Price Cutter Charity Championship The Web.com Tour’s Price Cutter Charity Championship presented by Dr Pepper will be held August 11th - 14th at Highland Springs Country Club. The Ronald McDonald House has been a beneficiary since the inception of this event in 1990, providing over $1,100,000 in support to our organization alone. More than half of the annual funding we receive through this event is from TLC Properties’ CHARITY SWEEPSTAKES TICKETS. The program features 500 prizes valued at $25 each, giving each Sweepstakes ticketholder a 1 in 16 chance to win a prize. In addition, every ticketholder also has a 1 in 8,000 chance to win a 2016 Ford® F-150 Pickup Truck or $10,000 cash prize. Sweepstakes tickets are available NOW for $25 each. One-hundred-percent of your purchase will benefit the children and families of our two Ronald McDonald Houses if you designate the Houses as your preferred charity. The Sweepstakes Ticket also serves as a grounds season pass for the tournament, August 11th-14th. Contact Kim Booth at 417-875-3505 or Kim.Booth@RMHCozarks.org to purchase your tickets TODAY and spread the word! They will make a fantastic FATHER’S DAY GIFT! For your convenience, we have included a flyer for ticket purchases in this newsletter. Be sure to check out our next issue of Heart Beats for details about the Ronald McDonald House Community Nights, August 5th - 7th at Ashley HomeStore, featuring a special offer related to our Sweepstakes Tickets!

Summer Volunteer Schedules Summer months bring several changes to our volunteer schedules at the Houses, and we need your help to ensure we have enough volunteer support for our families and children. We have several open shifts at the Houses that need adopted. The list to the right is in order of priority for each House. If you are interested in volunteering at the House at Mercy Kids, contact Ely Wright at Ely.Wright@RMHCozarks.org or for the House near Cox South, contact Alicia Doran at Alicia.Doran@RMHCozarks.org.

Family Dinner

June Birthdays June 2 Trish Musick

Jennie Crabb and Arc of the Ozarks

When did you start providing meals at the Ronald McDonald House? We started providing meals at the House in April of this year. We enjoyed serving so much we are already signed up to serve again in June! How did you get involved with the Family Dinner Program? I have been a House volunteer since 2015. I really enjoy cooking and I wanted to serve a meal for families staying at the House with my friends from the Arc of the Ozarks. What is your favorite thing about participating in the Family Dinner Program? My favorite part about helping with the Family Dinner Program is being able to cook a meal with my friends. I also really enjoy being able to help families staying at the House have a great meal!

What would you like to say to other groups who are considering volunteering with the Family Dinner Program? I would say that the Ronald McDonald Houses have families who need and benefit from the Family Dinner Program. It is a lot of fun serving for the families, and I would encourage you to get involved!

Do you have any favorite memories? I really enjoy volunteering at the House and making sure the House looks great for the families staying. When we served dinner, I enjoyed meeting the families and seeing how much they enjoyed the meal we cooked.

Around the Houses Collecting Books for RMH Wyatt Carrell, a fourth grade student at Phelps Center for Gifted Education, collected two large boxes of books for the Ronald McDonald House as part of a school service project. With the help of his father, his teacher Erica Hankison and the school librarian Tim Mills, Wyatt chose to support families and children staying at our Houses through his book donation. We are so proud of you, Wyatt, and all those who donated! Thank you for your kindess!

Give Ozarks 2016 We’d like to extend an extra special thank you to everyone who participated in our GiveOzarks fund -an awareness-raising campaign for the Healthy Smiles Academy in-school toothbrushing program -- through the Community Foundation of the Ozarks’ 24-hour online giving campaign. To kick off our GiveOzarks efforts this year, the Ferrell-Duncan Clinic Foundation generously contributed $1,000 to underwrite 25 students’ participation in the Healthy Smiles Academy for a full year! The Ferrell-Duncan Clinic Foundation was created over twenty years ago by the Clinic’s physicians with the goal to promote and advance healthcare technology, provide healthcare education and offer essential healthcare services to our community. We loved seeing all of the toothbrushing selfies, and thanks to your efforts, we will be able to teach 78 children the importance of dental hygiene and healthy habits.

Volunteer Spotlight Mikel Dashtipour Mikel Dashtipour has been volunteering at the House near Cox South since last winter. His positive attitude is contagious, and he is a true joy to have in the House. He recently received his first hourly award for volunteering over 25 hours. Between juggling work and school, Mikel has been faithfully coming in to help us on Fridays. We are thankful to have his help with maintenance items, but he is always more than willing to do whatever needs to be done! Let’s learn a little more about Mikel.

