Springfield Catholic When did you start providing meals for families at the Ronald McDonald House? We have been volunteering with the Ronald McDonald House for a little over a year. How did you get involved with the Family Dinner Program? A group of moms from Springfield Catholic High School wanted to get together and volunteer. We all enjoy cooking and felt the Ronald McDonald House would be a great way to spend time with friends and help others at the same time. What is your favorite thing about participating in the Family Dinner Program? Being able to help others in our community.

What would you like to say to other groups who are considering volunteering with the Family Dinner Program? Just do it! It is very rewarding. If committing once a month seems too much, get creative with the structure of your group. We have three members of our group who volunteer each month. Someone is in charge of the main dish, someone prepares a side, and the other brings dessert. Then we rotate so we get to volunteer with everyone in our group at some point during the year. By rotating, some of us are “on” during the month and some of us are “off,” but the Ronald McDonald House always has a meal the second Tuesday of each month from Springfield Catholic!
Lovin’ #forRMHC
McDonald’s new Lovin’ #forRMHC Campaign kicked off on May 1st and will run through May 10th as our 63 area McDonald’s restaurants show the love for RMHC of the Ozarks. Employees will be asking customers to purchase $1, $3 or $5 paper hearts to show their support for Ronald McDonald House Charities, as well as encouraging online and text donations for their store’s campaign. Each restaurant has their own crowdfunding campaign with unique text keyword and online giving site, so be sure to stop by your favorite McDonald’s to find out their special code and purchase a heart to support RMHC.

Around the Houses 10,000
Families Served! In March, the House program reached a milestone as we welcomed our 10,000th family at the Houses! That’s 10,000 families who were able to stay close to their children and provide care while they were in the hospital; 10,000 families who were able to receive all the comforts of home during a difficult time; and 10,000 families who were able to heal together- All made possible by the selfless acts of volunteers, donors and generous supporters of our Ronald McDonald Houses! We recently received a beautiful thank you note from a family who found a “home away from home” at our House near Cox South and wanted to share their words with you: Being able to stay at the Ronald McDonald House has been a huge blessing to our family. This experience has allowed my husband to be able to continue working and still be an active participant in the care and feedings for our daughter, Kiyah. Staying at the House has allowed my husband to be more involved due to less travel time to and from work. I stay at the Ronald McDonald House throughout the day between feedings and it has allowed me time to rest and allow my blood pressure to stay regulated since it is less stress for me. The blessing of having a shuttle and being close to the hospital has helped relieve so much stress since I am still unable to drive. We have been continuously blessed by the prayers, gifts and positive thoughts that are shared with us daily. Kiyah continues to grow and make progress and I believe it is because we are able to spend time together as a family thanks to the Ronald McDonald House. Thank you is not enough for everything the House has provided for us. Callie Maher & Family
Share a Heart
The 22nd Annual Share a Heart Campaign numbers are in, and we are very pleased to announce another amazing year! With $109,707 worth of hearts adopted, and $28,500 in generosity from our sponsors, we are once again impressed with the dedication of our supporters. These generous gifts aren’t possible without the support of our community, and we thank you for sharing your hearts and helping us further the mission of the Ronald McDonald Houses. Our reigning “Share a Heart” Champion also keeps his title with an impressive $11,447 raised by TJ Slocum. TJ is a committed volunteer, and with the help of his parents, Randy and Debbie, continues to show his enthusiasm by selling more hearts than anyone each year. Since 2008, TJ has raised $57,811 for the Ronald McDonald Houses of the Ozarks, and we are very grateful for his dedication.
RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE NEAR COX
Volunteer Spotlight Kate Fletcher Let’s learn a little bit more about House near Cox South volunteer, Kate Fletcher…
How did you learn about the Ronald McDonald House? Whenever I was considering joining a sorority, I checked into all of their philanthropies. I wasn’t 100% sure which sorority I wanted to be a part of, but I knew that I definitely wanted to become the Philanthropy Chair in the future. During recruitment I asked a lot of questions about the Ronald McDonald House and once I was officially a member, I decided I wanted to be more involved. I chose the local Ronald McDonald House (Cox location) for my Social Work Service Learning class last fall and was also elected Community Service Chair in my sorority. Those opportunities really sparked my interest in the organization. Spending time with the staff, volunteers and families help me learn and see with my own eyes how incredible the organization is and how much it is needed.
What is your favorite part about volunteering? My favorite thing to do at the House is to help with creative projects. Anything art-related has always been a passion of mine and I enjoy contributing to the “home away from home” atmosphere. I enjoy making welcome cards, door signs, bulletin boards, etc. Other things I enjoy doing are mailings and just anything else that needs attention right away! What do you enjoy in your free time? I enjoy volunteering, working on philanthropy projects, spending time with my family and friends/sorority sisters, traveling, watching movies and creating art projects! What are your extra curricular activities? I am the Philanthropy Chair for Alpha Delta Pi at Missouri State University and also a member of the Social Work Club on campus. As philanthropy chair I get to plan fundraising events and organize community
Ronald McDonald House of the Ozarks service opportunities to benefit the House. The social work club allows me to stay up-todate with the latest topics in our community and volunteer at events with other students in the same field as me. These extracurricular activities are a huge part of my life and I could not be happier with the way they have shaped me! Do you volunteer anywhere else in the Springfield community? Yes, I also volunteer regularly at Harmony House and have helped out in the Advocacy Office and The Kitchen. Other places that I enjoy volunteering at from time to time are Convoy of Hope and Boys and Girls Club in Springfield.
Staff Stuff
Welcome to the House, Bailey! Bailey Ghan is our newest Assistant Manager at the Mercy House and is currently a sophomore at Evangel University. She will be transferring to Missouri State University in the fall as she pursues a degree in Criminal Justice. Eventually, she would like to work somewhere within the prison system, either as a corrections officer or as a probation/parole officer working with the prisoners as they are released and integrated back into society. Bailey’s family has had firsthand experience with the Ronald McDonald House and she has been exposed to the mission of the organization all her life. In September 2014, she started as a temporary volunteer at the Mercy House for school with a classmate and friend; after spending time in the House she become a regular volunteer and when the opportunity arose to apply to be a staff member, she eagerly answered the call! “RMH is a place and an organization that has been near and dear to my heart for a long time so I was excited to jump at the chance to become an Assistant Manager! My favorite thing about being an Assistant Manager is the chance I get to work with and encourage families during a difficult time in their lives”, added Ghan. We appreciate your enthusiasm and look forward to working with you, Bailey!

