2016 All-Star Weekend The 15th Annual Sertoma GRIN IRON CLASSIC proved to be one of the best games yet as the West team defeated the East 16-15 in the all-star football matchup on June 3rd. The next day, the Southwest Missouri volleyball all-stars battled in a round-robin tournament and concluded in a championship game between the South and East with South taking the title in the 5th Annual Sertoma GRIN ACTION CLASSIC. This All-Star Weekend was presented by Heart of the Ozarks Sertoma Club and Delta Dental of Missouri, and hosted by RMHC of the Ozarks, the SW MO Football Coaches Association and the All Star Smiles Sertoma Club, benefiting the Tooth Truck, our Ronald McDonald Care Mobile®! We had fantastic sponsorship support from the Greater Springfield Dental Society, O’Reilly Auto Parts, and Westrock Orthodontics; along with in-kind support from McDonald’s, Mercy Sports Medicine, Price Cutter, McCann Printing and Mediacom. Sara Wilken!
We would like to welcome our newest Assistant Manager, Sara Wilken, to our team! She is from Republic and will be attending Missouri State University this fall to study Elementary or Special education. Sara began volunteering at the Cox House about two years ago with some friends from high school and enjoyed it so much she decided to take the next step as a member of our staff! Her favorite hobby is running; she started running Cross Country and Track in middle school and continued throughout high school. Her goal is to run a marathon one day! One of the reasons she wanted to be an Assistant Manager was because of the volunteers. She said, “The Volunteers here are so friendly and I found a love for helping people in the community. It is a great place to volunteer and it is for a great cause.� We are thrilled to welcome you to our team as an Assistant Manager, Sarah!

Volunteer Spotlight Catelynn Classick Catelynn Classick started volunteering at the House at Mercy Kids in February of this year. She is currently a student at Missouri State University majoring in cellular and molecular biology, and has plans to go to dental school upon graduation. She is an ambitious young lady and we’ve truly enjoyed getting to know her. Let’s learn more about Catelynn!
How did you hear about the Ronald McDonald House? In high school, I was involved in several clubs and societies that allowed me to explore numerous volunteer organizations. Upon entering college, I was required to volunteer at least 120 hours for my scholarship. I remembered how much fun it was volunteering through high school and knew I was called to the Ronald McDonald House. What is your favorite part about volunteering? My favorite part about volunteering is being able
to interact with the families staying at the House. Hearing their stories and seeing the way the family members encourage one another makes me smile. Knowing the little bit of cleaning and organizing that I do each week benefits the kind people who stay here makes the job worth it! What are your hobbies while not volunteering for the Ronald McDonald House? I love to play golf! It is such a relaxing sport (when I’m playing well) and allows me to enjoy the outdoors. I also enjoy hanging out with family and friends. I am involved in church and even teach a Sunday school class. I like to stay busy. What would you like to share with others thinking about being an RMH volunteer? I would tell anyone thinking about being a RMH volunteer to sign up immediately. The staff is always happy to work with busy schedules and tailor

We thought it would be fun to feature the Healthy Smiles Academy and Program Manager Tamara Maddox in an interviewstyle conversation. Tamara wants to share all the interesting and valuable information about this amazing program! The Healthy Smiles Academy just wrapped up a successful school year with 1,539 participants at 14 schools and 6 community programs. Enjoy part one of a two-part series getting to know Tamara and the Healthy Smiles Academy.
Can you tell our readers what exactly is the Healthy Smiles Academy? The Healthy Smiles Academy is a daily brushing program for students in the classroom setting. Our focus is on preschool and kindergarten classrooms at schools with a high percentage of free and reduced lunch. We started the program in Springfield schools in 2011 and have been expanding into neighboring districts and other community programs. The Healthy Smiles Academy teaches students how to take care of their teeth by brushing daily in their classrooms.

How is the Healthy Smiles Academy connected to the Tooth Truck? The Healthy Smiles Academy is an extension of the Tooth Truck. There was a strong desire to do more to establish proper oral hygiene habits at a young age so children would experience fewer cavities as they grow up. We first started in a local Early Childhood Center and quickly saw how successful the program could be. In 2014, we received a grant through Missouri Foundation for Health to underwrite funding for the next three years, allowing us to grow exponentially. How does the brushing program work? Can you explain what the teacher’s role is in terms of having his/her class brush daily? I start by meeting with school staff to share details about the program. Once I am able to explain how the program works to staff and they commit to the program, then we set a launch date. On launch day, I start with a presentation on why brushing is important and how to properly brush. For the first couple of days, our Healthy Smiles Academy volunteers and I work with the children a few at a time teaching them about proper brushing and encouraging them
along the way. We return to the site for up to a week to make sure they are getting the hang of their brushing routine. The teachers we work with are truly the glue that holds this program together. The teachers implement the daily brushing after the initial launch is completed, and I provide oversight throughout the year. We know how much of an impact these teachers have on their students’ lives, and we appreciate everything our Healthy Smiles Academy teachers do to keep this program running in their classrooms! Wow! That’s great! What are your plans for next year? We have a lot of exciting launches planned for next year. We are scheduled to implement the program in classrooms in Willard and Ozark schools this fall, and we have some new community partners signed up as well. Our goal is to grow the program by 800 new students each school year, and we have several new sites joining the program with the start of the school year in the fall. Welcome, New Volunteers The Tooth Truck is thrilled to welcome Catelynn Classick to its volunteer family! Catelynn is a pre-dental student at MSU and is excited to boost kids’ inner confidence while helping them learn how to care for their smiles. When she’s not busy at school or volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House and on the Tooth Truck, Catelynn is hard at work at Arc of the Ozarks. Her passion for giving back to her community is inspiring. A fun fact about Catelynn is she has an identical twin! Welcome aboard, Catelynn! We’re happy you’re with us! Monica Quinn is the newest volunteer to join the Tooth Truck! She is a pre-med student at Drury University, entering her sophomore year. Monica has been familiar with the Tooth Truck for several years but only recently has had the flexibility in her schedule to get involved. Monica is also volunteering at both Ronald McDonald Houses! When she’s not volunteering, she spends her time shadowing at various medical offices and is enjoying her orthopedic surgery shadowing experience. This girl is constantly on the go, but is anxious to give her time to the kiddos of the Tooth Truck. We couldn’t be more excited to welcome her to our team!

Banana Chocolate Chip Mini-Muffins ½ C packed brown sugar 1 C vanilla yogurt 1 ¼ C flour ½ C milk ½ tsp baking soda ½ C uncooked quick oats 2 tsp baking powder ½ tsp vanilla Enjoy wonderful recipes provided ½ tsp salt 1 egg, beaten by Mrs. Vivian Carissimo, also ½ C mini choc chips 1 banana known as Mrs. C. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Combine yogurt, milk, oats, vanilla, egg, and banana. Let set for five minutes. In separate bowl, stir brown sugar, flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Stir flour mixture into yogurt mixture. Add chocolate chips. Spoon a heaping teaspoon into mini-muffin tins. Bake 12-14 minutes.