What is your favorite thing to do at the House? Even though it stinks when things break, I like helping with maintenance and repairs. I enjoy contributing to the House by fixing anything I can. What do you enjoy in your free time? When I’m not in school or at work, I like to ride bikes with my family. If it is not raining

or snowing, we are always outside doing whatever sounds fun! We like to play lots of basketball too! Extra curricular activities: I work in the Pathology lab and am currently completing some extra courses to better my application to PA school. Do you volunteer anywhere else in the Springfield community? Our family almost always volunteers for Oak Grove neighborhood cleanups and also participate in several 5k walks/runs in town. How did you learn about the Ronald McDonald House? I have worked at Cox South for over 10 years and always wanted to check it out. Do you have any favorite memories? I was able to join the

Ronald McDonald Houses of the Ozarks families for dinner one night. We all sat around telling stories while enjoying the Indian food that was prepared. It was amazing! What do you enjoy most about volunteering with our organization? I enjoy helping out in our community and everyone here is just AWESOME! I have told several classmates that if they want to volunteer, this is the place to do it!

I’d like you to take a trip down memory lane back to your senior year of high school. Do you remember the excitement, anticipation, and nervousness of those final weeks before you headed on to your next adventure? Do you have pictures chronicling those moments showing you and your friends smiling brightly? Okay, now I’m going to tell you the story of one of our recent patients who was just weeks from graduation and just days from her senior prom when we had the pleasure to see her on the Tooth Truck. When we met Bethany at Glendale High School, she was a vivacious senior who was looking forward to her upcoming graduation and her senior prom that was just two days away. The school nurse had requested that we see her first thing in the morning so as not to interfere with the OTC courses that she was taking later in the morning. The nurse also mentioned that Bethany had a broken front tooth that she knew was causing her some embarrassment. Now those of you who are loyal readers of our Heart Beats articles know that fixing front teeth is one of my favorite things to do. I love what an immediate impact it makes not only

on a child’s oral health, but on their self-confidence and how they interact with their family, friends, classmates and teachers. So of course I was excited that I might be able to help a young lady that was about to embark on several new events in her life and improve her self-esteem. Bethany came to her cleaning appointment eager to get her teeth cleaned. She showed us her broken front tooth and let us know that it had been broken since she was 7 years old. That meant that she had endured a broken front tooth for the past 10 years. Over that time, the tooth had gotten a cavity since the softer inside of the tooth was constantly being exposed, and it had also become quite sensitive. Her family fell in that alltoo-common gray area of not qualifying for federal assistance (Medicaid) for dental care but also not being able to afford private dental insurance or

the fees to have it fixed out of pocket. And so Bethany had simply become accustomed to a closed-mouthed smile and to keeping food from touching that tooth when she ate. Knowing that she had so many exciting events coming up, we asked Bethany after her cleaning appointment if she would like to stay on the Tooth Truck a little longer that morning and have us fix her front tooth right then. Her eyes and face immediately lit up and a verbal yes was merely a formality. Her expression made it apparent that she had been hoping we would say those very words ever since she found out the Tooth Truck was coming to her school weeks before. We removed the cavity from the tooth and placed a composite (tooth colored) filling to repair the broken portion. It was also apparent that the neighboring tooth

had some rough edges so we smoothed them so that the two front teeth would appear as similar to each other as possible. The moment of truth came and we handed Bethany a mirror so she could see what she had waited nearly 10 years to see – the reflection of a beautiful and confident young lady. Again, a verbal acknowledgement of her pleasure with the result wasn’t needed as her face said it all.

She immediately turned to me and embraced me in a hug as tears of happiness fell from her eyes and my own. When Bethany returned the next week to have the rest of her treatment completed, she brought pictures of her senior prom – her new smile shining for all to see in each and every photo. The total value of treatment provided to Bethany on the Tooth Truck

was $2,814 over the course of 4 appointments. Can you imagine going through your own senior prom and graduation with a broken front tooth? A memory tainted by a hidden smile that never truly expressed the excitement of the moment? Thanks to your support of the Tooth Truck, Bethany didn’t have to experience that either.

Welcome to the Tooth Truck, Josh Wilhelm! The Tooth Truck is excited to welcome new volunteer, Josh Wilhelm! Josh is an MSU graduate currently pursuing a future in the dental field. While he applies and waits for his acceptance to dental school, he is busy with work, but he also has a passion for volunteering. Josh gives his time to multiple local organizations dedicated to helping the youth of Springfield. We are so thrilled to have his giving spirit on the Tooth Truck. Welcome aboard, Josh!