Tooth Talk
A Smile is a Smile in Any Language Written By Dr. Sarah Cimino On the Tooth Truck, we are well aware a dentist office can be intimidating to children who have had limited experiences with dental care. We pride ourselves in bridging the gap with these kids by showing them that visiting the dentist can be fun while empowering them with the tools to get and keep their mouths healthy. One particular group of patients that often comes to us with fears and trepidations are those that are new to America and are still learning to speak English. I’m sure we can all imagine how intimidating it must be to seek health care and not understand anything the doctor and staff are telling you – let alone only being a child! This spring we had the privilege of seeing an extended family that has come full circle with their mastery of the English language and corresponding comfort with receiving dental care on the Tooth Truck. Three years ago I was able to treat a family of five who had recently immigrated to Springfield from Ukraine. While we struggled at times to communicate, they understood the power of a smile and we successfully treated 37 cavities among the siblings. Later that year we were able to address the dental concerns of three more children from Ukraine who were cousins of the first family. Sixteen more cavities were restored and another group of kids left the Tooth Truck with brighter smiles and the tools to keep them that way.
This spring we were delighted to have some of the children from the two Ukrainian families return to the Tooth Truck. They were very excited to tell us in perfect English how they had

been taking care of their teeth and we all celebrated when we confirmed they did not have any new cavities! This was just the transformation we always hope to see – a family of children with extreme dental needs and fears returning to us with big cavity-free smiles, proud to show us how they’ve kept their mouths healthy by brushing and flossing.
same experiences. Before and after each visit we were able to utilize their family members as translators to explain the procedures and answer any of their questions. With each visit, the girls became more comfortable with the staff and it was apparent they had improved their brushing and flossing at home by their increasingly brighter smiles.
This story doesn’t just stop here though. While we were celebrating the accomplishments of Marin and Marisela they informed us that they had another set of cousins who had recently immigrated and were hoping to be seen on the Tooth Truck. We eagerly brought Arina and Karyna out for their appointments and were able to calm their fears by having one of their cousins
Since 2011 we were able to treat eleven children among the three extended families that all immigrated to Springfield from Ukraine. Over 69 cavities were addressed and a staggering $19,623 in free dental treatment was provided!
Welcome,
Alise Deines! We are thrilled to introduce Alise Deines, our new Healthy Smiles Academy Manager. She is responsible for the operations of our in-school brushing program. She works closely with school staff to ensure participants have the proper skills and knowledge to establish daily brushing in the school setting. Alise is very familiar with the importance of preventative oral care and is excited to help children develop a healthy, lifelong routine. Alise attended Ozarks Technically Community College with a focus on psychology. She worked with foster youth in the state of Missouri for five years, and has a love for children and helping them achieve improved self-image and self-esteem. She is excited to continue this mission to help children through the in-school brushing program. Alise loves staying active and participating in projects that enhance the wellbeing of others. Spending quality time with her six year-old son is most important to her. She enjoys watching movies, going to the park, and doing outdoor activities with him. Welcome to the team, Alise!
