LoveLETTER Issue No. 58 • Fall 2014

Finnegan’s Story By Elisabeth “Ashley” White, Willard MO It all started 5 years ago when my husband Zach and I started trying for a second child. After multiple losses, we were finally blessed with what we thought was a healthy pregnancy. At 27 weeks + 5 days of gestation, my OBGYN confirmed what I had suspected. I was leaking amniotic fluid, which

measured 1.2 cm and should have been 14.0 cm. I found out I would be spending the remainder of my pregnancy in the hospital. The doctor said it would be best for the baby to be born no earlier than 34 weeks if possible, to allow the lungs to mature. Our first night in the hospital, the neonatal intensive care team came to our room to let us know what to expect with a premature baby. They said delivering this premature, he would be at risk for neurological disorders, PMS 116 palsy, as well PMSas375 cerebral multiple other conditions. They estimated he weighed about 2 lbs. determined to keep our baby boy in until 34 weeks. I stayed on bed rest and they monitored the baby daily. One week had gone by and on February 24th, I woke up and I was bleeding. At this point everything was okay and the baby looked good. As the day went on I started feeling what I thought were contractions and by 6:30 p.m., they were wheeling me into a delivery room. The baby was in distress and expected to be born within 3 hours. I had to make that PMS 298 phone call to PMS dreadful my2577 husband and tell him to come to the hospital now. A Message From the

President & CEO

Our two Ronald McDonald Houses have already welcomed over 700 families this year; the Tooth Truck has helped more than 1,200 children; and there are 650 children brushing their teeth every day as participants in our Brushing Program. None of this would be possible without the thousands of people who have

embraced our mission with generous and caring spirits. Speaking of generous and caring spirits, I’d like to recognize four of our volunteers that were recently recognized for 25 years of dedicated service. All four began their volunteer service at the Ronald McDonald House near Cox South. Gene & Betty Laytham recently retired from their weekly Tuesday shifts and Joan Schroeder continues her work on Tuesdays. Sandy Emberton joined our volunteer force at the Mercy Ronald McDonald House when it opened nearly two years ago. These four amazing people have given 100 years and nearly 14,000 hours of service, ensuring a warm, loving refuge for literally thousands of families. It’s truly been my honor to know and work alongside them over the past 25 years.

Betty and Jean Laytham are shown with their special 25-year volunteer award.

The mission of Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) of the Ozarks is to create, find and support programs that directly improve the health and well being of children in the Ozarks. Our first priority is to provide a “home away from home” for families of seriously ill and injured children receiving treatment in Springfield’s medical facilities. Our first Ronald McDonald House, located near Cox South Hospital, has helped nearly 8,900 families during the past 26 years. Our second House, located on the 6th floor of Mercy Children’s Hospital, has welcomed over 800 families since November 30, 2012. RMHC’s second cornerstone project, the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile®, (fondly known as the “Tooth Truck”), provides dental treatment and prevention education for children that qualify for the free and reduced school lunch program in the Springfield area. The Tooth Truck has helped 16,800 children over the past 12 years through 41,300 dental appointments and treatment valued at nearly $9.7 million. The Tooth Truck’s new Daily Tooth-Brushing Program already has 650 participants at Springfield Public Schools and the Boys & Girls Club of West Plains.

Heart the Houses

by Adopting a Room

With two Ronald McDonald Houses in Springfield (one near Cox South and one in Mercy Children’s Hospital), Ronald McDonald House Charities® of the Ozarks has provided a home-away-from-home for nearly 9,500 families. In caring for their seriously ill or injured child, moms and dads experience one of life’s greatest challenges, and more than ever, they need support. You have the unique opportunity to lead the crusade in helping these families support their child on the path to wellness. Ronald McDonald House Charities cares for more than 800 families each year, and we need your help preparing for 2015. We encourage you to Heart the Houses by Adopting a Room for 2015 in one (or both) of our Ronald McDonald Houses. By Adopting a Room, you are letting these families know that you are

behind them 100% as they battle fear and uncertainty, all the while trying to remain positive for their child, who faces trials no child should. You are directly providing a sanctuary for tired bodies and minds so families can gather strength and continue being the foundation their seriously ill or injured child desperately needs. These families are in need of comfort and hope, and most especially, a home close to their child. Adopting a Room for next year means more to families staying at the Ronald McDonald Houses than you can imagine. Whether you adopt the kitchen to provide a place for nourishment, a living room to allow for relaxation or a bedroom to bring rest, you are placing yourself on the front lines in the battle for our families and their children.

Jasmine’s Pretty Smile Remember the excitement of school picture day, picking out the perfect outfit and hoping you look just right? Imagine you were so embarrassed of your smile that you opted out of picture day, hoping your teeth might look better for a retake later in the year. We recently met a beautiful, 6-year-old girl named Jasmine who was hoping that her bad teeth would either fall out or be fixed so that she could have a “pretty smile” for the spring school pictures. Jasmine came to us with 13 cavities, including several on her front teeth with black areas in between each tooth. Her Mom explained that the family had Medicaid for Jasmine several years ago and had a few cavities fixed but then circumstances caused them to not qualify for Medicaid before all the other cavities could be repaired. During her cleaning and diagnosis appointment, Jasmine asked several times about fixing her front teeth and so we decided that we would start our treatment with that area. After the visit to fix her front teeth, Jasmine left the Tooth Truck overjoyed with the results and couldn’t wait to show her teacher and for the end of the day so that she could show her Mom. The next day, Jasmine and her Mom came to the Tooth Truck

for an after-school appointment and her mother had tears in her eyes as she thanked the staff for giving her daughter back a “pretty smile”. It was then we learned of Jasmine’s wish for her next picture day. In all, Jasmine’s treatment on the Tooth Truck consisted of 8 composite fillings, 3 pulpotomy and crowns on severely decayed primary (baby) molars, and 2 extractions of primary molars that were decayed beyond the point of being repaired. Her treatment took 5 appointments to complete for a treatment value of $3,744. During each appointment, Jasmine learned the importance of brushing and flossing and how she can always have a pretty smile. At the end of

