When did you start providing meals for the families at the Ronald McDonald House? We started providing meals for the Ronald McDonald House at Mercy in July 2014.

October 15 Debbie Slocum

How did you get involved with the Family Dinner Program? I became involved because of the rich history of RMH. I have been very fortunate to have great health, so I would like to help those who are going through rough times with their children and newborns!

October 17 Brent Stock

What is your favorite thing about participating with the Family Dinner Program? I love seeing the looks on the faces of family members when they see and smell the dinner. I am happy to see they can enjoy a relaxed dinner without the pressure of providing something in return. They can focus on their family.

October 20 Jessi Hummer

Do you have any favorite memories? I enjoyed spending time with my sister Alexis Rainwater, the House Manager, while I was cooking. It was fun to spend time with my husband in the kitchen while providing dinner for the families staying at the House.

October 19 Kennedy Keller Savannah Keller

From L to R: Alexis Rainwater, Ashley Schnell, Mike Schnell

What would you like to say to other groups who are considering volunteering with the Family Dinner Program? I certainly think that this is a great way to spend an evening. The families are so grateful and appreciative of the monetary and physical donation, as well as the labor involved in making dinner. There is certainly a sense of gratification that comes with giving back!

Around the Houses The Ronald McDonald Houses and Tooth Truck benefited from the 22nd Annual Day of Caring event hosted by United Way. This was a record year with more than 1,800 volunteers from 113 business and organizations completing 227 projects at nearly 70 nonprofits in the Springfield community. We would like to say a special thank you to: The volunteers with Missouri Career Center who prepared a wonderful breakfast for our families, staff and volunteers at both Houses. After breakfast, they cleaned up the kitchen and started preparing a baked potato and taco bar for lunch at the House near Cox South and put together sacked meals for families at the House at Mercy Children’s Hospital. Select Specialty Hospital who provided an awesome lunch at the Ronald McDonald House at Mercy Children’s Hospital. They served ham, chicken, twice baked potatoes, green beans, corn, rolls and 5 different desserts. YUM! Our families were so grateful and the volunteers were incredible! US Bank who adopted the wish list drive for Happy Wheels and brought boxes full of goodies to the Houses! Heidi Turner and Maria Stockton delivered items on behalf of US Bank, and were excited to learn more about all the ways they can get involved with the organization. UMB Bank delivered coffee supplies to the House as part of the United Way Day of Caring projects. With more than 800 families finding comfort in the Houses this year, donations like this are more important than ever! We were eager to help Mitzi Bibens and Carri Hauer bring in the items on behalf of UMB Bank, and look forward to welcoming their group back to serve a meal in November! Thank you to Assembly of God for their help preparing the dental supply bags for the Tooth Truck. Each child receives a bag with a toothbrush, toothpaste, a timer and floss so they can continue their dental hygiene at home! And thank you to Walgreens for collecting three boxes full of goodies for the prize bin on the Tooth Truck! Each patient gets to choose from the prize box after each appointment is completed.

Welcome, New Volunteers! The Tooth Truck’s Volunteer Program has seen tremendous growth this fall. We recently welcomed four new individuals to our amazing team of helpers.

Jessica Havener is a predental student at MSU. Jessica became interested in the Tooth Truck after listening to Dr. Sarah speak at a pre-dental society meeting last fall. She has always known she wanted to be a dentist, and is excited to gain lots of experience about the dental field through her volunteer shifts. She has volunteered previously with Give Kids a Smile and MOMOM. Samantha Bornaman is also a pre-dental student at MSU. Ever since middle school, she has wanted to be an orthodontist, and is working hard to achieve her dream. Samantha has a passion for kids and fun, which is a perfect fit for the Tooth Truck. She is also involved with Boys & Girls Club and serves as a camp counselor in the summers.

Bryson Starkey is a sophomore at MSU, completing pre-dental studies as she focuses on becoming an orthodontist. She uses her personable demeanor to relate to our patients and help boost their self-esteem. She is excited to connect with children during each volunteer shift. Bryson has been involved with the Meals-a-Million and Meals on Wheels organizations in volunteer capacities. Melinda Thurman learned of the Tooth Truck after searching for volunteer positions with the chance to work with children. She was impressed with the program’s positive impact on kids in the community and knew it would be a great fit for her. Melinda works in accounting at The Whitlock Company and looks forward to teaching our patients about the importance of dental hygiene.
