Family Dinner

Spotlight L to R: Brian, Addison and Julie Gray

February 3 Rich Taylor

Julie Gray & Friends

When did you start providing meals for families at the Ronald McDonald House? The first meal my family provided was on November 2, 2014. How did you get involved with the Family Dinner Program? My seven-year-old daughter was hospitalized for six days following an accident in August 2014. I felt so fortunate to be able to go home each day to take a warm shower and get a few hours of sleep in my own bed when so many other families were from out of town and didn’t have that “luxury.” I also felt lucky to be able to take my daughter home so soon when others have a lot longer stay. This experience made me start thinking of ways my family could give back to other families at Mercy Kids, and the Ronald McDonald House came to mind. I looked at the website to learn about different types of volunteer opportunities and decided that the Family Dinner Program was a good fit for my family. What is your favorite thing about participating in the Family Dinner Program? One of my favorite things about the Family Dinner Program is the gratitude of the families and the RMH staff. It’s great knowing that providing a meal for a family of a sick child helps take away at least one worry for them. The staff assures us any meal brought in will be eaten, even if it’s not at the exact time we are there serving. Even though there is a set “dinner time,” anyone who has spent time in a hospital knows there is not a “set schedule” for many things! Do you have any favorite memories? On the first night we served, we met a family who had never

been in a hospital and had never rode in anything except a horse and buggy. They told us how they had to be rushed to the hospital by ambulance to deliver their 11th child. This had been quite an experience for them as all other 10 children had been born at home. We served Mexican food that night and I wondered if they had ever eaten Mexican food, so I asked. His reply was, “Riding in an ambulance, being in a hospital, and now eating Mexican food; it’s been quite a bit of excitement the past few days...but it tastes good!” Before we left that evening, the gentleman thanked us again and asked about why we were providing the meal. I told him about my daughter’s accident and how spending time in the hospital made us think of ways we could give back. He said he too hoped to do the same thing one day, as he was very appreciative of the help provided to his family from someone he didn’t know. What would you like to say to other groups who are considering volunteering with the Family Dinner Program? If you are considering participating in the Family Dinner Program, I would encourage you to think of ways to incorporate your everyday lives into making the commitment. Instead of going out to dinner with a group of friends, ask your friends to help you provide dinner for others at RMH. Ask your co-workers to help you as a way to get to know one another and their families outside of work. Ask your children to help be a part of this too! My daughter has loved being a part of it all. From shopping and preparing to cooking and serving, it’s a great way to learn how to give back to the community in which we live and work! I can promise you will leave with a sense of pride and a lot of gratitude!

Around the Houses During cold and flu season, it’s especially important that Springfield’s two Ronald McDonald Houses are doing everything possible to keep germs at bay. As you can imagine, that means our staff and volunteers run through a supply of Clorox wipes pretty quickly. We recently reached out to Convoy of Hope in search of Clorox wipes, and they came through in typical Convoy of Hope fashion! After speaking with their Fulfillment Director, Jeff, we were informed we could expect a pallet load of Clorox wipes—imagine our shock at what a pallet load amounted to! Pictured to the right is the fantastic donation we received from Convoy of Hope…more than 400 containers of Clorox wipes! We’d like to extend a very special thank you to Convoy of Hope for helping us keep our families healthy and Houses germ free! Dana Ingle (Thirty-One representative) and her two kids, Lola and Nicklaus, assembled 38 care bags and donated them to the Houses! What a wonderful “welcome” gift for our families to receive. Thank you for the wonderful blessing!

Thirty-One partners with Ronald McDonald Houses all over the US to provide special “welcome bags” for all of our families and children. Many Houses, including ours, fill these bags with comfort items for families to enjoy during their stay(s) at the Houses. We were blessed to receive a donation again this year! Thank you for your continued support, Thirty-One!

Our Volunteers ROCK! “Volunteers are the only human beings on the face of the earth who reflect this nation’s compassion, unselfish caring, patience, and just plain love for one another.” – Erma Bombeck We may be a little biased, but volunteers with Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Ozarks are the BEST…and we have the stats to prove it! Nearly 170 volunteers helped provide a “home away from home” for 888 families at our TWO Houses this year and helped instill healthy brushing habits in 1,871 kids on the Tooth Truck! Very soon, we will serve our 10,000th family at the Houses, and the Tooth Truck has provided more than 10 million dollars worth of dental treatment to kids since 2002. Volunteers contributed 8,120 hours of service at BOTH Ronald McDonald Houses in 2014. 837 hours of service were provided by Tooth Truck volunteers, and 2,446 hours of service were provided by volunteers at RMHC EVENTS. That’s a grand total of 11,403 hours of volunteer service valued at $257,138 in 2014! Thank you for your continued commitment to the mission of RMHC of the Ozarks!

Volunteer Spotlight Jan Ricketts Jan has volunteered at our House near Cox South for 20 years! Let’s learn a little bit more about Jan…

Do you volunteer anywhere else in the Springfield community? I volunteer at People Helping People in Republic.

“Several of my friends ask why I volunteer so much. I have the same answer – I feel that I get so much more back than I could ever give. I feel that at the end of my shift that day, maybe, just maybe, in some small way, I have helped them have a better day.”

How did you learn about the Ronald McDonald House? My daughter told me about it! She is a nurse at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. They have one there. She thought I should get involved here in Springfield.

Ronald McDonald House of the Ozarks

Do you have any favorite memories? There are so many! My two favorite families were from Romania and Harrison, Arkansas. Both had children with cancer. The children survived and are healthy! There was a mother and daughter that survived Hurricane Katrina. They packed up what they had left, got in their car, and headed to Missouri. They ended up having to stay at the Ronald McDonald House for quite some time.

