Ten years ago, our son Fergus (Gus) nearly drowned.
He was only 11 months old – crawling, eating well, and extremely happy all of the time. Since then, he’s had several surgeries, procedures, and appointments to help us take better care of him. He is not mobile or verbal and is fed through a g-tube. He is a smart 11-year-old that loves action movies, comic superheroes, funny jokes, horseback riding and social activities. The first time we encountered the warm generosity of the Ronald McDonald House of the Ozarks was 10 years ago when Gus’ life drastically changed. Throughout these years, when we have needed a place to stay for Gus’ surgeries and procedures, the comfort of the House has provided a needed security and a place to breathe a little easier. The kind patience of the staff has always impressed us – when our stress level is at a high, our sleep is at a minimum, and our emotions are all over the place, the staff always greets us warmly with a smile, delicious food, and a clean, comfortable place to stay. The home-like atmosphere helped ease a lot of the anxiety for Gus and those of us that care for him. He is our 4th child and dearly loved by his siblings, who were able to come with us. They loved the House—the staff were always thoughtful and made their stay fun and less stressful. Thanks to the Ronald McDonald House, our visits during these hard times, for all of us—the caregivers, the siblings, and especially for Gus, have been the best they could be.
