RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE AT MERCY CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL

Volunteer Spotlight Kim Clift

Kim Clift started volunteering at the House at Mercy Children’s Hospital in December 2015, and is a wonderful addition to our volunteer team! You can find Kim in the House on Monday afternoons, offering a warm smile and greeting to all of our families and volunteers. How did you hear about the Ronald McDonald House? My boss, David Potter, has served on the board for Ronald McDonald House in the past, and I have known several families who have stayed at the House. I have had an opportunity to work with the organization in a

professional capacity for many years and decided it was time to start volunteering! What is your favorite part about volunteering? I enjoy the interaction with the families and the children. I also love serving in any area I am needed. What are your hobbies while not volunteering for the Ronald McDonald House? I love spending time with my children and grandchildren. I also serve on the worship team at my church, enjoy working out, and going on mission trips and vacations.

Ronald McDonald Houses of the Ozarks What would you like to share with others thinking about being a volunteer? There are many needs and ways to serve. The staff is so caring and great to work with. It is good to give back to others when you have been blessed!

National Volunteer Week: April 10-16

We invite our House volunteers to “Bring a Friend” on your regular volunteer shift during National Volunteer Week, April 10 – 16. This is a week set aside to celebrate individuals who get involved in the community and donate their time and resources to make the world a better place. Our volunteers are the best advocates for our volunteer program, and we encourage you to introduce a friend or colleague to RMHC. Be sure to let Ely and Alicia know if you have a friend you’d like to bring to your shift that week!

Tooth Talk

Out with the Lamb and in with the Lion By: Emma Davis

Recently, the Tooth Truck had the pleasure of meeting a remarkable young man with a wonderful story. Brandon first came to the Tooth Truck with a toothache. With his dad by his side, Brandon appeared prepared to undergo any treatment necessary to ease his pain. He described his toothache to one of the Tooth Truck’s dental assistants as “1,000 bee stings.” It was clear he was in some serious pain, and something needed to be done quickly to address it. Brandon’s first appointment on the Tooth Truck did not go as smoothly as expected. We quickly noticed he had a tremendous fear of needles, and was not agreeable to receiving the anesthetic he needed to comfortably wiggle out the tooth that was causing him so much pain. His dad tried everything to encourage him to face his fear and let Dr. Sarah help ease his discomfort. Dr. Sarah did her best to explain how the overall benefits of a ten-second, tiny pinch would far outweigh the pain that he described as “1,000 bee stings.” To no avail, Brandon would not allow the procedure to take place. The Tooth Truck staff arranged to work with Brandon again a few days later when they were scheduled to be at his school. This time, Dr. Sarah used the “Tell, Show, Do” method with Brandon. He underwent his initial cleaning appointment with no difficulty. The next step was finding a rock-star patient of a similar age who would allow Brandon to watch while Dr. Sarah administered the sleepy medicine to put the tooth to sleep. Raary was the perfect patient to help Brandon! Raary had no trouble letting Brandon observe that part of his dental treatment, and loved

helping his fellow student see that there was nothing to be scared of. Brandon had all the support in the world at this point. His dad had been talking to him at home about the importance of being brave and overcoming fears in life; his school nurse encouraged him to let the Tooth Truck help relieve his pain; Raary set a perfect example of how easy it would be to have your tooth put to sleep; and Dr. Sarah showed Brandon everything she was going to do before she did it. In the end, Brandon was able to set his anxiety aside. He received the injection of anesthetic with no difficulty, and Dr. Sarah was able to remove the sick tooth causing him so much pain. The smile on Brandon’s face clearly showed this was a life changing moment. He had overcome his fear, felt 1,000 times better and couldn’t wait to tell everyone in school what a rock-star patient he was on the Tooth Truck.

Top right: Raary was an excellent patient and role model when Brandon needed reassurance over his own dental fears. Bottom right: Dr. Sarah and the Tooth Truck staff are so proud of both Brandon and Raary and their cavity-free smiles. Left: Brandon was all smiles after successfully completing his appointment on the Tooth Truck.

Brandon visited the Tooth Truck two more times to repair three other cavities with white fillings. Brandon’s final words to Dr. Sarah and the Tooth Truck staff were “That was pretty silly of me. There was really nothing to be scared of at all.” One of the many missions of the Tooth Truck is to help boost kids’ self-esteem. Brandon left the appointment that day feeling better about himself than he had in a long time, and it showed in his smile. Brandon may have stepped onto the Tooth Truck a timid lamb, but he left a courageous lion. Thanks to the supportive people in his life, Brandon now has the tools he needs to take on other challenges in the future. He knows he can do anything he sets his mind to, and there is nothing to fear. Most importantly, he will do it all with a healthy smile!

Welcome New Volunteer,

Stephanie

The Tooth Truck is excited to introduce its newest volunteer, Stephanie Miller-Greer. Stephanie is currently a pre-dental student at MSU and, as a former dental assistant, knows just how important the work of the Tooth Truck is to our community. In her spare time, Stephanie enjoys drawing, listening to music, and enjoying the company of her husband Michael. Stephanie’s immediate goals are to “finish dental school, see new places, and enjoy life!” The Tooth Truck is thrilled to welcome Stephanie to its volunteer family!