December 2014

What is your favorite thing to do at the House? I like visiting with the families and cleaning and organizing the kitchen. What do you enjoy in your free time? I enjoy spending time with my children and grandchildren and taking trips to the beach in Alabama and Florida. What do you enjoy outside of volunteering? I love going to church and shopping at Marshalls!

Tooth Talk

A Reflection on 2014 Written By Dr. Sarah Cimino Four years - it’s a measurement of time that I can fondly say has marked many a milestone in my life to date… I was at Glendale High School for 4 years, Millikin University for 4 years, the University of Missouri Kansas City School of Dentistry for 4 years, and now, with the passing of another February 1st, I can say that I’ve been with the Tooth Truck for 4 years! The only difference is that with the first three institutes I graduated at the end of my 4 years and moved on, but I have no end in sight when it comes to my tenure here. As it has become tradition, I’d like to take this opportunity to share with you some of my highlights of the past year aboard the Tooth Truck. I am constantly amazed and proud of the dental community in Springfield and their unwavering support of the Tooth Truck and its mission. Last year, we partnered with local periodontist, Dr. Leo Tokarczyk, to assist a patient whose needs extended beyond the scope of the Tooth Truck. This year, we were again fortunate to have a local dentist step up when we encountered a child in need of the services of a specialist. Dr. Lisa Castleman worked with us to provide a root canal on a permanent molar for a teenage patient that otherwise would have resulted in a tooth extraction. The Springfield dental community helped bring the Tooth Truck to fruition many years ago, and it is amazing to see that their support continues today. The community support this year has extended far beyond the dental community as various groups have donated their time to raise funds and collect both dental care items and prizes for our patients to receive after their visits. One such group that stepped outside of the box to contribute to the Tooth Truck is the Creekside at Elfindale seniors. They took our plain white hygiene bags that we put each child’s dental supplies in after their initial cleaning appointment, and transformed them into festive celebrations of the passing seasons with encouraging messages about oral hygiene on one side and a cute picture on the other. Our little patients have delighted in picking out which bag they were going to receive, and each month, our staff looks forward to seeing what creations will arrive with the next batch of bags.

Dr. Sarah and Reed Middle School student, Dayton, get ready to begin an appointment. Dayton enjoyed wearing the headphones and listening to a movie during his visits.

Staff and residents from Creekside at Elfindale dropped off a delivery of festive bags for our patients to take their dental supplies home in.

This fall, I encountered two special patients that truly lit up any room they entered and brought a smile to all of our faces each time they were on the Tooth Truck. Dayton was a student at Reed Middle School whose super power was his heightened sense of touch, taste, smell and hearing due to his blindness. He was full of wonderful questions and truly taught us to “see” the dental experience through our other senses as he was attuned to all of the vibrations, tastes, smells and sounds that our instruments and procedures had to offer. While at Pipkin, we had the delight of meeting Krupa, who has Down Syndrome and had a very limited vocabulary of English words because she had just immigrated here from India only 2 weeks prior! We were so impressed with her ability to navigate both her school and the dental environment. We loved the fact that she insisted on taking off her shoes before sitting in the dental chair and that she gave out hugs at the end of each appointment.

On the Tooth Truck, we strive to connect with each patient - often times it centers around a character on their clothing or backpack or a recent movie they have seen. As my own daughter has grown (she will be turning 3 this spring), so has my knowledge of popular children’s movies and characters. I can now proudly rattle off the characters from “My Little Pony” like a pro, and if you can stand to hear me sing, I can belt each lyric of the entire “Frozen” soundtrack. I am, though, still a little rusty on the more masculine characters, such as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Avengers, so I look forward to honing in on those as I take on the challenge of raising a little boy who is due to join my family this summer. This year, we introduced an additional mode of reinforcing positive behavior and boosting a child’s selfesteem in the form of special certificates. A child gets presented a certificate after an exceptionally good

appointment. Most of us can remember the feeling of receiving a special “Happy Gram” from a teacher at school, and the pride of pulling it out of our backpack at home to show our family. We are delighted to be able to add this to our program, and the excitement on the children’s faces when we explain what it is and why they are receiving it makes us feel like a proud kid again. I will leave you with one of my absolute favorite things to do on the Tooth Truck - fixing broken and chipped front teeth. I myself chipped one of my Dr. Sarah and dental assistant Kim present a patient with a certificate of teeth when I was in middle school (the car door jumped out of nowhere excellent behavior after he selected his and hit me in the face), and I can vividly recall the embarrassment of big prize for being cavity-free. sitting in class the next day as I hid my mouth with my hand in the hopes that nobody would notice the small chip (but huge in my eyes). Most of the children we see with chipped front teeth have been dealing with their broken tooth for months and sometimes even years. A few have even had the tooth repaired previously, only to knock the filling off and be told by their parents that they can’t afford to have it fixed again. After each appointment that we are able to restore a front tooth to its prior glory, the excitement of the child to go show it off can barely be contained long enough for us to complete their paperwork and have them pick out a prize. My favorite memories are of those children running ahead of me into their school and proudly showing off their new smile to, literally, every person we pass in the halls. We have had teachers brought to tears after seeing the child’s new tooth and, more importantly, their new self-confidence. At Sunshine Elementary, I stood on the steps of the Tooth Truck during after school pick-up and watched as Alexander ran to his car to show his Mom his new front tooth. I then beamed as she grabbed his face in her hands to get a better look at his tooth, glanced at the Tooth Truck and saw me standing on the steps, came around the front of the car and shouted across the parking lot, “Thank you so much, we can never repay you for what you have done for him - it’s beautiful!” Thank you to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Ozarks and to all of you as supporters for allowing me to do what I love for four wonderful years - here’s to many, many, many more!