Sertoma All-Star Weekend

Supports Tooth Truck The first weekend in June saw another successful Sertoma AllStar Weekend with the 13th annual GRIN IRON CLASSIC (GIC) and the 3rd annual GRIN ACTION CLASSIC (GAC), held at Parkview High School in Springfield. Presented by generous sponsors, Delta Dental of Missouri and the Heart of the Ozarks Sertoma Club, these events are hosted by the All-Star Smiles Sertoma Club, the SW MO High School Football Coaches Association, and local volleyball coaches. After days and days of rain, the skies cleared for the GRIN IRON CLASSIC, the all-star high school football game for SW MO. Over 80 graduated seniors competed in an East-West competition at JFK Stadium in front of a crowd that neared 4,000 fans. For the second time in 13 years, the East defeated the West, 40-27. The next day on Saturday, June 7, five teams competed during the GRIN ACTION CLASSIC girls’ all-star high school volleyball tournament. The new Springfield team was victorious over the South Longtime President of the All-Star Smiles Sertoma Club, Bill Williams and Ronald McDonald® are ready for another great year at the GRIN IRON CLASSIC!

team in the championship game, after 5 rounds of play. The biggest winners of all are the children of the Tooth Truck. This year’s events raised over $56,000 to help keep our program on the road. Our special thanks go out to the sponsors, players, parents, coaches, fans and volunteers for another great year. See pages 16-18 for a listing of our contributors over the past two years. NICU team worked seamlessly getting me ready to deliver our baby. After a tumultuous delivery, I gave birth to Finnegan Laney White. He weighed 2.6 pounds and was 15 inches long. Finnegan was taken to the NICU and placed on a ventilator. I was able to go see him after 3 hours of recovery. The nurse said I could put my hand through the hole in the incubator and touch him. I’ve never been so scared in my life. He was covered with wires and tubes and there were flashing lights and alarms going off. It was so much to take in. The nurse shared information about staying at the Ronald McDonald House, but unfortunately it was full. I didn’t understand how it worked or what it really was about. I was discharged from the hospital the following morning. I experienced the most unspeakable feeling. Leaving the hospital without your baby is unbearable. No parent should ever feel that pain and emptiness. That was the longest night at home, and I couldn’t wait until the next day to get back to the NICU to be with Finnegan. The next day, a room opened up at the House and I met Alexis, the House Manager. She was so nice and caring. She took me on the tour and I couldn’t believe how incredible this place was. It had a huge kitchen, TVs, a playroom and a laundry room that was out of this world. When we got to the bedrooms, I just couldn’t believe it: Tempur-Pedic beds, mini-fridge, and a private bathroom. It made me feel right at home. In fact it was better because I was able to have 24-hour access to my baby that was only one floor away. That night I stayed at the House and was able to go to the NICU and spend time with Finnegan. From that night on, I knew I could call the Ronald Mc Donald House my new home. Finnegan was only allowed to be touched every 4 hours, so in between his touch times I was able to rest my head on a comfortable bed and reenergize myself. They even provided hospital-grade breast pumps.

Finnegan had a long respiratory stay. I developed inflammation of the fetal membranes due to a bacterial infection from being ruptured for so long, as well as a very severe form of funisitis where the tissue that makes up the umbilical cord starts to die. Because of these severe infections, Finnegan was born with Pneumonia and multiple other lung infections. During his NICU stay, he developed Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia. BPD involves abnormal development of lung tissue. It develops in premature babies with underdeveloped lungs. It also can be caused by trauma, pneumonia, and other lung infections that cause inflammation and scarring. Although he needed mechanical ventilation to survive, over time the pressure and excess oxygen can damage the lungs. In total we spent 80 days in the NICU. That’s 12 weeks. Eight of those weeks I lived at the Ronald McDonald House. I looked forward to every night at 6pm when volunteers from the community would provide dinner at the House. As tired as we all were, having a hot meal to look forward to was great. It gave me the energy to get through the rest of the night. Once Finnegan was stable, I chose to move back home for the remainder of his stay for our other son Sterling, who is 13, and my husband. Having a split household was hard mentally and emotionally. Zach needed his wife, and Sterling needed his mom. I still spent each day at the NICU and went home at night.

Shown left to right are Finnegan’s father, Zach; his brother, Sterling; and mother, Ashley.

On May 10th, Mother’s Day, Finnegan was allowed to finally eat by mouth for the first time. I couldn’t have asked for a better Mother’s Day present. The nurses said not to get too excited; that it would be hard for him to breastfeed and we’d probably be there another month or so. That was not the case with Mr. Finnegan. He took off eating and we were discharged 5 days later. He left the hospital weighing 6 lbs, 10 oz, and now is over 14 lbs. I love going to visit and showing off Finnegan. The staff and the volunteers are so amazing and you can tell they truly love their jobs. Without the Ronald McDonald House, it wouldn’t have been possible for me to have the 24-hour access to my baby. Being with him all the time, I feel it helped him develop and grow into the strong boy he is today.

Finnegan White
