November Birthdays

Family Dinner Wise Family & Friends Bill & Andi Wise

When did you start providing meals at the Ronald McDonald House? We started providing meals with the Family Dinner Program at the Mercy House in March of 2016. How did you get involved with the Family Dinner Program? We have supported the Ronald McDonald House through donations for many years. We became involved with the Family Dinner Program after our son and his wife benefited from the Dinner Program when their sons were in the NICU for several weeks after birth. Do you have any favorite memories? We really enjoyed when our Supper Club was able to help us serve dinner at the House at Mercy Kids.

November 2 Adam Greeno Karen Hill Brandon Taylor What is your favorite thing about participating in the Family Dinner Program? Our favorite part about helping with the Family Dinner Program is the satisfaction of providing comfort food for families who are going through a difficult time in their lives.

What would you like to say to other groups who are considering volunteering with the Family Dinner Program? We would say to get involved! It is a very rewarding experience serving for the families, and you won’t regret it.

We love our RMHC family and we wish you a Happy Thanksgiving!

Volunteer Spotlight Susan Carter

Susan Carter is a retired schoolteacher with a servant heart. Her husband works for a local university and her two children are grown; her daughter is married and her son is currently traveling the world! Susan provides front office assistance at the House near Cox South and has been volunteering since August 2015! We appreciate all you do for RMHC, Susan! What is your favorite thing to do (or a couple things) at the House? I enjoy working in the office and helping out with special events. What do you enjoy doing in your free time? I enjoy spending time with my family. I like to read. Do you volunteer anywhere else in the Springfield community? I have volunteered many times in the past through school and church.

How did you learn about the Ronald McDonald House? I learned about RMH through a presentation at the fundraising event “Taste of Adventure.” Do you have any favorite memories? I checked in a family who had a little girl with the same name as my daughter. We became instant buddies. About three or four weeks later, the family was staying at the House again. The little girl remembered me and was looking for me. She was precious.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering with our organization? I like helping out in any way needed. I love when I have the opportunity to interact with the families. I love this organization and the mission. The love and support they extend to the families of hospitalized children is a wonderful thing.

‘Tis the Season As the holiday season approaches, we pause to think about the many families who will spend this special time of year at our Ronald McDonald Houses instead of being surrounded by the familiarity of their own homes. The joy of brightening their lives or easing their load becomes the magic of the holiday season for so many of our volunteers, donors and supporters. We get to witness the spirit of the season as donors adopt rooms through our Heart the Houses campaign, donate holiday gifts for families, deliver baked goods, provide gift cards, prepare home-cooked meals and more. Because of the generosity of so many in our community, we are able to bless families and bring a little more holiday cheer to their lives this season. To find out more about ways you can provide support to our families this holiday season, contact the Ronald McDonald House Program Director, Staci Jensen, at 417.875.3521 or Staci.Jensen@RMHCozarks.org.

Tooth Talk The Marathon to Confidence By: Emma Davis Recently the Tooth Truck had the pleasure of meeting 8th grader Dorrian at Pipkin Middle School. Dorrian’s mom submitted a Tooth Truck application to the school nurse indicating she had some concerns with his two front teeth. More specifically, she had a fear that her 14-yearold son might never have the confidence to smile again because his two front teeth had been missing for years. She expressed she wanted nothing more than for her son to feel confident in his smile, to feel like he can show the world who he really is, and to be able to express his emotions without fear of judgment or ridicule from his peers. During our recent visit to Pipkin, we met Dorrian and found he was doing a great job of keeping his teeth clean and healthy! He had zero cavities and the Tooth Truck staff was able to provide protective sealants to help keep his smile cavity free. After reviewing his x-rays, it was clear his permanent front teeth were there, but not able to descend on their own. Dorrian’s case would require some specialized care beyond the scope of our services to ensure his teeth would come in correctly. Two special individuals answered the call to make a big difference in Dorrian’s life.

Dorrian’s story spoke strongly to Tooth Truck board members Dr. Chris Meyer of OMS and Dr. Tara Cash of Cash Family Orthodontics. Dr. Meyer offered to expose the teeth so that Dr. Cash can place orthodontic brackets to begin the process of moving the teeth into the correct position—all at no cost to Dorrian’s family. Their generosity will help Dorrian and his mother achieve the dream of watching him smile confidently and show off a new side of himself to his peers, family, and everyone he meets. He will be able to smile with the self-assurance that his two front teeth are front and center, and that his smile reflects the mature young man he is growing into every day. Dr. Cash will continue seeing Dorrian throughout the duration of his orthodontic treatment, which may take years to complete. Often it is said that life is a marathon, not a sprint, or good things come to those who wait. This is just the beginning of Dorrian’s story. He has been waiting for this

Dorrian is ready to embark on a journey to gain confidence in his smile.

opportunity for years, a chance to gain a smile he is proud to display to all he encounters. The Tooth Truck staff is incredibly excited to document his story from start to finish. We feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to connect Dorrian to specialists who can help him embark on this lifechanging journey!

VOLUNTEER TIP OF THE MONTH Fall Reminders 1. Reverse ceiling fans so that hot air that rises to the ceiling is pushed back down. This will help keep heating bills lower. 2. You know to clean the lint trap in your dryer, but don’t forget about the back exhaust pipe! 3. Drain gas from your yard equipment to extend the life of your mower/ weed eater. 4. Wrap up and store your outdoor hoses in a dry, indoor location for the winter. 5. Trim your trees to keep any limbs away from your house or driveway. They can be a hazard if they were to fall during winter weather.

STAFF President & CEO Bonnie Keller Sandy Morris, House volunteer, provides helpful tips for everyday needs. Enjoy this month’s Volunteer Tip!
