. Post. The unveiling was attended by Mr. Post’s family, friends, RMHC board members, volunteers and staff, as well as several member of the founding board of directors. Our dedicated volunteers are the heart and soul of our organization and Joe Post was our very first volunteer and Chairman of the Board. In the mid-1980s, he rallied the community around the idea of
building the 111th Ronald McDonald House in the world. Joe inspired so many to join the effort, from Cox Health to McDonald’s® to our first board of directors and countless donors–all of which ensured that our 14-bedroom Ronald McDonald House opened debt-free in 1988. Last year, Joe passed away at the age of 90. Throughout the past 25 years, he continued his support of the Ronald McDonald House by giving of his time, treasure, alwaysavailable advice, and nurturing of this wonderful House. We are honored to permanently recognize Joe and his wonderful legacy.

have given our daughter and her family not just a place to stay, but the home she needs to win the battle she has to fight every day -- and helped give her the strength to win. Thank you. Patten and Su Traver are the parents of Peeka and her nine-year-old sister, Jolia. Peeka receives treatment at Mercy’s St. Jude Affiliate Clinic every Monday. When in Springfield for treatments, she and her family have found a wonderful home at the Ronald McDonald House near Cox South since September 2012. The Travers live in Mountain Home, AR where they own Scuba Doo Dive Shop.

Care to Learn and the Tooth Truck We’re pleased to announce a new lead contributor and partner for the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile—Care to Learn! A program that meets the emergent needs of students in the areas of health, hunger, and hygiene, Care to Learn has provided assistance to students more than 150,000 times through their frontline in the schools of faculty, bus drivers, administrators, nurses, counselors and others.
Their goal is to end suffering quickly by identifying students in need of help. We’re not only grateful for Care to Learn’s financial support, we are thrilled with the synergy that our partnership is already producing to reach children most in need to access dental services. We are proudly displaying the Care to Learn logo on the exterior of the Tooth Truck, in recognition of their
$25,000 gift. This fall, Care to Learn and the Tooth Truck will present Tooth Truck patients and our in-school brushing program students with a new mirror cling and information card. After receiving individual instruction from Tooth Truck staff and volunteers, students can display instructions for brushing and flossing right on their mirrors at home. Special thanks to Morey Mechlin and friends at Care to Learn for their exemplary support!

Twenty-three sixth graders at Summit Intermediate in Nixa, Missouri presented the Ronald McDonald House with a check for $101.00! They raised the funds through a service learning project they call the “Wallace Warriors.” Each Friday, their classroom has a fun spirit day (crazy hair day, PJ day, and more) to celebrate helping others and working together. Each student brings in a dollar, or whatever they can, to contribute to the Wallace Warrior fund. Then at the end of the month, they give all of what was raised to a local charity they believe in and want to encourage. They chose the Ronald McDonald House because of how many families we help everyday. These kids are truly making a difference in the world and paying it forward! Thank you for your wonderful donation!
